Taming Tiger Martin requires team effort, says Eagle Josh Hill
AFL.com.au
3 April 2017
TAMING wounded Tiger Dustin Martin is too big a task to leave to just one West Coast player in Saturday afternoon's clash at the MCG, according to forward Josh Hill.
Martin has started the season on fire, averaging 29 disposals and booting six goals in a more dangerous role stationed inside 50 for longer periods.
The powerful 25-year-old looms as the major stumbling block for West Coast to maintain its undefeated start.
However, Hill believes the Eagles have a range of defenders strong enough to stand up to the "scary" Richmond star in one-on-one battles – if Martin is cleared to play after suffering a fractured cheekbone in the round two win over Collingwood.
West Coast skipper Shannon Hurn would seem to have the physicality and smarts to match-up on Martin, while Hill nominated Sharrod Wellingham, Jeremy McGovern and Brad Sheppard as other candidates.
"I'd back any of our defenders to take him on because I'm pretty trusting in our defence that they can get the job done in the big moments," Hill said.
"I think it's just that palm-off he's got (that makes Martin so hard to defend). He can definitely make a statement with it and he can kick a goal from just about anywhere on the field, he can torp it almost 80 metres.
"He's a scary player to watch and I think we'll all be able to adjust, if he tries to palm us off (we'll) try to run him down.
"We'll try to take him down as a team."

I.e makes sure all the teachers have whiteboard markers. Although even they are becoming a thing of the past
-
Hurn could be a tough match up if they played 1on1 just based on his size but I would back Dusty purely on the fact he can throw players off balance and makr them lose footing. They will probably try and scrag him

Not quite....a little bit more engineering centred... Not that there is anything wrong with garbology per se...

All the experts have us as the underdogs again this week.
Match preview: Richmond v West Coast
Nathan Schmook
AFL.com.au
4 April 2017
SUMMARY
Richmond is 2-0 for just the second time since 1997, matching its start to the 2013 season and generating excitement that has been lacking at Punt Road Oval in recent times. The early-season surge has been based on tackling pressure and an attacking mindset when they have they ball, with the players encouraged to play on instinct. Despite periods on the back foot against Collingwood in round two, Richmond hung in and star midfielders Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin drove them home in the final quarter. Saturday's clash against West Coast presents the biggest test yet for Damien Hardwick's men and it will reveal plenty about their progress in 2017, with doubters remaining. The Eagles are also 2-0 after wins against North Melbourne and St Kilda, with this week's match-up also shaping as their toughest test so far, given the Tigers' form. The forward line has been outstanding, with Josh Kennedy coming to the rescue against the Saints to kick three late goals to snatch a 19-point win at Domain Stadium.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Saturday, April 8, 2.10pm AEST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R4, 2016, West Coast 18.17 (125) d Richmond 9.3 (57) at Domain Stadium
R12, 2015, West Coast 13.12 (90) d Richmond 10.10 (70) at the MCG
R18, 2014, Richmond 8.11 (59) d West Coast 6.6 (42) at Domain Stadium
R10, 2013, Richmond 16.7 (103) d West Coast 8.14 (62) at Domain Stadium
R5, 2012, West Coast 16.11 (107) d Richmond 14.13 (97) at Etihad Stadium
THE SIX POINTS
1. West Coast thrashed Richmond the last time the sides played, winning the inside 50s 60-27 and taking 20 marks in attack to just eight. Andrew Gaff was best on ground with 33 disposals and six inside 50s.
2. The Tigers' tackling has improved out of sight in 2017. They have averaged 72.5 across two games to rank No.2 in the AFL, having ranked last in 2016 (60.1 a game).
3. The Eagles rank No.1 so far in 2017 for scoring, kicking a total of 39 goals. Josh Kennedy, Mark LeCras, Josh Hill and Jack Darling have kicked 24 goals between them.
4. This will be a battle of contrasting game styles, based on the opening two rounds. The Eagles are ranked second for disposals per game (418) while the Tigers are ranked last (344).
5. West Coast holds the advantage 25-16 in the 42 clashes between these teams, winning four of the past six. The Eagles have also won four of the past five clashes between the teams at the MCG.
6. Star Richmond midfielder Dustin Martin finished last year ranked 30th in the Schick AFL Player Ratings, but after two impressive performances to start the season, he has moved up to a career-high No.21.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Josh Kennedy.
The reigning Coleman medallist comes up against All Australian full-back Alex Rance in a mouth-watering match-up. Kennedy leads the AFL after two games with 11 goals, but this will be his toughest match-up so far. The star Eagle averages 2.7 goals a game at Domain Stadium but that drops to 1.5 at the MCG. A big game from the sharpshooter will go a long way to securing a 3-0 start for the Eagles.
PREDICTION: West Coast by 18 points

