As per thread title - Which Richmond players did you once think were going to be elite but for whatever reason never got there?
-
Thought Vickery would be much better. Had talent just no heart. Same with Griffiths.
Stack. Lennon. Conca.
-
Ben Lennon
Looking at the players in the other thread about the 2000 list. I thought Homewood was going to be a good player. Got that one a bit wrong :lol
Also Liam McBean, massive disappointment
And throw in Jayden Post for good measure
-
Mark Coughlan, so unlucky
-
Dragasevic
-
Really depends on what you consider elite to be
I thought Lids was going to be a stuff .. best few in the comp level, but never got there
Also thought Tambling would reach far greater heights and be “elite”
-
Had high expectations for JON considering he had the best highlights package Francis “Betamax” Jackson had ever seen.
-
Andrew Raines. Finished second in the rising star and thought we had a father son gun on our hands. Then the tagging role got phased out of the AFL and his average skills were exposed.
-
The tagging role saved Raines' career. Made a good go of it at Brisbane and got to punch Joel Selwood. Never tagged for us but did show some dash off half back. Did struggle for form post 2007 with us
-
Justin Plapp
-
Cool hand Luke McGuane

Cool hand Luke McGuane
Right now Id take him as a backup forward option for season 2023!
-
Going back in time :-
Steven James
Justin Murphy
Anthony Banik
Stephen Ryan
Stephen Jurica
Nathan Brown (until the leg injury)
Graham Polak (until the tram hit him)
I actually though Aaron Fiora would be good for about a minute :lol
Stewart Edwards

Wasn't Jackson it was Greg Miller.
-
Aaron James
Ezra Poyas
Richard Tambling
-
Tambling for sure for me. Watched his first pre season game against Pies live and thought wow, he is going to be a stuff.
He wasn't......
-
I did have faith in Tambo for a long time. Glad he never played against us at the G to be honest, poor bloke would have got booed out of the building by some ferals

Didn’t he tag ricciuto in that infamous game against the crows where we just played keepings off for 4 quarters? Lol
-
Haha I can't remember much from that game apart from the Bowdens kicking the ball to each other 619 times
-
Going back a fair while but I thought Craig Smith was going to be a gun in senior footy. He starred at U19s level.

I don't remember either, but going by the stats, Raines had 20 possies (19 uncontested). It might have been Daniel Jackson who tagged?

from word go not many at all.
Expectations have always been tempered. Anyway i think the elite tag is well and truly overused these days.
Plenty have one maybe two elite traits but fall away in many other areas.
My angst with our supporters is they tend to put on pedestals players who dont have one elite trait.

Dean Polo after his first game

Dean Polo after his first game
So true
Marty McGrath too

Back in the 90s I thought Steven Jurica was going to be the next Tony Locket .
I alway thought that Tambling would come good - he never did
Conca was also a disappointment in the end .
Griffiths was also meant to be our forward line saviour
Polo and Raines are also notable mentions .
-
RCD. The next Chris Judd. I hoped.
-
Remember Matthew Manfield? Thought he was going to be the next Kouta ::)

OMG, yes, he was terrible

Dan Foley (#37) kicking 5 goals in a half against Essendon at Windy Hill in 1983.
