AFL Round 22
St Kilda vs RICHMOND
Sunday, 13th August @ Marvel Stadium.
Start time: 3:20 pm.

Even at Marvel, if we come out again all soft and lethargic, get jumped and lose to the Saints next week then we deserve to finish bottom 4. This is a side that ran out of juice and could only manage one goal after half-time today.
-
If go in with Soldo & Nank again at Marvel and persist with Pickett forward & slugs like Graham we deserve to lose. :shh

Lock this in - Mini Dud is not brave enough to drop anyone other than 1st and 2nd year players.

St Kilda vs Richmond Preview
Andrew Slevison
SEN
10 August 2023
St Kilda meets Richmond at Marvel Stadium on Sunday in a very intriguing affair.
The Saints were pretty good against Carlton last week, at least in the first half, but were run over late. Their form prior was ok, edging out North Melbourne before beating Hawthorn.
The Tigers were demolished by the Western Bulldogs last weekend, going down by 55 points. The week before they were extremely good against Melbourne before being overrun late, which came on the back of a three-game winning run.
There is plenty on the line in this one with the Saints sitting seventh and just two points inside the eight, while the Tigers remain in the finals hunt some six points out of the mix and with their hopes slipping away.
Richmond announced the retirement of Trent Cotchin on Thursday which is something that could stir the emotions. However, the veteran is not playing which has given Saints supporters a sigh of relief given the events of Cotchin’s 300th game.
On that occasion, the Tigers outmuscled the Saints in Round 14, getting up by 20 points in the wet in a great celebration of their three-time premiership captain at the MCG.
But the Tigers own a subpar record at Marvel, losing twice from two attempts at the venue this year, and have not won there in their last seven.
On the flip side, the Saints have won seven from 12 at their home ground this season, however, they have dropped four of their last six there.
Despite a few blips, Ross Lyon’s side is still playing a robust style of footy even if their scoring power has not been quite up to scratch. Andrew McQualter’s Tigers have conceded 351 points from 192 inside 50s across their last three games, so they’ll need to find some defensive strength to ward off the recent fragility.
With Richmond’s apparent inability to play well at Marvel coupled with their shocking display last week, it tips the scales ever so slightly in the favour of the Saints.
They have a little more to play for given they currently occupy a spot in the eight and they’ll be intent on keeping it that way.
Tip: St Kilda by 7 points.

THE TEAMS UNDER THE MOST PRESSURE HEADING INTO ROUND 22
Dwayne Russel
SEN

2 - Richmond
“Richmond I've got at number two, they've lost their past two.
“They were horrible last week. The new coach Andrew McQualter, his honeymoon's over.
“He's coaching for that job, and if they lose their season's over as well.
“I've got Richmond number two because of how much is at stake. Their season is over for if they lose to the Saints.”

