Tiger cubs to take on leadership role

Richmond is set to introduce a junior leadership group within its playing ranks.
And, it’s the Club’s current senior playing leadership group, comprising captain Kane Johnson, vice-captain Nathan Brown and deputy vice-captains Joel Bowden, Matthew Richardson and Darren Gaspar, which has devised the plan to stuff the next generation of leaders at Tigerland.
“Because we’ve got such an old group and such a young group of players, we felt we needed to develop a group in between that could take over from us and give them roles now to build their leadership skills. We just thought that was a really important area for the Club’s future,” Tiger skipper Johnson said.
The senior leadership group will announce the junior leaders during Richmond’s Community Camp at Ballarat next week (February 6-9).
“There will be about half a dozen players involved, but they don’t even know about this yet. It’ll all be revealed in Ballarat,” Johnson said.
“The boys that we’ve chosen are all good kids, mainly around the 23-24 year-old bracket, with one or two perhaps a bit younger.
“As part of their junior leadership role, they’ll do certain things around the Club, but they will also receive help in developing their leadership skills.
“I just think it’s going to work very well . . .”
Johnson added that the senior leadership group had been charged with other key areas of responsibility during the pre-season, and these would also be on the agenda during next week’s Ballarat Community Camp.
“We (the leadership group) didn’t have such a big role to play last year in terms of off-field planning. It was more a case of get out and play and lead the boys on the ground,” Johnson said.
“But over this pre-season, ‘Plough’ has handed over a lot of the responsibility to us.
“We’ve had to come up with where we think we need to go in the future in terms of goals, values, codes of conduct and other applicable areas.
“It’s been an interesting process, which has given us a lot more work to do outside of training, but I’ve really enjoyed it and I think it’s improved us as a group.
“Things such as holding meetings and coming up with processes together also help you with your life after football.
“It’s really in-house . . . the more control we’ve got of it, the more control we’ll have out on the ground, and that can only benefit us.”

:clapping :clapping good to see
IMHO - 3 blokes I think you'll see will be Coughlan, Newman & Rodan
-
About time.
I was thinking maybe Cogs, Newman, Krakouer, Hyde, Hartigan and Tuck could be in that group.

I would go with those guys too plus Rodan.
Smart initiative by the Club . :clapping

Coughlan, Newman, Tuck, Deledio and Hartigan should be in it. If these 5 arent in the 6 then its a joke.

Dunno who would be the best players because even though you've mentioned some good players, I just wonder if they have leadership skills. Can't knock any of those players (but have a question mark on Hartigan as to why you think he should be an automatic). The others would be the types to be great examples on field, but not sure about off field. Deledio the exception, as he shows great professionalism in everything he does.

Must be the orange hair lol.

Hartigan has exhibited some good leadership skills in his short time at Punt Rd. Leadership at Punt Rd isnt exactly in deep supply - the 5 i mentioned are clearly the best 5.
-
Hartigan was the Captain of his Under 19 TAC cup side - IIRC they won the premiership that year -so he's been a leader in his junior days

A junior leadership group of six has also been selected, and was another suggestion of Johnson's. Mark Coughlan, Chris Newman, David Rodan, Chris Hyde, Jay Schulz and 2005 debutant Brett Deledio were elected to the group by their peers.
Hoped to be a way to groom Richmond's next batch of leaders, the junior group will sit in on some of the senior leadership group's meetings.
"We want to develop five or six players that we can work with so that when we're finished, we make sure they can step straight into the role," Johnson said.
"We've got five of us, but we're all sort of 28 and 30 (years old). And in between, we've got a big gap."

Don't like Hyde and Rodan in the junior leadership group, both need to find their feet at AFL level again before taking this kind of responsibility. BTW IMO Hyde and Rodan are fringe players in my mind, and players like Tambling or Harts should be given preference ahead of Hyde and Rodan in these types of roles

Harts not only is a natural player but is also a good leader which is a nice bonus
-
As Harry has mentioned before, Rodan, Hyde and Hartigan would be our 3 main guys who have taken Wallace's gameplan and ran with it (excuse the pun). Rodan is also an extrovert in what was a quiet group with Tezza took over. So I'm not surprised Rodan and Hyde are named. Thought Harts would be also in it.
Cogs, Newman and Lids name themselves really. Sarge is also a bit of a surprise but he's been training well and he adds a tall into he junior leadership group.

It was a good surprise to see Schulz in that group. Was hoping someone unexpected would make it in there. :thumbsup
Wasn’t expecting to see Deledio in there, purely because of his age. Thought they may have given him another year to settle in, even though it seems like he’s been here forever. :thumbsup :yep

I hope rodan has a good season so we can trade him at the end of it for a 3rd rounder.

Sorry Bill, but I think you have got your facts wrong but your intent is spot on.
The TAC CUP is an Under 18 competition and always has been.
Brent Hartigan played in a Calder Cannons Premiership team in 2003 but Adam Bentick, now at Carlton, was the Captain of that Premiership team with the captaincy being shared throughout the year, as it always is at the Cannons. Hardo may well have been, and would have deserved to be, one of the captains during 2003 though.
I agree that he is a leader and is instrumental at Tigerland in showing the new guys the ropes of starting out in AFL footy.

I hope rodan has a good season so we can trade him at the end of it for a 3rd rounder.
If Richard Cole can go for a early second rounder then we should want more than a 3rd rounder for anyone in our best 22.

then again , jay did help us get a better sponsor ;D :cheers

imagine we got a 2nd rounder, as he is a leader now!!! i cant see him in our team beyond his contract , but with any luck we can trade him at yrs end, still not convinced he knows what his doing out there, reminds me of a headless chook

Change to TAC Cup Age Eligibility
By Caroline Wilson
The Age
December 8, 2005
New rules may help more former TAC Cup players get a place on an AFL list, despite missing out at a national draft.
Nineteen-Year-Old footballers will be allowed to play in the TAC Cup next season in the first age-related rule change in the under-18 competition's 14-year history.

Well it isn't an Under 18 Comp anymore.
