Title: Key defender depth
Post by: Stalin on December 21, 2015, 02:34:52 PM
Astbury really needs to make it, or Elton...

or Griff-man to the backline

looking a bit worrying given the leadership of the club

Would it be legal to clone Corey Enright grow him in a test tube for 22 years and then recruit him?

Grimes is coming good, but will he be great?  Batch too and Astbury is hopeful but as an academic excercise how does our back 6 compare with Hawthorns?

B: 24 Ben Stratton    17 Brian Lake    12 James Frawley
HB:    14 Grant Birchall    6 Josh Gibson    9 Shaun Burgoyne

Thats is a very very experienced and talented backline and they can move Hodge back there too.  Their games played (Birchall 200+, Frawley 150+, Burgoyne nearly 300, Gibson nearly 200, Lake 250 and Stratton 117)

Chaplin (200+) , Grimes (63) , Rance(130), Batchelor (75), Houli (137) , Vlastuin (61), Astbury (41) and a few others.  Surprisingly we do OK I think Rance and Vlastuin are really good but you can tell that they have/had 1200 games while we have 700.

If Astbury can overcome his knightmare injury run then he would be our best of the rest Key position defender behind Rance.
Going forward we really need to know what Elton can bring to the table in the one's.

Griff to the back line? Not against that move but hey I say play him as much as possible and come trade time place him on the table.

Outside of our list I'd consider Hooker if the druggies get off, or McDonald from the dees.

Grimes is coming good,

Why not just bite the bullet and play lids behind the ball.

You lose a lot forward50 but gain a lot back; lids can play tall, very strong overhead. As the 3rd or 4th tall back he'd play on some hack and dominate

Rioli, yarren, Lennon, c Ellis, Martin, Cotchin - should be able to still score

It's fustrating to lose finals when the more talented players are often where the ball is not

No, he's better playing fwd. will kick 40+ goals this year if left there

He's create 60+ goals from the back

And he'll create 100+ playing fwd.

leave Lids where he is, it's his best position

What's best for lids and best for Richmond might not be the same thing

Like hodge best position is arguably not te back pocket.  And yet hawks first gf win of the modern era came about with hodge playing as a defender

Who knows; Corey Enright might have been even more damaging further up the ground

 - Rioli, Lennon, Edwards, yarren are all genuine forward options
 - Jack will play forward with another one or two talls
 - We often play five man forward line

Lids impacting games more than he ever did as a defender is best for Richmond.

Our defence is very good and statistically has been for 3 years, our attack not so much. He adds a dimension to the fwd line that no one else can

It's like putting Martin at half back - a good idea if we had three of him.....

As much as it hurts peoples feelings; martin, deledio are both effective backs

Put it this way: how do you fit in rioli, yarren, Lennon, Edwards
 - if all the better players are forward?

Good coaches just put a tag on Deledio when he plays back. He's not Luke Hodge. Harder to tag up forward and not always the first option to tag now in midfield - and when he is it just frees up Cotchin, Martin, C.Ellis....

Martin is good down back, but he's better inside and up forward.

You don't have all those blokes in the forward line at once - they - and Cotchin & even Butler, Menadue, Markov- can all rotate mid & forward - and Yarran can (and will)play on off half back. You talk about having skill all over the park -that's how it works.

Total football.  :shh

Improving the footskills of Castagna & Broad should be a priority of the development staff this year.....

Butler, Menadue, Markov, Broad, Casta will be hard pressed getting a game.

They will be under Super Coach - but so are McBean & Lennon....

Castagna was supposedly close towards the end of last year.

Well going off his EF selections....only Newman is gone and he'll be replaced by Yarran....apart from that, I'd guess the next most likely different selection will one of Moore or Townsend as they were both brought to cover specific deficiencies identified from said EF - lack of big bodied mids & protection for Cotchin....Lennon may only come in if Hardwick decides against three talls & drops Griffiths....
