'Footy frenzy' on the cards, 2021 fixture may be delayed until February
By Michael Gleeson and Peter Ryan
The Age
20 November 19, 2020
The AFL fixture for next year is unlikely to be released until February, just weeks before play is to begin, and is further expected to only be revealed in monthly instalments as it was this year.
Club presidents and chief executives met with the AFL on Thursday for a wide-ranging briefing with the AFL telling them they were looking at a range of options, including not releasing the fixture until at least February and, when they do, only release four rounds at a time.
It is likely at that time they would also reveal which teams a club would play twice in the season, but little more detail beyond that.
The league said they remain attracted to the idea of squeezing in another 'footy frenzy', with games every day for 20 days, as happened this year as the league crammed matches into its reconfigured fixture because of the pandemic.
That proved popular with broadcasters and fans but it was also a unique situation with lockdown in Victoria leading to more people watching TV than might be the case in an ordinary year.

Can anyone explain to me how the AFL can determine that the "footy frenzy" was supposedly popular with fans when the majority could not go?
Over 980k+ members in 2020 and at an estimate 96% didn't get to a game at all this season
So how do they deem it popular?
TV ratings? People sitting in front of their TVs during lockdown due to a pandemic I don't really think equates to being "popular with fans"
2021 should see the game given back to the fans. The AFL led by SHocking have already bought in rules changes for the sake of it... now this..
-
Big no to footy frenzy for me.
Happy to have a 17 round season but I want 20min quarters back and I don't like games between Monday-Thursday.
-
I watched less games in fact I forgot a few games were on - particularly the double headers and early week games.
I think we want a gap to review and draw breath before we go again - it’s not big bash.
I quite like Thurs night footy and don’t mimd the idea of a Fri night double header, perhaps 7pm in Melb and 9pm in Perth. They did that in the 90’s and it was fun to have a couple to look forward to to kick off the weekend
-
It all depends on how this pandemic goes.
The AFL needs to keep the option of compressing rounds in case there is another lockdown.
Fully expect that by February 2021 the outlook will be more positive and the AFL will resume normal scheduling.
The only reason to then have footy frenzy is if they increase the number of rounds above 22.
-
You could only have a "footy frenzy" during school holidays and early in the season when the weather is warmer. You're not going to get crowds to turn up midweek in winter to watch bottom sides.
-
THE AFL could delay releasing its 2021 fixture until February as it navigates the challenges of a COVID-19 affected world.
But League boss Gillon McLachlan has confirmed next season will revert back to 22 rounds, instead of the 17 in 2020.

-
Waits for Cornes to sook and whinge about us playing 90% more games at the 'G than in 2020 :wallywink.
-
20 min quarters + time on are back next year.
50 seconds between a goal being scored and the centrebounce.
Floating fixture next year:
Rounds 1 to 6 including dates, times and broadcasters released by Dec 23.
Rounds 7 to 23 will be teams and opponent only. Dates, times and broadcasters will be announced during next season as we go through it.
-
Sanity prevails regarding 20 min quarters
Not at all happy about the floating fixture nonsense :banghead
For those of us who travel to interstate games it makes it bloody hard to organise anything
-
Fixture for rounds 1 to 6 to be released this Friday.
source: Tom Browne on 7news.
-
yes and going by what Tommy showed looks like round 1 will be a Carlton home game :banghead :banghead
-
Tom Browne now saying clubs are expecting the fixture for rounds 1-6 to be released on Monday.

RICHMOND
Average percentage of double-up opponents: 111.52 (second-hardest)
Pros... As if they needed it, every chance to start of the season on a flyer with games against the Blues, Hawks and Swans, all at the MCG... three Thursday or Friday night games in the first six weeks - yes, they’re gonna be a primetime fixture... Anzac Eve returns as one of 14 games at the MCG... two games against Geelong but neither of them actually in Geelong is a plus.
Cons... Double-up games against the Lions and Cats, plus the improving Saints and a GWS side that beat them in 2020... two trips to Perth and they play the tougher SA and NSW teams on their respective trips to those states.

From an onfield perspective, can't complain with the draw. No doubt Cornes and Eagles supporters will have another sook about us having 3 MCG games in a row to start the season and 5 out of the last 7 at home leading into finals. :nopity
Off-field though it doesn't do us any favours :thumbsdown.
- Just one clash each against all of the other Big-4 rival clubs (too scared to play us :thumbsdown)
- Both Anzac Eve and Dreamtime are away games
- Just two home games in the first 6 rounds (with crowd restrictions) when we are all desperate to go to the footy. It's also the time when pushing membership sales is at its greatest. Lucky we've won another flag to drive membership sales.
-
Geesook, BrisVegas, a rising Saints with GWS and Hawks the two most likely outside the 8 all x2. Plus x 2 trips to Optus and an Away game against the Power Puffs. Its about as hard a draw as they could possibly give us.
-
Do we honestly care about the draw like Dimma says anytime and anywhere we proved it this year.
-
So do I use my Jetstar voucher next year hmmmm?
Gold coast take II
-
For Cornes and all the other sooks who complain about the number of home games we get at the 'G.
We've got just 6 home games with actual home ground advantage in 2021. Compare that to the 10-11 non-Vic clubs get.

I can't post it from my phone but Champion Data reckons St Kilda has the hardest fixture and Port Adelaide has the easiest. The Pies have the 3rd hardest apparently lol. It's behind the HSun paywall so I couldn't read where they ranked ours.
-
I think we are ranked 5th hardest, I am still trying to work out how Port dodges double ups with any of the top five teams from last year.
-
The harder the draw the stronger we get.

Looks like both our Dogs & Cats games in Rounds 7 & 8 will be Friday nighters.
Tigers set to host Bulldogs in round seven Friday night blockbuster
By Peter Ryan and Daniel Cherny
The Age
April 7, 2021
The Western Bulldogs’ early-season form has them set to meet defending premiers Richmond in a Friday night blockbuster at the MCG in round seven.
The Bulldogs are unbeaten after three rounds for the first time since 2009 and are considered top-four aspirants, while the Tigers remain premiership contenders despite their loss to Sydney in round three.
Richmond’s golden era, during which they have won three of the past four flags, began the year after the Bulldogs broke a 62-year premiership drought in 2016.
Industry sources indicated the Tigers were likely to host the Bulldogs in what would be Richmond’s first Friday night match in Melbourne since the 2019 preliminary final against Geelong.
...
Richmond and Geelong will meet in a 2020 grand final rematch at the MCG in round eight, with the game appearing suited to Friday night football as the most obvious highlight of the round.
