An excellent draft for us. Cotchin and Rance. There I was marking them off from the Herald Sun guide, I realised Rance was left, waiting for us to call his name, what were they doing, trying to give heart attacks or something. Finally we have a player who can develop real well in a key defence post going forward. Whatever happens at 51 is ok now. We got 2 super players and as Ive always said, I give credit where its due, we had some luck but they called the right names. A super effort. 10 out 10 from me. There is hope people for the future people. Big day today for the RFC :clapping

2007 AFL Draft Prospect: Alex Rance
September 4th 2007 14:19
Name: Alex Rance
Height: 194
Weight: 87
State: Western Australia
Club(s): Swan Districts FC
AFL Positions:
Rance is a big defender who can run and use the ball well. He should develop into the most important defender on his AFL team.
Perfect Fit For:
Firrito is sometimes undersized at full back so the addition of another tall defender could help the Kangaroos. Rance may not last to their pick.
AFLinsider.net prediction:
The Bulldogs could use their first round pick to take Rance. For more than a decade, they have needed height. Rance, Williams and Everitt would be a great trio of young defenders. A lot of the teams with early picks need someone like Rance, so he could be a possibility to go at pick 2, but when the Bulldogs are up at pick 5 and if Rance is still there it would be difficult for the Bulldogs to say no.
AFL Fantasy Outlook:
If he goes in the early picks, Rance will probably be on a team that needs help right away, so he should play a lot. He is strong in the air, with good anticipation of where the ball is going, so he can get plenty of marks from opposition kicks. When Rance uses the ball he kicks it long and accurately. Rance should be a player who starts the fantasy season on many teams as a defender on the bench.

202 cm sounds good.
-
Dean Putt
November 9th, 2007
Dean Putt – Calder Cannons
Ht: 202cm Wt: 90kg
Junior position – ruck
AFL position – ruck
Tall athletic ruckman who can push forward and take a mark. Is a left footer and his kicking is pretty good without being outstanding. Had some games where he had a heap of hit outs but others where he didn’t fire at all. Doesn’t always do a lot around the ground but he is very agile for a big man and his pace is good. Proved to be very dangerous up forward in a number of games.
Strengths: Pace and agility; Ability to push forward and kick goals; Marking
Weaknesses: Doesn’t always work hard enough around the ground; Should win more hit outs than he does; Kicking can be dodgy at times as far as hitting targets goes.
Question marks: Is he able to find something and improve his around the ground work?
Draft Prediction: Pick 30 plus. Someone will take him and hope he can find a few gears around the ground. His ability to take a big mark up forward makes him attractive.
Stats: Averaged 14 possessions and kicked 23 goals in 18 regular season games. Averaged 10 hit outs in those games.

I agree should have used the last pick on Gourdis as insurance for Hughes and Riewoldt. Anyway outstanding first 2 picks and a needs selection at 51. Excellent overall.
-
ARGH! Gourdis was still available. :( :( :(
WOuldve topped off a ripper day.

In the PSD Bellchambers > Richards
please GM please :pray :pray :pray :pray :pray :pray :pray :pray

Overall a very good draft although was surprised we passed on at 64.
The future is looking brighter. Good luck to the 3 of them heres to a premiership medallion around their necks for the Tigers in the future. :thumbsup
-
why did we pass on gourdis, big wraps on him ???
but then again, everyone passed on him so maybe there is something not right with himIn the PSD Bellchambers > Richards
please GM please :pray :pray :pray :pray :pray :pray :pray :pray
why could we just get him with or last pick and pass on the psd?
???

Me no understand 'no one picked up Bellchambers' - Not that I know much anyway, but what I have read around the traps would be a better option than Richards. ???
-
Please pick Gourdis or Bellchambers with pick 1 PSD Tiges.
For the future. :pray :pray :pray :pray :pray
-
WTF, how did Gourdis not get picked, must be some huge ??? on him. IMHO and those of many others is that he is the best key forward in the draft :P
anyway options a plenty in the PSD
gaertner, bellchambers, gourdis, collard, pfeiffer but please no richards
If we snared gourdis in the PSD and one of the others in the rookie i'd be ABSOLUTELY STOKED :gotigers
-
Everybody take a deep breath! - we have first PSd pick, plenty of time now to study the leftovers.
-

Just read elsewhere some talk that he can't kick. Personally I don't know much about him.

