Title: AFLW 1st Semi Final: Richmond vs North Melbourne @ Punt Rd, Sat. Nov. 12
Post by: one-eyed on November 05, 2022, 08:51:17 PM
North defeated Geelong 16-14 or rather Geelong threw that final away.

Anyway, we play North next week.

I'm guessing it will be a Friday night.

It's our home final but don't be surprised we get sent to Princes Park to play it rather than Punt Rd.

Ch 7 just said it will be at Punt Rd.

A mate of mine reckons it will be at Prince's Park which makes sense. And he is usually on the money

Can only fit about 2,000 in at Punt Road and it's not a great venue for fans. Shocking amenities

The Tiger Army will be out enmasse...so we need it to played where you can accommodate up to 10,000. Not that I'm saying they'll get 10k

Got a good source that Richmond’s “home” final will be at Princes Park. I endorse this. Punt Road is way too small and if more than 2000 people want to come, it won’t accommodate it. Finals need to be played at the bigger venues.

Offsiders report Punt Road which I think is a letdown given the occasion. If that’s the case @Richmond_FC doing a disservice for people who want to see a finals game by playing there. Needs to be at a ground where more than 2000 people can attend.

Staggering decision playing it at Punt Road. So many won't be able to go. Club better make sure AFLW members get tickets.

Secondly, the time. The Matilda's are playing across the road at the same time.

The AFL are so stupid it's just not funny

They need to play their way

Once the Tigers give up too much uncontested possession in a game, they find it hard to apply their brand of tough, relentless pressure footy. Against the Lions on Saturday afternoon, once the home side established some control in the game Richmond got caught out playing skinny, straight line footy. Trapped out on the wing with all their numbers in direct line with the ball, they were exploited by Brisbane's willingness to use the width of the ground. As soon as Richmond rediscovered that in its own game in the final quarter, it once again looked dangerous. The Tigers will take encouragement out of that last quarter now but must play Tigers footy against North Melbourne next week if they are to remain in the hunt.

We don't play Princess Park very well.  It's too big for our game plan.  Absolutely the right decision to have it at Punt Rd.  A win is more important than a few extra fans at the game.

"A few extra fans"

Not sure a few thousand people missing out is the same as a few extra....

We played OK at Princes Park last time. Played it very well and we won. PRO is the same dimensions as Marvel, Princes Park is similar. Our game plan doesn't work when we allow the opposition to transition from D50 with no pressure or we are non competitive around stoppages as was proven last weekend... that has nothing to with the ground IMHO

I would also argue that the bigger the crowd the bigger the advantage to us. And let's not forget if we win; we are likely going to be playing at Princes Park the following week

Agree with knighter, whatever gives the girls the best chance to win. And if we do manage to win then I assume the prelim final will be at ikon park or marvel stadium so whichever wants to go will have no trouble getting a ticket.

Just think those who handed over the hard earned $$ for an AFLW membership would like to be able to go an watch.

there is a good chance that won't happen

It's funny; in the AFL at finals time we whack Geelong supporters for complaining about not having home finals at Kardinia Park because it would mean '000s would miss out. But in this case it's OK for fans to miss out because we deserve the advantage of having a home final at our home ground

And BTW I've managed to get a ticket

I don’t whack Geelong supporters for complaining about not playing at kardinia. In fact I think it is their right to play every home game there. What I do whack them for is clinging to the fact they don’t play there as the only reason they’re not winning. Especially in our dynasty years complaining the afl favoured us like them playing finals at the G hasn’t been the way it’s been for atleast 20 years. I can really only remember them playing 1 final at their beloved stadium once and they lost that one to freo.

Pathetic’ Tigers slammed for locking fans out of final

Richmond’s AFLW semi-final sold out in minutes, leaving fans out in the cold and rival players questioning the Tigers’ decision to host the game at 2800-capacity Punt Rd Oval.

Richmond’s AFLW semi-final sold out in minutes but CEO Brendon Gale has defended the decision to host the game at 2800-capacity Punt Rd Oval.

‘Doesn’t make sense’: AFL under fire for finals decision as Tigers defend ‘double standard’ claim

Catherine Healey
Fox Sports
November 7th, 2022 6:24 pm

The AFL has come under fire for its “missed opportunity” by scheduling an AFLW final to clash with a Matildas match, forcing fans to choose between the two sports.

The match between the Matildas and world number two ranked Sweden was announced back in August for this Saturday afternoon at AAMI Park.

But the AFL has opted to host both AFLW finals this Saturday as well – with Richmond hosting North Melbourne at the smaller Punt Road from 1.40pm, despite Friday night and Sunday being options for the code.

There’s also a WBBL clash to be held at Junction Oval on Saturday from 1.40pm.

The second final will be held in Adelaide from 4.10pm – and will clash with the annual Christmas Pageant.

AFLW expert and Fox Footy commentator Chyloe Kurdas was left unimpressed by the scheduling conflicts.

