Title: Who are the most important players at our club?
Post by: Stripes on May 25, 2009, 03:34:24 PM
If you had to pick only 10 players, who would be the most important to the club and why?

Sorry had a few moments to kill

What an awesome thread for this stage of our club.

1. Cotchin (Future Captain)
2. Deledio (Future Captain)
3. Moore (Backman general)
4. Rance (10 years of great football)
5. Graham (Many years of being a better than average ruckman)
6. Riewoldt (Only key position forward)
7. Nahas (Only small forward with pace, skill and tackling ability)
8. McGuane (Best 2nd defender)
9. Vickery (The potetal for a backup ruckman versitile forward for 10 years)
10. Foley (Young, gets hands on ball, works harder than anyone at training, leader)

1 - Richo - Heart and soul can teach passion to the yougsters, good player to boot.
2 - Cuz - All class something we have lacked, another to teach the youngsters.
3 - Cotchin - Do I really need to elaborate!
4 - Moore - Something to build the backline around. (Just remember this guy was gone as far as all the experts were concerned).
5 - Rance - Balls and skill, future leadership group material.
6 - Vickery - Big mobile raw talent, will take some time but looks the goods to me.
7 - Graham - I will swallow my pride, Gus has definately made a fool of me.
8 - Nahas - Shear determination and skill will get him through to a fruitful career, regardless of size.
9 - Deledio - Class act, letting me down atm only because I have huge expectations of him ( Maybe some r right and a new voice will take him that next step).
10 - Tambling - Line ball over Jack, just feel he can be a very important part of this team for many years.

Don't have time to do a list, but Jackson would be very close to mine at the moment.

I think he'd be close to the only player you'd be a little bit nervous about matching up on because he seems to be the only bloke willing to run through them at the moment.

Pretty much as the others said above, its all about the youth now.

Only voted 9 as I left a vote reserved for Mr Fanta Pants.

I must be going blind, couldn't find Jackson in the list.

I'll go out on a limb (way out, I know) and say that Jacko has to be a dark horse for a future leader at the club.

He'd be paying long odds I believe but I'd honestly have a dip at that, very very very good dark horse Muscles, well said.

1 Cotchin - class and possible future leader
2 Deledio - class
3 Moore - steady rock down back - just wish he kicked the goals when he makes great position ie Saints last year and a few times this year
4 McGuane - still underrated by opposition clubs...but a solid defender
5 Riewoldt - we need a fwd and it is too early to make a call on Post
6 Foley - terrier mid
7 Rance - quality defender
8 Tambling - young mid coming through
9 Nahas - quality small fwd with pressure
10 Vickery - quality tall

That was my basis - the most important players are the ones who need to move on to other pursuits.

Sorry I left out Jackson.  :(

I guess its a question of whether you value marketability as the greatest importance to the club, onfield consistency, leadership or onfield brilliance.

Cousins, Richo and Brown are the money men of the team who are the public face and often voice (particularly given their media jobs) of the club. Cousins brought in a lazy one million to the club before he even played a game. Richo has been one of the most loved personalities in football circles - last years Brownlow revealed that clearly.

If you value players who don't go missing and whose low and high points are not far away from each other week in week out then we have very few. Tuck, Newman, Foley and Moore would be my choices here though you could probably argue that even some of these have gone missing at times this year.

Leadership is in drought proportions at our club at the moment and realistically for years. Newman is our captain but after the debarcle of last week his stocks are low. Johnson never had the on field presence and even players such as Richo, Bowden, Simmonds and Brown do not have the selfless attitude and onfield mental strength to lead us out of losing positions. My leaders are therefore 'hopeful' and include Cotchin, Riewoldt, Foley and Lids but if someone can stand up out of the younger brigade it would do our club wonders.

Onfield brilliance is a flash in the pan occurance and, IMHO, means nothing unless the across the board team consistency is there. We have a few players who can make you stand up in our team including Nahas, Riewoldt, Cotchin, Lids, Foley, Brown and Morton.

So what really is the most important criteria to choose a players importance?

the club is the most important and everyone has a price and is tradeable and expendable

Sounds good in theory TT but you need a core group to base a team around or everything fails apart.

i know, what u mean

we wont reallyknow til a caretaker coach takes over in a wek or 2, after terry is gone and players start playing so to speak then we can have a clearer picture on who we keep and let go

we cant judge this group under waLLet bec they dont give a stuff about playing for him and hate his game plan

Sorry but can't vote if there's no Jackson. He's obviously considered leadership material as well when you look at the number of times Dan's been asked to do the media 'grab' over the past few weeks.

Just on leadership, young Rance is way ahead of Deledio in my estimation. I'm sure WP would agree too after hearing Alex speak last Saturday. ;)

That's a shame WP, the opinion of all around me who heard Alex was 'future leader'. :)
