Johnson led Tiger revolt
Caroline Wilson | May 21, 2009
KANE Johnson has emerged as a key participant in Monday's player push to have Terry Wallace removed as coach of Richmond.
Although it was captain Chris Newman who delivered the unpalatable message to Wallace three days ago, The Age understands that Newman's predecessor Johnson was the loudest voice in the small group of Richmond footballers who heavily influenced the rookie skipper to approach the coach.
As the dust settled yesterday on the strife-torn club, it became apparent that Tiger football boss Craig Cameron made it clear to the players in no uncertain terms that they would not be deciding Wallace's future.
Cameron's message was not only backed up by president Gary March but also endorsed by significant voices in the playing group including veterans Matthew Richardson and Joel Bowden.
It has now become clear that Newman strongly suggested to Wallace on Monday that he step aside as coach.
The new skipper, who was celebrating his 27th birthday, said he believed the playing group had reached the end of its professional relationship with Wallace.
A number of concerns were raised and it also became clear that some senior players believed that Wallace would soon be gone and had become fearful the club could retain him until the end of the year.
By Monday night, Newman was reportedly remorseful once he realised the massive ramifications of his actions.
Having been encouraged to work on improving communication between coach and players, Newman at some point in recent days had become overwhelmed by concern that Wallace had lost a significant group of players.
The club has privately vowed to continue to support Newman as captain with the prevailing view that his performance on Monday in confronting Wallace was well-intentioned if naive.
Johnson, 31, who stepped down as captain last year and has had misgivings about the coach for at least a year, is due to return from injury some time in June.
He is understood to have spoken with Newman and had received some support from another senior player in Troy Simmonds. Jake King also spent a small portion of time speaking with Wallace in Newman's presence.
It is not known whether Johnson has been spoken to by club executives, all of whom refused to comment yesterday on what took place in Tuesday's talks.
Wallace, in turn, believed he was facing the sack on Monday night and revealed as much to at least one associate, which explained the misreporting of his fate which took place two days ago.
The coach was never sacked and the Richmond hierarchy made its case plain to the players at the start of Tuesday's meeting.
Bowden and Richardson spoke out strongly against a player revolt, pointing out that such a decision was not theirs to make and that the club's reputation would only be further damaged should the players be seen to have sacked the coach.
The Tuesday talks, which took place with 13 senior players in Port Melbourne, revealed a number of divisions among the playing group regarding the coach's future and Wallace's comments to Mitch Morton after the Port Adelaide loss were only briefly raised.
While Wallace stayed away from the club yesterday, as is customary for a Wednesday, the coach is understood to have emerged from Tuesday's crisis meeting satisfied that he had the support of the Richmond board and administration to continue as coach of the club until the end of the season.
Although Wallace and the club remain mutually convinced that he will not receive another coaching contract, the preference is for Wallace to complete the season after his fate has been decided by June's much-vaunted mid-year review.
The crisis talks also made it clear to the decision-makers at the club that internal development required some external assistance, with a program such as Leading Teams — utilised, among others, by the highly successful Geelong in recent years — put forward as one possible solution to player issues at Tigerland.

Why would you bother quoting anything that fat ugly pig idiot gossip slag writes in the fish and chip wrapper
Edit: please do not avoid the swear filter

Sorry i have read this article about 3 times now just to make sure i get the names right.
Thats Sugar, the most pathetic captain we have had at our club.
Newman, see above. Coming at a close second
Jake King and Simmonds. Poor babies not getting enough game time is it??
GIVE ME A stuffin BREAK. MARCH SHOULD HAVE SACKED THE WHOLE LOT OF THEM FOR BRINGING THE CLUB INTO DISREPUTE THEN SOLARIUM SHOULD HAVE DONE THE SAME FOR PUTTING US THROUGH TORTURE FOR 5 YEARS.
WHAT THE stuff IS HAPPENING TO THIS CLUB.
-
OMG...the media must see Richmond as the gift that keeps on giving.
-
i bet now terry regrets that he never made joel or richo captain . serves terry right, the ones he selected are the ones that stuffed him
learn from ur mistakes terrr, the 2 guys that should have been captains are backing u and saved ur arse lmao
and the 2 guys u picked are stuffing u