“A limited number of people could physically go and have the (AFL)W experience with a smaller venue, then a clash with a marquee international sporting event. So, it doesn’t make sense … it’s a bit of an own goal,” Kurdas told The Age.

“It doesn’t make sense to split your women’s sports fan base.

“If you’re going to host a game at Punt Road, either host it early or host it late and then allow fans to go to both. What they’re essentially asking fans to do is choose.”

Tickets for Richmond’s AFLW final sold out within minutes on Monday, but the venue holds just 2800 people.

Tigers chief Brendon Gale has defended the club’s decision to host its semi-final at Punt Road, despite crowds of more than 4000 predicted.

“Ultimately we decided our AFLW team had earned the right to play a home final,” Gale said.

“Our players and coaching staff have worked incredibly hard for this opportunity and are very excited to be playing at the Swinburne Centre.

“While we understand some fans will be disappointed given the capacity of the venue, we owe it to our players to give them the best chance of winning.”

In the past Gale had called on men’s Tigers games against Geelong to be played at a larger stadium in Melbourne.

Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney weighed in on the AFLW fixturing, and believes the summer slot is where the sport is best suited.

“It’s a busy week at the moment, it’s Melbourne Cup week, there’s four race meetings on, there’s plenty of other sports happening, the T20 World Cup, there’s probably too much happening at this time of year for the players and the AFLW to get the clear air,” he said on SEN.

“In the summer there’s a lot more news being generated because there’s not a lot to talk about sport wise.

“(AFLW) gets its own clear run. People are more intrigued.

“It makes way more sense from my point of view to have it when they can get their own clear air. It’s sort of been lost with the horse racing and what else has been on this week.

“The conditions are obviously tough to play in (over summer), but the men are training in the exact same conditions as well.”

Tigers' Punt Rd preference means sold-out semi unlikely to be moved

Sarah Black
womens.afl
7 November 2022

RICHMOND'S "very strong preference" to play its home semi-final against North Melbourne at the Swinburne Centre means there is little to no chance of it being moved, despite the game selling out.

Tickets were exhausted within 13 minutes of going on general sale on Monday, with the venue able to accommodate around 2,500 fans.

The teams played two weeks ago, attracting a crowd of 3,100 at Arden Street.

Tigers CEO Brendon Gale told News Corp that his side had earned a home final.

"We had some discussions with the AFL regarding the venue for this weekend's game, but ultimately we decided our AFLW team had earned the right to play a home final," Gale said.

"Our players and coaching staff have worked incredibly hard for this opportunity and are very excited to be playing at the Swinburne Centre.

"While we understand some fans will be disappointed given the capacity of the venue, we owe it to our players to give them the best chance of winning.

"This discussion underlines the significance of our planned redevelopment at Punt Road Oval which will grow our capacity to almost 8000 – a project we are fully committed to delivering."

There has been significant backlash on social media from fans who have been unable to get tickets, as well as those concerned about the timing clash with the Matildas' match against Sweden at the nearby AAMI Park.

The AFLW supporter base has a substantial overlap with women's sporting fans in general.

Richmond has previously opted to move to alternate venues for AFLW matches due to Punt Road Oval's limited capacity, with the Tigers moving two home games in 2020 to accommodate a larger crowd.

The AFL provided womens.afl with the following statement:

"Richmond earned the right to host the semi-final and indicated a very strong preference to play on their home deck at Punt Road – which we know will have a great atmosphere come 1:40pm Saturday.

"When scheduling finals matches, the AFL takes into consideration a number of factors including the home team venue preference, days breaks for clubs (both the week before and the following week), timings for fans, clubs and broadcast, and forecasted crowd / venue capacity.

"Our role is to give our AFLW matches the best possible chance to be a successful event and after an amazing week one, we have two great semi-finals lined up on Saturday afternoon across Victoria and SA, live on Channel 7, and on based on day one ticket sales, really strong attendance interest in both games."

Both the Richmond-North Melbourne match and the Adelaide-Collingwood game at Unley Oval must be played during the day due to a lack of broadcast-quality lights for night matches.

The WBBL Melbourne Derby – also broadcast on the Seven Network – is being played on Sunday, while the need to avoid five or six-day breaks is also considered.

We finished top 4 & are entitled to a home final & the choice of venue.  How many teams would choose to play their game at an away venue?  We are not Geelong in the AFL, we are Richmond in the AFLW & we play at PRO!
Now I don't actually know who made this decision (the board, the AFLW, coach or president) but I would hope that our players had a say in this, if so then they chose to play at home & why not?  Who wouldn't?
There's a premiership on the line here & winning it is what matters the most, not the comfort of a few supporters.  Choosing our battlefield is the most significant advantage we could get & its a right that we earned, why not give ourselves the greatest possible chance of winning?     :gotigers

Umm Melbourne finshed 2nd. Entitled to a home final, so they could have played down at Casey Fields where they  have an advantage but they were not afforded that so called "right". Different rules for different fools; clearly

Casey fields has a capacity of almost 10k. I very much doubt their qualifying final being played at ikon park had anything to do with needing more capacity given there were only 2.5k people in attendance.

