Brownlow form guide, club by club
Will Brodie
September 21, 2011
The Brownlow Medal is not just about who walks away with Charlie on the night. What about the players who deserve to be the top vote-winner at your club? Here's our verdict on the players who will be awarded the most votes, club-by-club*, along with some of the roughies who could catch the bookies napping.
RICHMOND
Don't think twice:
Smooth-moving distributor Trent Cotchin is a strong chance to reap the maximum in five matches, more than enough in a team that won eight games
Contenders:
At Richmond, it's all about the gun midfielders, Cotchin, Brett Deledio, and Dustin Martin. Perennial Tigers vote-leader Deledio was consistent, but perhaps not as dynamic as Cotchin. Martin had some quiet games between star turns on the ball and up forward. Others who are a chance to poll are lively forward Robin Nahas; and polished recruit Bachar Houli, who was fourth in the club's best and fairest.
2010: Brett Deledio, Jack Riewoldt 7; Dustin Martin 6; Shane Tuck 4.
Odds: Dustin Martin $1.80; Trent Cotchin $1.90; Brett Deledio $15.00; Robin Nahas $41.00; Bachar Houli $51.00

Apart from Richo a couple of years ago we never poll well. Even in games we win the opposition always seems to get some of the votes. Not expecting much

true story.
-
Maybe he'll go top 5 ::)

RICHMOND
Last winner: Ian Stewart (1971)
Season stats: The Tigers went from six wins in 2010 to eight and a draw this time around. The steady improvement continued under Damien Hardwick. Brett Deledio, Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin, Bachar Houli, Robin Nahas, Nathan Foley, Ty Vickery and Jack Riewoldt didn't miss a match.
Best chance: The bookies are keeping Trent Cotchin safe in betting but Dustin Martin's game-breaking style gives him the edge among the men from Punt Road. He kicks goals, roosts the ball and dishes out more 'don't argues' than a strict parent. Get on him in 2012.
Outside hope: Houli has been a hit since his crossed from Windy Hill. He hangs onto the ball for a while so the umpires are sure to realise it's him in possession. Could surprise a few.

The umps hate us, they prove that week after week during the season.
Brownlow votes are rare as hens teeth, Richo only got votes because he finally became as lovable to the media as he was to Tiger fans.
-
We've got no chance so who cares
I think I'll put on the DVD of the dreamtime game instead of watching the brownlow ;D
-
desperate attempt to drum up interest, the usual darlings will feature from the usual darling clubs. I would rather watch 70's sunday Television, like , the spoken word with Doctor Bob Santa Maria.... just wake me from my coma afterwards...
-
Triple Brownlow medalist Bob Skilton will be presenting the medal to the winner this year. Sounds like Judd or Goodes will be the winner.

Richmond
D. Martin $1.75
T. Cotchin $1.90
B. Deledio $15
Not Quoted $21
R. Nahas $51
B. Houli $51
MUNSIE SAYS: Equal biggest market mover of any team, Dustin Martin has been backed from $2.75 into $1.75. Initial favourite Trent Cotchin has drifted from $1.70 to $1.90.
QUINN'S BET: Cotchin has been more consistent but Martin starred in the games the Tigers won.

And Buckthorns coin is on Cotchin @ $1.90 :thumbsup

Too true ! Happens in the media votes every week too.
-
I still remember us beating Port in 08. Only ended up winning by 4 points but we were the better side all day and they werent in it til the last 5 minutes. from memory it was Tuck who got 3 votes and two Port players got the 1 and 2. Bowdo had 40 touches, Cleve kicked 6 and Morton kicked 5. they all missed out....
-
Going through the games I think Cotch will just pip Dusty with Robbie Nahas next.
R1: Jack make get a vote for his 6 goals.
R2: Milne will get the 3. Lids and Grigg could share the 2 and 1.
R5: Dusty should be a certain 3. Jack and Nahas may get a vote.
R6: Nahas and Dusty should get votes. Luke Power could get the 3 though (didn't he kick 4 goals?)
R7: Out of Cotch, Nahas and maybe Lids & Houli.
R9: Should be a certain 3 for Cotch. Rance and Lids for the minors.
R10: We were crap but it was still a close game. Houli or Foley may get a vote.
R12: Houli could get a vote.
R13: Dusty 3 votes and Cotch 2.
R14: Foley might get a vote
R17: Like the Port game. Nahas may get a vote.
R21: Houli 3, Cotch 2 and maybe Lids 1.
R22: Dusty, Axel and Tucky to share the votes. The umps will probably give Sylvia the 3 though.
R23: Cotch a certain 3.
R24: A narrow loss so Nahas or Dusty may get a vote(s).

