Victorian clubs handed AFL funding for academies

AFL.com.au
February 3, 2016

VICTORIAN clubs have been given seed funding to establish club-branded academies in allocated areas throughout Victoria and the Northern Territory in a radical plan to attract youngsters from non-traditional football backgrounds to the game.

Under the plan unveiled to clubs on Tuesday, they will be given the chance to invest in specific regions to attract youngsters from diverse backgrounds and indigenous heritage to play AFL and develop elite talent within those areas.

The plan is part of an AFL push to ensure the game continues to attract and foster the development of players regardless of their background or location.

For example, reigning premiers Hawthorn have been allocated the eastern Whitehorse region in Melbourne, along with Gippsland local government areas and Katherine in the Northern Territory, while North Melbourne has been given the Wyndham and western Melbourne areas.

Those clubs will set up 'Next Generation' AFL Academies for boys and girls aged 11-18 using club brands with the aiming of increasing the talent pool.

Clubs will identify and attract talented youngsters into regional squads to prepare them for the talent pathway program that players start at 16.

Each club's investment in the academies will sit outside the football department cap.

Football operations boss Mark Evans said the AFL was determined to make sure people who might not have been raised with a traditional football background feel welcome to play the game and are attracted to the AFL.

"We will use the expertise, resources and brand power of clubs out in regional communities to help find and attract and develop young talent, boys and girls, all cultures, all backgrounds," Evans said.

"If clubs can help attract and develop some talent that would be under-represented and not normally find its way into the AFL pathway then they will have the ability to receive some incentive for that similar to the bidding system used for the northern academies."

If a club develops a young Australian from an Asian or African background and wants to draft them, then they will receive a discount on a basis similar to the current bidding system. Clubs will be able to apply for draft discounts on other youngsters from non-English speaking backgrounds if they develop the player in a similar manner.

For indigenous players from under-represented areas such as the Pilbara, incentives will also exist for clubs to develop and nurture talent in those areas.

The AFL believes the draft bidding system will stop clubs from trying to exploit the system by enticing talent to move into their areas.

Evans said clubs intending to have team in the new national women's competition should ensure girls are part of the academy programs.

The clubs were consulted in the past 12 months and are understood to have accepted the allocation in general terms.

"The allocation of regions has been based on a range of factors – aligning to existing under-18 talent regions, minimising player travel and access issues, aligning AFL clubs to current or historical relationships with certain communities and balanced access to 5-18 year-olds from diverse backgrounds," Evans said.

The AFL will meet with South Australian and West Australian clubs regarding the allocating of regions in those states, and is in the process of finalising the allocation of regions in Tasmania.

Melbourne has a very lucrative sponsorship deal with NT govt, they were  always getting part of the NT

Richmond eyes regional football Academy

richmondfc.com.au
February 3, 2016 4:06 PM

Richmond will build further on the connection the Korin Gamadji Institute (KGI) has created with regional Victorian Aboriginal communities, with the establishment of the Next Generation Academy Program.

Following today’s announcement by the AFL to launch the Next Generation AFL Club Academies, Richmond will focus its Academy engagement and talent identification to the Goulburn Murray, Bendigo, Sunraysia, and North Central areas of Victoria.

The Academy will introduce the game of Australian Rules to both boys and girls, aged 5-18 years, who are from Indigenous and multicultural backgrounds, and provide pathways for coaches, umpires, and administrators.

With a strong commitment already to support emerging Indigenous leaders through the KGI, Richmond CEO, Brendon Gale, said the Academy is a chance to strengthen its community connections.

“This is an innovative approach that will drive genuine commitment from clubs to support Aboriginal and multicultural pathways, and we are excited by the opportunity,” Gale said.

“As a Club, we’re keen to engage with local communities in our regions to ensure we are adding value to existing programs, as well as creating social outcomes that go beyond football, where possible.

