Title: Joel and the homeless
Post by: mightytiges on October 31, 2006, 01:20:50 PM
I only just caught a glimpse of this on the Noon 3aw news so I might have the details not quite right but they had Joel talking about arrving home after meeting the homeless. He said he just shut door behind him and stood there for half an hour realising how lucky he was and being concerned where the people he had just met would be sleeping that night. He called it scandalous that they slept out the front of the Casino because it is at least warm.

Apparently the AFLPA have organised something for the homeless but I didn't hear exactly what it was. I think it was more accomodation.

The AFL Players' Association has joined forces with the AFL and the Victorian Government to launch a new project aimed at helping homeless youth in inner-suburban Melbourne.

The $6 million initiative announced on Tuesday by Essendon's Mark Bolton, Richmond's Joel Bowden, AFL general manager of marketing and communications Colin McLeod and Victorian Housing Minister Candy Broad, will see a residential home constructed that will provide a base for several programs designed to improve the prospects of homeless youth in Victoria.

* Worked with the Salvation Army to address the needs for the homeless and in particular youth (15-25 year olds). Best way to hep was to offer a house.

* AFLPA/AFL approached the government.

* Every Wednesday would spend time helping the homeless youth who were very receptive to him and those that helped.

* Initially a 5 year plan. Hopes it's sustainable and they can build more homes. First one is in the inner city. Probably a renovated existing Government property but the Government also has land available to build a new house.

* We as footballers come from a privileged position and are put up on a pedestal. Joel doesn't wear his Richmond gear when he travels around. Some recognise him.

* Unfortunately Chubba won't be there next year and we'll miss him but that's part of footy.