This is the same headless chooks start as last week. Stagnant with and without the ball, can't get it past half-way, poor decision making with the ball, and repeatedly turning it over :banghead.
-
Broad is a spud
-
Yep could be another long day. It’s just hard to watch and see what kind of directive mcqualter is giving
-
Ross butchering the ball early. Dusty too :help
-
5mins if not being able to get it past centre wing.
-
The Saints have been kicking shorter than that and not getting told to play on.
-
Fantastic effort from coulthard. Broad gives it away again and another poor decision from vlastuin.
-
Broad just gave away his second goal. Go be with your kid and have a rest dude.
-
Not pretty but we actually got a goal. Dusty rips it out and gets it to Bakes who grubbers a goal :gotigers.
Rich 1.0-6
StK 2.0-12
-
Broad having a Barry :banghead
-
That's 3 goals from Broad. Bloody get him off
Disgraceful
-
Our most solid players in our back line have really
Gone to water this year, broad, grimes, vlastuin
-
Broad having a mare. Half asleep. Has he had enough sleep as a new dad?
-
Whoever gets the coaching get. Can you teach them how to tackle.
-
Should have been an unrealistic attempt before broads holding the ball.
-
The past few weeks have obviously been rough on Broad. He got belted by JUH last week way too easily as well
-
Such a bad lacklustre game. Depressing almost
-
We have become a joke.
Not worth watching
-
How’s that not a mark/ free kick to Bauer?
-
We used to be an excellent defensive team but we are nowhere near it now. It’s embarrassing
-
We're just not switched on again and there's no defensive workrate. Saints players standing by themselves on the wing waiting for the Saints' rebound :banghead.
-
We have become a joke.
Not worth watching
As bad as West Coast the past two weeks :help.
-
We will lose this by 80 points. Saints players just waltzing around unopposed knowing there's no pressure.
Go and enjoy your off season you useless muppets
-
Dow the only one having a go
-
Dows looking pretty good.
-
That's HTB against Wilkie ::).
-
Bauer is no good.
Can't take a mark.
-
Jack leap, mark and goal.
Rich 2.1-13
StK 5.0-30
-
Bauer is no good.
Can't take a mark.
Seriously ? The kid has been competing hard. Our kicks are so atrocious it’s not even funny
-
Thought we controlled the last 10mins. If Broad wasn't on the field we might have been in front :rollin
-
Quarter time
Richmond 2.1-13
St Kilda 5.0-30
Goals: Riewoldt, Baker.
The team needs a good kick up the backside. As pmac said, Dow the only one who looked like the game mattered that whole quarter. Only in the last 5 mins did some of his teammates wake up.
Our inside 50 efficiency is just 28% :help. Saints are just suck punching us on the rebound like Norf used to do to us back in a day.
-
Bauer is no good.
Can't take a mark.
Being blocked in the air and should be rewarded with a free or two.
-
Bauer is no good.
Can't take a mark.
He has been played in defence all year at VFL level. He was only pushed forward late in games to try to get our VFL team across the line. Now in the AFL side he's expected to be a four-quarter full forward again like he was at North Adelaide but at the highest level.
-
Bauer is no good.
Can't take a mark.
Being blocked in the air and should be rewarded with a free or two.
There he goes.
-
Bauer read that high ball best and took the chest mark uncontested 25 out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 3.1-19
StK 5.0-30
-
That was the worst chain of handballs thag will result in a goal that you’ll see. Every single one of them missed the target or gave it to someone under immediate pressure.
-
Shai had to go harder there.
Momentum killer.
-
What was that kick, Prestia? Open clearance should end up long inside 50!
Then we again turn it over going to HF and the Saints hit on the sucker punch again :banghead.
-
How embarrassing :banghead
-
Nice throw!
-
That's what happens when you don't drop senior players and reward them for poor efforts.
-
I’m not sure truck has been that good since his return. We haven’t improved at all defensively
-
Time for a big clean out end of this year.
-
We all could get a kick for St Kilda today.
Just laziness.
-
Broad poor handball on wing. Then poor effort in defense.
They finally miss
-
Never seen so many fumbles, missed kicks, handballs
-
Broad should have absolutely crushed King in that situation. Instead, tiptoes around King and lets him take an uncontested mark.
-
Vlastuin has LOST IT this year.
-
Total change is needed at the club.
Lost the plot.
Feels like dark times ahead.
-
I love how we just bomb it like Lynch is out there
-
Seems since the Melbourne loss we've switched off for the year. I can't see us even beating Norf next week. There's no intensity, system nor thought process out there. Just slow short passing by hand and foot (which is being read by the Saints) or long lazy bombs to St Kilda defenders.
ps. Now Rioli has gone off with an ankle. Probably the same one he has had issue with.
-
We need to invest in a tackling coach. We are the absolute worst team at sticking tackles now.
-
Nice one balta. He should be dropped. Shows he just doesn’t care at all with a play like that
-
Higgins you'll always be a crap kick.
-
Don't stress guys Mcqualter is doing a great job.
He is full of ideas on the bench :lol
-