“Richmond has developed important relationships with many key Aboriginal communities across regional Victoria through the work of the Korin Gamadji Institute, and we look forward to this Academy further complementing that, and providing meaningful outcomes for young Aboriginal people.”

The AFL are yet to finalise the details of the talent concessions for Clubs to draft players in their Academy’s region, but it is envisaged that the model will operate similar to the system in place for the Northern State Academies.

They got the area they wanted, so why the angst?

I really don't get it.

Think the question is or should be can we; will we do this well? Thats the most important thing IMHO

You can have whatever area you like but that doesn't guarantee your academy is going to be successful

Isn't the RFC's ability to create a successful academy that produces AFL quality palyers a bit more important than which area said players come from?

Or are people going to blame the region if they get wrong?

The Mildura/Mallee region has a significant Indigenous population but, according to Michael Gleeson in The Age, most now play Soccer.

... soccer became the sport of choice for indigenous kids in the Mildura area. It is now more commonly played there than AFL, rugby league or than basketball.

Around most parts of Australia, AFL has a stranglehold on the sporting interest of indigenous communities. Where AFL doesn't dominate, NRL has its place. In most parts, basketball is strong and soccer is the less popular game. Not in the Mallee.

We've made the Sunraysia papers.

SUNRAYSIA will again be zoned to the Richmond Football Club by the Australian Football League.

This week the AFL briefed staff from Victorian-based clubs on the the final stage of establishing Next Generation AFL Club Academies this year with the objective of attracting indigenous and multicultural boys and girls who are not currently playing football or are underrepresented in the AFL.

Under the proposed zoning, Sunraysia would come under Richmond’s zone, which yielded the Tigers players such as Dale “Flea” Weightman until the late 1980s, when country zoning was abolished.

Also Essendon, Geelong, Melbourne, Hawthorn and Collingwood get access to Aboriginal communities that are committed followers and players of AFL, and Richmond get Northern Victoria where these communities play soccer.

WTF?

I don't think the indigenous blokes who come down from the NT during our winter to play footy in Nthn Victoria are coming down to play soccer.

And I really do think people are missing the fact these academies are not just for indigenous kids but other kids in the region.

Club currently has strong links with the idigneous communties in Nthn Vic. the same communities that have a equally strong link to Aussie rules footy.

It's been well reported in the press that Lovett-Murray one of the banned essendon 34, cannot coach the indigneous team in Shepparton this year.... huge indigneous talent pool in Northern Victoria and along the Murray  ;)

Revive bush zones – Tiger

By Angus Dearlove

SUNRAYSIA’S finest homegrown VFL/AFL export says he would like to see zones reintroduced by the Australian Football League.

Richmond Football Club Team of the Century member, AFL and club hall of famer, VFL premiership player and former Victorian captain Dale Weightman, who was picked up by the Tigers through their zone alignment with Sunraysia in the 1970s, says returning to the zone system that was abolished in favour of the AFL draft would be “a great idea” for places like Mildura.

“Where the national competition is now, I think places like Mildura, which is pretty isolated, get spasmodic representation of clubs going to the area every now and then,” he said.

What i take from this is that clubs will need to develop players that otherwise wouldnt play football.  Anyone already playing football for a local club etc (although could be enticed into joining the academy) would go into the draft as per normal.  Someone like Maurice Rioli Jnr for example thats already playing for a local club wouldnt necessarily be part of Essendon's platform. Or am i reading this completely wrong?  :rollin

From today's Age
Michael Gleeson
February 23, 2016

Richmond has been allocated almost all of northern Victoria along the Murray from Mildura to Albury. Indigenous players from Victoria have been under-represented in the AFL and the Murray River region, especially around Mildura, has seen soccer and basketball overtake AFL as the game of choice for indigenous youth.

----------------

It is understood that while the zones have been passed by the AFL Commission there is discretion to address anomalies such as Victoria Park (in Carlton's zone) and Glenferrie Oval (in Collingwood's zone).

