AFL Round 3
St Kilda vs RICHMOND
Sunday, 3rd April @ Marvel Stadium
Start time: 3:20 pm
Broadcast: Live on Ch 7
https://www.afl.com.au/matches/3834
Both sides coming off rebounding wins so expect Docklands to be near full.
-
King and Higgins busy tonight but I reckon they'll have a harder time of it next week against our backline personally.
I reckon Broad to Membrey, Tarrant or Miller to King, Grimes and Gibcus floating around to intercept.
-
Ryder likely to play for the Saints.
https://www.afl.com.au/news/729693/ryder-on-track-for-tigers-clash-saints-warrior-takes-another-step-forward
At least this time we'll have two genuine rucks to match them rather than sending Samson Ryan to the wolves.
-
Damian Barrett is back on our bandwagon this week.
IF ...
the ins are Grimes, Riewoldt and Maurice Rioli ...
THEN ...
that's a trio of famous Tigers names. Got their mojo back last week against GWS, the Tigers, and still backing them in 2022 to be back where they're most comfortable – at the pointy end of the ladder.

Tigers making King plans
Damien Hardwick confident Richmond can handle the threat posed by in-form Saint Max King
By AAP
1 April 2022
RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick says the threat posed by St Kilda spearhead Max King won't sway him from using swingman Noah Balta at the opposite end of the ground in their AFL clash.
Premiership defender Balta has impressed in attack this season, kicking six goals across the opening two rounds.
He combined well with Tom Lynch against GWS last week in the absence of veteran forward Jack Riewoldt, who has been named to return from a thumb injury against the Saints at the MCG on Sunday.
"We know what we've got with Noah down back but we wanted to see what he could be and we've really enjoyed what he's brought," Hardwick said.
"He's a powerful man, a great contested mark and he's a great kick at goal as well.
"At this stage we'll settle him down up forward for this week but that's not to say that in the upcoming weeks he won't swing down back at various stages."
King's dominant third-quarter showing against Fremantle last week was crucial in St Kilda claiming their first win of the season.
The 21-year-old, now in his third full season after injuries ruined his rookie year, booted four goals in a performance that made the rest of the competition take notice.
Balta is arguably the Tigers' best physical match-up for King but Hardwick will try his other options first.
"He's an incredible talent, Max. He's getting better and better every year we see him play," Hardwick said.
"But we're really confident with Robbie (Tarrant), Josh Gibcus and Dylan Grimes ... that one of those players will be able to fill the role and negate him as best they can.
"He's going to take some marks, he's going to kick some goals - that's what the very best players do.
"We've got to make sure we manage that as best we can and keep it to a relatively low total."
Riewoldt and Grimes, who missed last week because of soreness, both took part in the Tigers' light training session at Punt Road on Friday.

THE CERTAINTIES FOR ST KILDA V RICHMOND
Andrew Slevison
SEN
1 April 2022
Crouch to have 25 or more disposals
You can almost set your watch to a midfielder with contested ability getting 25 or more touches against the Tigers.
Brad Crouch found the ball 29 times in last weekend’s win over Fremantle after 27 in Round 1 and is expected to continue on his merry way.
He has averaged 29 disposals in his last six against Richmond, including when he was at Adelaide, so 25 seems extremely accessible.
Edwards to pick up 15+ touches
Shane Edwards has been busy against St Kilda in recent years.
In his last 10 outings he has averaged 19.5 touches, dropping under 15 just once in that time.
Although he’s started the season with tallies of 14 and 17, you can expect he will have more of an impact against the Saints in his forward-midfield role.
Edwards has also kicked at least a goal in five of his last six against the Saints so you can throw in a major for good measure.

AFL's Tigers wary of Saints' talls trio
Anna Harrington
Victor Harbour Times
2 April 2022
Richmond will take on the daunting task of facing St Kilda's three dynamic talls, Paddy Ryder, Rowan Marshall and Jack Hayes, with a view to exploiting them.
The Saints opted to keep both Marshall and Hayes in their 22 alongside the returning Ryder for Sunday's AFL clash at Marvel Stadium.
Former SANFL star Hayes, 25, has proved a revelation since signing in the supplemental selection period, with Richmond coach Damien Hardwick wary of all three St Kilda talls but hinting at a counter.
"Everything's exploitable, it depends on the way the game pans out," Hardwick said.
"St Kilda play a certain style of game but Paddy Ryder's such an important player to the way they play. I think they play their best footy when he's in the side, and they've certainly found one in Hayes also.
"... What I do know is all those players are very, very capable.
"Marshall's one of the best young ruckmen going around and Ryder, although experienced, has certainly got a spring in his step as well when he's playing his best footy.
"How they line up I'm not too sure but I certainly know we'll have our hands full at various stages."