Totally agree
-
Bauer is no good.
Can't take a mark.
What?
He looks like our only forward who can take a mark.
-
That was a 50 every day of the week.
-
I'm not sure we realize season is or was alive today.
The lack of effort is curious
-
OMG we actually got a goal (Baker)
Rich 4.2-26
StK 9.2-56
-
Every time they go forward they are scoring and have loose players running around free.
-
Schoolboy stuff! You don't allow the long ball over the back on the wing ::).
We are just not caring. Totally unprofessional and no self-pride in at least doing the basics right.
-
Every time they go forward they are scoring and have loose players running around free.
If you know the opposition are playing like morons and are going to turnover the ball all the time, then you can "cheat" forward.
-
Bolton goal.
Rich 5.3-33
StK 10.2-62
-
I’m not sure truck has been that good since his return. We haven’t improved at all defensively
Agree. Other than a handful of games our team defence has been poor. Not all on truck though, every line plays a part in defensive structure.
-
Dow our most dynamic mid
-
Half-time
Richmond 2.1 5.3-33
St Kilda 5.0 10.2-62
Goals: Baker 2, Riewoldt, Bauer, Bolton.
Embarrassing! Worse than last week. At least the Dogs on their day are a decent side. St Kilda are crap whose poor skills get exposed under pressure. Yet they are owning us today because we are making it so easy for them to find wide open targets due to us applying no defensive pressure or intensity without the ball and our lazy delivery and turnovers with it :help.
-
Watch Carlton then watch us.
There's your answer to why we are playing like this.
-
Free kicks :banghead
Our midfield is a large problem. I wouldn't want to be a backline player for us currently.
-
Nice one balta. He should be dropped. Shows he just doesn’t care at all with a play like that
That’s what I was calling for after his performance against Melbourne. That sort of behaviour shouldn’t be tolerated. It’s unacceptable.
If you want to maintain standards you tell him if he quits on the team you can’t play seniors.
But by allowing him to play he can just give up over and over again.
-
I’m not sure truck has been that good since his return. We haven’t improved at all defensively
Agree. Other than a handful of games our team defence has been poor. Not all on truck though, every line plays a part in defensive structure.
We were counting on Tarrant and Gibcus being the keystones in our defence this year just as we were relying on Lynch being our number one key forward target. There was clearly no plan B. We are now relying on two inexperienced rookie picks at each end of the ground.
Also as Dio said, playing both Nank and Soldo at Marvel is just crazy. Two lumbering ruckmen allows the opposition an extra runner at ground level. We look so slow and clueless out there.
-
Our work rate is atrocious.
Are we fit enough?
Or are we just lazy?
Or both?
-

Are we fit enough?

The comeback against Hawthorn would suggest we're fit enough. Today is more laziness and lack of workrate especially defensively. Minds not in the game and belief in the rest of the season and making finals gone.
-
Dan Rioli going back to the future starting the 3rd qtr up forward.
-
How was that not paid high to Broad? ::)
-

Mate I agree , but puzzling after last weeks effort not one senior bloke dropped.
-
Shai just misses too many easy goals. My wife would have kicked that.
-
The disposal is the worst in 10 years easily. We need to get back to basics
-
Open targets repeatedly missed under no physical pressure. Our forward entries are just pathetic! U10s level.
-
Who's number 7.
Murdering us.
-
Every time balta plays on inside D50 he just kicks to an outnumber and how many times is it tiny baker ? HE CANT COMPETE IN THE AIR. WHY DO WE KICK TO HIM OUTNUMBERED DOWN THE LINE. too many dumb players
-
Playing like a team that has mentally checked out and knows there will be a different coach next year .
-
Work rate, fitness, overall pace and options down the line have been our issue since 2020, in particular when Lynch is being beaten or injured.
We don't have the pace we used to, when we were elite pressure every week. Our players are slow and struggle to close down uncontested situations.
We do look like lack fitness but I think teams always look like this when you lose. You end up spending so much energy chasing ball compared to opponents who are winning.
-
Might want to play for their spots on the list if nothing else
-
Talk about playing like headless chooks :facepalm.

