Voss said he was pleased with the progress of Brown who played half a match and would also appear in the final trial against Richmond on Friday.
"Two of our three matches have been played in wet conditions so it would be nice to get some Queensland sunshine for that match."
Brisbane are shopping for goal-kicking options away from Brown and Daniel Bradshaw and the match provided no serious alternatives.
Voss said he would try and play a close to full strength side for the Richmond match though key defender Daniel Merrett and Simon Black may not be ready until round one.
Brennan is out too with a quad strain.

Richmond welcomes back stars, Blues extend bench
Jon Ralph and Sam Edmund | March 11, 2009
RICHMOND will recall Matthew Richardson, Brett Deledio, Nathan Foley and Ben Cousins for Friday night's final warm-up.
The Tigers, who take on Brisbane at the Gold Coast's Carrara Stadium, will play a full-strength side as they countdown to their round one clash with Carlton.
Cousins has recovered well from concussion, despite having scans in the Epworth Hospital after his Richmond debut, and is keen to play.
Graham Polak is expected to play for Coburg on Saturday.

Richmond will play its final NAB Challenge practice match on the Gold Coast on Friday and is treating the game as its most important hit-out of the summer. It is likely to field a side closest to the one it will select for round one.
Richmond sought the Gold Coast practice match as it hosts Adelaide in a home-and-away game there this year and wanted to have a dress rehearsal at the ground to be familiar with the conditions.

Cousins fit but head still spinning
Laine Clark, Gold Coast | March 13, 2009
He may have fully recovered from concussion but Ben Cousins' head is still spinning.
Richmond coach Terry Wallace said Cousins would play a "full four quarters" in Friday night's AFL practice match against Brisbane Lions on the Gold Coast after shaking off a head knock in his comeback game.
But Wallace conceded the former Brownlow Medallist was looking forward to life becoming "more normal" after the enormous hype surrounding his new life as a Tiger.
Certainly Cousins did not find any solace when he jetted into the Gold Coast for Richmond's final hit-out before the season began in earnest.
"You still wander through the airport and get the same (reception)," Wallace laughed.
"But it's just the nature of him. There's been so much general interest in his story that you would have had to be living under a rock not to notice it.
"But we expected it. And each time you come to a new venue it will be the same sort of thing.
"But as the season rolls along and he keeps playing, hopefully it will become more normal."
Asked how Cousins was handling it all, Wallace said: "I would sense he will be pleased when the ball is bounced, and it will be more about footy than anything else.
"But you have to wear what comes your way."
Cousins' comeback stalled almost as soon as it could begin - he suffered a delayed concussion after grabbing an impressive 21 touches in his long awaited return, an NAB Cup clash with Collingwood on February 26.
After missing Richmond's last clash with St Kilda at Shepparton, Cousins needed a "real searching run" against the Lions to ensure he was ready for the 2009 opener on March 26 against Carlton, Wallace said.
"We were probably keen to give him a smaller hit-out in NAB three (against the Saints), but he missed that because of the knock," he said.
"But two weeks on he's absolutely fine. He's been 10 days into competitive training with no dramas.
"And to be honest he needs a real searching run tomorrow night to top himself up for round one.
"From a footy sense his game time is probably down on what would be the norm, but a good hit-out tomorrow night and he will be fine.
"If he gets through tomorrow night he will be picked for round one."
Wallace said Richmond would not hold back against the Lions, describing the practice match as a "full dress rehearsal" for round one.
As a result, Wallace named a 24-man squad including Cousins, Matthew Richardson, Brett Deledio, Nathan Foley, Nathan Brown and Shane Tuck, and just one rookie - ruckman Andrew Browne.
The Lions have also named a strong squad after their shock loss to Melbourne last Friday night in Cairns.
They welcome back Tim Notting and Justin Sherman after they were rested against the Demons while skipper Jonathan Brown will play his first full game of 2009.
He was used for just the first half of their 37-point loss to Melbourne.
However, Jared Brennan (quad) will be rested ahead of the March 28 season opener against West Coast.
The Lions have not beaten Richmond since round 14, 2004.