The briefing paper by the AFL's head of talent education and projects,Tristan Salter, said the preference was to "provide a geographic logic in aligning AFL Clubs to regions where possible, and to consider current and historical relationships between AFL Clubs and regions where possible."

It is expected that clubs will be given the same sort of priority access that northern academies get which would mean a 20 per cent discount on draft points required to secure a nominated academy prospect.

A player is considered "multi-cultural" if they were born overseas or one of their parents was born overseas.

A player could also be considered multi-cultural if English was not spoken at home and the player was not already playing in established competitions. Christian Petracca was an example where despite the fact his mother is Italian and Italian is spoken at home, he would not be considered a multi-cultural academy prospect as he was already in elite pathways and not a convert to the game.

The shifting composition of migration in Australia represented a confronting challenge for the AFL, which has had difficulty in attracting migrants from China, India and African countries to the game.

"Culturally diverse students are three times less likely to participate in Auskick and four times less likely to participate in junior football (than established migrant communities from the UK, US and New Zealand)," the paper said.

"The 'face of Australian communities' already looks vastly different from the last decade and will continue its rapid change over the next decade – the AFL must respond."

Any academy that has the Murray, goulburn valley and ovens and Murray leagues should provide plenty of talent. Throw in Bendigo, Ballarat and Sunraysia for good measure and we should have an adequate talent pool for sure.

Given Mildura was our old country zone and a number of old Tiges came from Sunraysia, hopefully we have a fair few connections at grassroots level to spot athletically talented indigenous kids who have played Aussie Rules amongst other sports growing up so they have the basic skills but are now registered as playing another sport to fit the criteria for these academy zones.

As part of the Richmond Academy, the Club put on speed, agility and football skill activities in Swan Hill and Shepparton.

Over 80 participants, aged 11 to 15 years of age, took part in Monday’s session at Swan Hill Football Netball Club.

Bendigo Pioneer and Tyntynder talent Kayle Kirby was on hand to help participants in a kicking session.

On Tuesday the Club travelled south-east to Mooroopna Recreation Reserve, where local talent and Richmond youngster Nathan Drummond took skills sessions.

The Richmond Academy will introduce the game of Australian Rules to both boys and girls, aged 5 to 18 years, who are from Indigenous and multicultural backgrounds, and provide pathways for coaches and administrators.

The Tigers area comprises the Goulburn Murray, Bendigo, Sunraysia and North Central regions – the Murray Bushrangers and Bendigo Pioneers catchments.

The warmer weather has seen the return of the Reconciliation Cup after it was cancelled earlier this year due to wet weather.

The event has been rescheduled for next Wednesday (November 9) to be held at Victoria Park, Echuca.

The Richmond Tigers will still be supporting the event, with Indigenous Community Relations Officer Luke Murray and Fan Development and Academy Coordinator Todd Sigalas present on the day.

The important football and netball day brings together non-Indigenous and Indigenous communities through a mutual enjoyment of sport.

A Winmar in Tigers' sights at next generation academy

AFL.com.au
15 November 2016

RICHMOND is starting to screen players - some as young as 11 - as part of the club's next generation academy program.

Sixteen youngsters, with indigenous and multicultural backgrounds, were invited to the Tigers' testing day at Punt Road Oval on Saturday.

The players ranging from 11-17 years of age, including Raman Winmar (whose mother's cousin is AFL great Nicky Winmar), were put through their paces in fitness and skills testing, and they received education on strength and mobility programs and dietary needs.

Richmond's zone includes the Goulburn Murray, Bendigo, Sunraysia, and North Central areas of Victoria, with the club to identify, develop and nominate underrepresented players for drafting in its nominated region.

The Tigers hope they can develop future talent, and the academy program is designed to assist its talent-identification process.

Richmond football talent manager Dan Richardson said although it was still early days, the club was excited by the talent coming through the program.

"The Academy is firstly about participation and encouraging more kids, particularly indigenous and multicultural kids, to play the game," Richardson said.