My point was Melb earned the right for a home final at Casey but they were directed by the AFL /AFLW  that their final had to be played at Ikon. But for reasons only the AFL can explain a different set of rules for them, different rules for us

You’re saying that like it’s a bad thing. If Melbourne wanted the game at Casey fields as much as we wanted ours at PRO maybe they would have gotten it. Also another thing to consider is they were playing the crows so playing at ikon was still a significant home advantage whereas it wouldn’t be for us.

SEN Chief Reporter Sam Edmund has queried the AFL’s scheduling decision.

“(Gale is) just going into bat for his players and his team, he wants to give them the best possible chance of winning,” Edmund told SEN Breakfast.

“He’s never had to really firm a strong philosophy in the men’s game because the decision is made before it even becomes a debate, as far as Richmond is concerned.

“They’re never going to play Richmond and Geelong down at GMHBA Stadium because 50,000 people will miss out as opposed to maybe a few thousand in this one.

“But it’s just the decision when they’re trying to grow the game, they’re trying to maximise attendance, AFLW is fighting for relevance in a crowded sporting market, you’d think they’d move it to get the most amount of people in.

“It would just be common sense for mine, maybe I’m misreading it, (but) it does seem to fly in the face of everything they’ve done on this front.”

Yes I am. I have friends who pay the extra for an AFLW membership and they don't have a ticket for this week's game. That's just not right IMHO

Back to the draw board: Lessons from last time the Tigers and Roos met

Sarah Black
womens.afl
8 November 2022

JUST two weeks ago, North Melbourne and Richmond played out a nail-biting draw to close their home-and-away seasons.

The tie meant the Kangaroos finished eighth, and had to beat Geelong on its home deck in order to progress in finals, while Richmond earned a second chance, and the dubious honour of facing the rampaging Brisbane in Queensland.

This Saturday, the two teams will meet again in a semi-final, with the winner to progress to a preliminary final against Melbourne.

What did we learn from the draw?

Jasmine Garner can be tagged

The unheralded Meg Macdonald shut down the powerful star Roo, holding a visibly frustrated Garner to just five disposals in the first half, shadowing her from stoppage to stoppage. It's tough to shut her out for all four quarters, though, and Garner finished the game with 13 touches – her lowest tally since she moved from the forward line to midfield.

North Melbourne can win – or lose – a game solely off its own boot

Call this more of a reinforced message rather than a brand-new fact – the Kangaroos live and die by their accuracy in front of goal. Rarely a side that struggles to get the ball inside 50, the Roos booted 3.9 (and at least one out on the full) in their draw with Richmond, dominating the third term but only receiving a return of 1.5 for their troubles.

Richmond has the guts to match it with the big guns

The Tigers have played three of the remaining five other finalists, defeating Brisbane, running oh-so-close to Adelaide early in the season and drawing with North Melbourne. With a top-four spot up for grabs, most expected the much more seasoned Roos to outplay the Tigers, but the visitors' pressure around the contest and ability to take advantage of their opportunities in front of goal held them in good stead.

Emma Kearney is still arguably North's MVP

Skipper Kearney sat out the game with knee soreness, and her run off half-back was sorely missed. Few can match Kearney's innate sense of when to stand up in big moments, and such is her creativity and drive, opposition teams often send a forward to play a negating role on the 33-year-old.

When it all clicks for Ellie McKenzie, she could win a league best and fairest

Admittedly, "former No.1 pick is a good player" isn't a big call, but McKenzie scored the 10 votes from the coaches for her 16-disposal, two-goal performance against North Melbourne two weeks ago. The power and run she can generate from the contest is game-changing. McKenzie had a tough first half to the year with calf issues, and with an injury-free pre-season ahead of her, should improve on her consistency in 2023.

Kim Rennie is the lynchpin North tall

North Melbourne threw the kitchen sink at the Western Bulldogs to prise ruck Kim Rennie out of there, eventually signing her through the draft after the stand-off could not be resolved. One season and the signing of dynamic Irish forward Vikki Wall later, and the Roos' tall line-up is complete. But Rennie's late withdrawal from the Richmond match due to H&S protocols threw out the Roos' structure, with Emma King forced to ruck majority of the game with support from Wall.

Have Richmond and the AFLW "kneecapped" the game by locking so many supporters out of finals?

@LaurenHeraldSun

Fans have conceded they will not attend AFLW games again after missing out on Richmond’s final against North Melbourne — it’s a situation which could and should have been avoided.

Yellow and black: How a CD led to star defender's Tigers decision

Sarah Black

EILISH Sheerin's debut season has been simply remarkable.

