Dan Butler has had an unbelievable season, and on Friday night he faces his old side once again.
Did Richmond trade the wrong small forward?

Yes
-
Why don’t we compare career records and then 2019 stats?
-
Higgins had head surgery. Aarts hadn't debuted. Castagna has been the most consistent of them all. Rioli foot issue but clearly more X factor.
Nope we traded the right guy.
The only thing that was wrong was the price we demanded for an established premiership player being kept out of the side by better performers.
-
he wouldnt have those numbers if he played for us in 2020
-
At the time, no.
In hindsight, well clearly yes.
-
its a marathon not a sprint give it time
-
Win tomorrow and we can close the thread permanently.
we won a flag without him so im happy at this stage.
-
I could never understand why he was let go, I thought he was down on confidence .
-
The only mistake we made was not trading Castagna as well.. :shh

With a player like Butler unless you watch the full games you will only see the highlights and not the full picture inclusive of the fumbles, brainfarts, deer in headlight poses etc etc
-
Let's see how Butler goes next year when he doesn't have the fresh motivation to prove himself at a new club before we make judgement. Butler's goalscoring has fallen away since the middle of this season.
Rounds 2-10 (9 matches): 21 goals
Rounds 11-EF (8 matches): 7 goals
Having said this he'll probably now kick a few against us because he's playing against his old club and teammates.
-
I'd be keeping the powder dry.
Let's look at the body of work over the next few years.
Some get a little bit ahead of themselves.
This bloke doesn't deal without injury that well.
-
Yes - should have traded Cantstandya and his stupid twirling ball run up instead
-
I don’t think so. The thing with butler and castagna is they’re aren’t the complete small forward. We should always be on the look out for someone like Breust 2012-2016 or Adelaide version of Eddie betts. I’m hoping Maurice Rioli Jr is that player.

No, As much as I liked Dan, he needed a good kick in the backside, a lot of lairizing and laziness entered into his football and he got the wake up call that he needed, nothing like being traded and staring at the abyss to get your focus back in play. He played this year to salvage a career that he was letting slip, he should thank us for our considerable size 10.

Agree

This 100% correct.

Ask me this question again in a years time. Dan is a good player who has some tricks, but after he has a good year he has a tendency to rest on his laurels for another year or two, just happy to skate through. That's why we let him go in the first place ...
Its not ability, its attitude ....
-
I always liked Dan more than Castagna. I was disappointed to see him go last year.
However, it seemed like he was on the outer at the RFC, so probably the best move for him was to go and feel valued at another club.
Plus his haircut is :chuck
Hopefully we're happy and he is sad tonight.
-
In 2017 Dan was my favourite.
In 2019 he was the worst. We made the right call and Im happy Dan has been able to turn it around and play great footy.
I dont think that wouldve happened at Richmond
-
Butler did sweet bugger all tonight against us.
-
They kept a tight leach on him tonight
-
One tainted goal.
Edwards and Bolton made him look completely C grade.
-
On Fox Footy they were talking about St.Kilda's lack of pressure anf singled out Butler giving up on chasing Cotchin out of defence......that kind of soft, lazy crap was exactly why we let him go and why it was the right move.... :shh