As with all games now thanks to the new rules it's whoever wins the contested footy and clearances in the midfield wins. Focus on Nank & Soldo vs Marshall & Ryder in the ruck. We need to bring the same intensity with and without the footy as last week.
Need to watch Butler and Higgins too only because they pump themselves up when they play us. So important we apply pressure upfield so both of them and Max King don't get fed easy deliveries.
-
Straight from the first bounce and a goal to Baker :gotigers
Rich 1.0-6
StK 0.0-0
-
Out of the centre again. Bolton long bomb and Balta shepherds it to bounce through :gotigers
Rich 2.0-12
StK 0.0-0
-
Bad defensive turnover. Grimes towards Balta who was flatfooted and we gift them a goal :banghead
12 - 6
-
Ballwatching again in defence :banghead.
12 - 12
-
Lynch's kick inside 50 wasn't to where it should've gone but the Saint defender punches it straight to Parker who crumbs a goal :gotigers.
Rich 3.0-18
StK 2.1-13
-
Bit easy for the saints through the middle at this stage
-
No defence so far. We are gifting them easy goals on transition/turnover.
18 - 20
-
Why did Rioli pull out of the contest? Terrible :banghead
-
Fricking turnovers passing short to contests :banghead.
They are just flooding back and hitting us with the sucker punch on the rebound into an open forward line :banghead.
18 - 26
-
Won't win playing this way.
-
Good transition along the wing. Lynch used the body and then recovered to gather and goal :gotigers.
Rich 4.0-24
StK 4.2-26
-
Out of the middle and it gets to Pickett but he misses on the run.
25 - 26
-
All round they have been soft on the 50s and then pull us up for a technical one ::).
And from that they end up with a goal.
25 - 32
Stupid Stand rule >:(
-
All round they have been soft on the 50s and then pull us up for one ::).
And from they end up with a goal.
25 - 32
Definitely 50 were just idiots. Only team still giving them away.
-
Out of the middle. Lynch spoiled. George's crumbs but snap doesn't make the distance and it's rushed.
26 - 32
-
Lynch misses the set shot.
27 - 32
Definitely 50 were just idiots. Only team still giving them away.
Watch the other games this round. The umps have been soft on the 50s.
-
Fumble fumble fumble :P.
But Rioli does well to tap it on and his kick is marked by Parker in the goalsquare who cops one high to go on with. Goal :gotigers
Sorry internet went down :scream.
Balta gets another :gotigers
Rich 6.3-39
StK 5.2-32
-
Higgins out with concussion.
Good mark by Parker. Misses.
40 - 32
-
Late goals and ex tigers kicking them. Hate that.
-
Missed some gettable ones.
Thought parker should have kicked a 3rd.
How castagna doesn't make that distance on the snap is beyond me.
-
Best quarter by Ross yet. Let's see if he can keep it up.
-
Quarter time
Richmond 6.4-40
St Kilda 6.2-38
Goals: Parker 2, Baker, Balta, Bolton, Lynch.
Pure shootout.
My internet working as well as our defensive side of the game :banghead.
-
I’ve noticed Castagna doesn’t get much lift when he snaps the ball it’s either easily marked or punched through on the goal line.
-
Stats:
Short 9
Ross 8
Cotch 7
Broad 6
Dow 6
Rioli 6
We've had 7 more inside 50s: 19 - 12 ...... means the Saints have scored 8 times from just twelve entries.
-
Grimes rusty. That two errors from the co-captain.
40 - 44
-
Steele drops the ball in the tackle = no free. But they get one off the ball.
-
Frees: 3 - 10 ::)
-
Umps are killing us again.
Paying every single one to Saints
-
OMG we actually got a HTB free :o.
Balta good mark 15 out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 7.4-46
St K 7.3-45
-
Balta >>>>> Jack
Hate to say it, sorry Jack.
-
Last 4 entries have just been aimless bombs. Rushed point.
47 - 45
-
That's better. Parker goal :gotigers
Rich 8.5-53
StK 7.3-45
-
Man Parker is having some game against his old mates!
-
3 Tigers forward of the pack and no one front and centre which allows the Saints to clear. Schoolboy stuff :banghead
-
Better play. Sheds to Bolton 35 out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 9.5-59
StK 7.3-45
-
Grimes having a stinker
-
That was too easy for 'em, Tiges :scream.

