Champion Data has named its mid-season All-Australian team, and it is packed with surprises.
But analyst Daniel Hoyne wants to make one thing very clear: every pick is based on data.

Mid-year All-Aus contenders at your club
Ben Waterworth, Ben Cotton and David Zita
Fox Sports

RICHMOND
No standouts at the Tigers, but a few that’ll be around the mark. He was in the 44-man All-Australian squad last year, but Daniel Rioli will be pushing for a spot in the 22 this year, averaging 23.0 disposals per outing. Shai Bolton, according to Champion Data, is the AFL’s No.1 rated mid-forward, booting 15 goals while averaging 21.5 disposals, 6.5 score involvements and 5.3 inside 50s - while Dustin Martin ranks fifth as a general forward. Noah Balta would be a sneaky key defensive chance, while selectors surely have to consider Tim Taranto, who’s ranked fifth for disposals, first for tackles and seventh for clearances; though a lack of damage from said disposals means he doesn’t rank in Champion Data’s top 20 midfielders.

Should Dustin Martin be in the All-Australian team?
Stats guru Daniel Hoyne says it’s one of the easiest calls of the year.
HeraldSun
August 23, 2023 - 5:17PM
Dustin Martin should be a “walk-up” for this year’s All-Australian team after producing numbers never seen before by Champion Data.
But stats guru Daniel Hoyne is worried the Tigers champ will be overlooked by selectors.
“Sometimes the superstars get compared to themselves as opposed to getting compared to the competition,” the Champion Data analyst said on Pure Footy.
“He should be a walk-up – here’s your jacket, what size are you, put it on next Wednesday night.”
“It’s frustrating when you hear people say, ‘He’s had an OK year’, but he hasn’t had an OK year, he has been frightening ... Since round 14 he’s the third-best player in the competition behind only Charlie Curnow and Jack Sinclair.”
Across the season, Martin is the fourth-highest rated forward under Champion’s 100X ratings system, behind Curnow, Toby Greene and Taylor Walker.
He ranks first among all forwards for disposals – averaging 23.1 per game – contested possessions and forward-50 ground ball gets, and fifth for score involvements.
Hoyne said the numbers were even more impressive because Martin was playing only 14 per cent of game time in the midfield.
“He plays 86 per cent of his time as a forward and he’s winning 23 disposals – that has never been done in 18 years of us capturing time in position data.
“No player who has spent 85 per cent forward time or more in a season has won more ball than Dusty has this year.”

Lmao @ Bumblers & Wanchors having 3 players shortlisted...yep still a joke.... :shh
-
All Australian is a joke
They will probably name Nick Daicos as Captain
-
Based on the year soley the fwd half should be easy.
F: Bruest - Larkey - Cameron
HF: Green - Walker - Curnow.
C: Dawson - Petracca - ####
R: Marshall - Bontompelli - ####
HB: N Daicos - Moore - ####
FB: Stewart - Andrew/Wietering - ####
Int: Taranto - #### - #### - ####.
The blanks im undecided on just looking for the best performed in each position.
Think Dawson from the crows gets a wing.
Moore gets chb and N Daicos gets hbf.
Ruckman for me would be Marshall.Bont and Petracca get mid spots
.
Two tigers for me should have at least made the top 40 and i would probably have picked them on the bench in Taranto and Bolton. Reckon Rioli would have had to be in the mix at hb at the very least for top 40.
-
HTF did Taranto miss out. AFL are stuffen morons

Hutchy: "How have you justified him not being in the squad of 44?"
Cornes: "If you think I've got that much influence over the AA squad, you're kidding yourself"
Hutchy puts the hard questions to Kane Cornes over Tim Taranto's absence from the AA squad.