Plucked from AFL Sydney side Inner West Magpies (and Newtown Breakaways prior to that), the 30-year-old Sheerin has been named in the All-Australian squad and has been a key part of Richmond's surge up the ladder.

But with draft interest from both Richmond and Greater Western Sydney on the table, the Tigers have one anonymous supporter to thank for Sheerin opting to nominate for the Victorian draft pool.

Sheerin had spent a season with the Giants as a train-on player before rupturing her ACL, and then returned to the club for an invitational series against Sydney earlier this year.

"Trent Moseby, he's our list manager, and he's very diligent, so I imagine he looked through a lot of very average-quality AFL Sydney footage and saw me at some stage. He reached out towards the end of that invitational series and I'd just been told by GWS that day that they wanted to draft me," Sheerin told womens.afl.

"I was doing recovery after the game, and I was driving a car I'd bought from a car dealership. It has a CD player in it which sits underneath the back seats, so you don't really know it's in there. I bumped the media console, and it started playing this CD which was in the player. And it had one track on it – the Richmond Football Club song.

"It's still crazy, and it still sits in there, I'm treating it as a good luck charm. I'm never removing the CD from the car. I didn't think anything of it, and that night Libby Graham – who was also being signed by Richmond (through a trade from the Giants) – had reached out to see if it was OK to pass on my number to Trent.

"I was wary of the change, there wasn't much time before I had to be down in Melbourne, and I'd have to uproot my whole life. It was exciting, but there was a bit of fear in there as well.

"Initially I said no, that it was too short and I wasn't ready, that I wouldn't be able to get the most out of myself as a footballer if there were so many other elements changing. I spoke to my family and friends, and every single one said I had to do it, that there was no reason to not take up the opportunity.

"In that, the universe makes things charmingly obvious to you, and I had to come down and meet with the club, and once I did, I absolutely loved it."

The torn ACL which halted her journey at GWS was on the opposite knee to the one she had suffered 10 years earlier as a semi-professional soccer player, and she subsequently drifted away from the sport.

Sheerin picked up football through friends at Newtown in either 2018 or 2019 (she's not too sure on the finer details), and had primarily played as an inside midfielder throughout, making her All-Australian squad nod as a rebounding half-back even more astonishing.

"I hadn't played backline until this year. You just go in with a growth mindset and being eager to learn. I'm so lucky, yes, I'm having to learn it at the top level, not local, but we've got great coaches as well, who understand exactly what you have to do," Sheerin said.

"Richmond's always been really great, they say play to your strengths. So when you're out there, play to your natural instincts, but here are some basic structures to play around. The messaging from the club down to our backs coach, Lauren Tesoriero, is really simple, clear and easy to follow.

"I'm surrounded by some amazing players that help provide that guidance, Bec Miller is such a general back there with a great voice, Beth Lynch is another one who has played 25-plus games, and even Libby, who's just come in and playing more consistent games, she's so keen to learn and has come along in leaps and bounds."

Sheerin works as a business development manager for a company her mum, Petra Playfair, started 35 years ago, which specialises in visas and migration.

Conveniently, the company has offices in both Sydney and Dandenong in Melbourne, meaning she was able to continue her role after moving for AFLW, and she can also work from home when required.

"She's an absolute gun, she's been a finalist for Telstra's businesswoman of the year a couple of times, they've been the largest provider of legal assistance to asylum seekers. So as a consequence of that, I've worked in detention centres, both in Australia and internationally," Sheerin said.

"I used to spend a lot of time flying up to Manus Island and doing the claims assistance, providing provisions to the asylum seekers who were held in detention centres up there.

"We've now moved a little more into the corporate space, and I'm the director of a division we've created to help migrants, predominantly from south-east Asia, to help them come to Australia and help them set up businesses here and thrive."

Tigers v North SF preview: New-look teams for do-or-die battle

Gemma Bastiani
womens.afl
11 November 2022

A draw two weeks ago between Richmond and North Melbourne has, oddly, led to the pair meeting again in this weekend's do or die semi final. Although just 13 days will have passed since they last played, plenty has changed for both teams and a draw is no longer on the cards.

Head-to-head history

Richmond and North Melbourne have played four times since the former joined the competition in 2020. The Kangaroos took the win in the first three, before the draw a fortnight ago. Against the Roos, Richmond averages a score of 24.3 points, while North Melbourne averages 51.8 points in corresponding games.

Last time they met

A dramatic draw in front of a sold-out Arden Street crowd in round 10 ultimately dictated the make-up of the top eight. Monique Conti and Ash Riddell each won 21 disposals, while Ellie McKenzie starred with two goals.

The Kangaroos were without captain Emma Kearney and ruck Kim Rennie, and lost rebounding defender Erika O'Shea to injury during the game. As a result, North Melbourne coach Darren Crocker was forced to adjust his structures. Emma King had to play as the side's number one ruck, leaving Tahlia Randall as the lone tall marking target in the Roos' attack.

