Just for fun I have put up a a ladder for the decade so far (2000-2009).Makes interesting and depressing reading.
1 Brisbane Played 213 won 124 draws 3 lost 86
2 geelong 210 122 3 85
3 port 214 125 2 87
4 sydney 213 119 3 91
5 adelaide 211 119 - 92
6 essendon210 112 2 96
7 wce 210 106 3 101
8 north 207 104 2 101
9 coll 210 105 - 105
10 haw 208 103 - 105
11 saints 207 93 3 111
12 WB 204 89 4 111
13 melb 207 92 1 114
14 freo 202 87 - 115
15 RICH 201 80 2 119
16 carlton 203 70 2 131
Note we have played the least amount of games.(only 3 finals)
The fact we are below freo makes me sad

Yep shows how crap we've been but no different really to the previous two decades as well. With only one finals appearance no surprise we are second last this decade. At least we're above the Blues lol.
It also shows you most recent premiership sides have a number of winning seasons and finals to push for a flag. Only Hawthorn bucks the trend being the only club outside the top 7 on that list to have won a flag. Adelaide has continually choked in finals being the only side in the top 7 not to have won a flag this decade and their window is now shut. One of the sides we need to jump over this year if we want to play finals in 2009.

Spuds coaching career.......45 wins from 113 games @ 39%
TW coaching career at richmond.....35 wins from 88 games @ 39%.Terry has two draws which gives him a slightly better record.
Spud took over a team that had won 21 of its previous 44 games.TW 11 out of its last 44.
Spuds last 3 years ...18 wins from 66 games at 27%.
Does anyone know why Spud wasnt sacked halfway through the 2003 season ?

Being 6 wins and 2 losses after 8 rounds would be my first guess.

I know others will disagree but Spud wasn't sacked before his 5 years were up for exactly the same reason why he got the job in the first place - there wasn't anyone else decent available who would go near us as senior coach. We had a reputation whether true or not of sacking coaches too frequently over 20 years and sacking coaches because they didn't produce instant results. Keeping Spud on was a message to the footy world that we would stick to a contract. It was a painful way of getting that message across as Spud was deadman walking but it was one thing Miller was right about - stability on and off-field leads over time leads to success. Wallace whatever your opinion of him is or any other decent coach would not have gone near us if we had sacked Spud in 2003. We are doing the same now with Wallace in giving him the 5 years we offered plus more of resources to deliver. Even if Plough fails this year we at least won't have the situation of 1999 where everyone (Malthouse, Sheeds, Thompson, etc) bar dud Spud says no. IIRC Thompson apparently laughed at the idea of coaching us when approached at that time. We were a basketcase of a club; We aren't anymore!

Yes he was a crap coach but at least Spud took Richmond to a preliminary final. Something Wallace has so far failed to do.
Both have won wooden spoons..
to say it is a big year for Terry is a massive understatement. He needs that record to improve significantly and in a hurry or he will end up back in the commentary chair next to Spud.

Just goes to show you how making a final without having the list for a sustained finals run can be deceiving if you are trying to compare Spud to any coach at AFL level.
-
The difference is Spud's first two years were quite decent (we were screwed by a mass list injuries in second half of 2000) before the disasterous drafting and top ups under his reign plus an inability to adapt to changes in footy itself kicked in and we spiralled into the abyss in his last 3 years :banghead. Wallace is looking to finally achieve finals in his 5th year so the trend of his "graph" is aiming upwards if we get to September this year. Even if he fails, the next coach will have a good young list to build upon and state of the art resources at his disposal which is something Plough didn't have when he started.

Thats right....forgot we had a good start to 2003....all went to poo after the wce game.

Here is our record against each club the last 10 times we have played them
adelaide 1 win
brisbane 4 wins 1 draw
carlton 4 wins
collingwood 4 wins
essendon 7 wins
freo 5 wins
geelong 1 win
hawthorn 5 wins
north 3 wins
melbourne 6 wins
port 3 wins
sydney 2 wins
st kilda 0 wins
WB 4 wins 1 draw
west coast 3 wins
We own you bommers
-
adelaide 1 win
geelong 1 win
sydney 2 wins
st kilda 0 wins
I still think Geelong is a class above us but the other 3 should be on our payback list this year if we want to play finals. Add in North and these sides have owned us big time.

I would also like us to beat Sydney at the SCG. We haven't got close to them on that ground for the last two years.

Tell me about it, the only game I get to see in person and it's been as painful as the last few years.
The only plus out of the proposed Western Sydney White Elephants team is that I would be guarenteed to see a good win.

We haven't beaten Sydney in Sydney since 2004 and we only beat them by a point at the MCG last time we beat them in 2005.

The last time Richmond played finals in two consecutive years
Anyone Know......?
1974-75
In fact we played finals for 5 straight years....1971-75
How many finals series do we have to play in a row before we get our credibility back ?
-
One would be a start

But how can the path be walked upon when it hasn't even been built yet? :lol
If you are talking about the old path...well that was demolished and is now a Krispy Kreme!

The purpose of this thread was to illuminate how poor we have been this decade.
We have had an even worst decade than the 80s & 90s....Stats dont lie.
THEY say we eat our own at tigerland....I reckon we are the most loyal fans in the comp
Hope everyone enjoyed this thread...Im new to oer and absolutely LOVE it

Not wanting to be argumentative mat, the thing is you would have to be a completely deaf and blind numbskull not to know this already. This thread seems to be an exercise in stating the bleeding obvious and frankly has been done to death over the period of several years.
I don't understand why, in this period of exceptional optimism, we need to revisit a past that we are trying to leave behind.
Tell you what, now that I know what is in this thread I will personally ignore it. I'm am sure some will enjoy this thread as you hope, and it is not up to me to censor the content of this site. I didn't get why this thread was created but that's my problem.
OER is a great site and it is terrific that you like it. One of the things OER has that perhaps other sites do not have is a robust sharing of opinions. Please do not take my post as a personal attack, it is not meant to be.

RROFO is very wise because as Confucious also say, he who throw stones should live in strong hut.

Thanks Chuck. Just moved into a new fallout shelter, I'm sitting pretty. :thumbsup

2 finals series to instill real fear in the opposition that the sleeping giant is awakening and it is not a token flash in the pan year like 95 or 01. :cheers
3 finals series that would include 2 top 4 finishes and possibly a grand final. :thumbsup
if by 5 finals series in succession we have won a flag or flags you'll find the prvious 26 years of abject mediocrity will be consigned to history and we will be forging a new history. :clapping
As for us Richmond fans. We all know we are the best and we support the best club in the league with the best theme song so any success that has some sort of longevity will make us even more parochial. :thumbsup