We're in a great position. Well done to Greg and co. Got everyone that most ppl wanted so there should be no bagging in years to come ;D

alot of supposed big name juniors missed out, we may be able to get a decent player/s in the PSD and rookie draft.

nothing wrong with his kicking IMHO, most be something off-field

If you want to know what the long delay was before pick 18, this would be my guess:
Francis Jackson told us that of the players expected to be taken between 2-17 his favorite of them was Selwood.
He even called him his 'lovechild' but lamented that he wouldn't be around @ 19.
Well guess what...he was! The thing that pains me is he would have been ours IF we didn't trade away for McMahon :banghead
Im happy with our 3 selections, but adding Selwood in would have made me overjoyed.
-
How does this sound?
"Putt taps the ball down to Foley who is tackled and gets the quick handpass away to Cotchin who breaks the pack has a run and kicks a low accurate pass to Deledio on the lead 35 out directly in front. Goal in the first 10 seconds!!!"
;D
EDIT: Taken from the call of the 2011 AFL Grand Final BTW. God I love my time machine.

Tigerliscious except it should read like this
Putt beats Kruezer in the ruck ball down to Foley on to Cotchin who leaves Judd in his wake and kicks a low accurate pass to Deledio on the lead 35 metres out. :thumbsup
2011 Grand Final sounds like a great time frame RROFO

hard to be unhappy with what we selected. im really happy but i was thinking exactly what u just said.
i wonder if miller and co would be thinking about it too. i guess time will tell
sellwood will be a gun. will mcmahon?

Sorry, but Kruezer didn't make it and was delisted in 2010, BIG disappointment. Judd was never the same player without Cousins and Kerr. As consolation Carlton have the priority pick in the 2011 draft but have lost Murphy and Gibbs to other clubs.

Just happy the club didn't try to be too clever and addressed our needs while getting the best available kid at each pick.
Cotchin (midfielder)
Rance (KP defender)
Putt (ruckman/key forward)
:thumbsup
-
Is it enough for Richmond though? For the 2005 season we had 12 new players; 2006 we had 8 new players; 2007 we had 9 new players and this coming season we have 5 so far. Quality rather than quantity?
-
Quality rather than quantity?
Umm....Guy Richards still yet to come Julz ;D
Seriously we have the PSD then 4 rookie selections still yet to come. So it'll be 10 newbies. If Howat is re-rookieed then 9. Today has been about quality over quantity.
Well done Francis Jackson, Miller and Terry btw. I'm still in shock but very happy Terry has drafted big. Not the usual Wallace draft of the past.
-
Thanks for clearing that up MT. Will we get Guy Richards? Do we need to now that we have Putt?
-
Putt and Graham are still very young. Big job for a young boy if we lose Simmo again.
-

i'd rather give that opportunity to a young kid like Putt or Graham instead of a proven hack

Putt won't do anything for a while, no 1st year rucks do. Graham still very raw as well. Given we've gone for Putt, and will most likely pick up Richards, makes it a bit strange that we promoted Graham.
-
Its almost like a fear selection if we get Richards in pre season draft. After all we have Putt who we will develop then you have Patto who came on in leaps in and bounds last year we promoted Graham and if we get Richards too much is too much let alone Ric hards is a proven injury prone player. We'd be alot better off looking at a 19 yo who was not selected today and rookie them. Otherwise the draft for us was a real success.

Like Gourdis.
Unless there's a knock on him we aren't aware of :-\

i think picking up putt has all but assured richards wont be at put road next year.
im convinced of it now. we dont need his injury prone rent knobel type in this team no more.
go youth.

