OHB starting ruck.
Maurice starting in the centre.
-
Ball up 25 out. OHB grabs it out of the ruck and his snap hits the post.
We get it back from the kick-in and Hotton ends up with it 40 out. Misses left.

Goal to the Bullants.

-
Throw-in F50 and it gets out to McKenzie who goals :gotigers.
We then stupidly give away a free post-goal which gifts the Bullants possession at the centre circle followed by 50 gifting them a goal :scream

Shocking game of footy so far.
Lots of mistakes and missed targets.
Hotton a couple of nice things so far

Raso finds Wilson on 50 before the siren. Set shot just gets to the line but misses.

Shocking game of footy so far.

Hotton a couple of nice things so far
We are such a lazy selfish "team" the last two weeks. First 10 mins was too easy because the Bullants were playing like a Div 3 Ammo side. We waltzed through them. As a result, we started disrespecting our opponents getting too casual and doing low % crap. Embarrassing last 20 mins being outworked and outscored by the winless bottom side that gets thumped most weeks :facepalm.

What's with these blind sideways long handballs to no one? :huh3
-
Guiney was down for while. Trainers helped him off with some leg injury (knee/ankle?)
-
Woeful! Again basic skill error (Young). Then we're ballwatching and isolated as the Bullants wanted it more. Goal to them.
34 - 20
-
Tom Sims an almost game, getting to the contest but can't hold onto it.
Being out pressured.
Entry in forward 50 very poor but we kick one there luckily
-
We get the centre clearance and quick reply via Raso :gotigers.

Again out of the centre. Bauer marks. However, he misses the gettable shot.

Smith to Wilson by the boundary near 50. Passes off to Hotton just inside 50 but further inboard. Misses.
42 - 20
-
Guiney back on the ground.
-
El Nour probably deserves an AFL shot.
Smith & Trezise are both non AFL standard pretty clearly.
It's amazing were going this well really with a cobbled together list.
-
We run it through the corridor. However, Raso misses a sitter on his non-dominant left.
43 - 23
-
Wilson is one of the few working his guts out today. Problem is most of his teammates just stand around and ballwatch so the Bullants get out of trouble.
43 - 24

Half time.
43-24. Almost unwatchable at times.
-
Smith & Trezise are both non AFL standard pretty clearly.
Agree. This is their level and even then they are pretty average.
-
Half time.
43-24. Almost unwatchable at times.
There's no connection between our mids and forwards. We have mids streaming through the centre and their kick inside 50s hits no one. When a 5 ft-nothing Wilson is our most effective lead-up forward, there's something wrong.
As for our workrate (of lack of). Trezise being easily bumped off a loose ball inside D50 by a more desperate Bullant followed one minute later by a 15m kick that missed the target by 5m sums up the first half. It's not about talent; it's about attitude and standards. A really poor sub-standard first half by us. We're only in front because we're playing the bottom side who haven't made us pay for our laziness.

Best 3 for mine from our AFL-listers:
OHB .... dominated ruck and clearances.
Hotton ..... a clear class above.
Young ..... ended up doing it at both end. Intercepting down back and pushing forward to kick 2 goals.
-
Looking forward to seeing Lalor, Hotten and Gibcus in the seniors in about 3-4 weeks time.
Sammy and Taj next week followed by Gibby.
Hopefully Smillie gets a crack in the last month.

OHB has improved markedly this year at VFL level so I'm not knocking him here and we will have no other choice to play him in the seniors if heaven forbid Nank gets injured. OHB would be ok contesting in the ruck duels but at this stage I still think he would get exposed around the ground on the spread by a quality AFL ruckman. OHB also is a ruckman-only right now. He is tried as a resting ruck up forward at VFL level, but he hasn't shown any impact yet. Today was one out of the box where he was clear BOG and deserves praise for it, but it should be noted the opposition is the poorest in the VFL.
-
1 goal 3 behinds and 25 touches for Hotton…
No use staying in the vfl imo. Bring him in for literally anyone
Sorry can't agree
Yes he was great today and he is clearly too good at VFL level. As I said last week after watching him live, we've got an absolute gem here.
But he's played basically 5 quarters of footy in 12 months. There is a huge gap between VFL and AFL and solely based on that I'd give at least 1 possibly 2 more full games in the VFL to get the conditioning he needs to play full AFL games
When he debuts I want him to be in the starting 22, not the bloody sub.
For me the wait will be worth it :thumbsup
-
Extra cautious bringing him into the VFL side. Has now played 2 games. Seniors are stuffing atrocious.
Bring him in and manage his minutes.