We all love Dusty but he just doesnt make as a fwd or a mid for me despite having a good season. Not enough goals only 25 and there were more deserving mids.
For me i went Larkey at ff because he kicked 71 goals in what was a wooden spoon side thats some effort.
Walker at chf and again he not only got plenty of ball but kicked heaps of goals 76 of them.. I picked Curnow as the third tall sort of Jack Gunston type again marks goals 78 of them and plenty of ball.
The smaller fwds its the same Cameron kicked 53 goals, Green kicked 60 and Bruest had a great season as a pure fwd kicking 47 goals.
Lets not forget the primary role of any fwd that is to kick goals.
What i dont get is if they want to pick a best 22 then just pick the 22 best players.
If the 22 is based on position then stop muddying the waters and just pick the best players in the roles and stop trying to fit in big names into secondary roles.
-
I think of it the other way. If you had one more forward spot left on your dream team and you had to choose between dusty or Breust who are you picking?
-
There isn’t a team in the league that plays 6 traditional forwards. There is always atleast one mid-fwd running through there and in that sense I think that’s how they should structure the fwd line. Whether the best mid-fwd this season has been dusty is another conversation.

'That's the reality': Kane Cornes defends shock omission of Tiger Tim Taranto from All-Australian squad
Anna Pavlou
Nine
30 August 2023
Port Adelaide champion and All-Australian selector Kane Cornes has defended the panel's decision to omit Richmond's Tim Taranto amongst others from the initial squad.
It comes after Cornes was vocal earlier in the season that Taranto "wouldn't be in the top 150 players in the game right now", suggesting the Richmond recruit "didn't influence games".
Despite Taranto's season being touted as one of the strongest, with an elite average of 28 disposals in 2023, Cornes stood firm on the panel's major decision that has left the AFL community scratching their heads.
"There's always good players who miss out. We thought there were midfielders in front of him, that's the reality of it," Cornes said on SEN.
"You can look at his numbers as a lot of people have done, or you can look at his numbers a little bit closer, as we tended to do in the meeting this week.
"He had a very strong season… there's always good players who miss out and he was one of them according to the panel."
Cornes was the centre of criticism regarding Taranto's omission, with Richmond legend Matthew Richardson labelling as "ridiculous" the comments Cornes made earlier in the year.
The panel of 10 selectors included Cornes, Gill McLachlan, Eddie Betts, Jude Bolton, Nathan Buckley, incoming CEO Andrew Dillon, Glen Jakovich, Laura Kane, Cameron Ling and Matthew Pavlich.

The best course of action is for Tim to have a big pre-season & prove Cornes wrong ... more wrong, even ...
It must be good to be a journo with the right job to spend all year potting a player & then also be on the AA selection committee where you can campaign to leave the said player out of the AA squad, thereby proving yourself to be right! *clap clap ... *crickets ... :-\

I think of it the other way. If you had one more forward spot left on your dream team and you had to choose between dusty or Breust who are you picking?
Bruest based on this year for the role of fwd. Its an AA team and there are plenty of mid /fwds in it as it is.

I think of it the other way. If you had one more forward spot left on your dream team and you had to choose between dusty or Breust who are you picking?
Bruest based on the fact he's not a Richmond player.

This AA team would get smashed by every other AA team by 10 goals …

Underwhelming

final 10 games of the season (averages):
- 28 disposals
- 11 contested possessions
- 10 score involvements
- 1.5 goals
and this is nowhere close to his best 10 game stretch
he’s also playing 86% as a forward. with less then 5 CBA’s per game. it’s just crazy we’re so numb
possibly a very wild thing to say but this might be his best H/A season since 2017

Let’s be honest.
This award and the clowns who vote on the panel have about as much credibility as Robbo’s top 50. The fringe selections are done to provoke some supporters and have others feeling good about themselves.
Who really cares what they think?
-
The primary award Dusty is interested in is a premiership medal
-
Definitely his best season since 2017 IMO.
Has often looked like the passion isn't there until the moment comes ie grand finals.
Several times this year I thought he looked hungry again.
-
Congrats Bont, best captain in the AFL.
Sorry though, Greene is AA capatain?

Foxfooty.com.au assesses and ranks the ‘unlucky 22’ that didn’t make the 2022 All-Australian team.
1. Dustin Martin (Richmond)
“My opinion, it’s a flat out error. It’s as simple as that,” David King said.
“He’s been judged against his standard of the past, not the standard of the competition or what’s happened in 2023. The year he’s had across half-froward has been unbelievable.
“I probably had (Kyle) Langford on par with him, if not fractionally in front, prior to the last fortnight of the season. But he finished so strong he stamped the year for me.
“Had I done an All-Australian team at the end of the year, you would’ve had to have had him in centre-forward somewhere.”