Cotchin and Lids are very different.
Lids is a power player. He excites you with his ability to blast away from packs, fly for marks, carry the ball and bounce and kick 60. You never blink and miss Lids he demands your eyes. Lids is fuelled by Nitro and is a destroyer. He is a bottle of bourbon washed down with a bottle of scotch. He is a machette.
Cotchin is all science and tricks and dinks and class. He is cheeky and elusive. A pickpocket. He is more a magician who uses slight of hand - "what the, did I miss something?". He won't blast away from anyone, he won't get a crowd up on their feet roaring - he'll have people in the stands turning to each other giving knowing nods with a sly smile on their face - "you see that?" they'll say. Cotchin is about vision and smarts and reading of the play. Cotchin is a fine red wine and cheese. He is a razor sharp stiletto to the ribs.
here's weaver's comparison of lids and cotch, very interesting read

Agree jezza.
I think the Club will see Richards as a fill-in while our young rucks develop so drafting Putt doesn't necessarily mean Richards is off our radar IMO. Similarly we may rookie Silvester as a ready-made key defender while Rance finds his feet.
-
i'm not saying putt will do well if thrown in the deep end but i'd much rather let him learn from his experiences then give it to a known hack. Collingwood hardly had the best ruck stocks so to ditch richards must say something about his ability

Richards played the season 2006 out pretty well injury free. Silvester is a known quantity with 3 other development players rookied should make it a very sound list - The best for years IMHO
-
the club is very pleased with its work today
cotch aside
rance was never expected to last. He is the KP we have been looking for, strong and skillful, a competitive beast coming from a superbly grounded football family, tested eerily similarly to a young darren glass, not saying will be as good, but has the same tools and similar competitive edge. The 6 minute debate at the trade table was about selwood vs rance. Rance won .
Putt is eciting athletic talent. Lightning quick and tremenous endurance, kicked 8 goals in a game for calder this year, was a real consideration at pick 18, at 203 cm, good develop as a power forward, will be a nightmare if he fills out and gets a little nastier.
Gourdis, Collard and rance will fly to together from perth to melbourne on monday, the former 2 both vying for psd and rookie spot calculations.
the list has been as balanced in 5 years, things are genuinly looking up.
Exciting timesz
-
blaisee does that mean we are considering collard or gourdis at no. 1 in the PSD

Almost balanced in terms of types of players. Next year's trade-draft period should do it in time with the start of Plough's 5th year (provided he gets a 5th year of course). Age wise it is still unbalanced - 24 players on our list U23. The cubs of course still need to mature and develop over time as individuals and as a team.

How your club fared
November 25, 2007 | The Age
Richmond
No. 2 TRENT COTCHIN
(Northern Knights) 17yo, 185cm, 79.5kg
Well balanced, creative player with rare kicking skills on both sides of his body. Great ball-winner who is good overhead and around goal. Vic Metro U18 representative and AIS/AFL Academy graduate. From Essendon Grammar.
“We’re genuinely excited about having Trent in the club, he’s a 17-year-old that’s very, very capable and I expect him to have a big impact over the course of a long career at Richmond.” Francis Jackson, recruiting manager.
No. 18 ALEX RANCE
(Swan Districts) 18yo, 192cm, 88kg
Hard-running player who provided WA U18s with great rebound from defence in their championship-winning team, winning All-Australian honours.
“We were delighted that Alex was there. He fits our needs of a tall, strong-bodied defender and he was outstanding in the national carnival this year.”
No. 51 DEAN PUTT
(Calder Cannons) 18yo, 202.5cm, 90kg
Athletic tall with good speed and endurance, highlighted by a 2.93s test for 20m and a 14.1 beep test.
“He’s a six-foot-eight ruckman who had a really good second half of the year playing as a forward and we think there’s a lot of development in Dean.”
WHAT THE CLUB SAYS:
“We’re excited to have a combination of a midfielder, a strongbodied defender and a developing ruckman. It was very positive. There are always a few surprises that pop up but I think it went pretty much to plan at fi rst round.” Francis Jackson.
EMMA QUAYLE SAYS:
In Cotchin, the Tigers may very easily have grabbed the best player in this draft. He’ll play some footy next year, and add some class to the midfi eld. They got a key back in Rance by accident — despite being linked to every club from pick five, he was somehow available at pick 18 (Richmond’s priority pick). Dean Putt is a good get too, he came on late in the year but was one of the better ruck/forward line prospects going around. The Tigers are probably on par with Melbourne and Essendon for the best-performed club.