Very disappointing effort from Kane Johnson stabbing a guy in the back who supported him for all these years when most other coaches would have retired him years ago. The fact he's not got on the park this year proves he shouldn't have stayed on this year. Door is over that way Johnson.
Kinda funny seeing Jake King in on the talks, he has no place being there at all, his papers are stamped. I hardly see what Simmo has to complain about either, he's been crap too. Definitely hope all three are gone at the end of the year now.
As for Newman, well given he's pretty fresh with the captaincy and we know he's been working with Johnson closely which makes it all the more disappointing that Sugar would get him to do his dirty work. I would suggest that Johnson would have been able to use his influence over Newman being the ex-Captain, so I won't call for Newman's head, however he would land us a decent pick at trade time so would be happy to put him on the market now. He's probably the exact type of player we should be trading for picks really.
Good to see Bowden & Richo have some sense

Caro needs a makeover ;D

Relax!!!
We're all just getting overexcited at exit interviews!!!! Nothing to see here, move on!!!

I just dont believe anything i read anymore! Pinch of salt.......

So, if Caro is on the money, we now have:
- A coach who has publicly stated that he won't walk because it will adversely impact his reputation.
- A club that won't sack the coach because it would adversely impact it's chances of getting a good replacement
- A subset of the playing list that wants the coach sacked
- A second subset that wants to keep the coach
- The new leadership team doing the bidding for the old leadership team
Any way you look at it, the present situation is untenable.
Team selection this week should provide an insight into the winners and losers
I would think the leaders of the failed coupe d'tat would be hung out to dry.

Or the whole simplistic 'real' story has become so distorted by the media and subsequent public innuendo that it bears no resemblance to what really happened.

Which players? Two who can't and shouldn't get a game and one who should be dropped this week as well.
If it was Jack, Mitch, Kel, Thursty, Luke and Trent who did the dirty it may emit a different smell.
Instead all it does is look like 3 players with used-by dates that already smell rotten trying to influence club affairs for their own personal gain. Selfishness of the highest order that the board must stamp the life out of and continue to let Terry coach as best he can. Not with back stabber trying to undermine him at every turn. Those three have to be kicked out of the club ASAP.
-
Must admit when I was watching one of the snipets yesterday when they got Johnson outside the club.
I'm thinking to myself wtf are you still here, he has ABSOLTELY NO PLACE at the RFC anymore.
Give him his marching orders now and promote another rookie - show some balls RFC.
LMAO @ this loser list clogger.
Goes for a few others also, and LMAO @ them being the main Squealers, maybe their kids go to Clifton Hill Primary School ;D

ironic it is these 3 players who are involved. 3 who have no place in the team in the future. interesting thing is, they most likely will have more of a shot of playing while under wallac. once the new coach is here they will be out the door for sure
-
Johnson should know better sack him
-
I have never like Kane. I would have never made the dope our captain either.
Now he is using his so called knowledge to get Newman to do his dirty work.
As he was too scared to do it while he was in the power position.
We as supporters should be calling for his blood, as what the hell had he done for us.
I can tell you, All he has done is taken money pretending to be a AFL player.
No wonder we have a hard time on the feild as a group we are so divided.
We need to come together as one and this will make a big difference on feild as well as off field.
-
Can't blame Newman for anything but probablay just naivty here.
The guy has had an absolute baptism of fire, hell and brimstone. As Lyon pointed out, Cousins saga, Carlton drumming, being 1-7, all the expectations, Richo future, Wallace future.. dear o dear. You take a lot more on when you captain a football club these days.
I honestly believe Newman has done the right thing here, all he has done wrong is approach the wrong person. Newman should have gone to Gary March. He should have gone to Gary March and explained "Gary, this has happened I have 12 players in my playing group that believe the playing relationship with Terry is doomed and want to start fresh immediately. It may seem as a soft way out but we don't want to waste the rest of the season."
Then it's up to the administration to do there job and look after the future of the club and then the administration could have told Newman that after Round 12 he wont be coaching.