Why worry about anything else. We all know how this count will pan out and who the AFL and umpires pet is. It's all about Bec and motherhood and how wonderful she looks in her Mariannah Hardwick and every other WAG and of course Brynne Edelsten flashing her FF cups.
It's no longer about the player. What is this red carpet BS they have 30 mins before the count. SUre we get an eyeful but that has got nothing to do about footy.

RICHMOND
The contenders: Tough and talented midfielder Trent Cotchin won Richmond's best and fairest earlier in September, and he is likely to be the Tigers leading vote-getter. Cotchin enjoyed his best season since joining the Tigers in the 2007 national draft. He played in all of Richmond's home and away matches, averaged 24 disposals per game, and booted 18 goals. Dashing defender Brett Deledio, who was runner-up in the best and fairest, is also sure to poll a few votes.
Ineligible: Daniel Jackson, Jake King, Luke McGuane, Alex Rance, Tyrone Vickery
Lock: Jack Riewoldt should get two or three votes for his six-goal performance against Carlton in round one, which almost snatched an upset win for the Tigers. Dustin Martin will surely get three votes for his 33 possessions and four goals against North Melbourne in round five, while Trent Cotchin is certain to claim some of the votes awarded after Richmond's victory over Essendon in the Dreamtime at the 'G match. On that night, Cotchin gathered 29 disposals, (15 of which were contested) had eight clearances and booted the ball inside 50 eight times.
Club leading vote-winner (Betfair odds): Dustin Martin ($1.92)

Swan will be favourite now as he racked up 30+ possie games for the rest of the H/A season.
Btw in a couple of years Cotch will win a Brownlow. A few more wins and he would've been right up near the top.
Edit: Emma is a smart cookie cranny :thumbsup.

Cotchy will win one ,one day.
Just a matter of which year.

Dal Santo the smokey from here. Saints came home strong and he was their best player.
However given the big deal the AFL made about three-peating Judd could probably get 3 votes in every game from now on and steal it.
-
What a joke the Brownlow has become :'( :'(
Umpires obviously seduced by stats
I mean seriously
Dal Santo currently 2nd & Priddis equal 4th ..what the :banghead :-\
The only positive is that I reckon Cotch will one day win one of these things if we can start winning consistently

One we stop having bad quarters and halves then the umps won't be able to take votes off us when we win.
Congrats to Dane Swan. 34 is the highest number of votes ever in the 3-2-1 voting system.
-
that was to make up for last season - Swanny was nowhere near the level this year he was at last year.
-
lol why did you all watch this crap. You know it was gonna be another fairytale and you know our club is hated. Soon we will give them real reasons to hate us again.

2 years in a row the umps have given votes playing catch up for the previous year.
Mitchell will win in a canter next year.

Melbourne as a team got more votes than us yet we finished above them. Go figure. We have always been screwed at the Brownlow night. For me the Jack Dyer award means far more

Well, I didn't watch a second of the Brown-nose coverage last night, figuring it's just the same old wankers every year. Coming on here this morning to see who polled the best for the Tigers only confirms that I didn't miss anything :sleep

I am pleased that Dane Swan won the Brownlow last night.
BUT
All football fans loathe the umpires for their poor decision making and on field dramatics, but we give them the task of voting for the so-called best player of the year and give God-like status to the player voted for by these umpires.
Eddie Betts, a small forward who gets his own footy and kicks lots of hard earned goals polled 2 votes in a game that he kicked 8 goals in this year. The umpires' boyfriend, Chris Judd, polled the 3 votes in that game. During the same round Steven Milne, another small forward who wins his own footy, also kicked 8 goals but he got the 3 votes.
Ablett gets 3 votes in games in which his side was thrashed and players from the winning side have dominated.
I would love someone like Mike Sheahan to go through the votes and game videos to investigate whether particular umpires are ALWAYS giving the same players the votes.
Judd winning it last year was a disgrace and I am sure that many umpires are embarrassed by the lack of votes for magnificent players who had a magnificent season.

Yep. VB tore it up. :lol

IMO it's time the AFL employed a committee to vote alongside the umpires.
Ex premiership players and brownlow winners should be voting with the umpires. Just as umpiring decisions are made and missed so are acts of brilliance on the field. Ablett, Judd and now Swan have all won it in years where they were below their best every year, with other players having better years.
It was obvious that the umpires were looking to give Swan votes where they could because they missed him last year when he probably should have won it. Same with Ablett 2 years ago, and Judd is always found.
Time that the like of Matthews, Roos, Harvey, Williams give 50% of the votes along with the umpires 50%
-
Not won a brownlow since 1971, longest drought of any teams. Sums up umpires pretty well
