Giants' dual reunion adds spice to crucial clash
By Daniel Garb
afl.com.au
31 May 2023
A DOUBLE reunion on Sunday provides an intriguing sub-plot for Greater Western Sydney's clash with Richmond as the Giants try and build on their famous win over Geelong.
The reception on and off the ground for 2019 club champion Tim Taranto at Giants Stadium for the first match-up with his former teammates will provide the main talking point come bouncedown.
GWS coach Adam Kingsley will also guide his side for the first time against the Tigers, where he was an assistant for four seasons, including the 2019 premiership campaign.
Along with the memories though, is a strong grasp of how Richmond plays, which Kingsley said may prove valuable as the Giants look to notch up back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
"It could be, I certainly understand how they play. The challenge for us is to transfer our knowledge onto the players," he said.
"I'm not sure if they've changed any element of their game plan under Andrew McQualter. The only thing I saw is they started Marlion Pickett on the inside in a run-with role. That would be different."
The threat of Taranto is obvious after his 33-disposal, four-goal game in the Tigers' loss to Port Adelaide on the weekend.
But what sort of reception he gets from the GWS faithful after he chose to depart the club for which he played 114 games will be of interest.
"I'd imagine the crowd will try and put him off and show their support for our players as they should. He's a high-quality player, obviously, and has been all season for them, he's one player we need to make sure we contain," Kingsley said.
"I'm not sure what the players reaction will be, they're all quite friendly but once the ball's bounced it's up against them and we'll do whatever it takes."

Taranto's reception, really?
GWS had put themselves in a position where he didn't fit into their TPP lol
Taranto did them a favour walking out, Hopper too. They should concede two easy goals in the first quarter to say thanks for each one.
-
Yeah, 1500 GWS fans, most of who have no idea and thought they were going to see an NRL game - TT will be shaking in his boots at the reception

GWS v Richmond Preview
Andrew Slevison
SEN
1 June 2023
The Giants return home after a smash and grab job in Geelong last weekend.
They got the job done over the Cats in Toby Greene’s 200th game with the inspirational captain himself kicking four goals.
Adam Kingsley’s side has been more than competitive in 2023 with their 65-point loss to Collingwood in Round 9 the only match they’ve played in this season where the margin was over 21 points either way.
They meet a Richmond team that has similarly been competitive. The Tigers have lost two on the trot by just one point (to Essendon) and 10 points (to Port Adelaide), with the most recent being under interim coach Andrew McQualter following Damien Hardwick’s departure.
This presents as a fairly significant match for both sides given they occupy 14th and 15th positions respectively.
While neither the Giants or Tigers are being earmarked to play finals, four points would push the victor a little closer to the top eight and keep their hopes alive.
The home team has a massive dominance in this fixture (including GWS’ ‘home’ win at Marvel in 2021), winning 14 on the trot, which bodes well for the Giants. The Tigers haven’t beaten GWS away from Melbourne since 2014 so will need to buck a serious trend here.
Kingsley’s outfit has shipped the third most points so far this season, copping three scores of 100 or more against them in their last six, which also includes scores against of 92 and 86.
Richmond has struggled to find connection in attack over the last two weeks, returning 70 and 67, but their defensive game has been in better order.
It’s a genuine 50-50, but with ex-Giant Tim Taranto in stellar form, the Tigers might get the edge ever so slightly in a contest which could easily go either way.
Tip: Richmond by 8 points.

THE CERTAINTIES FOR ROUND 12
Andrew Slevison
SEN
2 June 2023
GWS versus Richmond
Taranto to have 25+ disposals, 3+ clearances, 3+ tackles
Tim Taranto has been outstanding for the Tigers this year, particularly in recent weeks.
In last week’s loss to Port, he had 33 touches, seven tackles, seven clearances and also kicked an equal career-high four goals.
This year for Richmond he averages 30.8 disposals, 6.9 tackles and 6.8 clearances.
Taranto meets his former club the Giants for the first time on Sunday and if the Tigers are to get up, they’ll need their prized recruit to fire.
We’re backing the former GWS best and fairest to pick up at least 25 touches, and we’ll throw in at least three clearances and at least three tackles into the mix for good measure.
Greene and Daniels to combine for 3+ goals
GWS captain Toby Greene booted four goals in his 200th game against Geelong last week.
He has now kicked 26 for the season across nine games and has kicked 10 in his last five against the Tigers.
Brent Daniels has only kicked two goals in five games against Richmond, but has found some scoring form of late, booting three against the Cats after two against St Kilda the week prior.
We’ll go with the Giants’ small forward pairing to kick at least three goals between them against the Tigers this weekend.