Agree with what your saying
I think it’s both.
We are not fit and haven’t been all year.
We are just lazy (mentally exhausted or weak) and we aren’t fit enough to pressure and tackle as much as our previous standards demanded.
A drop in standards infects the whole team. A little leaven will spoil the whole batch.
Our standards are not at the same level
-
Baker to Bauer. Kicks his 2nd.
Rich 6.3-39
StK 11.4-70
-
That was our best play of the day. Pickett to Bolton out of the centre to Baker to Dow on the lead.
Typical of us though to miss gettable set shots :banghead.
40 - 70
-
Frees: 7 - 20 ::)
-
Max King with an absolute gift free kick.
The game is ruined.
-
Seriously, how is that a free kick?
-
Frees: 7 - 20 ::)
You can't win with this statistic every week
-
Mansell subbed on for Soldo.
An admittance they stuffed up at team selection.
-
It is a clear mark to Jack you dopes ::).
-
Mansell subbed on for Soldo.
An admittance they stuffed up at team selection.
Will make all the difference
-
43 points. Only kicked 1 goal that quarter.
Every player should be up for trade to start a rebuild
Sick of watching some of these players.
Thanks for the dynasty but time to move on.
-
3/4 time
Richmond 2.1 5.3 6.5-41
St Kilda 5.0 10.2 13.6-84
Goals: Bauer 2, Baker 2, Riewoldt, Bolton.
This is 2016 low levels :P.
-
2 Ruckman at Marvel again is laughable. Really don't know what they see in Graham honestly. Premiership player sure, form clearly no. The game has past him by along with Macca and Grimes. And don't get me started on Nank...
-
Mansell subbed on for Soldo.
An admittance they stuffed up at team selection.
Will make all the difference
I'm not saying Mansell is the answer lol, but if the coach & match committee stuff up with poor preparation and go into games with the wrong strategy before a ball is even bounced two weeks in row, then no surprise the team fails. McQualter won't be the coach next year based on the past two weeks.
-
Trade Balta and Ross while they have some little value
RIEWOLDT
GRIMES
KMAC
SOLDO
PICKETT
NANK
ALL TIME TO GO.
JACK YOU WILL NOW REMEMBERED AS A TOSSER THAT PLAYED ON WAY TOO LONG. SELFISH.
All the Dow knockers he has been our best mid, that's says something about the rest.
-
This is going to get uglier. Much uglier. Yes 2016 vibes
-
Short to Dow to Taranto = set shot goal.

No offence intended. Just that he is no good. Shouldn't even be on the list
-
JACK YOU WILL NOW REMEMBERED AS A TOSSER THAT PLAYED ON WAY TOO LONG. SELFISH.
Ease up, I know you’re hurting but at least Jack’s trying his guts out, 3 vs 1 nearly every contest.
-
Agree on the others
NANK has been crap all year apart from 1 game.
Where he got reported anyway
We played much better when Ryan was ruck.
Wasting time with Bank SOLDO Grimes jack etc.
Time to make huge changes
-
I don't think Jack's reputation will be hurt by playing this year. We forget that we have been failed by list management. If Jack retired at end of last year who partners Lynch as a KPF? Low and behold Jack retired, Lynch season injury who is our KPF all year? Bradtke and Bauer?
The whole season has been stuffed cause of Lynch injury, which is bad luck but I point the finger at list management that we would have analysed this risk and had no plan for it occuring. Or we didn't cater for it which would be worse.
-
Goal to Broad.
Rich 8.6-54

Funny stuff with Balta up forward trying to get a free like Max King.
Unfortunately he wears the wrong colour jumper so not happening.

