Mike's preseason top 50 comes out tomorrow morning in the Herald-Sun.
I wonder where he has Richo this year and how many Tigers make the list?
-
If we are lucky we will have 2 in the top 50
Richo and Lids
-
Mike seems to like Foley so I think he might sneak in.
For pure hype Cuz might even be thrown in.

Nah I reckon Mike will give Benny a little box all on his own explaining why he isn't in his top 50 :rollin
-
From memory only Richo made Mike's preseason top 50 last year. Lids and Foley should be in it this year as well if this one is meant to be a prediction about the best of 2009. I wonder if he goes outside the square if Kel could squeeze in as a key defender.
-
Kel Moore might surprise..

Lids made it last year MT....somewhere in the 40's I believe.

Mike is on SEN now about to talk about his top 50
Here's him on video talking about it.

Says he gets it down to 80-90 easily and then picks like in the schoolyard. Treats them as all fit at this time of the year.

Mike on SEN:
Lids at 41 - good player but a fair bit of improvement still left in him. Going at 80% at the moment. Doesn't think Lids know how good he could be.
If our best players have big years - Richo, Lids, Foley finish top 3 in B&F - then Richmond will finish top 5.
Cousins - doesn't think he is quite the package he was. Not sure if Cuz has the confidence in his body to run and kick as hard as he use to (re: because of his hammies).
Cotchin - Not considered. Only been in the AFL one year. Same as Selwood last year.
-
Fair enough no Foley.
Injury, tagging whatever..he dropped off a little last season from his stellar '07.
Hopefully he has a better year in '09 and forces his way in there.
Can also understand Cuz's omission seeing as he hasn't played for 18 months.
Lid's is stiff given some names ahead of him. I think he should be half a dozen places higher.
-
These lists are built to irritate......
Lids - 550 touches, 30 odd goals averaging 7 marks per game is somehow rated below Ottens - 200 touches, 14 goals, averaging 4 marks,
Some players get a higher rating because of where they play or who they play for - not what they do.
-
Birchall??
Sorry I don't rate him at all.
Jarrad McVeigh, he finally had a break out season, IMO (maybe biased) Lids season was much better, and McVeigh is rated higher?
-
These lists are built to irritate......
I think Sheahan was built to irritate.
Ottens 33 what a joke, made to look good by a stellar midfield, more like 133
-
I really like Birchall as a player but he's not in the top 50 in the league yet.
-
Not too bad from Mike except for Birchall ???. If the Hawk defenders are so good why do they need a 15 man zone in front of them ::).
Very lucky to be in it at all: Birchall, Griffen (at least Lids has a B&F), Rioli (good but not top 50)
Too High: Brown, Goodes, Glass - living on past reputation. Judd too is a fraction high unless he returns to his West Coast form this year.
Too Low: Kane Cornes - tags yet wins the hardball and plenty of it consistently for a number of years now.
Unlucky to miss: Foley, Hayes, Scott Thompson, Porplezia. It must be the first year Brad Johnson hasn't been included because he's getting older now.
-
Reigning premiership teams usually get a majority of selections. Hence you get a large proportion of Hawthorn players who are handy but not elite. Its not like the Geelong premiership team of 07 where a large proportion of players virtually selected themselves.
This is merely an opinionated article that gets the juices pumping and sells a couple of extra papers. Big deal. Why would a top 50 I would select be any less noteworthy than that of Mike's provided I give my reasons.
-
Foley does not deserve to be in the team.....not yet.
-
Foley does not deserve to be in the team.....not yet.
have to agree with you Daniel...once he works out how to overcome the tag then he deserves to be there
As for some of the others .....pluzzzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeee give me a break....
Scarlett in the top 10 - top 25 yeah but not the top 10
-
Foley's second half of the year obviously went against him. He was playing for Victoria and starred midway through last year.
-
Rioli in the top 50 after only one season......Yeah Right.
On Perth radio tonight (6pr) they were whinging over the fact that there was only one docker on the list. They were also saying that Pav would be higher if he played for a Victorian team. :banghead

I don't know much but if the likes of Pav, J Brown, B Fevola & N Riewoldt aren't more value to their teams than Hodge I'll go hey.
Would be a brave man to swap a hbf for a key forward. Seems his brave deeds in the finals last have distorted people's views considerably on his overall value.

I think quite a few Hawks were a little overrated by Mike.

I'd have Luke Hodge at Punt Rd in an instant. A gun who is tough as nails, solid body, excellent foot skills and decision making, and is versatile enough to play midfield, the 'quarterback' role across HB, as well as pushes forward to kick goals. He's ahead of Judd over the past 2 years that's for sure.
Would be a brave man to swap a hbf for a key forward.
We must have had plenty of brave men at Punt Rd over the past 25 years :whistle ;D
