Injury Report: Pre-Season, December 2020
By Richmond Media - 1 day ago

Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge provides Richmond Media with the latest injury report, brought to you by Victor Sports.

Noah Cumberland, knee

“Noah is going really well; he is now in the mid to late stages of the rehab program and running at high speed/close to sprinting. He is still doing some conditioning, but we are not trying to rush things because we have got some time on our side.

“He is progressing really well; at this stage we have not really stated a date for return to play or return to the main skills group. He has still got some things to tick off in his program in the next month or so and then we will have some information to when he will return to the group.”

Ivan Soldo, knee

“He is in a deep rehab program (with) strength training and balance training. He is a little while away from starting any kind of running given it happened so late in the season (Round 17 v Geelong).

“He is probably not looking at football until very late in the season at best, with these big guys we have got to take a very cautious approach. He is so diligent in what he does, he is in here now doing hours of rehab and special exercises.

“He is so dedicated, so we know one thing (and that is that) we are going to get a really good result with him because he will do everything he can to give himself the best chance to come back and play this year.”

Bigoa Nyuon, shoulder

“Shoulder is great, he is back to pretty much full training. His conditioning at the moment is outstanding, he has returned and done some things that we have seen in the last week which is really pleasing.

“He has taken a couple of steps forward in some areas and it’s actually really exciting to see him out here training with the boys and he is doing some good stuff at the moment, it’s really good.”

Kane Lambert, hip

“Had some hip surgery at the end of the season, only recently, and has returned to running already the last three to four weeks.

“He will probably resume with the main group in January ahead of schedule which is a great result.”

Rehab group in general

“It’s quite a small rehab group at the moment which is a great result considering how late we finished the season. Not many surgeries and not many guys needing rehabilitation.”

Introducing draftees to training

“We had Maurice Junior in today and Samson Ryan from Queensland. They came in today and did their medical screening with the doctor and the physio and then were able to come out on the track and do some skills training with the young guys.

“We are not doing a huge workload at the moment, but it was good for them to come in and do everything that was planned. We will progress and have a look at them over the next week and couple of months.”

Build up to the season for the full group

“Given we had a late finish to the year obviously with the Grand Final, and if you look at the last couple of year’s collectively we have finished later. It is really a balance of management and getting the work in before the season, it is a fine line with the game also going back to full length.

“I think for January we will be managing the guys back into the program over those couple of weeks and then into February we will ramp things up a little bit preparing for some match play towards the end of February into March for the Marsh Series.

“Overall we just have to find the right balance and we have got a little bit of a plan in place for that.”

Will be almost a write off season for Soldo next year. Might not see him at senior level until 2022.

Did Lynch have finger surgery? Reckon that hand injury affected his ball drop and goalkicking this year.

From the Australian:

Tigers’ high performance chief Peter Burge confirmed the squad was in good shape heading into the new season with only three players currently in the rehabilitation group.

Ruckman Ivan Soldo and youngster Noah Cumberland are both out with serious knee injuries, while Bachar Houli is in doubt for Round 1 with the calf problem he suffered in the Grand Final.

Gun midfielder Dion Prestia also tweaked his ankle in match simulation last week, but is expected to be back in full training next week.

It means Richmond is pleased with its fitness bill four months after taking out back-to-back premierships, in another big tick for its strength and conditioning department.

Houli, 32, pinged his calf in the opening five minutes of the Grand Final victory but bravely played out the game despite significant soreness.

That courage has come at a price over summer with the premiership veteran suffering a couple of hiccups which has put him under a cloud for the blockbuster season opener against Carlton on March 18.

Burge said it had been a frustrating preseason for Houli, while the rest of the squad was quite healthy.

“He did a fair job of it (calf injury) to be honest. In the warm up he reported a bit of an issue with it, and the first five minutes it wasn’t any good,” Burge said.

“He could barely walk on it the next day.

“But it has just been really difficult to get to each (new) stage (in the recovery) with it.