Cousins circus is in town
Nick Smart
March 13th, 2009
ROLL up, roll up -- the Ben Cousins travelling circus has arrived on the Gold Coast.
The one-man headline touched down at Gold Coast Airport yesterday with his Richmond teammates and was quickly whisked away to his Surfers Paradise hotel before heading to Carrara for a light training session.
The tanned and buff Cousins has been protected by Richmond officials since he joined the club and would not comment yesterday.
The recovering drug addict will be the star attraction in tonight's NAB Challenge clash between Richmond and the Brisbane Lions at Gold Coast Stadium.
He was certainly a hit with the Richmond fans who came to greet the Tigers at Gold Coast Airport yesterday. The 30-year-old was glued to his mobile phone but signed autographs and chatted briefly with fans. But as expected he was camera shy and was well aware of the The Gold Coast Bulletin's photographer on the scene.
His return to the game has certainly been the talk of the AFL world over the past few months.
The buzz has been strong -- so much so that he has just been backed, in Brownlow Medal betting, to the tune of more than $1 million.
Betting shops Darwin Sportsbet, Sportingbet Australia and Eskander's Betstar all said Cousins was by far their worst result after a flood of money this week. And TAB Sportsbet, always the biggest player in Brownlow betting, already faces a payout of almost $450,000 if Cousins wins.
The question everyone has been asking is will Cousins get back to his Brownlow medal-winning best?
Gold Coast Football Club coach Guy McKenna, a former teammate of Cousins at West Coast, said it was an impossible question to answer.
"Only his body will ultimately give him that answer in time," he said. "Yes, he's a year older and has spent a year out of the game but he will leave no stone unturned to perform as good as he was before his break."
With so much interest one thing is certain -- he'll bring people through the turnstiles. And that's set to be the case tonight.
GCFC chief operating officer Scott Munn said he expected a lot of interest in the new Richmond recruit tonight.
Munn said there was a lot of curiosity about the return of Cousins and he expects the Coast's big Richmond support base to be out in force.
Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss said he would not be paying special attention to Cousins.
"We have to look at Ben, we have to look at Nathan Foley, Matthew Richardson and a lot of

Memories galore for Tigers pair
Nick Smart
March 13th, 2009
THE memories will come flooding back for Gold Coast products Andrew Raines and Luke McGuane when they run out on to the Carrara turf tonight.
The Richmond pair arrived yesterday and will be in the team to take on the Brisbane Lions at Gold Coast Stadium at 7.30pm.
Raines was at Palm Beach-Currumbin for 10 years before going to Southport Sharks in the state league for a year in 2003. His father Geoff is an ex-Richmond premiership player and Brisbane Bear.
And when young Raines takes the field tonight he will be reminded of the first time he watched a VFL-AFL game as a kid at the same venue.
"It is funny because we are back at Carrara Stadium and it is where I went to my first AFL game," he said.
"I remember watching my dad play his 250th game for the Bears up there when they first started. Things have come a long way since the Bears were running around to the Brisbane Lions of today."
McGuane, a lean and lanky 74kg teenager from Broadbeach when he went to Richmond after the 2004 national draft, will be looking for a big performance in his own backyard.
"I have not played at Carrara during my time at Richmond," he said. "I did a lot of times back in the days with the Gold Coast Stingrays representative side. We used to go there and train every second day or so, so I have a few memories."
McGuane, whose father Gavan was a legendary Southport Sharks player and coach in the 1980s, grew up playing Aussie rules on the Gold Coast when it was not so popular.
He paid credit to the success of the Brisbane Lions for the rise in the game's participation and profile over the past decade.
"I grew up around the time when the Lions won three premierships so people started getting more AFL orientated here towards the end of my stay here," he said.

did we have any luck with a radio station that may be streaming tonights proceedings
BF saying the AFL has banned stations from broadcasting via the net the NAB Challenge games ::). That's why we couldn't hear last weeks game online. Same thing happened with many of the games last week. Port/Roos and Crows/Hawks were both broadcast in SA but not online.
Does the game start 8.30pm Melbourne time?

why can't we learn to put teams away?
Melbourne, R22, 2008.
Teams that are more competitive than the Dees were last year.
Anyway glad we won the result was kind of academic to me once I heard
Axel's ankle was in ice as there are definentely bigger fish to fry.
I just hope he is okay and he won't be missing any football just like all
of us are hoping. :pray

I know he kicked three goals, but how did Brown go all up for anyone who was there?
-
Julz said we were very fumbly. It was slippery conditions all night. Just started raining when the final siren went.

rance good in last
richo typical richo. Took some great marks, missed a sitter, gave away a couple of frees.