Kingsley intel key to GWS claiming Richmond AFL scalp
Justin Chadwick
AAP
3 June 2023
GWS and Richmond will battle it out for the unofficial "Kingsley Cup" when they lock horns at Giants Stadium.
Adam Kingsley spent four years as an assistant at Richmond and helped the club win two flags before being appointed Giants coach at the end of last season.
His intimate knowledge of Richmond's players could prove to be a crucial advantage in Sunday's match.
GWS defender Lachie Whitfield reckons the match holds extra significance for Kingsley, with the first-year coach even jokingly dubbing it the "Kingsley Cup".
"He's keeping it relatively low-key," Whitfield said.
"But you can tell there's a little bit of extra passion in his voice when he's been addressing the lads.
"He did mention it as the Kingsley Cup earlier in the week, so hopefully we can lift that after the game."
The match will also mark Tim Taranto's first match against the Giants since joining Richmond at the end of last year.
Taranto booted four goals from 33 disposals in Richmond's 10-point loss to Port Adelaide last week, and he looms as a key figure against his former side.
"Tim was a big part of our culture up here in Sydney. Everyone loved him," Whitfield said.
"He was one of the most favoured guys here. Seeing him depart was pretty sad.
"He's doing really good things at Richmond - he's probably been one of their best players.
"I know the (Giants) boys will probably be getting into him pre-game and during the game, and then we'll share a beer with him after the game."
Richmond caretaker coach Andrew McQualter is looking forward to going head-to-head against his good friend Kingsley.
"I love Kingers. I look up to him a lot," McQualter said.
"He's been great for me personally, and was great for our footy club.
"I still speak to him a lot. I haven't spoken to him this week. I look forward to the challenge."

What’s your mood WP? We have a chance?
I reckon we are
Of course a chance
GWS are average at best
-
What’s your mood WP? We have a chance?
I reckon we are
I don't know anymore
I thought we'd beat Essendon and we found a new way to lose
Thought we were a massive show last week and look what happened
I'm just so bitterly disappointed with what we've dished up this season I've decided to go into each round now with zero expectations

Kmac with the defensive clearing kick. Dusty to Samson to Baker who hits up Jack 40 out. Chip over to Graham. Goal! :gotigers.
Rich 7.4-46
GWS 2.5-17
-
Can’t stand to watch Ralph smith anymore
-
Gone back to butchering the ball this quarter.
-
They are harder at and around the contest this quarter.
-
Another game where Richmond players get high whacks and no frees. Clear free to Nank in front of goal not paid ::).
-
Their pressure and speed is causing us some issues this quarter :help
-
Pathetic this quarter. The decision making has been abysmal. Constantly not wanting to kick and giving off to a teammate by hand under pressure and turning it over :banghead.
-
Kmac finally shows some poise out there for us and chips to Clarke. Lovely shot by Juddy too :gotigers.
Boy did we need that!
Rich 8.4-52
GWS 6.8-44
-
Quick transition with 30 secs to go. Balta to Cotch gets to Samson who kicks it inside 50.
Great stuff Shai on the boundary. Keeps it in and finds Kmac with 3 secs left. Kick after the siren. Goal! :gotigers
58 - 45 at half-time.
-
Half-time
Richmond 6.4 9.4-58
GWS 2.4 6.9-45
Goals: Riewoldt 2, Pickett, Bolton, Mansell, Taranto, McIntosh, Clarke, Graham.
Poor quarter overall both in the contest and usage/decision making on the outside but a couple of late goals has us still up.
We apparently went at just 25% efficiency going inside 50. So back to normal 2023 transmission that 2nd quarter :P.
-
Daniels has been subbed out for the Giants with a hammy. That's a big loss for them. Fahey subbed on.
-
Pathetic this quarter. The decision making has been abysmal. Constantly not wanting to kick and giving off to a teammate by hand under pressure and turning it over :banghead.
GWS pressure was elite
Looked much faster than us too once we turned it over

GWS pressure was elite
Looked much faster than us too once we turned it over
It's an open rebounding game like basketball. We're trying to play fast in waves running forward but every bad turnover by us leaves us wide open the other way defensively. That's why the Giants have free players everywhere :help.
-
That's a soft goal.
-
Another good chase down by Marlion. Shai's snap from 45 misses.
59 - 51
-
Grimes with his head ripped off and no free and then ump pays GWS a free in front of goal ::)
-
Samson good mark and goal :gotigers.
Rich 10.5-65
GWS 7.10-52
-
Hugo :facepalm
-
The story of this year is the number of unforced errors.
-
Hugo :facepalm
Such a panic merchant
-
Jack too unselfish 12m out and almost stuff it up. Got the goal anyway :gotigers.
Rich 11.5-71
GWS 7.11-53
-
The umps hating us today.
Just 6 frees in almost 3 quarters.
-
Jack from 55 hooks it and misses.
72 - 53
-
Clarke lace out to Jack on the lead 45 out. Misses to the left again.
73 - 53