Even George is kicking 'em straight lol :o
Rich 10.5-65
StK 8.3-51
-
Now that was dumb by Bolton. Ump blew the whistle 3-4 times.
-
I don't care who you are. To give away 50 like that is a disgrace. Was clearly a saints free kick.
A symptom of our lack of discipline
-
Half-time
Richmond 6.4 10.5-65
St Kilda 6.2 8.4-52
Goals: Parker 3, Balta 2, Bolton 2, Baker, Lynch, Castagna.

We've been the better side but with 12 more inside 50s we should be further ahead. Just haven't made the most of our entries by bombing it too much. Saints are flooding and hoping to hit us on the counter. Our best goal that quarter was when Soldo drew Howard to the pocket and Baker kicked it back into the corridor to Sheds which opened our forward line for Bolton to mark and goal. If we're going to bomb it to Lynch and Balta then we need our smalls front and square to keep the ball from rebounding out. At times we've had our smalls waiting out the back for the cheapy and they end up in no man's land when the ball is spoiled back the other way by Saint defenders who clear.
-
Broad has been very good and I’ve liked Dows work in the contest. He’s been very strong in traffic and he’s pressure has been excellent.
Parker has worked very hard again and seems to be enjoying playing against his old team and he’s being rewarded for his hard work. I’ve liked Castagnas pressure up forward too.
Nankervis has been great.
-
Great by Nank the tank.
Lynch spray the snap :P
66 - 52
-
Good forward pressure from the ball-up. Nank goal :gotigers
Rich 11.6-72
StK 8.4-52
-
What was Lynch doing then? Go for the goal not a small against two defenders :P
-
Good pressure again forced the error. Hugo on the run = goal :gotigers
Rich 12.6-78
StK 8.5-53
-
Grimes hammy :(
Aarts on as the sub.
-
How many throws and illegal disposals did St Kilda have then ::)
78 - 59
-
Umps wanting the Saints to win ::).
-
Broad is having a shocker the last few minutes. First options you muppet!
-
Giving them some easy goals from clangers on the wings.
If you can't find a target just kick it 40m ffs
-
Poor blind handball by Cotch. Needed to keep it tight.
78 - 67
We need to lift our workrate again.
-
Cotch is so cooked he just handballs blindly all the the time.
All the warning signs are there that they will run over the top of us here.
-
Wow butler take a dive
-
There is plenty of dumb footy out there by us.
78 - 73
Not working as a team. Not working hard enough full stop!
-
I'm so sick of these undisciplined acts.
Drag Marlion, leave him off. don't care if we lose.
-
As soon as I saw Aarts was coming on I knew something bad was on the horizon
-
If that’s not staging I dont know what is… but can we be any dumber in the last 10!
-
I'm so sick of these undisciplined acts.
Drag Marlion, leave him off. don't care if we lose.
he's been our best player
-
I'm so sick of these undisciplined acts.