Big Richmond crowd and a great atmosphere.

Yep. From what smokey was saying we dominated the first 3 quarters but didn't make the most of it on the scoreboard. Brisbane came back in the last but when you look at it we still have the same number of scoring shots in the quarter. More set shot goalkicking practice needed by the sound it.
-
Browny was great. Took a screamer which would have been perfect if he kept a hold on the ball. Cousins showed everyone that all he's lacking is match fitness. Silky skills. Hubby reckonds Cuz is still settling into the Richmond side. You got the impression he was trying to hide in the background during the warm-up. Everyone had the fumbles but hubby reckons it was cause it was slippery out there. Last quarter saw Bradshaw all alone in the goal square with 3 Richmond opponents. Must clarify - when I said Richo gave some goals away, I meant instead of kicking them himself he passed them onto Browny or someone else (Riewoldt?) but they didn't result in goals for Richmond. Didn't see a lot of Browne. Angus Graham shows that he is lacking experience (where's Patto these days?). Raines did some good and some bad things. Crowd roared every time Richo marked the ball. Foley never came back on the ground. Sanchez was ok. Tambling needs to make his tackles stick and not give up so easily when chasing his opponent.
-

Cuz got 31 possessions and one of our best afield according to the AFL site.

Richardson, Schulz, Deledio, Cousins - Richmonds Bests (afl.com)

Schultz - I don't think so. What about Browny?

How did our lesser like mids go like Jacko, Edwards and White go?
Who was on Bradshaw who kicked 5 goals?
-
Yeah I thought Jacko, Edwards and White did ok. I like White's attitude - he's a tryer. If you ask me, Edwards is a better player than say Tambling.
Bradshaw - hard to say as for half the game he was furthest away from me. I do know that McGuane and Moore double tagged him in the last quarter. Smokey might be able to clarify this better. Didn't see a lot of Jonathon Brown.