Out of interest, this week will be only the 3rd time in the past 10 years we've played the Eagles at the 'G.
Our last win at the 'G over the Eagles was back in 2010 when a young Jack Riewoldt bagged 10 goals.
http://afltables.com/afl/teams/richmond/allgames_tm.html#18
-
Their firepower is impressive but if the RFC midfield do enough defensively so they don't get clean entries to Kennedy, Darling and LaCras we might go 3-0

Need to do a lockdown on Shuey. He's their key mid.
-
He may still play but there's talk of the Eagles resting Sam Mitchell this week given after us they have a 5-day break before playing the Swans at home.

From Barrett's Sliding Door column today:
IF the Tigers want to be taken seriously ...
THEN ... they either defeat, or lose narrowly, to the Eagles. Have done what they had to do in weeks one and two, but not sure they’ve beaten any form of quality.

Big game today. A good test against top four aspirant. Win and we put ourselves in a good position to make finals.
-
No late changes to either side for this afternoon's #AFLTigersEagles clash.
Prestia, Lennon, Short, McIntosh our starting bench.

Are we better suited in the wet ? I reckon it may rain, thunder storm just hit the great ocean road.

The system is coming in from the North West, it will miss the city for most of the day.
We might get a shower later tonight but the game should be well over.

Decent crowd here early. Reckon it might push up into the low 50,000's

Big game today. A good test against top four aspirant. Win and we put ourselves in a good position to make finals.
Season defining game. Win and we'll likely be 4-0 and full of confidence before heading into the tougher 3-week period against the Dees, Crows (away) & Dogs. Pinch one of those and with Freo to follow, we could be 6-2 after round 8. Lose today though and it'll be a reality check and although we'll likely to still be 4-4 by round 8, it'll still mean we're miles off and in reality a bottom side.
-
What a surprise! Free immediately to ducker Shuey ::).
-
We got the intercept from a bad Eagles turnover but Castagna sprayed the shot badly.
Rich 1
WCE 1
-
Seems we've got the same umps as last week ::).
-
Sloppy going forward so far. McIntosh's poor kick sideways intercepted and gifts the Eagles the first goal.
1 - 7
-
Tackles: 2 - 9
Got to lift Richmond.
-
6 inside 50s and yet we've kicked just 1 point.
Lucky Darling missed.
1 - 8
12 mins Q1
-
Kick-in by Short OOTF.
Rich 1
WCE 9
Wakey wakey Tiges!!! :banghead
-
Good stuff Cotch at HB. We break out by Jack drops Castagna's pass. Throw-in F50 pocket. Ellis snaps but it falls short. Eagles clear. Sums us up so far.
-
Almost stuffed it up overpossessing by hand again but Lambert has a ping and nails it :gotigers.
Rich 7
WCE 9
-
So you can run with the ball without bouncing now?
McIntosh keeps it in front of him and he kicks to FF. Scramble in the pocket but our snap misses.
8 - 9
-
Shuey ducks and gets another free ::).
-
So you can put a player in head-locks as well now, ump?
-
Butler too quick ....... 3 bounces and goalllllllllllllllllllllllllll :gotigers
Rich 14
WCE 9
-
Eagles have bought their own umpires to the game i see....
Absolutely disgraceful. Not happy
-
Just get it forward quickly, Tiges. Stuff the overpossessing with handball. Another bloody turnover :banghead.
Then we panic on the goal line and keep it in giving the Eagles another shot :facepalm. Lucky they are missing.
And another stupid turnover by hand (Grigg misses Jack) :banghead.
Astbury's kick from the mark is charged down :scream. Geez, we're making idiotic mistakes today :banghead.
14 - 17
-
20 secs to go. Ump pays a free against Jack for raising his leg in the marking contest :huh :huh.
Quarter time.
Richmond 2.2-14
West Coast 2.6-18
Goals: Lambert, Butler.
-
Bit of the same stuff as the first quarter of last week
-
Could they have possibly done any more to give WC a goal in that last 5 mins. Terrible kicking, handballing and decision making, can't believe we got through it unscathed.
-
Free kick count: 2 - 7 ::)
Disposals: 108 (55k,53h) - 117
Cont. poss: 38 - 39