Richmond stopper Meg Macdonald went to star Jasmine Garner through the middle and held her to just 13 disposals - Garner's fewest since 2019 - which played a significant part in slowing the Roos down.

It all came down to a desperate effort from Emelia Yassir to rush one final behind for her Tigers to even up the scoreboard after North Melbourne, exemplifying just how tight the tussle was for the duration.

Key matchup

Bec Miller against Tahlia Randall looms as the key one-on-one match-up for this one, especially after the Tigers' defence was exposed in the air last week. Randall took three contested marks last time these two teams met and is averaging 1.9 marks inside 50 and 1.9 contested marks this season, kicking 10 goals in the process.

In round 10 Miller was playing just her second game back from a hamstring injury, but this time around she has three consecutive games back under her belt and will no doubt be itching for another crack at Randall.

For Randall it comes down to her ability to convert. Getting access to the ball is less of an issue, North Melbourne's midfield has proven it can get it in her vicinity, the forward just needs to make the most of those opportunities.

The state of play

As is the nature of the top eight format, one team - Richmond - approaches this game off the back of a loss, while North Melbourne has kept its hopes alive after eking past Geelong. Nonetheless, both have well and truly experienced the pressure and tension of finals footy.

The biggest shift for this matchup since last time is the return of Kearney and Rennie for North Melbourne. Kearney offers dash and composure out of the back half, with her ability to gain ground with run and carry limiting the impact conditions can have on North Melbourne's defensive exit. In addition, a small forward like Yassir will need to be hyper vigilant of Kearney's impact and play largely as a defensive forward rather than focus only on their own attacking game.

Rennie, meanwhile, adds some height and athleticism through the middle of the ground while also allowing Emma King and Randall to sit as tall key forward targets, splitting defensive units' focus across the dangerous pair.

Richmond cannot get stuck playing straight line footy again like it did last week against Brisbane. The Tigers look at their best when pressuring the opposition, then once the ball is won, using the width of the ground to find space and time to deliver the ball inside 50 with composure. They showed just how good they can be in this respect in the final quarter last week, and should they execute that more consistently through the four quarters, they will be exceptionally hard to beat.

North Melbourne, on the other hand, showed last week just how relentless its defence can be. They conceded 41 inside 50s, but only one goal, as the likes of Brooke Brown, Jasmine Ferguson and Sarah Wright created an impenetrable wall. For this reason, considered attack from the Tigers will be vital, otherwise they will be playing right into the Kangaroos' hands.

Tip:

In one of the most difficult matches to tip this season, the Kangaroos' experience will come to the fore. North Melbourne by three points.

Richmond Tigers v North Melbourne Kangaroos Preview

Sarah Burt
7news
12 November 2022

There’s been controversy galore ahead of the AFLW semi-finals with Richmond refusing to move their finals clash with North Melbourne from the Punt Road Oval - despite that ground’s limited capacity.

The Tigers have been caught in the eye of a finals storm after tickets quickly sold out and fans from both clubs realised they would not be able to attend the game.

So what does all of that mean for the semi-final? We take a look.

LAST TIME THEY MET

The Roos and Tigers clashed just two weeks ago and it ended up in a heart-stopping draw in front of a crowd of 3,147 at Arden Street Oval.

That match gave the Tigers a double chance for the finals while sinking the Kangaroos to the bottom of the eight.

North Melbourne was without their star captain Emma Kearney (knee soreness) and key ruck Kim Rennie also missed through health and safety protocols.

Ellie McKenzie starred for the Tigers, and they controlled most of the first quarter, while Kangaroo Emma King stepped up in the ruck with 27 hitouts..

North Melbourne struggled to capitalise on their forward pressure and were inaccurate in front of goal, which ultimately led to the sides being deadlocked on the final bell.

KEY MATCH-UP: Jasmine Garner v Meg McDonald

Richmond prioritised tagging two-time North Melbourne best and fairest Jasmine Garner in round 10. It worked, with Tiger Meg Macdonald keeping the prolific midfielder to just 13 touches. Now that Kearney is back, Richmond will need to watch her off halfback too.

HOW HEALTHY IS THE TEAM?

Richmond:

Sarah Hosking – Adductor (test)

Beth Lynch – Ankle (test)

North Melbourne:

Perri King – Finger (TBC)

Cassidy Mailer- Leg (indefinite)

Erika O’Shea – Eye (test)

Who wins?

North Melbourne have never lost to Richmond, and have never lost at Punt Road either, making the commentary around the Tigers’ home ground advantage at the venue an interesting narrative.

The width of Punt Road is wider than GMHBA stadium, where the Kangaroos played last week, and the wide ground seems to help North’s ball movement. The Tigers will be aware of this and will likely utilise the likes of Mon Conti and Ellie McKenzie to cover the extra space.