"Then the flow on from that is there's talent outcomes for us, as well. We want to see these kids pull on a Richmond jumper at some stage, if they can."

Several of the participants were selected based on their performances at the club's 'Come and Try' talent days in Swan Hill and Shepparton in September.

Others came at the suggestion of their nominated TAC Cup clubs – the Murray Bushrangers and Bendigo Pioneers.

The Tigers have nominated exciting forward and Pioneers prospect Kayle Kirby as one of five players they will be able to automatically list as category B rookies this year under the new indigenous and multicultural academies, should he not be selected in the national or rookie drafts.

Along with the Draft Combine-style testing, including sprint, endurance and jumping tests, the players were given a tour of the club's facilities and received a physical competence screening.

The players will be tested again in January, which will give the Tigers a chance to monitor their progress against previous results.

Winmar, 16, who hails from Shepparton, said it was great to get a glimpse into what life would be like at an AFL club.

He hopes to one day follow in the footsteps of his famous 'uncle', Nicky, who played 251 games for the Saints and the Western Bulldogs.

"I look up to him and often think to myself, I would love to make it where he's made it," Winmar said.

Raman Winmar plays for the Rumbalara Football Club in the Murray Football League. The indigenous Australian football club is affiliated with the Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-Operative.

Winmar even got the opportunity to play senior football at Rumbulara in 2016, which is captain/coached by former Essendon player Nathan Lovett-Murray.

Winmar, who has also shown talent in basketball, said playing senior football was a great chance for him to prove himself.

"I was a bit nervous at first but the older boys told me to keep my head up and that helped me get on with it," Winmar said.

Sudanese-born Richmond rookie Mabior Chol, who was a member of the Brisbane Lions academy before joining the Tigers with pick No.30 in last year's rookie draft, said the program would be invaluable for the young players.

"What I did with the Lions' academy helped me a lot with my knowledge of the game and it gave me more opportunity to be who I am right now," Chol said.

"The Tigers' Academy is a good opportunity for these boys to develop and by having one-on-one coaching available that will help them a lot too."

Tigers punt on Johnson

by Riverine Herald
December 02, 2016

Echuca's Hakeem Johnson was one of 11 footballers from the Goulburn Valley region who attended an academy screening day run by the Richmond Football Club on November 12.

The AFL club hosted the event at its Punt Road oval headquarters as part of its Next Generation Academy Program, which has actively engaged in a number of sporting events within the Indigenous community including Echuca’s Reconciliation Cup Day.

Johnson, 15, played the 2016 season for North Bendigo in the under 16s and was selected in this year’s under-15 Victoria-Tasmania kickstart squad to play in a tournament during the national Indigenous and multicultural championships in April.

Sixteen footballers aged 11-17 were selected for the screening day and were chosen based on their performances at the Richmond academy come and try talent days during September in Swan Hill and Shepparton, identified through the Murray Bushrangers or Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup or nominated by their community.

Players were exposed to the Tigers’ elite sporting environment and completed a number of high performance testing activities which focused on speed, agility, vertical jump and endurance through a beep test.

Johnson and the other participants also received a tour of the club, a personal identity session, a lesson on nutrition and strength and mobility programming, and enjoyed basic skill training in kicking and ball handling.

Richmond’s football talent general manager Dan Richardson was eager to see the academy program grow and engage more participants over time.

‘‘We hope to provide significant opportunities to both boys and girls who are not currently playing football or are under-represented at the competition’s highest level,’’ he said.

Players will return to the club in January, having built on their skills and progressed as young players.

Tiger hunt on

RICHMOND footballer Nathan Drummond hopes the club’s Next Generation Academy can unearth some Sunraysia talent for the Tigers.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who hails from Mooroopna in Richmond’s zone, compared the academy to those already set up for clubs in the northern states.

”We see clubs like the Giants and the swans have zone academies and they have seen some good players out of that,” he said.

