Tigers begin making coaching changes for 2017

RICHMOND has started to reshape its football department for 2017 and beyond, telling two assistant coaches they will not be part of the club's plans next season.

The Tigers were required on Monday to give their assistants an indication of whether they would be re-contracted as an off-field review assisted by accountancy firm Ernst and Young looms large.

It is understood the club is keen to retain long-term assistant Brendon Lade, but the midfield stoppages coach is not certain to stay at Punt Road Oval.

Lade, who has been an assistant at Richmond for seven seasons, took over the senior coaching duties during the NAB Challenge earlier this year.

It is believed the Tigers are also committed to retaining backline coach Ben Rutten, who was awarded the inaugural Phil Walsh scholarship by the AFL Coaches' Association in March.

All clubs are encouraged by the AFLCA to notify their assistant coaches of their contract status by August 1, giving them the green light to explore opportunities if they are not guaranteed a new deal.

Despite extending coach Damien Hardwick's deal for a further two seasons in March this year, the club left the majority of assistant coaches out-of-contract at the end of 2016.

The out-of-contract group includes development coach and 2004 Port Adelaide premiership coach Mark Williams, who joined Richmond in September 2012.

The other members of Richmond's panel are forwards coach Greg Mellor, defensive structures coach Ross Smith and offensive coach Mark P Williams.

Ryan Ferguson and Andrew McQualter are development coaches, while Craig McRae was appointed as the club's VFL coach at the end of last season.

Scratching my head at Lade being rated highly - isnt he our midfield coach? nuff said

Our fwd coach needs to be first out the door and Ross Smith our defensive co-ordinator needs to be cut loose too. What he created at hawthorn doesnt work now, game has left him and his direct report  well behind

Mark Williams not guaranteed Richmond assistant coaching job in 2017

Richmond has told 2004 premiership coach Mark Williams that it could not guarantee him a job at Tigerland next year as the club's major football department shake-up begins.

And Fairfax Media understands Damien Hardwick's long-time assistant and Port premiership teammate Brendon Lade was also informed on Monday that he could be forced to look elsewhere for a football position.

The forecast coaching moves come as the club's detailed review of its football operation, off-field business and wider culture nears completion with a full report to be revealed to the board and executive by the end of the Tigers' disastrous season.

The review, undertaken by Ernst and Young, has seen an investigation of every department at Richmond with wide-ranging interviews across the player leadership group, board, executive, commercial, membership and football staff.

Fresh from a humiliating thrashing against the Giants last weekend, club chief Brendon Gale has continued to back coach Hardwick who remains contracted for a further two seasons. But virtually every assistant coach at the club is coming out of contract come the end of October along with the majority of recruiting staff and at least 16 players.

Richmond's list management boss, Blair Hartley, is contracted until the end of 2017.

The Tigers spoke to a number of assistant coaches honouring an unofficial agreement with the AFL Coaches Association that assistants would be given a chance to seek alternative employment before the season's end. The soft deadline for that agreement is August 1.

Fairfax Media understands that neither Williams, who joined Richmond from a senior assistant role with GWS at the end of 2012 to head  its player development program, nor Lade have been dismissed and that their tenure at the club could yet continue depending on forthcoming developments.

I seriously don't understand the love for Chocco on this forum. With all his sideline ramblings (which we don't see anymore) what else has he done besides mentore Martin? Surely as development coach we'd expect to see greater development from our players?

I think Chocco & anybody else with past association with the Port Adelaide footy club should be shown the door.

Dusty was always going to be a gun player. I think Chico has mentored him somewhat but as head of player development who has really improved beside the elite players?
Most have gone backwards in development and I wouldn't call it a success just because he mentored Martin.

What I find amazing is the number of ex Port Adelaide people Hardwick has surrounded/cossetted himself with.

Blair and Hartley really need to go as well.

What an absolute crap bunch of coaches we have.
Start again, you physically couldn't do any worse.

Saying that FJ would be the first I'd grab by his scrawny neck and march him out the door.
He is the biggest problem this club has had in the last 6 or 7 years. FHO!

That's the only name outside of dimwit that I'm interested in seeing what happens to BT.

Let's see if they have the real guts to clean the place out or just make a few the scapegoat