Bushranger ;D Kane Johnson football speaks for itself, His a blocker to allow the other midfielders to get the ball moving the same as Shane Tuck. no-one can denie he puts his body on the line for his team-mates & has been a good player while at Richmond. l do however think his time is to retire which we all know was the end of season if not already.
If we didnot have such players our star midfielders would be nursing some bigger injuries each week.
But this does not allow a player of his statue to start making decisions. if he was doing it at my buisness he be sacked.

I owe Bowden an apology. I have heard he has been undermining TW for year yet if this story is correct he has been doing the exact opposite. The fact that Bowden and Richo had the strength and wisdom to not look to take sides but push for a decision that was best for the club shows their leadership. Newman has made a career threatening blunder here and will not be a long term captain on the back of this.
Johnson was not appointed by TW, he was found to be the best leader after all the players conducted interviews with an outside leadership agency who recommended Kane to be our captain. TW agreed to the choice but he did not choose his because of his loyalty.
Someone asked yesterday how you find dessenters in the club, well these names will be the main players but there will be others underneath. The positive aspect of all this is that it has come from players who are on the way out regardless so the cancer will be cut away, so to speak, without harming our development.
Dissapointing how this has all played out but hopefully now the media knows TW is staying on to the end of the year, this circus will end. TW now just needs to be told to play the kids at all costs.

LMAO AT A FEW ON HERE WHO APPLUADED SUGAR LEADERSHIP ON HERE IN THE PAST..
hahahahaha what a loser he is.
he should have been shown the door when he did a Fevola on Stkilda Road. The difference between the 2 is FEV CAN PLAY
as i said WORST CPATAIN WE HAVE EVER HAD AT OUR CLUB
-
Totally agree with you Daniel161.
He was only a money player and never real captain.
Other will say he was playing injured, so what, if you go out like that you should be able to play with it, or take yourself off the list till you are better.

Bowden may be sticking up for Terry because if a new coach comes in he might get dropped for a younger player.... :rollin

I would be of the thoughts that Joel will finish at the end of this year anyway.
I can't see him with us after the end of the year.
He lacks accounability onfeild.
Yes he racks up possesions, but how many are useful.
He lets the player he is on to be free too much, and this hurts us.
And a new coach will not let that go on anymore.
So in my opinion he is, gone.
-
Does anyone for sure know if Caro's facts are facts? Might just be another chapter in this whole 'getting muddier by the minute' saga.

Talk about twisting the facts
There were 14 senior players in the meeting to discuss the future plans for the club, at no stage has ANYONE claimed there were 14 players who were against Terry. In fact the article even went on to say that players like Richo & Bowden IN THIS MEETING were sticking up for Wallace.
:wallywink

exactly ;D

Predictable reactions from the usual suspects here.
Don't suppose anyone has thought this through rather than reacting? There are quite a few possible scenarios behind this story which may or may not be true.
Oh and why should some one's looks have anything to do with what is written by that person?

After reading Caros article a few times... The only real loser to come out of this sordid episode is Newman.
Is Newman a Leader or a naive people pleaser?
Lets see if his remorse for his actions can result in a good performance on Saturday. He needs a big game.
Agree with Stripes...I have egg on my face over Bowden.Who would of thought that Johnson,King &Simmo were devils in disguise
-
What I will say about Newman is on the weekend Tredrea showed leadership and took his team by the horns and was marshalling and leading his team.
I didn't notice anyone from Richmond attempting anything.
In the last 10 minutes that is, and that is when someone 'Newman' really needed to satnd up as an onfeild leader, not player as such.
-
Johnson - u cancerous hack - stuff off !!!!
Newman - No balls - No opinion - NFI! - Continuing the legacy of insipid leaders.
Bowden - surprised me.

the look on Treadrea's face when he kicked the sealer racing back up the backline was inspriring stuff
NOW THATS A LEADER

That is close enough to what I s to my son as we watched our lead dribble away to us being behind in those last 10 minutes.
You could just feel it happening, and our team did bugger all to stop it.
And who was on Tredrea or as they called him there Wazza. He needed stopping but it didn't happen.