The AFL is reviewing the contentious northern states academies and multicultural and Indigenous academies, seeking club input into how the academies should operate, including the rules for player eligibility and bidding at the draft.

The AFL has appointed former Carlton skipper and ex-Blues football operations chief Andrew McKay to review both the northern states academies and Next Generation Academies (NGA) for multicultural and Indigenous players that were established for the 14 clubs in traditional football states and which have been a source of friction.

The review - which AFL sources said would be "open-ended" - follows concern about how players have been tied to clubs, such as Collingwood gaining Isaac Quaynor and North's access to Tasmanian Tarryn Thomas, when those NGA recruits and others were already highly-accomplished youngsters in the elite squads and touted as certain AFL players when they were allocated via zones.

Aside from eligibility, the other main concern raised about the northern and multicultural and Indigenous academies has been the price that clubs have paid for high-value recruits, such as Sydney's Nick Blakey, Quaynor and Thomas - all of whom attracted bids within the first round of the draft, but whose clubs still traded out their first pick.

THE AFL has announced an $18 million, three-year boost for Victorian country football.

On Tuesday, the League revealed a significant chunk of the funding would flow from the abolishment of AFL Victoria affiliation fees, saving country clubs $3.22 million a year.

Umpire registration fees will also be scrapped, while the cost of club apparel will be reduced considerably.

As part of the arrangement, $950,000 will be made available to help club volunteers through digital and in-person support with administration, policy and breaches involving safeguarding children, social media and vilification.

Almost $2 million will also be dedicated to a strategic community investment fund and village hubs, which will assist club needs and work towards aligning schools with community and AFL clubs.

The Victorian state government will provide almost $1 million over the three-year period.

The AFL has changed its Next Generation Academy rules for top-end talent

The AFL will put into place a 'protected' zone for NGA players in the first 20 picks of the draft.

It means from 2021 Academy players, such as Ugle-Hagan with the Bulldogs and Lachie Jones for Port Adelaide this year, who attract bids in the first 20 picks will fall into the open pool with their NGA clubs not being able to match the bids.

Under the revised rules, players who attract bids in the 20-40 range will have to be matched under usual Academy rules while all players selected from pick No.41 onwards can be matched by their club using the next available selection.

The phase out of the NGA program will continue in 2022, with bids on nominated NGA prospects only able to be matched from pick 41 onwards.

Battle lines could be drawn between two powerhouse Melbourne clubs ahead of the AFL Draft this year over a prospect who is showing “unbelievable” traits in the NAB League. Bendigo Pioneers forward Nyawi Moore is in the unique position of being a father-son prospect for Essendon as well as a Next Generation Academy member for Richmond.

The son of former Bombers star Nathan Lovett-Murray, Moore has shown no shortage of “tricks” for the Pioneers this season since training at Tullamarine over pre-season. The 18-year-old had 14 disposals against Murray Bushrangers in the NAB League last weekend, but 10 of those came during an eye-catching third quarter.

Eggy was the first from our NGA.

Biggie was drafted by us but he originally belonged to St Kilda's NGA.

The northern state clubs like the Swans have academies that are more about directing NSW & Qld athletic/sporty kids into playing AFL. It's not just kids from indigenous or new migrant backgrounds. IIRC, the NGAs were a means to give the non-northern state clubs academy zones. Ours is across northern Victoria.

AFL's 'first Mexican' wants more migration to regional areas as he shows the locals how to kick a footy

ABC South West Vic
By Daniel Miles
7 July 2021

From Mexico to the MCG, then the bush, Edgar Guerrero is trying to use his unique journey to entice other migrants to move to country Victoria.

Key points:
* There are 7.6 million migrants living in Australia according to the latest official figures
* A pilot program helping migrants move to western Victoria is being replicated along the south-west coast
* Migrant groups say more needs to be done help families move to the country

The Mexico City native came to Australia in 2012 with his wife Liz, settling in into a comparatively subdued city life in Melbourne while working various jobs and studying at university.