Poor option Graham. Had a free man 25m forward rather than the long bomb to an outnumber Baker. Rushed.
74 - 54

Should have been a goal Bakes.
75 - 60

Finally got a free. Hooray!
Ross hits up Ryan just inside 50. Sprays it. Behind!

As usual it's the ones they don't pay to us.
Nank whacked on the top of his head.
Grimes having his head nearly ripped off.
Baker tackle not rewarded.
:thumbsdown
-
That no high to grimes compared to the soft as one they payed to the giants player. Not to mention we couldn’t get a holding the ball call until those last couple very late to save our lives :banghead

Panic footy.
Why tap/handball backwards to feet in the last two centrebounces :facepalm.
-
These umpires are ridiculous. It's not a choreographed dance routine -- if Cumberland wants to handball it to Dusty he is allowed to. FFS. :banghead
-
Cumberland subbed on and immediately fights and wins the free.
Tried to take the advantage to goal twice but denied by the umps ::).
Cumberland misses.
77 - 72
-
Oh man I can see where this is going.
-
Mansell subbed off by the way.
Grimes on the bench looking sore.

Dusty grubbers one from 40 and misses.
78 - 72

"Not 15" ::)

Not out on the full either
We will take it

stuff it, I'm off to LA.
-
We are just a dumb team that plays dumb tactics. Once again not protecting the defensive side :banghead.
-
GWS player on the mark moves and the umps calls us Bakes to play on rather than it being 50 ::)
Rushed point to us after Cumberland drops the mark.
86 - 84

Bakes through the middle to Hugo who goes long to Jack 10m out. Goal! :gotigers

How good is Pickett off his non-preferred? Seriously. A left foot assist AND left foot goal to put us 6 up.

Marlion was huge in the final moments.

Cumberland was on the bench to end the game .. as the sub this was obviously for negative reasons
Ryan shows signs
Clarke did some good things
Dunno that there was a huge amount of good signs from the kids
I actually enjoyed watching Jack wind back the clock

How bad was the surface today :thumbsdown Grounds in NSW are not to AFL standard.
In both games, players kept slipping near the boundary on the camera side where the old astroturf is. Dangerous too. Lucky no one did an ankle or knee slipping awkwardly on that crappy surface.

Statistically you'd think we should have lost this game
-
Pathetic honest same rubbish every week no leaders and same mistakes every week.
Thought Nank was outstanding today
Ditto Jack R and in the last qtr.
Baker showed great leadership as did Taranto, Broad and a few others

Nank was okay and the Rest were average.

Certainly was
Always more Tiger fans there than Giants
Same thing happens at the Gold Coast

Well they were effective so thank you. Please do more of the same.
It might only work if you're there in the flesh so please prioritise attending all matches.

THE RESULTS FROM ROUND 12 AND WHO IT SAYS MORE ABOUT
SEN
5 June 2023
GWS (104) - (110) Richmond
Buckley: “I think it speaks volumes for both for what looks like a match that doesn't really amount to much in the season.
“We don't believe that either of these sides are in the position to go and contend.
“GWS have come off against a really good win against Geelong, which looking at the Cats’ performance against the Dogs actually looks even better again.
“Then Richmond two weeks into McQualter’s caretaker role, gets his first win.
“I thought it was an excellent game, but I just thought that it says a bit more about Richmond.
“Even though Hardwick has stepped out but there's no doubt that he's left a playing group who have got just great belief in each other, and they'll buy into whatever they're asked to do and that doesn't happen overnight.
“It's something that is built in the culture of the Richmond football club and I'm pretty sure the supporters would have enjoyed seeing their guts at the end of the game to hold on and then, and then to finish that off.”