Woeful, bruise free and embarrassing!
Almost a 10 goal decline from when we last played them just 8 weeks ago :thumbsdown.

Especially Butler, was always better than Castagna. But they kept the douche and got rid of Butler
-

Butler yes, Higgins definitely not.
Club is much better without him
-
Higgins is useless, but still better than Castagna
-
Higgins is useless, but still better than Castagna
Umm no. At least Jason was a team first player unlike Jack (I want a guarantee I'll be in starting 22 each week) Higgins s
Certainly not as a person
-
It was disappointing we got rid of Butler. We are a mediocre team now. It was poor team selection. We need to play the younger players like Banks, Sonsie, Brown and Ryan from now on.
-
Jack has finished his career the way he started
As a very selfish man
And your posting is like it used to be Non sensical
Jack busted a gut today. Pity some of his team mates didn't.
-
From the selection table to the final siren , the most tactically inept performance I've ever seen from a coach - and considering some of the clowns we've had over the journey that's saying something. Soldo & Nank together, slow players on every line, Soldo up forward, zoning off and not manning up, too many around the ball and not enough on the spread - all the shyte you don't do at Marvel - and he does it two weeks running. Unforgivable. :banghead

Thought your stupidity was mostly just an act at first but it's becoming clearer by the day that you're the genuine article.. :shh
-
So boys and girls bunch of headless chooks where was the effort from last weeks embarrassing game players totally checked out.
-
Pathetic
I seem to have said that alot this year
So much to play for and yet again we didn't show up
The lack of leadership on the field is again a glaring beacon. But why bang on about it? Unless the co- captain's put their hands up to step aside they will likely remain
Noah Balta, yet again they got in his head and his head dropped
The bloke people have anointed as our next captain misses sitter after sitter. And when we needed him to stand up andclead he was like the others MIA
Soldo, just don't get me started.
Only positives were Dow and Bauer. The rest of them played like they have checked out and didn't turn up. It was yet again embarrassing....
They say they want McQualter as coah and they dish up that for him.
Just a wasted season, wasted

No mention of Shorty there - how many votes you giving him this week? :shh

AFL Report Card: Round 22
Ben Waterworth, Ben Cotton, Catherine Healey and David Zita
Foxsports
14 August 2023
RICHMOND
If not previously, you can now put a line through the Tigers’ season after they were well beaten by St Kilda at Marvel Stadium. It continued Richmond’s woes at the venue after also getting blown off it last week by the Western Bulldogs, where most of the damage was also largely done in the opening quarter. The Tigers looked tired and feeling the pinch of a long season including the transition of their senior coach, but will try and salvage something against North Melbourne at the MCG next week.
In the votes
Though Rowan Marshall had the better of him, Toby Nankervis fought bravely with 16 touches, seven tackles and 28 hit-outs. Tim Taranto (24 disposals, seven tackles, one goal) and Jayden Short (26 touches, seven marks) were also two of the Tigers’ best.
Room for improvement
Richmond was always playing catch-up after conceding five goals straight in the first quarter alone. Andrew McQualter’s side never really recovered from that point. They really struggled to contain Max King, who had a season-best six goals, with Noah Balta playing far too loose. At the other end of the ground, Jacob Bauer and Liam Baker were the Tigers’ only multiple goalkickers with two each.

The Key Takeaway: Another passive performance
Richmond surrendered its season to the Western Bulldogs last week.
But not much changed against St Kilda this weekend.
Some players were jogging around Marvel Stadium like they’d lost interest. It was a passive performance which lacked intensity.
It feels like the playing group has shut up shop in the past fortnight which has been disappointing.
Finals are now still mathematical but highly unlikely.
The Negative: Marvel hoodoo continues
Richmond’s standards drop immeasurably at Marvel. It’s quite baffling.
Since former coach Damien Hardwick said he and the club don’t like going to the venue, the Tigers have fallen in a hole under the roof. They have lost seven and drawn one of their last eight there.
It has become a massive problem.
