Cumberland started in the centre.
-
Gave away a soft 50 to allow Werribee to clear. Then terrible defending for a high kick to the hot spot. 3 up yet all missed the ball and we allow a chest mark :facepalm.
0 - 6
-
Samson held 25 out yet no free.
And then another 50 given away by us in our forward half. So that's both Werribee goals resulting from 50s.
0 - 12
-
After not being able to get it out of our back half for ages, we finally get a forward entry and Cumberland gets the free 30 out. Misses a gettable one.
1 - 13
-
Poor kick by Werribee gives the turnover to Olden who chips to Davidson 50 out. Gets to the goalsquare for a ball-up. Rushed through.
2 - 13
-
Davidson to the goalsquare and rushed by Werribee again.
We get it back and Davidson has another go from 45. Misses.

Shocking kick across D50 by Feneley gifts Werribee a goal.

VFL Tigers fall to Werribee
By Zakariya El-Houli
Richmond Media
14 April 2024
The VFL Tigers fell to Werribee at the Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday afternoon by 21 points.
The reigning grand finalists hosted the Tigers on their home deck as both sides entered Round 3 undefeated from their first two games.
In the opening term, the hosts would hold the Tigers goalless.
Despite strong defensive work from Tom Brindley, Kaleb Smith, Chad Harris, Nick Guiney and Mutaz El Nour to repel entries, Werribee went into quarter time with a 22-point lead.
In the second term, tall forward Archie May got Richmond underway with their first goal of the afternoon, shortly followed by Sam Banks.
Unlike the first term, the Tigers started to get scoreboard nourishment.
A positive for the Tigers in the opening half was debutant Sam Davidson, who was lively in the forward half and had multiple looks at goal, despite getting no reward on the scoreboard.
A 26-point margin separated the two sides going into the main break.
Richmond managed 39 tackles in the first half and dominated hit-outs via the AFL-listed ruck duo of Samson Ryan and Sam Naismith, however, Werribee were winning the clearance game, and had control of the football.
In the third quarter, it took 14 minutes for either team to register a score. The Tigers were repelling Werribee’s entries and had turned the game into an arm-wrestle.
The first goal of the half came from Judson Clarke, with Samson Ryan soon converting from outside-50 for his second major, and Richmond’s second in a row.
The Tigers established dominance in the third term; however, their work would be undone late as Werribee scored back-to-back goals to extend their lead back out to 26 going into the final term.
It wasn’t for a lack of effort however, as the Tigers were up to 56 tackles for the game.
In the final term, the Tigers cut the margin down to 15 through Samson Ryan’s back-to-back majors.
He made it four goals for the afternoon and got his side within striking range of the hosts.
However, Werribee went on to kick their only major of the quarter late, and seal the game shut.
The Tigers, who were minus eight in clearances and minus 15 in inside-50’s, fought until the very end and walked away from the Avalon Airport Oval having just one less scoring shot.=
Richmond will now head into their bye with a 2-1 record.
They’ll look ahead to their Anzac Day Eve clash against Casey in Round 5 at the Swinburne Centre on April 24.
Werribee 4.2 8.4 10.5 11.7 (73)
Richmond 0.4 3.8 5.9 7.10 (52)
Goalkickers: Ryan (4), May, Clarke, Banks
Best: Naismith, Ryan, Wilson, Bravo, Banks, Smith, El Nour

VFL Report: Round 3
Richmond VFL coach Steve Morris provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in last Saturday's Round 3 loss against Werribee at Avalon Airport Oval.
Sam Banks (17 disposals, 71% disposal efficiency, four marks, three inside-50s, three rebound-50s, one goal)
“Sam played across half-back and on the wing and I thought he was a player that looked like he could break the game open for us at different stages. He tried his hardest and his leadership was something that really stood out to me.”
Kaleb Smith (17 disposals, 82% disposal efficiency, four marks, four tackles, three inside-50s, three rebound-50s)
“Kaleb had another game that was a step in the right direction for him. I thought he was important giving us some really good looks late in the game when we needed to take a few risks, and his ball use was good under pressure late in the game.”
Sam Naismith (15 disposals, 38 hit-outs, 12 contested possessions, 11 clearances, five inside-50s, four tackles)
“I thought Sam was good in the ruck. Once again, he got his hands to the ball consistently throughout the day, we probably just weren't able to make the most of his ruck dominance. This week we'll spend some time working out a plan to make the most of him moving forward.”
Samson Ryan (13 disposals, eight contested possessions, 17 hit-outs, four clearances, seven marks, three contested marks, four goals)
“I thought Samson was the dominant player on the ground for us. He took three contested marks and made the most of his opportunities. He's in good form and it's pleasing to see the way he has responded.”
Noah Cumberland (13 disposals, seven contested possessions, three marks, eight inside-50s)
“I thought ‘Cumbo’ looked lively, we just didn't get the most out of the opportunities that he had. He didn't use the ball as well as we know he can, and we know that he can have a much bigger impact on the game than he did on the weekend.”
Matthew Coulthard (seven disposals, two marks)
“He was just one of a host of small forwards who struggled to get into the game on the day. I thought he tried hard, and his work rate was up, as is always the case.”
Judson Clarke (two disposals, one goal)
“Absolutely shattered for Judson. He’s one of the most likeable people that you'd find in football, and unfortunately, he's gone down with a season-ending ACL injury. We wish Judson all the very best in his recovery and sending over lots of love his way.”