Coach needs to send a message
-
3/4 time
Richmond 6.4 10.5 12.6-78
St Kilda 6.2 8.4 11.8-74
Goals: Parker 3, Balta 2, Bolton 2, Baker, Lynch, Castagna, Nankervis, Ralphsmith.
Dimma needs to give us a rev up at 3/4 time. That last 10 mins was pure lack of desperation, workrate and teamwork compared to the Saints.
-
When we lose momentum we really lose it bad. 50’s and free kicks are shocking
-
When we lose momentum we really lose it bad. 50’s and free kicks are shocking
The umpiring in this game has been terrible. All the throws & HTBs not paid against St Kilda that quarter and Kmac mark/front on contact not paid.
-
Grimes for Aarts....
Like substituting vinegar for milk in your coffee.
-
Grimes for Aarts....
Like substituting vinegar for milk in your coffee.
Why, just why is he playing.
-
Another Saint 'scoop' missed by the umps at the centre clearance.
78 - 80
-
Grimes for Aarts....
Like substituting vinegar for milk in your coffee.
Sonsie should be the sub.
-
Were done.
-
That was terrible and too easy for them along the wing. We're out of gas. We are 20m off our opponents :help.
78 - 86
-
Mason Wood playing like bloody Bob Skilton today.
-
Here come the umps
-
Another 'free' ::)
78 - 92
-
23-16 free kick count.
Screw you AFL and the umps. Cheats.
-
Our midfield is just no where near good enough. The fact Aarts is in the centre bounce is disgraceful
-
To many players coasting out there few senior players gone missing cannot run out games.
-
Kmac long and Aarts marks in the pocket. Sprays it :facepalm.
-
And Aarts cant make the distance from 40
We look so slow, were not fit enough
-
Aarts ... FFS :banghead
-
And Aarts cant make the distance from 40
We look so slow, were not fit enough
Rob Inness has been a major loss since the end of 2022.
-
Prime example, not one player front and centre of that shot from Aarts. Even from a defensive standpoint.
-
Not watching 4th quarter. Eating dinner.
Sounds like a good thing.
-
Great coaching move gibcus on king
-
And Aarts cant make the distance from 40
We look so slow, were not fit enough
Rob Inness has been a major loss since the end of 2022.
Grimes clearly not right and out now for a month
Our season is in big trouble.
-
Last 7 goals to St Kilda after we lead by 25 points. This is as bad as the Carlton loss :thumbsdown.
Game over if it wasn't already.
78 - 99
-
Honestly though. Aarts playing midfield. SERIOUSLY ?!
-
And Aarts cant make the distance from 40
We look so slow, were not fit enough
Rob Inness has been a major loss since the end of 2022.
Grimes clearly not right and out now for a month
Our season is in big trouble.
Questions need to be asked about our conditioning or lack of it.
-
Yep of course when the Saints player drags it in it's a ball-up ::).
-
Ross got a handball off didn't he?
We are stuffed
-
Coughing up a 4 goal lead to St Kilda of all teams... what a effing disgrace. The flakiest team in the comp, and they're pantsing us.
-
A lot of people were singing the praises after last weeks win but I thought we were pretty ordinary. Similar this arvo but saints just played spot better than gws. Are midfield is the glaring issue. Need to recruit well over this offseason
-
Kicking them from the grandstand that bloke. Tarrant needs to sort out that Astbury holding tribute act
-
So disappointed. Couple of observations from the loss.
Cotchy cooked but we knew that
Edwards lost a yard fumbles constantly
We lack discipline which is kinda pathetic
Were not fit enough
I don't mind if we don't make the finals which we won't but let's play the youngsters with skills and get rid of the role players like aarts, Ross, Castagna etc
-
Coughing up a 4 goal lead to St Kilda of all teams... what a effing disgrace. The flakiest team in the comp, and they're pantsing us.
This
-
Good way to destroy the confidence of Gibcus.
Well played Dimma
-
St Kilda player takes possession, gets run down and drops the ball = no free ::)
-
We would have the least open forward line in the history of football. Same poo every week, hoof it up to the big fella in the pocket
-
Same as the seconds, unfit and not fighting it out
-
Time to retire now Cotchin you clearly don't have the workrate anymore. Cooked...
-
Coughing up the last 10 goals after leading by 25 pts in the second half. This reminds of the stench of 1987 :help.
-
Yes- fitness seems to be an issue.
-
Time to spill some players. Cotch is not a first grader any more, Castagna, Aarts never were. Edwards looks cooked and Ross and Graham are too slow for the midfield.

he's not at the top of the list of worries. He's one man. Plenty out there who are just not up to it, at least Chimp still adds value at times

Definitely his last year but move him out of the middle. Half back to finish the year
-
Dimma needs to make hard calls simply on players senior ones to. His to loyal to George ,Aarts types to for what. Fitness is a big issue hasn't been right last 2 seasons.
-
Last few seconds watching George fall all over the place sums up where were at
-
He’s a headless chook.
-
Open up the changes for next week thread. I have a few suggestions.
-

It's now open :help.

The only positive I can come up with is that we've done this in rounds 1 and 3 rather than losing a Grand Final in this way like the Bulldogs did last year.
There's a whole carcass of crap we served up for us to pick over, but in saying that, my two key takeaways from the game are still:
1) The umpiring was atrocious and is far too prominent in outcomes these days. The final free kick differential was BoG for St Kilda with easily the most meters gained
2) Footy in 2022 absolutely sucks. Stinks. Appalling. Almost ... almost unwatchable. Talk about taking a great game--a unique global game--and slowly turning it into every other sport on the planet. No pressure anymore. It's just garbage viewing. Makes me want to vom, but I'd rather string up all the unaccountable crooks at AFL house and vom on them instead.

