Brisbane v Richmond Round 1 Preview
Gemma Bastiani
womens.afl
2 September 2023
Richmond got the shock win in round five last season when these two met, but Brisbane claimed victory when it counted most: in finals. Both sides have had some significant list changes in the off-season months, but the memories of those two season seven games will certainly still burn.
On the fast deck of Brighton Homes Arena, the Lions will want to get the ball to their outside runners and move with speed, so it is imperative Richmond force a contested, messy game of footy. Belle Dawes looms as a game changer, with more responsibility in the midfield thanks to Emily Bates' departure and an exceptional record against the Tigers, averaging plus-7.9 disposals and plus-2.7 clearances against them compared to all other clubs.
Tip: Richmond will make life tough, but the Lions have too many weapons. Brisbane by 13 points.

About to start.
-
Like the men's team we failed to protect the defensive side of stoppage at HF then and Brisbane are allowed to waltz to the other end of the ground with ease. Lucky the Lions missed.
0 - 1
-
Jess Hocking's snap misses.
1 - 1
We are kicking into the breeze.
-
Brisbane go coast to coast for a goal.
1 - 7
-
Once again we allow them to get out the front of the stoppage :facepalm.
-
Greisner's shot from the pocket into the breeze goes OOTF.
Brisbane again go coast to coast for a goal. It would great if we didn't allow the ball over the back all the time into an open Lions forward line out-numbered :facepalm.
1 - 13
-
Quarter time
Richmond 0.1-1
Brisbane 2.1-13
Now we'll see how we go kicking with the breeze. Need a better connection between our mids and forwards and not allow the ball out the back defensively.

Poor defending allows a mark to a high ball and gifts them a goal into the breeze. You know the ball is going to drop short into the breeze so as a defender you need to play in front. Schoolkid stuff!
1 - 19
-
Very average 1st qtr
And that's being kind
Only positive was the pressure especially the tackling
Disposal was woeful
Missing Wakefield terribly

Dempsey kicks it over the top which allows Brennan to run onto it and she bounces it through (just) from 50 :gotigers.

Apart from a couple of brainfades that third quarter, we did what we had to do against the breeze. Now we've got to use it in the last and run out the game.

Well done girls. Fought back in the last 5 mins to win.
Only concern is if Conti is injured (?). Whether it's an ankle (she was limping early in the last) or just bad cramp.

Ralphsmith would poo himself playing against these girls

-----------------------------------------------
Caitlin Greiser was the hero in her first game for Richmond, thumping through the match-winning goal from 40m to topple Brisbane by six points at Brighton Homes Arena on Sunday.
In a ripping contest between two top four teams from last season, captain Katie Brennan gave her team a chance by levelling scores inside the final five minutes before Greiser had her moment.
After winning a free kick for pinning Brisbane skipper Bre Koenen holding the ball, the former Saint went back and hammered her set shot post high with the breeze to complete the 6.4 (40) to 5.4 (34) victory.
The Tigers had to withstand 60 nervous seconds at the end with the ball close to the Lions' goal, but they hung on to complete the upset.
Mon Conti (26 disposals, eight clearances and a goal) was magnificent for the victors, helping to turn the tide after Richmond trailed by 18 points during the second term.
The superstar left the field in the dying stages appearing to favour her left ankle.
Grace Egan (20), Ellie McKenzie (15) and Eilish Sheerin (14) were also instrumental, while Brennan's two goals proved crucial.
The Lions were best served by Belle Dawes, who finished with 17 disposals, while League best and fairest Ally Anderson (22) was also prolific.
Brisbane looked at its run-and-gun best in the opening quarter, using the strong breeze to grab a two-goal advantage at the first change, but perhaps didn't cash in as it would have liked.
After some poor entries going forward early in the game, they adjusted, with Charlotte Mullins kicking a goal with her first kick in AFLW and Taylor Smith adding another minutes later.
Dakota Davidson kicked truly from a contested mark early in the second term to give the hosts an 18-point lead, but that's when Richmond bit back. Hard.
Captain Brennan started the revival with a superb running goal from 45m before superstar Conti continued the resurgence with a magnificent one-on-one win over Phoebe Monahan and skilful checkside finish from close range.
When Emelia Yassir and Courtney Jones kicked goals before half-time, Richmond had kicked four on the trot and carried a six-point lead to the main break.
The game was stuck between the 50m arcs in the third quarter and it took a terrific Sophie Conway set shot from the left hand boundary line to level the scores at the final change and set up a grandstand finish.
Did you see that?
In her first AFLW game, things could not have started better for young Lion Charlotte Mullins, who kicked a goal with her first touch in the big time. After being drafted prior to season seven, Mullins sat out to complete her final year of school, but wasted no time in making her mark on debut. After taking a mark at the top of the goalsquare from a cleverly centred Orla O'Dwyer kick, Mullins went back and slotted the goal, much to the excitement of her teammates.
The moment
With her team trailing by a goal and less than five minutes remaining, it took a piece of Katie Brennan brilliance to keep the door ajar for the Tigers. With Ellie McKenzie able to step around Ally Anderson and kick the ball long inside 50, Brennan was able to outwork reliable Lion Nat Grider to take a contested mark near the top of the goalsquare. Her resulting goal levelled the scores before Caitlin Greiser was able to finish the job moments later.
Up next
Richmond has just a five day turnaround to prepare for a bumper Friday night clash against Adelaide at Ikon Park, while the Lions travel to South Australia to take on Port Adelaide at Alberton Oval on Saturday afternoon.