A successful scholarship application saw him embedded with the Richmond Tigers during their successful AFL Premiership tilt in 2019, something Mr Guerrero said was a transformative experience.

Now, like many of the Richmond faithful, Edgar Guerrero bleeds yellow and black.

"I'm Mexican, and I don't like soccer anywhere near the way I like AFL now," Mr Guerrero said.

The Tigers' dominant Grand Final win cemented Mr Guerrero's love for Australia's national game, putting him on a new path.

"It was an unreal experience, everyone was just so happy and hugging you even if they didn't know your name because you're part of the team," he said.

Edgar Guerrero (middle) won a coaching scholarship that saw him work with the Richmond Tigers.

Mr Guerrero works for the AFL in the team's western district offices in Warrnambool, three hours south-west of Melbourne.

"I'm going to schools to promote the game [AFL], teach basic skills to kids, which is something really different" he said.

"I think it's different for the kids. I'm probably the first Mexican to teach Aussie kids how to kick a footy."

Cowley has kicked 21 goals in his last 5 games playing up forward (HF/FP) for Tongala's senior side in the Murray Football League including 6 goals in his last start before lockdown paused the season.

Cowley’s six helps Tongala continue its unbeaten run

A six-goal haul from 17-year old Mackenzie Cowley over the weekend propelled the Blues to a 55-point win over Barooga, extending their unbeaten streak in the Murray Football League for the 12th straight week.

But as it did against Numurkah the previous round, Tongala pulled away with a 13-goal to five second half thanks to Cowley's six goals and two each to Talbot Varcoe and Anthony Dennis.

Tonny's teen talent ignites

Tongala’s two youngest players — Mackenzie Cowley and Harley Reid — were the inspirations behind their team’s Murray League unbeaten season streak extending into a 12th week on Saturday.

Livewire small man Cowley booted six goals in a dominating best on ground display while Reid starred in a forward/wing role as Tongala rallied in the second half to avoid what would have been a major upset against Barooga at Barooga.

The two sides were locked on 2.6 apiece at halftime but, inspired by 17-year-old Cowley and 16-year-old Reid, Tongala rallied to kick 13 second half goals to the home team’s five to run out winners by 55 points to continue its unbeaten season.

Unfair to compare us to the Northern clubs who've had academies up and running  for over a decade, access to entire states and are not just limited to players with ethnic or indigenous backgrounds...and pretty sure we could've had Simpkin & Ratugolea in the first year of the academies I think but they didn't bring in the bidding system until the second year...and of course now with finally some decent prospects on the horizon , they've changed the rules again... :shh

Article from 2 months ago but it mentions another one of our NGA boys Manny Laulu who will be available in the 2023 draft.

The Bushrangers’ under-16 outfit will be looking to keep the momentum going today.

The youngsters enjoyed a 13-point triumph over Bendigo Pioneers last week and will be hunting for back-to-back wins when they take on Gippsland Power.

Mooroopna’s Coby James and Shepparton Swans’ Manny Laulu shone in the win, while Shepparton United’s Joeve Cooper kicked a goal.

Richmond NGA product at home with Tigers' VFL program

Korin Gamadji Institute and Richmond Next Generation Academy alumni Ashtyn Atkinson says the Club's programming throughout his youth has helped him to feel equipped for the rigours of football in Melbourne.

Ashtyn Atkinson (left) with fellow KGI alumni Billy Cooper.

Ashtyn Atkinson knows exactly what he is getting into when he arrives at a Richmond VFL pre-season session, with the youngster not daunted by the tall task of training with an AFL-aligned team for the first time.

Punt Road Oval is a far cry from Atkinson’s home club, the Indigenous-led Rumbalara FC in Shepparton, but his experiences with Richmond’s Next Generation Academy and Korin Gamadji Institute as a youth are holding him in good stead to reach his football potential.

“I walk into the doors (at the Swinburne Centre), and it is a familiar environment; it means I am not walking into something that is unknown. I could literally walk upstairs at the Club, and I would know everyone,” Atkinson explained.