Ta Julz.
They've been using Edwards as a small defender as well as in the midfield lately. Where did he mostly play last night?
-
you people need to get over the fact that Tambling will NEVER be the player you want him to be.
Make tackles stick!! hahaha he wouldn't even know how to spell the word tackle..
-
Here's my match report but excuse the lack of journalistic polish please:
We won the toss but there was no breeze and no advantage. It had been showery during the day but the ground held up well and wasn't slippery to the players, only the ball that skidded a fair bit. We started with Morton Browne Foley and McMahon on the bench and I don't know who/if we had subs. Schulz at FF and Jack at CHF. The crowd was around 5k - might have been more - and we definitely outnumbered them. My initial guesstimate was about 80/20 but I reckon 70/30 was probably closer - it was very obvious though.
The game started out slowly and we started to get on top a bit tawards the middle of the term. Bowden was playing a linking role from defence to attack and Deledio was getting heaps of it. Richo was roaming all over the ground and picking up quite a few possessions in the backline. Schulz marked from a good lead up and switch but missed a simple set shot. We were fiddling a bit but not nearly as much as the first game and we were on top in the midfield. Edwards was doing a Kingy - running all over the place chasing anything that moved and he was getting a lot of possession but made a few costly errors of judgement - trying to break tackles, hanging on to the ball for too long etc. The umpires were a bit hot but no-one was getting a benefit. We looked much more potent than them for the term but only led by 3 points. Best for the quarter were Brown, White, Bowden, Richo and Deledio (not in any order).
We got on top early in the second and outplayed them for most of the quarter. Tambling and Cousins started to get a lot of possessions and used the ball well, and this gave good supply to the forwards who were teaming and pressuring well. We seemed to lift in intensity in this term and the Lions chased all quarter. Schulz limped off very quickly with a leg injury that initially looked like it might have been a hammy but he cam back on so obviously wasn't. What was also evident was that we used intelligent switching of play a lot, especially coming from the wing area - we would look up and bang a long 50 mt pass to a teammate on his own on the other side of the ground for a good set up. It happened on a number of occasions and worked well. Our skills were definitely improved from 3 weeks ago. Best players for the quarter were Deledio, Tambling, McMahon, Bowden and Cousins.
Graham came on after Browne had played a lot of the first half. We continued to apply good pressure in the forward line and were getting a heap of the ball but we started to go back to our bad habit of overusing the ball when there was no need. We were in control and we started to get a bit cute at times which led to a few turnovers. Tambling was getting heaps of the ball but after a faultless 2nd quarter he made a couple of costly errors that really shouldn't have been made at this level - 2 dropped easy overhead marks spring to mind. Cousins class was really standing out by now and he showed that with a bit more conditioning he will be capable of playing at very close to his best. Edwards was quite amazing - he was the hardest worker/trier on the ground but he made quite a lot of mistakes. I will forgive him because he was always trying something - hopefully he will learn as he gets older. We were still playing a lot better than them but overused (and consequently butchered) the ball a lot. Best for the quarter were Cousins, McGuane, White and Bowden. For a supposed 'seasonal late starter', Bowden is definitely up and about at this point in time.
Graham was on the ball for the first part of the last quarter and was getting beaten badly in the hitouts. Their midfield got on top and once they got a run on it was hard to stop. To add to the problem, the umpires went a bit trigger happy and started paying heaps of tiggy-touchwood frees. Of course, the side with the run on got the benefit from that. We were now taking poor options and you could see a drop in intensity from some of the players whose fitness is still not at a peak. Our forward line also started to fly against each other and lacked the cohesive efforts of earlier in the game - Brown was the main culprit but he had mates. It was actually the backline that turned the game around by stopping the onslaught at the last line and they held firm against a lot of opposition pressure until the Lions run ended and you could see that happen about 10 minutes from the end. We started to break even in the midfield and the game played out fairly evenly from that point. White especially, stood out in the last quarter with his running - you would suggest he is one of the fittest in the team by that effort because he ran hard all night. Another one that stood out in this quarter was Rance - he showed a fair bit (good 2nd efforts) and I'm very confident now that he is going to make it. Other for the quarter were White, Bowden, McGuane and Deledio.
Overall I thought we showed significant improvement from the first 2 games and it was only our poor conversion from very gettable shots (Simmonds missed one from a metre out) that kept Brisbane in the game at 3/4 time. We are not fit enough to run out a full match yet but will be very close by Round 1. You can see the improvement in 'fit' game time each week and I'm sure this has been deliberately planned. Our best for the game were Cousins, Deledio, Bowden, McGuane, White, Richo and Brown, and serviceable games from Tambling, McMahon, Simmonds, Jackson, Tuck and Edwards.
And finally a couple of predictions/obversations:
Browne is already a better ruck option than Graham.
Deledio will be very hard to beat for Jack Dyer #2 - barring injury.
Cousins will win a couple of games off his own efforts this season - barring injury.
Bowden will be a very damaging player in a more versatile role this year (similar to Richo last year).
McGuane is our best defender and that is taking nothing away from Moore or Thursfield.
Tambling has the ability to be a match winner but lacks a lot of confidence.
McMahon's delivery was first class tonight - not one even average pass that I saw.
Bradshaw kicked his goals with his only touches (or frees) and was beaten by his opponents on the night.
That's all for now - any questions then fire away.
-
They've been using Edwards as a small defender as well as in the midfield lately. Where did he mostly play last night?
Mostly midfield but he covered some territory.
-
...
Didn't see a lot of Jonathon Brown.
Only played the first half and only got a few touches. Looks a fair way from his prime yet.
-
Schultz - I don't think so. What about Browny?
Agree Julz. Shulz did ok but wasn't in our best. I will say this however, he does look a lot more comfortable in the forward line with the way it is structured now (no Richo). He actually looks like an integral part, not making up numbers.
-
25 scoring shots to 15 , we must have had a heap more I50s ..fairly convincing effort by the sounds of it :thumbsup
Yep, we did, a lot more - especially through the first 3 quarters.
-
I know he kicked three goals, but how did Brown go all up for anyone who was there?
Very typical Browny game Moi. Got a fair bit of it, used it well but undid some of his good work by being selfish, he flew into Jack on a couple of occasions and if it was Richo he would have gone ballistic.
-
Great report smokey....any news on foleys injury
-
Brisbane full strengh, minus Black?
sounds like Brown (Nathan) scored a few behinds too.
how did Browne go in the Ruck?
Hard to say if they were close to full strength Torch because I don't know them as well as us!! They did look young and were missing a couple like Black and Brennan but most of the other 'names' were there. They were pretty disappointing I must say and I wouldn't see them making the 8 on that performance tonight.
Andrew Browne competed well in the ruck and was visible around the ground - got to a lot of contests, especially in defence to help out against Brown and Bradshaw. Wouldn't have had a lot of stats but looked far more competitive and likely than Graham - he was just out of his depth and looked like the reincarnation of Trent Knobel except Knobel used to win some hitouts.