There was a lot of conversation around North Melbourne’s Garner and Tiger Conti battling it out for points in the Coaches Association Champion Player Award (which Garner eventually claimed) last time they met, however, this time there is a whole lot more at stake and these two excel under pressure.

Tip:

North Melbourne defeat Richmond.

Breeze seems to be affecting kicking for goal at the Brunton Ave end especially from the Punt Rd side. North missed two sitters.

North with the slight breeze this qtr.

Why wasn't that 50 to Jess? North player wasn't standing on the mark and then wouldn't let go of Jess? Ump just allows play on?

Egan pinged for HTB and North get a goal from it.

Wakefield marks 40 out. Kicks sideways to McKenzie who can kick longer. She goes long and lands on the pack in the goalsquare. Yassir snaps a goal  :gotigers.

This has been our softest "effort" for the year. North are actually waiting for us to go first for the ball in defence then feed off us meekly coughing it up.

Half-time

Richmond     3.0    4.0-24
North Melb.   3.2    8.5-53

I'm glad we're kicking it long but Ferguson has to structure the forward line for it to work. Not have Cox (a small defender) as the only one forward of centre when kicking off HB.

3/4 time

Richmond     3.0    4.0      6.0-36
North Melb.   3.2    8.5    10.6-66

Goals: Yassir 2, Brennan, Wakefield, Conti, Cox.

Lifted our intensity at the ball and tried to play more direct that quarter but forward structure was off, entries were blind and still as has happened all game defensively we're being left 10-15m off our direct opponents when North have the ball.

Preseason needs to involve plenty of 200m gut-runs in both directions. We can't run with finalists on the outside spread.

Wasn’t able to watch the game. Disappointing to go out in straight sets but with the current fixture setup was always a chance. North are much better then where they finished on the ladder, they just had a tougher fixture then us.

Still good for the girls to get that finals experience. Hopefully we can add a few quality players in a trade/draft and just keep improving our bottom 6 players.

-----------------------------------------------------

Richmond AFLW's finals campaign has come to an end after a 36-point loss to North Melbourne on Saturday at the Swinburne Centre.

The Roos – inspired by an ultra-determined Jas Garner – produced their highest score of the season in the 11.8 (74) to 6.2 (38) win, while the Tigers should be proud of their improved season.

As expected, Richmond tagger Meg Macdonald renewed acquaintances with Garner, but the superstar Roo was more than up to the task, recording nine disposals and four clearances in the first term.

Macdonald started the second term on the bench receiving treatment on her left knee, but saw out the game against the Roo, who finished with 22 disposals, seven clearances, seven tackles and two goals.

Having shots on goal has never been an issue for North Melbourne, but its goalkicking accuracy has cost them in a few games this season.

That was not the case in the second quarter, piling on five goals as Garner pushed forward to continue to break the tag, and Emma King's height proved to be a troubling factor for the Tigers' backline.

The Tigers didn't go into their shell after half-time, starting to even up the midfield contest and seeing the margin only extend by one point, but the gap was too big to bridge.

Small forward Emelia Yassir was a constant threat in attack for the Tigers, while key forward Courtney Wakefield can hold her head up high if it turns out Saturday was the 35-year-old's final AFLW game, having been chaired off at the conclusion of the game.

For the Roos, Ash Riddell produced a strong four-quarter game, with Jenna Bruton's pressure around the contest key to the result, and Brooke Brown and Emma Kearney working well off half-back.

Richmond forward Courtney Wakefield has announced her retirement from AFLW football after four seasons and 30 games at the top level.

A former junior footballer in the Sunraysia region, Wakefield was forced to give up the game she loved for close to 20 years before attending a Richmond Talent ID Day in Bendigo, just seven weeks after giving birth to her second child.

Aged 31 at the time, Wakefield joined Richmond ahead of the Club's initial VFLW season in 2018, making the 1200km round trip to Melbourne from her home at Top Hut Station for training sessions and games.

Wakefield was the Club's first VFLW elevation onto its inaugural AFLW list, quickly establishing herself as one of the competition's best key forwards.

The 35-year-old had a career-best season in Season 7, booting 14 goals and earning selection in the All-Australian squad of 42.

Wakefield finishes her career with 31 majors, having topped the Tigers' goalkicking in 2020 and Season 7.

An excellent contested mark, reliable kick at goal, and strong pressure player, Wakefield will be remembered as a popular teammate and person to have around the Club.

The mother of two said it was difficult to call time on her AFLW career- sighting the desire to return home full time to her farm in Top Hut with her husband Tom and children Tilly and Sid as a critical factor.

"It is always hard to walk away from something that you love and (while) knowing that I am still very capable of performing at the top level, but I have made a lot of sacrifices over the years," she said.

"We are lucky enough to have been able to create a very beautiful life prior to starting in the AFLW, and I am really excited for what lies ahead of us.

"This (football) journey has been remarkable; it has been character-building and life-changing; I have lived out a childhood dream."

Wakefield said she was proud to have been a part of the Richmond Women's program from the beginning.