“Having that really helps. Melbourne is so different from Shepparton, but the NGA camps we (Indigenous and multicultural talented underaged footballers from within the Club’s region) do from 14-15 help make coming here so much easier.

“I’m in the deep end, but it is worth it, and I am enjoying my new job here and having a crack at making the VFL and living in Melbourne.”

Atkinson, an 18-year-old Yorta Yorta man, who played 11 games for the Murray Bushrangers in the NAB League across the last two seasons, gained prior exposure to the Club’s facilities and learned about high performance and standards since first being identified for the Academy back in 2018.

The wingman says the trips with Richmond to Melbourne also gave him an early grasp of what life in the city could look like.

“It is so different to Shepparton here, even the traffic and catching the trams. It is a bit to take in, but the camps definitely help,” he said.

“When you are a kid from the country, you only really see facilities like Punt Road when you drive past, so for Richmond to let us come in was something I thought was unreal.”

The NGA Program was also a stepping stone for a then 15-year-old Atkinson to attend the KGI’s Richmond Emerging Aboriginal Leadership (REAL) camp.

“The KGI Camp came about through my links with the NGA and was like the best week ever- I think we all grew so much in ways we did not even imagine,” he said.

“Just being around like-minded people from all over the state was something different. I only knew two people coming in, but after the end, I had made some real connections.

“Lots of players from ‘Rumba’ and Shepparton have gone through and done it now as well- I remember mum and dad had to convince me to do it, and I am so glad I gave it a chance, and I tell them all the same.”

Atkinson, already an outstanding Indigenous leader has found employment working for First Nations company Wanyara, travelling to schools and businesses teaching Indigenous culture through dance, arts, and games.

He will continue trying his luck for the Tigers VFL Program and is also set to align himself with a suburban Melbourne club, cementing his move.

Still just a budding young footballer, Atkinson has already taken huge steps as a young Indigenous man.

I can’t believe we requests this region. It’s as barren as the Sahara

You need at least one metro zone or what's the point? Complete waste of time now under the new rules anyway.  :shh

We requested this dud region? Surely not. Then again...

New rules Dio as in others can trade for them if they are a top pick?  Was that it as I can't recall as the commie bastards change their mind all the time.

JAMARRA Ugle-Hagan will be the last of his kind, with the AFL changing its Next Generation Academy rules to disallow clubs having access to top talents under the program.

As first revealed by AFL.com.au in August, the AFL will put into place a 'protected' zone for NGA players in the first 20 picks of the draft.

The changes have come into place after an explosion of players, such as the potential No.1 pick Ugle-Hagan this year, joining clubs under the NGA rules in recent years, with Isaac Quaynor at Collingwood and Tarryn Thomas at North Melbourne other first-round selection under the Academies.

Clubs will be investing far less into the programs in coming years as a result of COVID-19s financial toll on the competition but the remaining links of the NGA rules allow for late prospects to still make their way onto an AFL lists through the assistance of the NGA scheme.

From Tonga to Tigerland 🙌

A well-earned opportunity for Richmond NGA graduate Pala Kuma.

NGA's Pala Kuma earns VFL contract

Richmond Next Generation Academy graduate Pala Kuma has taken the next step in his football career, signing a contract with the Club's VFL side.

It's an exciting progression for the 19-year-old who grew up in Tonga, and the culmination of "years of hard work".

"I'm relieved and happy...I'm keen for the season," Kuma said.

"We were all sitting in the team meeting and I didn't have a clue what was going on... It was announced that a few boys had signed, and to my surprise, I was one of them.

Graduating through Richmond's NGA program, Pala Kuma last week was awarded a contract with Richmond VFL for the 2024 season.

"(My family) was so happy. I started playing footy in 2018 so they were so happy to see how far I've come and the hard work I've put in finally paying off."

The explosive shutdown defender, who has a rugby background, joined Richmond's NGA in 2018 when he moved to Australia as a 13-year-old.