Tackles: 15 - 18
Hitouts: 7 - 14
Dusty 10
Conca 9
Prestia 8
Rance 7
Grigg 7
Cotch 7
-
One too many handballs in the chain of possessions. Maybe two too many. And dumb decision making. Lucky not to be 3-4 goals down.
Houli missing handball targets. Not manning up. Firming as Golden Turnip of the week. But there others not far behind.
Free kicks 7-2 to the eagles, we are getting absolutely sodomised in decisions on tackles. I dont like it and i have a right to say it >:(
-
Bit of the same stuff as the first quarter of last week
Exactly. Just rubbish disposal and decision makring and a dysfunctional forward line from us plus biased umpiring but were lucky the opposition hasn't made us pay on the scoreboard.
-
Nah we don't get holding the ball. The umps changed the intepretation this week ::).
-
Jack marks in the pocket 30m out but the kick at goal is shanked :P.
We get it back but we only gain a point.
15 - 19
-
LOL umpire. Pays HTB against Butler for the exact same thing thing Masten got away with 2 min earlier ::)
-
Wow, we actually got a free kick.
Dustyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy :gotigers

-
Frees: 3 - 9
5 of the Eagles 9 for push in the back apparently (3aw).
::)
-
Houli to Grigg 45m out. Top of the square but Lennon can't mark and it's another free to the Eagles + 50 ::).
-
Thanks umps ::).
21 - 27
11 mins Q2
-
You caused that umpires. Allowing the Eagles to get away with everything. No 50m penalty is a joke for a late hit on Castagna ::).
-
We get the goal to Houli anyway :gotigers.
Rich 27
WCE 28
-
This is a disgrace.
-
These umpires :banghead
-
Needlessly, overpossessing by hand through the middle again = turnover.
Umps pays the Eagles another free in front of goal for shepherding / 3rd man in ruck against Rance ::).
27 - 36
Frees: 5 - 14 ::)
-
We actually got a free to Butler :o. Dusty bombs for a point.
28 - 36
-
This umpiring is bizaar
-
Prestia to HF to Cotch. Passes to Conca 47m out. Kick from 50. Goes right.
29 - 36
-
The umpiring is pathetic but we aren't helping ourselves with our turnovers. Dusty's mistake then.
29 - 42
-
This is so frustrating to watch. Our kicking is pathetic.
-
Can one of our forwards play in front for the quick kick forward out of the middle!
Rioli breaks away to Lambert ..well weighted kick to Castagna. Goal :gotigers
Rich 5.5-35
WCE 5.12-42
-
Had to go there, Caddy. Uncontested mark to Shuey 15m out of our goal. Where were our forwards?
-
Point to Jack from 50m.
Half-time
Richmond 2.2 5.6-36
West Coast 2.6 5.13-43
Goals: Butler, Castagna, Lambert, Houli, Martin
-
It's pretty simple, kick to our own players, just can't be that difficult. If we are going to run the ball then we have to hit the mark with every possession or we will get hit on the transition every time. Also out on the wings we are giving them way too much latitude, need to tighten up there. Think we can win this but have to increase our kicking efficiency by about 20%.
-
Where is Caddy and Prestia?
-
If the eagles start kicking straight and the umpires continue along their current path we will get blown off the park in the second half.
Kicking terrible. Overpossessing the ball. Its like a hybrid of last years style and the new style. Dare i say confidence?
Houli, Ellis, McIntosh and Vlastuin very poor decision making. Gee whiz
-
Where is Caddy and Prestia?
Caddy is ice cold. Prestia getting amongst it but has had zero impact.

Looking dark and gloomy. Heavy Rain band due before 3/4 time.
A smart team would go hard on the attack and get a 3-4 goal lead then lock it down in the 4th.