God political correctness has gone off the scale. It really is hard enough to watch mens games nowdays yet alone watching a load of wanna be shiela's playing their unskilled slow crap.
Nothing against the girls here but its god awful to watch. I for one will not be watching them again for another big chunk of years.
Before all those fools with daughters get on their high horse yes i too would support my daughter if she played and it would be great she played but lets call it what it is. A very lo standard and hard to watch.

But you did watch it, right? And you'll watch it again, just to reassure yourself that you were right. Every time you watch it you will come in here moaning about how poor it is ... so now we will all expect plenty of moaning from you, as is usual.
But if the girls were any better you wouldn't have anything to complain about ... :rollin

You're right.
I know they'll never have the same physiques as the men but some of them were too big in the wrong spots, clearly.
I'm no expert on ladies fitness but yeah it looked that way.

The girls game is a little like 90’s styles footy so you’re going to see more positional play and it pays high dividends to have a Lockett type up forward near the goalsquare.
But your mids and wingers will be super fit.
It’s best not compare it to the blokes game at all. Just take it for what it is and you’ll enjoy it more.
The W league is getting better with every year and I have really enjoyed the progression I’ve seen each year.
The girls are awesome and I’m expecting a really great year from our team. We have some real weapons on every line.
-
Fantastic win from the girls. I think it will help instill a heap of confidence in what they are going can achieve this season. It looks as though we’ve really built a strong team on every line. Our midfield is super strong with Seymour, Conti, Egan and McKenzie. Our defence is super strong with Miller, Sheerin, Mclelland, Graham, Lynch and I really like Cox in defence too I think she’s going to be great asset this year especially with her skill by foot.Dempsey had some real impressive passages off half back and wing and I can see her having a great season ahead as she looks super fit.
Up forward we have found some more avenues than just Brennan/Wakefield. Greiser looks to be an excellent replacement for Wakefield and it looks as though Jones is going to be a great addition for us too.
I like the fact that Conti will be spending some rest time up forward as she’s unstoppable and oozes class in everything she does.
Our pressure was pretty good after that first quarter domination from the lions but after we increased pressure we got on top. Our clearance work looks to have improved with the stacked quality mids and will only improve when Sarah Hosking hopefully returns next week.
McDonald seems to have improved and she’s absolutely fearless. Reid also looks to have improved on her already impressive improvement from late last season.
Only Poppy Kelly our only real worry as she doesn’t seem to have improved in any way. I’d rather see how Pearce goes so we can have a decent replacement so Gabby Seymour can have a decent rest.
A little bit rusty early on but once we got our game going we looked to be the better team for most of the game. The signs looks really positive for us and we just beat the grand final team on their home deck. This is a great start and I’m very excited about the season ahead.
-
Agree your comments around Poppy Kelly. I too was disappointed
I was hoping with a full pre-season and no injuries she'd dominate when she went into the ruck but she didn't. It was the opposite really. She gave a couple of really silly frees.
We need someone who can give Gsbby Seymour a decent chop out as well as if need be release Gabby to go forward or back
-

Have you seen Pearce? Surely she’s better than Kelly?
And how did you like Cox’ game?

And how did you like Cox’ game?
I'm a huge Cox fan. She showed last year she has great courage, never shirks a contest and sometimes although she plays against bigger stronger girls she hates being beaten. And I love that
Needs to clean up her disposal because at times it us heart in the mouth stuff but it will cone in time. She's only 13 games into her career

The Tigers' forward line can stand up without Wakefield
A few adjustments were required in Richmond's forward line over the off-season with the retirement of All-Australian Courtney Wakefield, but it all came together in the Tigers' narrow win over Brisbane. Captain Katie Brennan stood up with two goals, while Emelia Yassir and Monique Conti each hit the scoreboard. But it was new recruits Courtney Jones and Caitlin Greiser who helped to carry the load in attack, each kicking a goal in their Tigers debut and having a real presence throughout the game. They will only further develop their chemistry as the season wears on, but they're already starting in a strong position.

The first round of the 2023 NAB AFLW season saw interchange caps introduced for the first time.
Sitting at a limit of 60 – with a free kick and a 50m penalty to be paid if that cap is exceeded – teams had to think hard about how often they swung changes.
Interchanges made between quarters do not count towards the tally of 60.
... much more established sides in Brisbane and Adelaide made plenty of [inter]changes, sitting at 57, with Richmond topping the pack at 58 – Mon Conti's final-minute interchange with calf cramp pushing the Tigers to first spot.