From there, he spent time with the Tigers' VFL side and learnt from AFL mentors, while playing for the Robinvale-Euston Football Netball Club in the Sunraysia region.

Known for his tackle pressure and speed, Kuma played for the Bendigo Pioneers in the Coates Talent League last year, as he gave himself every chance of becoming a footballer.

He was a worthy recipient of the inaugural David Meade Scholarship from the Pioneers, which was awarded to a player who displayed consistency in preparation, competitiveness, diligence, relationships, and planning.

Fittingly, Kuma traveled with Richmond's AFL team to last week's Community Camp in Mildura, relishing the opportunity to head back to the region.

"I'm so happy to come back to where it all started and bring back some memories," he said.

"We flew down and did a few school visits in the area, I went to my old school and said hi.... a few Q&As with the kids and some Auskick."

Kuma is now one step closer to his ultimate goal, being signed onto an AFL list. As he works towards his dream, he hopes to inspire budding Pacific Islander footballers along the way.

"I know there's a lot of talented Pacific Islanders out there... Them seeing us in the system, hopefully that brings out their motivation to make it far in the sport of AFL," he said.

"Coming from Tonga, I think there would be a lot of kids who would be more motivated into going after a sports career.

"We don't get as much opportunity as in Australia, so to be drafted one day would be a massive outcome not only for me but for the islands as well."

Richmond's NGA program introduces the game of Australian Rules to boys and girls from 5-18 years of age who come from Indigenous and multicultural backgrounds where they may not have been exposed to the sport before.

It was the zone the AFL designated us - so no wonder it's been a complete bust. They should've at least been rotated between clubs every couple of years or so.  Waste of time now under the new rules anyway. :shh

Youngsters shine at NGA Elite program

RFC website
16 February 2024

Richmond's Next Generation Academy is underway for the year, with the first NGA Elite program of 2024 held at the Swinburne Centre earlier this month.

Participants, aged 14 to 18, included some of the best young talent across the Tigers' NGA region, hailing from Coates League teams Bendigo Pioneers and Murray Bushrangers.

In January, Richmond held a training session for select members of their NGA academy. The session attended by both boys and girls was supported by KGI and VFL players Joel Garner and Pala Kuma.

The aspiring footballers were put through their paces as they experienced a 'day in the life' of an athlete at Punt Road, gaining valuable insights into elite behaviours.

They underwent a tough training session at Tigerland, and spent time with Richmond staff, who educated the footballers about talent pathway opportunities.

All participants, who also began their Coates League pre-seasons this month, demonstrated a positive attitude and brought plenty of energy to the day.

The future is looking bright for the talented youngsters, who'll be aspiring to follow in the footsteps of recent participants such as Pala Kuma, who was recently signed to the Club's VFL side.

Budding young footballers and siblings Ellie and Tanner Armstrong, who hail from Shepparton, said they had developed important on and off-field skills throughout the three years they had been involved in the program.

Seventeen-year-old Ellie, who idolises AFLW Tiger Monique Conti, said being drafted by Richmond was her ultimate dream.

Her younger brother Tanner, who is 15 and attends boarding school at Scotch College, remarked that leadership was the biggest thing he had taken away from the program.

"We've attended all of the camps that they've put on for all the kids around our area. It's been a good opportunity that other kids don't get," he said.

"Most of all, (we) have fun and enjoy every moment."

The Richmond Academy introduces the game of Australian Rules to both boys and girls, aged 5-18 years, who are from Indigenous and multicultural backgrounds where they may not have been exposed to the sport before.

Launching in early 2016, Richmond has focused its Academy engagement and talent identification to the Goulburn Murray, Bendigo, Sunraysia, and North Central areas of Victoria.

The region includes AFL Central, Central Murray, Goulburn Murray, North East Border, Sunraysia and Wimmera Mallee – the Murray Bushrangers and Bendigo Pioneers catchments.