“He’s had a few hiccups along the way and we are battling a little bit to be honest, with it.

“It is very hard for us to put a time frame on it and I don’t want to rule him out for Round 1, but he has got some work to do before then.”

Prestia did some running away from the main group at training on Monday after tweaking an ankle, but it is only a minor issue, Burge said.

RICHMOND

The Tigers have had one of the smallest injury lists in recent years and that is set to continue into the early stages of 2021, with just a few players in the rehab group. Ivan Soldo and Noah Cumberland are both returning from ACL surgery in 2020, with the latter the most likely to make a return at some point during the mid-season. Veteran Bachar Houli (calf) is still recovering from an injury sustained in the Grand Final, but isn’t far away from progressing to full fitness.

Injury update: Who's in your club's medical room

Richmond's main concern heading into round one will be Dion Prestia, with the triple-premiership Tiger racing to be ready after his recent hamstring setback. Bachar Houli has all but been ruled out for the clash with Carlton after battling the calf tear he suffered in last year's Grand Final win over Geelong, while Kane Lambert didn't feature against Melbourne in last week's practice match as he overcomes off-season hip surgery. Daniel Rioli also missed it with a minor ankle concern emanating from the Tigers' intraclub the previous week, while Riley Collier-Dawkins was on the end of a heavy collision that day as well, so sat out last week but should be available this week. Ivan Soldo and Noah Cumberland are in their comebacks from their respective knee reconstructions last year, with Soldo tracking well to be available later in the season. – Callum Twomey

Midfield gun Dion Prestia is touch-and-go for round one after suffering a hamstring strain. Ruckman Ivan Soldo is likely to be absent for the entire 2021 season after hurting his ACL at the back end of last season, while youngster Noah Cumberland wont' be available until mid-year with his own knee problem.

PLAYER   INJURY   ESTIMATED RETURN
 Noah Cumberland    Knee    6-8 weeks

Early prognosis
It is a healthy list at Punt Road, with Houli the only one unlikely to play in round one with his calf injury that has lingered since last year's Grand Final. Prestia and Lynch didn't play against Collingwood in last week's AAMI Community Series game with the club being extra cautious but both are expected to play against Carlton. Soldo is making good progress from his knee reconstruction and the club believes he will play later in the season. - Callum Twomey

----------------------------------------------------------------

Trent Cotchin, illness

“Trent will full train this week. He had a bout of gastro the day before the game unfortunately and we gave him up until lunchtime on the day of the game to see if he improved.

“Trent over the weekend resumed some training and on Sunday did a pretty lengthy conditioning session, so we actually got some work into him on Sunday and he will resume normal training this week and be available for selection on Sunday."

Bachar Houli, calf

“Bachar has had a really good couple of weeks, he has strung together some really high-intensity sessions of good duration as well.

“He is resuming training with the group this week, with the aim of going back into full training this weekend (and) next week (and then) being available for round three.

“At what level we are a bit unsure at this stage, but we would like to get two full weeks of football training into Bachar given the interruptions we have had.

“It is looking really good and we can’t wait to see Bachar out there shortly.”

Balmey says Floss had a bit more surgery so he'll be a few more weeks away (Balmey at the end mentioned 5). We want to get Floss right for the second half of the season as he's an important player to us.

On Prestia, we're being cautious with the hammy. So another two weeks for Dion.

Dimma was asked about Prestia and Floss today:

Prestia

"Look, not in the short term. He's still a couple of weeks away. Look, Dion is important to the way we play, so he's had some history with hamstrings before. It's not a significant event but we've got to respect that for what it is. Once Dion is back we want him playing for the rest of the year. So we won't rush him in that format."

Vlastuin

Similar actually [to Dion]. He'll jog outside today [at training] once again. As we said, he went back in for surgery to have his knee sorted. So it's one of those ones ... it's a little bit frustrating. For us it's on the better scale if that makes sense. So he'll be jogging and so he's a few weeks away, 2-3 weeks, we're not too sure. Once we get a better indication we'll let you know."

Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge's latest injury report:

Dustin Martin, concussion, unavailable (short term)

“The incident was a marking contest; Dustin came from the field and was a little bit unsure of what had happened.

“The doctor took him down to the rooms and did the concussion assessment, and obviously a little bit more came to light after that assessment, and he was not quite right. Under the AFL protocols, we had to rule him out of the game, so he now goes through the 12-day concussion protocol, and hopefully, we see him back for the Geelong game.”

Kane Lambert, calf, unavailable (medium term)

“Kane had reported at half-time a little bit of soreness in his soleus, which is part of the calf complex muscle group in the lower leg.

“We taped him up a little bit to continue in the third quarter, but he had an incident in that third quarter where he felt a little bit of a tweak in that area, and we had to sub him out of the game.

“We have had his scans done, and it is a reasonably significant injury. On our scale, it is a medium-term issue, so he is going to be missing a couple of weeks.

“Kane has had some battles over the pre-season with hip surgery. He had a fairly compromised pre-season, but we managed to get him going… but we are possibly paying for it a little bit now. We will do the right thing and make sure we get Kane right and get him back when he is ready."

Dylan Grimes, ankle, probable

“Dylan came from the ground and was reporting a little bit of soreness around his achilles (or) ankle area (so) we were not too sure what we were dealing with. There was (only) five minutes to go in the game, so we took a bit of time with the assessment, obviously.

“Dylan is having scans later today… at this stage, it looks like an ankle impingement injury which is not too serious, but the scans will hopefully shed more light on it. We are hopeful that he will be available this week.”

Hugo Ralphsmith, ankle, questionable

“Hugo rolled his ankle during the (VFL) game… a stock standard ankle roll (and) ligament injury. At this stage, he is questionable for this week. The VFL obviously play Saturday and the AFL Friday night.

“So, it will really be how he presents on Wednesday at our main training session. We are hopeful that he has improved quite a bit by then and that some of the swelling has gone down. He is certainly a chance for this weekend, but we need a couple more days just to assess how that is going to look."

Dion Prestia, calf, unavailable (medium term)

“We were dealing with a hamstring injury which had been going really well, and then in rehab phase, he has had a small injury to his calf muscle as well, which is not great timing for us.

“His hamstring is feeling really good, but last week he had a minor issue with his calf. We have had to put him off legs for a couple of days, and he starts running again tomorrow.

“It is going to delay his return by a couple of weeks (and) we are not sure where that is going to take us to, but we will do the right thing by Dion and the team. When he is ready to go, he will be available for selection.”

Nick Vlastuin, knee, unavailable (short term)

“Nick is going really well. Nick has hit top speed at training with his straight-line running and (has) started some change of direction and agility today, and he started kicking the football today.

“It has all gone really well, and at this stage, the Geelong game next week is looking realistic for him to return, providing the next week goes smoothly.”

Ryan Garthwaite, shoulder, unavailable (medium term)

“'Garthy' has got a little bit of soft tissue damage in his shoulder and has been struggling with some basic things. But the last few days, his strength has come back quite well.

"He is able to run and do a lot of the lower body movements through rehab. He will miss this game against Werribee on the weekend, and then the VFL has a bye. We are anticipating he will be back in the side, hopefully after that."

It's going to be a tough month without Prestia and Lambert, vlastuin still 2 weeks away.

If we end up 4-6 after Brisbane do we think we can bring it home strong? I can see us winning a good 10 of the last 12 after that. If we can pinch another win against a strong side we can still push for top4.