AFL Report Card: Round 12
Ben Waterworth, Catherine Healey, Jono Baruch and David Zita
Fox Sports
June 5th, 2023
RICHMOND
How’s your heart now, Tigers fans? It was sheer relief on Sunday for Richmond, which won its first game by six points or less from its past 16 events. The Tigers set the tone in the first quarter with a stunning six-goal Tigers blitz before the Giants worked their way back into the game and eventually took a lead late. But Judson Clarke levelled up the scores with just over two minutes to go, before Marlion Pickett broke free inside 50 and nailed a lovely left-foot goal to seal a memorable Richmond victory – and interim coach Andrew McQualter’s first in charge.
In the votes
Jack Riewoldt wound back the block, booting 5.3 from 15 disposals and eight marks. Most importantly, all eight marks were taken inside forward 50, with the veteran benefiting from excellent ball movement further up the field. Noah Balta was excellent at the other end of the field, keeping Jesse Hogan to 1.1 while having 17 disposals and six intercept marks himself. Tim Taranto was a ball magnet with 36 disposals, while co-captain Toby Nankervis led from the front in an engrossing ruck battle with Giant Kieren Briggs.
Room for improvement
Despite putting 110 points on the board on Sunday, the Tigers struggled in the territory battle, conceding a whopping 70 inside 50s to the Giants. If a team higher up the ladder had 70 inside 50s against Richmond, the result could’ve been much different. Ultimately, Richmond’s efficiency forward of centre (16.14 from 47 entries) ensured it kept ahead on the scoreboard. Elsewhere, Dustin Martin started well with eight disposals in the first term but finished with just 19 and three score involvements for the match while only going at 50 per cent by foot.

POSITIVES & NEGATIVES FOR ROUND 12

The Key Takeaway: Tigers win a close one!
Richmond owned an unenviable record of nine losses and three draws from their last 12 matches decided by a goal or less.
It appeared as though that would increase when the Giants hit the front in the 24th minute of the final term when Giants sub Josh Fahey successfully bombed long.
That sinking feeling returned eight minutes later when ruckman Kieren Briggs conjured a goal out of nothing.
However, the Tigers were able to stand up in the big moments through Dion Prestia and Marlion Pickett to give Andrew McQualter his first win as an AFL coach.
The result has them hovering six points outside the eight and with some semblance of hope.
The Positive: Defence held up strongly
Richmond’s defence was under siege for extended periods on Sunday.
Noah Balta, Nathan Broad, Dylan Grimes, Jayden Short, Tylar Young and co. held up pretty well to barricade the back 50.
The Giants kept coming but the Tigers continued to shut them out, aside from the last quarter.
While the team ended up kicking 16 goals and looked menacing in attack, it was the defence which formed the bedrock of their win.
The Negative: Conceding 70 inside 50s
One the flip side of the positive, the Tigers conceded 70 inside 50s to a side that is now sitting in the bottom four.
Going -23 entries, against any opposition, is not a great sign when you look at it in isolation. Against a team that has won just four games for the season reads even more poorly.
They conceded seven goals in the final term having kept the Giants relatively under wraps for three quarters.
Thankfully, Richmond’s forward line, led by Riewoldt’s five goals, was able to double GWS’ marks inside 50 (18-9) to kick a winning score.
A much tighter overall performance will be necessary if they want to knock off Fremantle in Perth this weekend.

Thought Ward was the best mid on the ground
You would.
-
He was definitely the best Robin.... :shh
-
Apparently we could have had Ward
-
So Kingsley gave no votes to Taranto?
You're assuming Mini gave Taranto 5
They certainly are strange votes

Yep, so many possible combos it's impossible to know.
One possibility:
Jack 5 Balta 5
Taranto 4 Bolton 4
Green 3 Ward 3
Ward 2 Jack 2
Bolton 1 Taranto 1
Another is:
Taranto 5 Ward 5
Jack 4 Bolton 4
Balta 3 Jack 3
Green 2 Balta 2
Bolton 1 Green 1
It all depends on who out of Jack, Taranto, Bolton, Balta and Ward received 5 votes.

We only won because of the umps according to Gerard Healy :facepalm
-------------------
Stopping short of saying both winners were undeserving, Healy suggested that poor umpiring decisions perhaps swung the games in the way of the victors.
“Both winners were on the end of dodgy decisions in the last quarter that fell the right way,” he told SEN’s Sportsday.
Healy explained that Harry Himmelberg was wrongly accused of kicking the ball out on the full, a decision that led to Jack Riewoldt kicking his fifth goal of the game.
He also believes Jesse Hogan didn’t receive a deserved push in the back decision in the final term. Richmond defeated the Giants by just six points.

Agree Damo
With umpiring it is "swings and roundabouts" .
We got that one but didn't get the Whitfield HTB but GWS got HTB against Dan Rioli and not the Hogan one
Happens every week
Gerard obviously needed something to talk about

I was watching Kayo on my phone at the in-laws so didn't see it too closely. At a glance I thought it was OOTF.