"From day one, I guess I have been a part of making history which is very special, and the foundations laid will live on long after I am gone," she added.

"It has obviously been challenging; being a mum and a wife, spending so much time away from my children. But the Club and my teammates' support has been unwavering.

"I just hope I fulfilled my end of the bargain over the last four seasons."

Richmond Head of Women's Football, Kate Sheahan, paid tribute to Wakefield.

"We cannot thank Courtney and her family enough for their sacrifices and contributions to the Richmond Football Club," she said.

"With the setbacks, roadblocks, and kilometers travelled along the way, it would have been easy for Courtney to say it is all too hard, but her determination, dedication, and style of play have seen her remain such a great role model for her teammates across her entire Richmond journey.

"Courtney goes out while at the top of her game, and I am thrilled she has gained some recognition this year. Her story will be told for many years to come."

Firstly, great effort to make finals and experience the next level. We still have a long way to go.

Congratulations to Wakefield a star tiger who will always be remembered as our first star forward.

North were far too good by foot and dominated in the air I think taking twice as many marks as us and killing it inside fifty by taking grabs when we could not buy a mark inside 50.
They also had excellent spread and ball movement across the ground which we would’ve known from last game but we didn’t learn or execute a defence for it.

Slow start but Conti was good as usual once she got her first touch, McKenzie was lively but her disposal wasn’t to the level. Wakefield battled hard up forward but dropped a couple she should’ve taken.
Brennan was very good but under-utilised and also robbed of a clear goal and the goal ump clearly said “I’m not sure!”  when asked by the field ump and then he said something and she said “ok” and makes the touched signal.  :banghead :banghead
The umpiring was of a very low standard and as usual we got robbed on most occasions by north blatant dropping the ball (incorrect disposal) but no free kick :banghead :banghead
How Hosking wasn’t awarded a fifty I still have no idea. Crazy.  :banghead :banghead

Our best were Sheerin, Conti, Yassir, Seymour, McKenzie, Cox, Sarah Hosking and Lynch

Very disappointing or clearly beaten by their opponents were Egan, McClelland, Lavey, Miller, Graham,Reid, McDonald, Shevlin, Dempsey

The worst player in the game, Poopy Kelly / terrible player.  :banghead

Hopefully we find some taller options and much better marks than we have now and we work hard to improve our skills especially the fundamentals. We need to find more players like Sheerin and recruit ball winners and girls that can take a mark. Sounds obvious and simple but we don’t have enough of those types like North did and it showed.

Great improvement from last season I think we can improve again hopefully we invest more into the girls and make the leap into premiership next season. A start would be to get our own VfLW team.

Shame we couldn’t find another gear for the finals but great season by the tiger girls

Apart from the stuffing umpire idiots I don’t think we were as injury free as we would have liked, don’t think MonCon was 100% all gamr

Positives
Winning mindset
Sheeran, Yassir and even though she saved her worst two games of the season for the finals Reid
Think Cox is a good pressure player who showed her versatility by not playing forward all year until this game and having a good one

Negatives
Kelly and Williams

Thanks Wakefield for being a great target who will be hard to replace although I think as Brennan gets older she will play deeper

6 players having 5 or less possessions and another 4 under 10 just leaves too much burden on the other girls. Essentially too much left to too few.

We also have Birchell coming back

Would also expect (hope) Brennan can get over her foot issues

There will be changes but there is still alot to be excited about

Straight sets, but it's not all bad

Richmond might have been dismissed in straight sets in its first finals series, but there are countless positives to come out of the season and one big one from the semi-final loss. Despite going down by 36 points to North Melbourne, unheralded defender Katelyn Cox showed just what she is made of. After being signed by the Kangaroos as an inactive player replacement in 2021, and delisted without making her debut, Cox went back to the VFLW and developed her footy. That earned her selection at the most recent draft and Cox has since played every possible game for the Tigers this season. Typically a running, rebounding defender, Cox was tasked with a defensive forward role on Roos captain Emma Kearney and didn't just work to stop the star, but also kicked her first ever AFLW goal to open the game.

But it was all about control

Gemma Bastiani
womens.afl
16 November 2022

While Garner breaking free and King playing more as a stay-at-home forward was essential, it really came down to the controlling style of play North Melbourne was able to execute, effectively playing 'keepings off' footy.

The Kangaroos not only won more possession than they did in round 10, but also found more of it on the outside, therefore limiting the pressure Richmond was able to apply.

North Melbourne's outside ball

                      Contested     Uncontested       Total          Contested    Uncontested
                     Possessions    Possessions    Possessions   Possession    Possession
                                                                                     rate (%)      rate (%)

Round 10              111               94               205               54.1            45.9

Semi Final             113             121               234               48.3            51.7

In turn with North Melbourne's increase in uncontested possession and increased reliance on kicks over handballs, it dominated the mark count, registering 33 more than the Tigers and 65 in total. In the second quarter alone, the Kangaroos took 29 marks to Richmond's eight.