Richmond VFL power past Bullants
By Connor Burns
RFC website
28 June 2025
After a scrappy first three quarters, Richmond’s VFL side kicked five final quarter goals to run away with a big win against the Northern Bullants on Saturday.
It was the Tigers who started hot, kicking the first three goals just 10 minutes into the game, as signs looked ominous early for the Bullants.
But in the later parts of the quarter the home side fought back, thanks to Will Elliott who kicked back-to-back to steady his side and keep them within 14 points at the first break.
The second quarter proved to be quite an even contest, with Richmond once again kicking early goals through Harry Scott and Massimo Raso, before the Bullants threw a few punches of their own.
But despite having good opportunities to score, they squandered their chances, kicking 1.6 to the Tigers' 2.3 for the term.
This meant Richmond was able to slightly extend its advantage, taking a 19-point lead into the main break.
Tigers key-defender Tylar Young floated forward to kick a brilliant running goal from outside 50 to start the second half, before Oliver Hayes-Brown and Sam Toner got in on the act, the latter’s first ever VFL goal coming with a classy set shot effort.
In a strong quarter for Richmond, it was able to keep its opposition scoreless, helping extend the margin to 40 points with a quarter to play.
It was party time in the last term for the young Tigers and their fans, as Young kicked his second before highly touted draftee Taj Hotton and Seth Macdonald kicked their first goals in the yellow and black.
They managed to kick a few more goals late as Richmond ran out 58-point winners in an important victory.
Lachlan Street showed why he is one of the first players picked in Jake Batchelor’s side, with his 29 disposals and five clearances setting the tone for the team.
Hayes-Brown produced one of his best games to date, finishing a fantastic outing with 26 disposals, 36 hit-outs, 10 clearances and a goal.
Hotton also excelled in his second game back from an ACL injury, showing his speed, class and evasiveness to finish with 25 disposals, nine score involvements and a goal.
The Tigers will next meet Geelong’s VFL side next Sunday afternoon at GMHBA Stadium, looking to make it two wins on the trot.

That’s crazy talk.
Not like he can’t get injured playing 2s
We can manage his minutes in the seniors anyway. Even sub him off if he gets gassed.
Not sure I said anything about getting injured. Think Juddy Clarke shows players can get injured in the VFL
Simply talked about getting the necessary conditioning for AFL
Not disputing they could manage his minutes in the AFL.
But I'd hate the managing minutes means he starts as sub, which is a distinct scenario if they were to bring him in next week. And didn't that go down a treat last week with Alger.
I get I'm most likely the only person who thinks he needs another week in the VFL and I'll wear that. It's just my take/opinion
-
Rioli played in the mid?
Kozzie and Bauer are surely 100% delisted this year unfortunately for them.
Be funny if Young turned out to be a half decent forward option haha.
So, Hotton played 3 quarters over 4? I'd give him a full game in the VFL before bringing him in. Just my 2c. We already have Lalor coming back next week.
-
I just don’t see what vfl gives him that afl can’t. Manage his minutes either way, gets conditioning either way. Btw he would be super fit right now. Probably more fit than most of our players.
They probably won’t bring him in, but delaying it 1 week is useless imo. Doesn’t matter in the big picture anyway though

Lower intensity, but we can give him the minutes I suppose. Also less likely to get smashed around.
This board is very split between 'get him in now' vs 'Serpell rushed him back'.
It's like the moment they play 2-3 quarters of VFL everyone reckons the draftees are fit as a fiddle.

Player by player VFL report: Round 14
Richmond's VFL side secured a comprehensive 58-point win against the Northern Bullants last Saturday afternoon at Genis Steel Oval. Here’s how coach Jake Batchelor assessed the performance of each player.
Oliver Hayes-Brown (26 disposals, 36 hit-outs, 10 clearances, one goal)
“Best on ground, he competed really strongly in the ruck and got his hands on the ball. He gave his mids first use and his follow-up work was really strong, the best performance he has put together.”
Taj Hotton (25 disposals, nine score involvements, four marks, one goal)
“Another progressive game for Taj, could’ve been outstanding if his kicking boots were on. He knows when to stay around the ball, he knows when to leave forward and still had some defensive intent. He’s going to be a hell of a player.”
James Trezise (22 disposals, six marks, four tackles)
“Was really clean with the ball in hand, he stepped through tackles which he always does. Still working on decisions when to go and impact the ball versus when to stay back and defend his man. However, it was a positive step for him.”
Tylar Young (21 disposals, 10 marks, two goals)
“Best game for the year so far, his intercepting of the ball and his staying up on his opponent in defence (was good), and somehow he managed to kick two goals as well which was outstanding.”
Kaleb Smith (19 disposals, seven marks, one tackle)
“Showed some good moments with ball in hand, stepped through tackles and took us forward on our fast plays well, where he showed his speed and agility. When he thinks less with ball in hand, he makes really good decisions for us and showed some strong defensive patterns as well.”
Maurice Rioli (19 disposals, eight tackles, four clearances, one goal)
“His burst, his power and speed around the ball was extremely noticeable, a great centre bounce goal to cap that off.”
Jacob Koschitzke (10 disposals, six marks, five intercept possessions)
“Didn’t get much lick of the ice cream, I think Mutaz and Youngy stole half of his marks, but he blocked out well. His aerial strength and power was strong and his leadership no doubt once again was really strong.”
Jacob Bauer (eight disposals, five marks, one goal)
“Could’ve been a really strong game if he had his kicking boots on, four contested marks is his best return for a while. It was great to see him get on the board at the end and after some really strong showings, so it was a good step forward.”
Tom Sims (seven disposals, six marks, six hit-outs, one goal)
“First game back at the VFL level for a while, didn’t stuff the stats sheet. He competed really strong in the air and knew that it was going to be four quarters of tough football where he had to just keep turning up and play as a big presence. He did that so it was good to see him get through.”