If Grimes doesn't come up, Garthwaite is injured and Biggie I think is either still suspended or just coming back then it could finally be Miller time ...though knowing Hardwick he'll probably just move McIntosh back there... :help

Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge's latest injury update:

Richmond Injury List:

Probable

Nick Vlastuin – knee
Dustin Martin - concussion

Unavailable
Ryan Garthwaite – shoulder – Short term
Dylan Grimes – concussion – Short term
Trent Cotchin – hamstring – Medium term
Kane Lambert – calf – Medium term
Dion Prestia – calf – Medium term
Ivan Soldo – knee – Long term

Updated - May 3, 2021

---------------------------------------------------------

Dylan Grimes, concussion, unavailable (short term)

“Dylan came into the Club on Saturday and reported some symptoms that were consistent with concussion.

“The doctor naturally had to look a little bit deeper into it because there was no obvious incident from the game Friday night, but his symptoms were consistent with some kind of concussion episode.

“He now falls into the AFL concussion protocol and will miss this week’s game.

“We are being absolutely cautious with this. It is very important, the player's welfare, so Dylan will miss the game this week under the concussion protocol.”

Trent Cotchin, hamstring, unavailable (medium term)

“Late in the game, Trent came off the ground after a very high-intensity effort, and unfortunately, he has got a small hamstring strain.

“It is something we have dealt with before with Trent over time, so he is going to miss a couple of weeks and fall into the medium-term bracket.

“(He will) go through our hamstring rehab protocol, and we will make sure he is absolutely right to return.”

Nick Vlastuin, knee, probable

“Nick has had a really good last week-and-a-half of training. Today, he joined the team and did the full session, so he will go through our main training again on Wednesday, and all going well, he would be available for selection on Friday night.”

Dustin Martin, concussion, probable

“Dustin is going through the 12-day concussion protocol. We are nearing the end of that period, so he has ticked off some things with the doc, and he has got training on Wednesday.

“All going well with Dustin, we would hope that he is available for Friday night.”

Ivan Soldo, knee, unavailable, (long term)

“Ivan went and saw the surgeon a couple of weeks ago following a small arthroscope that he had. On a return visit, they decided that his medial ligament actually needed a little bit of tightening as well to help support the whole structure of the knee.

“So, he had further surgery last week to tighten that medial ligament. He is now in a brace for three weeks. In terms of his (return) timeframe, it will probably not change that too much, but we will obviously be very careful.

“It is a long-term injury and a serious injury, so we will be taking our time and being very cautious with his return from the most recent surgery.

“The goal in the short term is to get him back doing his strength program in the gym and then slowly starting a running program again in a couple of weeks. We will make an assessment from there as to what that looks like for the rest of the season.”

Yep, most likely it was Bruce's cheap shot on the back of Grimesy's head  :thumbsdown.

If Lynch had done that the media wouldn't have shut up about it and the MRO would've looked at it. One rule for some  ::).

He did look quite dazed when he first slammed into the turf head first. What I don't get is that if the AFL are serious about protecting the head of players then what's the difference between whether Bruce's cheap shot was a bump or a slam action tackle, both would be deemed as avoidable contact in my view so he should be charged accordingly given the medical outcome.

Did he break his leg? That's a long calf injury

Not that long for a calf injury

Look at Lambert,  calf injury already missed 3 games and not due back for another 3 or 4.

Thing is with calf injuries is you need to take the slow approach. Come back too early and pop it again and it 8 weeks minimum.

And in Prestia's case there was a hamstring in there to begin with,

The value is not quantified in how many games they play but what they actually bring to the club.
And both were instrumental in our drought breaking premiership and subsequent flags too.
Cotchin's value is immeasurable to anyone outside of the club in my view.

Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge provides an update in his latest injury report:

Shai Bolton, wrist, unavailable (short to medium term)

“Shai has got a little fracture in his wrist and has had a little pin put into it last night with the surgery. It will be a short to medium-term injury. We are hoping more on the shorter term.

“In a week or so's time, we will have a better idea of what that is going to look like with his recovery.”

Shane Edwards, ankle, unavailable (medium term)

“Initially, we were fearing the worst (it could have potentially been) the old syndesmosis injury, but scans were really good and showed a significant deltoid injury, the medial ligament of the ankle.