North Melbourne's shift to kick & control

Kicks    Kick differential      Marks     Mark differential

Round 10           134             +18                 39               +21

Semi Final          166             +48                 65               +33

Richmond in fact generated more inside 50s and scored more efficiently in Saturday's semi-final than it did in round 10, but it was opened up on the turnover as North Melbourne kicked 51 points - 68.9 per cent of its total score - from turnover.

By using clean, controlled movement around the ground, North Melbourne's deliveries forward proved far more effective, despite registering 35 inside 50s, exactly the same number as in round 10. By picking their way down the ground and hitting up neat targets up forward, the Tigers' defence was forced into more one-on-one battles, which was unsettling for the home side.

This season Richmond has forced poor, chaotic forward entries from its opponents, meaning its defensive line could move across and provide support to one another, but with the elite inside 50s North Melbourne was able to bring on Saturday that defensive style was simply not possible.

North Melbourne's targeted attack

Scoring Efficiency (%)     Goal Efficiency (%)       Goal Accuracy (%)

Round 10              37.1                             8.6                             23.1

Semi Final             65.7                           31.4                             47.8

As a result, those 35 inside 50s were far more effective, with the Roos goaling from 31.4 per cent of their entries on Saturday, compared to just 8.6 per cent in round 10.

With that methodical, considered ball movement North Melbourne was able to cut through the pressured, defensive structure that has brought Richmond so much success this season, ultimately winning through to a maiden preliminary final berth.

X-rated message in full view lands Richmond AFLW star Jess Hosking in hot water: ‘Deeply disappointed’

The AFL has handed down its verdict after the AFLW star displayed offensive words on her shoulder strapping.

Richmond AFLW star Jess Hosking has apologised for a sinister message written on her shoulder straps during last weekend’s semi-final loss to North Melbourne.

7NEWS reporter Mitch Cleary revealed the AFL issued the star Tiger with a ‘please explain’ notice after Channel 7 cameras picked up the crude message during the live broadcast of the game.

Hosking, who played the game with both shoulders strapped, had a stack of different words written on the strapping, but it was the “Kill B*tches” comment on her right shoulder that drew the ire of the AFL.

The AFL confirmed in a statement to 7NEWS that Hosking had escaped punishment for the “offensive language.”

“The AFL issued a please explain to Richmond’s Jess Hosking after an inappropriate message was written on her shoulder strapping during the Richmond and North Melbourne final last weekend,” the statement read.

“Hosking was extremely remorseful and deeply disappointed in her actions. The AFL has since accepted a letter of apology from Jess and has issued an official warning to the club and Jess regarding the offensive language.”

She was also pictured during the qualifying loss to Brisbane with a message in a similar place on her shoulder, which read “Smash B*itches”.

Incidentally, Hosking’s twin sister Sarah appeared to take an aggressive mindset into the clash against the Kangaroos with a series of big bumps throughout the match.

Her crunching bump on Mia King left the Roo in serious discomfort, but Hosking was ultimately cleared by the Match Review Officer.

“Oh Hosking! She has floored Mia King with a brutal bump, and King is very slow to rise,” Channel 7 commentator Alister Nicholson said at the time.

“She is picking them off left, right and centre at the moment, Sarah Hosking - and she is shaken, Mia King.”

Richmond bowed out of the finals in straights sets after finishing fourth on the ladder.

They played North Melbourne twice in three weeks, drawing with the Kangaroos in the final game of the home and away season.

It was the club’s first finals series since they joined the AFLW in 2020.

Shouldn't have anything written on them at all .. can't believe it was allowed

It's like she's a 12yo getting her friends at school to write on a plaster cast

A lot of the boys write messages on their wrist straps. I know Dan Rioli does it every game except he writes stuff such as ‘run/chase/pressure’ rather than ‘kill b*tches’ lol

Ch7 don't have to take close ups of our girls' strapping & the onus should be on them to control their images just like they would with the men's game.  Take a wide shot & none of it could offend.
Also, who cares if the girls play with a bit of backbone?  We encourage it in the men's game, why not the women's game too?
What's the bet an opposition player has "Smash C*nt*" written on their strapping ... (urging her to "Smash Conti" ...)       :o

I don’t think this is a men v women thing. If a similar message was written on one of the boys strapping I would expect the afl to respond in the exact same way.

Agree on this 100%

As for a little thing on wrist strapping, what a strange comparison compared to this

Writing a small run kick chase on a message is one thing .. having a third party fill your strapping with nonsense that she wouldn’t even be able to read is a totally different matter

I’m the opposite of PC correct and this offends me zero .. I just think it’s unprofessional, childish and looks ridiculous

That’s just my opinion on it

North have been eliminated in the Prelim by Melbourne. Just further illustrates the gap between the top sides and us and where we need to improve and eventually get to.