blaisee does that mean we are considering collard or gourdis at no. 1 in the PSD
amongst others, yes, they are right in the mix
-
Blaisee can you tell us what the primary knock on Gourdis was ie. In terms of why every club bypassed him yesterday?

more of an athlete playing football
they say his kicking is not as clean as it should be.
He was good enough to play as key forward for the wa team, and the consensus is that key forwards can be made key defenders, but noth the other way around.
Kicking is not shocking, style is better than mcguanes, but can be erratic, amazing athlete though
smashed records in 20m and jumping 101cm, big body 193cm.
good kid
afl is more about fashion than ever, geelong winning the flag means that footballers over athletes were drafted this year. The elite athletes kangars, gourdis and gaertner were overooked, all will find a home in the PSD and rookie draft I would expect.
Full back is one position were non-elite kicking can be covered if you are elite at everything else Gourdis has probably never played Full Back, but he projects as having the skill sets to do so.
worth the risk IMHO especially in PSd and rookie draft

that is very true

can someone tell me the dates for the rookie draft because wouldnt it be fair to say all these kids will get snapped up in the PSD

Rookie Draft - Tue Dec 11 (10.30am)

And JON is 190/191 as well.
Has he grown an inch taller? as at the start of the year JON was listed at 188cm in the AFL Record.

Usually clubs say their first pick was their No 1. choice anyway but in the papers today Roos and Worsfold still say Cotchin and Kreuzer are their top 2.
Kreuzer must feel welcome at Carlton when the Blues say today they would've taken WA's Nicholas Naitanui instead of Kreuzer if Naitanui wasn't ineligible yet.
Also apparently we were interested in Easton Wood from Geelong Grammar:
"We've had a guy called Easton Wood at Geelong Grammar we've been looking at.
"Richmond have been to see him the last few weeks, Hawthorn have been to see him, so has Geelong, and Collingwood are telling him they are going to draft him."

And come join your best mate at Richmond ;)

The RFC website has a poll going on how would you rate Richmond’s performance in this year’s national draft and the trade period?
A very happy supporter base at the minute....
Excellent 37%
Very good 40%
Good 18%
Average 4%
Poor 2%
-
Always the small percentage who are NEVER happy. :D

I voted very good for the both the draft and trade period combined. Excellent would have been if we had kept hold of pick 19. Hopefully we can finish off the good work in the PSD and rookie draft.
-
Whilst people will not believe I actually voted Very Good, would have voted excellent if wed kept 19 and taken Selwood.
-
Shades of last year when people knocked the Polak trade affair :sleep

Agree totally.
Im pleased but would have been estatic had we kept pick 19 and landed Selwood too.

Inside Football gave us an A+ at the draft table (only Melbourne also got an A+).
Handed Cotchin on a plate, and he may end up the best player from this draft. Also were extremely fortunate that Rance fell to them at 19 [sic - should be 18]. Both will be 200-gamers at Tigerland while ruckman Dean Putt may prove to be a bargain at 51. All in all, a great day's work for the Tigers
Richmond A+
Melbourne A+
Brisbane A-
West Coast B+
Sydney B+
Carlton B+
North Melb B
Fremantle B
Geelong B
Bulldogs B
Essendon C+
Adelaide C
Collingwood C
St Kilda C
Port Adel. C
Hawthorn C- ;D

Add choosing Rioli over Rance when they needed to bolster their defence.

I'd give them an A++ for that considering where Rance ended up. Their drafting seems pretty good to me lol.
-
yes it does seem good and they have done extremely well but we have been happy with every draft for the last 10 years and look where that has got us.
i will reserve my judgement till season proper