No sorry Mat. I missed it completely (must have been texting MT) :-[ and wasn't aware of it until much later. He was virtually unsighted on the field and as the others have said - had the ice packs on for the rest of the game.
-
Another observation.
Both teams played a zone style game but it didn't degenerate into a flood and for the most part there was a lot of run, carry and long kicking. Hopefully a sign of things to come. The short kick/handball/possession game was only evident in small patches and was only noticeable in us early on when we used it to set up for a switch, and then in the 3rd quarter when we got a bit cute.
-
Here's my match report but excuse the lack of journalistic polish please:

Great report smokey :clapping :bow :cheers
The switching of play from midfield/wing to the opposite HFF you mention was something noticeable we were working on during training on Wednesday. Obviously trying to outflank the opposition. Good to hear we were able to convert our good training onto the park against real opposition.
You're right about Blingers. He can play good footy when he believes in himself. He needs to do so more consistently though.
Hopefully Whitey is in for a big year. His pace can be a damaging weapon for us if he gets enough of the ball especially forward of centre.
Did Bowden push forward at times or was he used mainly behind the ball?

Thanks heaps everyone for the updates. :thumbsup
And what can you say Smokey but great stuff :clapping :clapping :clapping
Sounds like we're just about right to go for round 1.
Interesting your view on Browne vs Gus, cant wait to see how Browne goes for Coburg this year and maybe the tiges later on.

Thank you smokey for your report and your efforts durng the course of the evening.
And thanks also to Julz
Great effort both of you
Browne is already a better ruck option than Graham.
I have to say this doesn't surpsie me at all :thumbsup
When you think about it we've picked up some very good young players through the rookie draft :thumbsup

Thanks for the reports all.
Good hitout by the sounds of it.

Thanks MT. Bowden played a role very similar to what we saw from Richo last year. He floated from full back to full forward and provided a heap of 'link up' - more from behind the ball but some forward as he led and marked from the forward 50 on a couple of occasions. He was very important to the setup and very damaging. It is another wildcard that opposition teams will have to consider because he almost demanded a tagger playing in the manner he did last night. The 30+ possession games might not be so prevalent in this role but he will be much more effective. This is all dependant on him playing this role for the season of course!

No, hats off to Smokey. I just got so caught up in the game.
-
Prediction- Browne will be promoted from the rookie list for Petts and will play round 1. Take it to the BANK

Thanks smokey :cheers. I think Joel's days of being one of our back six are over. This is a better role for him and the team.

Sport Tonight just showed Cuz's goal. Very nice :thumbsup.
That double pirouette that left his Brisbane opponent for dead wasn't bad either :thumbsup.

He did that man-oeuvre about half a dozen times - he just makes time and space out of nothing!

Both Seven and Nine showed the goal too. Hopefully one of them will put the vision up on their website.

good reports smoke and julz, tell me do you think cuz game was an improvement on his hitout v the pies?

good reports smoke and julz, tell me do you think cuz game was an improvement on his hitout v the pies?
Big improvement. He looked far more polished this time and on the pace much more. He stood out many times whereas vs Collingwood I thought he was quite anonymous.

I said of his debut that he rarely showed the cuz trademark dash in jumping out of the blocks and carrying the pill, is that what you mean?

He did that a couple of times but what stood out more was the ease with which he threaded himself through traffic to give off a perfect pass (by hand or foot). At times you would have thought "he's gone" but he just dances around opponents like they are standing still. And what was noticeable was that he kept up with the pace of the game much better and for much longer. I think the 'dashes' are in there just waiting for that little bit more fitness to really appear.

You can see that at training also. He's able to do more and more. As long as Cuz's body/hammies can cope with the continuous weekly recovery from an AFL game then watch out 2nd half of the year. He's well ahead of where I thought he'd be at this stage. Fingers crossed :pray.