Gotta love Gerards commentary - talking about the eagles playing at their absolute worst. Get that prick off the tiger games, will never ever give credit where its due.
Onto the game -
Dusty is king now just finish the game off
Conca - best game Ive ever seen him play - has actually looked classy today :o Looks like he's finding some confidence
Astbury the big gumby has looked pretty good
Grimes has been very solid
The tanks disposal is elite
Overall our run is destroying the eagles, we've just got to make the most of our chances and stop keeping them in the game. Loving Castagna, Butler, Rioli and lennon up fwd. This is a big qtr of football in the context of our season, if we go on with it it could kickstart something
-
Credit where it's due. Conca has played well today.
Time to play KISS footy. Just get it forward anyhow even soccer it in this weather.
Vlastuin won't come back on due to concussion.

Can you believe it our slow start hoodoo is defeated for this year at least.
-
Great win. Dusty for Brownlow, The Butler for rising star. Very happy.
-
What an umpire bash this thread is
-
Awesome effort.
Very happy .
Butler 1st quarter goal was electric.
Rioli's in the third was sorcery.
Watched the game with the old man who's mad West Coast .
It's a glorious time to be a Richmond supporter in Perth.
-
Great win by the boys well worth the drenching. You can have your Richo's, Alex Rance is the best RFC player I have seen. Dusty and Cotch were great but it was a fantastic team effort with no passengers in sight.
-
Great win
The little blokes in the forward 50 are reason enough to go the footy. Sensational

And they are only going to get better.
:thumbsup
-
Very good win.
-
One of the best wins I've been to in a long time. Was t pretty at times and still some dumb players/decision making, but at no stage did they let WC run away with it, and just like last week dealt the killer blow when it was there.
-
A day well worth it at the footy .
I thought (obviously) Martin Cotchin and Rance were very good. Rioli wow.
Astbury was solid. Also Conca was very good.
First half of umpiring was very concerning.
macintosh - I've always been a fan but gee whiz I've seen the light - he is a dumb footballer. Very poor decision making. Houlis lack of manning up and missing handball targets I guess is classic Houli.
-
Loved it all, just a question re coaching, instead of high floaters into our forward line with all of WCE's height, why didn't we concentrate on low stabbing type passes to The Flea Amigos?
-
Just want to give kudos to Lambert. Went on to Treloar last week and whilst quelling his influence was involved in several scoring chains. He repeated that effort when moved on to Mitchell today. Well done Kane you're in the best 22

Yeah good call, forgot to mention lambert, did a great job on Mitchell once he went to him, maybe hes the tagger we've been looking for?

Um..we did after half-time....

Decided to go watch my local team instead of heading to the 'G (gave my ticket away for the day). Perhaps should have gone (although our 1's got a thumping win over the runners up from last year). Went to a pub after for tea and got to enjoy Melb throw their game horribly while a vocal bunch of Dee's supporters cracked the poos ;D ;D ;D ;D
Thanks to MT for all the commentary, read through it all just then. Looks like Conca is finally finding the form we all hoped for him. Rioli doing the same, just 5 years earlier ;D ;D
Dusty for Brownlow - I'm on that bandwagon. 8 votes so far??
Good stuff Tiges. Watch the media tell us we're not the real deal and WC just kicked themselves out of it. Just keep doing what we're doing.

Yep really, could clearly see we lowered our eyes and tried to stop the high floaters into the fwd line for the most part. Once the rain started falling well it was just kick it fwd at all costs and sometimes it happened

Quite a large gap in age and experience between the teams yet our younger Tiger side eventually outplayed and ran over the top of the Eagles :thumbsup.

Watched the replay and how bad is the commentary of Healy...he was hating the Tigers beating his much loved WA team...flog :gotigers
-
yeah I mentioned it earler in the thread, was stuffing putrid. Get him off tiger games, as bad as Tony Shaw was
-
Whilst he did some good things on the day I thought that Grimes struggled to keep tabs on Lecras, 3 goals 4 could've been been a lot worse.

Have to admit I still haven't watched the game yet, however if I had one criticism of Grimes it would be he isn't a great lock-down defender. He reads the play very well and generally puts himself in the right places but 1on1 he is often beaten.

Grimes was very good as per usual.

Grimes was very good as per usual.
But was soundly beaten by his opponent on the day.