Agree with your last point. Don't bother with any other games now, barely want to watch the tiger's
-
Dimma needs to make the hard calls on a few senior players they a struggling and cannot run out games the past is past we need to rejuvenate and blend the kids in.To loyal to his troops George ,Ross ,Aarts how isn't RCD getting a game.
Fitness major concern last 2 seasons big drop off running out games and injuries what's the issue there ?. Teams get a run on we cannot even try to stem the flow.
Umpiring is not the issue for 10 straight goals.Cut this crap moving players out of position doesn't work with all Baker was one of the best back pockets in our successful era yet now we decided no play him up forward.
-
You must also question list management allowing Butler & Higgins to go when you keep Aarts & Castagna. Yes George has 3 flag's but the other 2 are clearly better footballers

They’re both poo!
-
It look like it will turn into a rebuild year, I think we will bottom 4 this year unless we find a few unfortunately .
To the old blokes to keep winning games for us is not going to happen. With injuries and we start to get them to senior players, the kids will get a crack to see if they have anything
Was a good era , but you can’t beat the AFL , umpires, rule changes and the opposition forever
-
I must admit that Nanks stand up bump (brick wall) was one of my favorites moments in the last two season's.
-
Play 1 ruck at this ground. It's a very fast track...
-
Said it after round 1, it isn't the loss so much as how we lost
That was a pathetic, pitiful effort in the last qtr and a half.
The wheels fell off when Grimes went off. Granted Dylan was having an average game but when he went off the backline fell to pieces.
Throw in the dropping of heads after the Saints got their 2nd in the final qtr and game was over
Agree others our fitness is a massive concern as are the soft tissue injuries
-

I chuckle at these articles.
They played King and Hayes as genuine key forwards they played Marshall and Ryder as ruckmen its exactly what we are currently doing they play Membrey as well who is just 188cm and a mobile medium. Imo their ruckmen Ryder and in Particular Marshall are better fwds than Nank and Soldo.
When Riewoldt comes back we will be similar to their set up. Two big tall fwds, a tall fwd and two big ruckmen. Lynch Balta our equivalent of King Hayes and JR our Membrey.
Keep saying it this what most teams are now doing.
-
Miller shouldn't have been dropped get games into him.
-
Mason Wood playing like bloody Bob Skilton today.
Not a lot to beat hes played against McIntosh.
-
And Aarts cant make the distance from 40
We look so slow, were not fit enough
Rob Inness has been a major loss since the end of 2022.
Grimes clearly not right and out now for a month
Our season is in big trouble.
Questions need to be asked about our conditioning or lack of it.
Didnt we just have our longest and best preseason since 2017? don't think fitness is the problem.

Time to retire now Cotchin you clearly don't have the workrate anymore. Cooked...
he's not at the top of the list of worries. He's one man. Plenty out there who are just not up to it, at least Chimp still adds value at times
Definitely his last year but move him out of the middle. Half back to finish the year
No no noooooo, we have kids screaming out for a gig and they are h/b's defenders mostly. Stack Brown ring any bells.
we were never going to win a flag this year we need the club to acknowledge this and start prioritising kids over oldies.

Miller shouldn't have been dropped get games into him.
Ah a man after me own heart. 198CM 98KG quick KPD now i wonder which one of StKildas talls he could matched up on. Not as if they played midgets in this game.

Miller isnt treated fairly at our club. Hes a young man with lots of athletic ability who in 2 games had probably made 2 mistakes in contests only. He has to play so he can learn the caper.

It means someone tall has to come out of the back half, for me the logical one would be Broad to a wing allowing both Gibcus and Miller to get a game. The other one we should be looking at is Mansell and that also means a small/med has to be dropped or moved.

Needed to slow it down when Saints started coming back but we kept going at a million miles an hour...dumb football... :banghead

Disappointing to see our rucks only take one mark each.
How is this possible that our big men can’t take grabs all over the ground especially forward?
As I’ve said previously also disappointing with Balta and Lynch too although Lynch did have 4 marks but I reckon he dropped about an extra 6 he should have taken.

10. RICHMOND (1-2, 92.4%)
Last week’s ranking: 8
We weren’t floored by Sunday’s loss - we tipped St Kilda once we knew Paddy Ryder was back - but is helping cement our view that we expected too much from Richmond coming into this year. Dion Prestia’s return and some other personnel tweaks may help rebuild their midfield, but it’s hard to see the Tigers overcoming all of their problems enough to challenge for the top four right now. Finals contender? Absolutely - they’ve got the veteran nous and enough talent to finish above 2-1 sides like the Hawks, Saints and Dockers. But finishing much higher than, say, sixth (unless something changes) seems unlikely.