“Shane has been in a boot… he has come out of the boot in the last 24 hours and has been walking around and feeling quite good. At this stage, we are sort of saying it is a short to medium-term injury, but it is a bit of a watch this space (because) he is feeling pretty good.

“Our fingers are crossed that it is going to be more on the shorter-term end.”

Dylan Grimes, concussion, probable

“Dylan has gone through the AFL 12-day concussion protocol and at this stage is looking really good to be available for the game on the weekend.”

Ryan Garthwaite, shoulder, unavailable (medium term)

“Back a couple of weeks, Ryan had an incident (in) the Round 1 VFL game where he subluxed his shoulder.

“Initially, it progressed quite quickly, but he has had a little bit of difficulty regaining full strength in his shoulder, and we think it is related to a little bit of a nerve issue.

“It is going to require a little bit more time, so he is in a bit of a holding pattern at the moment until he can tick off that final stage of his strength (and) get full strength back so he can absorb all of the impacts and requirements of playing the game.”

Josh Caddy, available

“Josh completed our full main training session the week before (the last VFL game) and just pulled up a little bit generally sore, and we just made a late decision not to play him in that VFL game (against Werribee) just to be absolutely sure that he was not in a position of risk.

“He has been fully training for the last week, and he is available for selection.”

From the vision of training today on AFL360, Cotch looks like he could even play this week but we won't risk him given his hammies.

Prestia looks next closest doing start-stop changing direction drills.

Lambert still looks a fair way away - just jogging.

Dimma said after the Cats game that historically Sheds is a quick healer and he hoped for a speedier recovery than expected. So the return time listed might be stating the typical time for such an ankle injury yet with Sheds he might return sooner. The main thing is when he does return he and his ankle is 100% right :pray. We can't afford to rush any of our older A-graders back.

I think we’ll start seeing some returns from next week. I take short term to be from 1-3 and medium to be from 4-6. Hopefully can get through this week unscathed so we can start working back towards fielding our strongest side.

Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge's injury report:

Patrick Naish, hamstring, unavailable (short term)

"Patrick reported this post-game, it did not hinder him too much during the game, but he did report he was a little bit sore post-game.

“Since then, we have had some scans and it is on the minor end of the scale, so a short-term hamstring injury.

“(He is) definitely not playing this weekend, we will get him up and running later this week and re-assess next week.”

Shane Edwards, ankle, unavailable (short term)

"Shane is running at about 70 to 80 per cent at the moment with his ankle injury. We thought it would progress a little bit quicker than it has. But we are just in a bit of a holding pattern currently.

“We are going to do some more running this week and hopefully that will progress again later this week and hopefully we will be in a position next week to return to some skills.

“We will know more later this week (as to) how he is progressing.”

Kane Lambert, calf, unavailable (medium term)

"Kane is going really well, Kane has a calf injury which has a little bit of tendon involvement which means we generally have to take a little bit longer.

“There is always some risk there if you push it too soon with any kind of tendon injury, with a soft tissue injury, hamstring, or calf injury in Kane’s case.

“At this stage we are just holding steady with his speed. He will not be playing before the bye, but we are hopeful post-bye he will be back training with the main group and we will re-assess when his return to play is.”

Early prognosis

Edwards looks likely to be an inclusion for the big Dreamtime in the West clash against Essendon, having missed the past three games with an ankle injury. Marlion Pickett is now available after serving his one-match suspension for striking. Astbury was a late withdrawal from last week's team with Achilles soreness.

Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge's latest injury report:

Toby Nankervis, knee, unavailable (medium term)

"Yeah, (it was) the very first centre bounce… the contact in the jump of that centre bounce. Toby came off soon after that, and his knee was quite sore, and he was hobbling.

"The doctor did some testing and those sorts of things and suspected that there may have been a little bit of a PCL sprain, but he was good enough to go back out and play at that stage.

"He played the whole game out and was a little bit sore, but our fingers were crossed obviously post-game that he would wake up feeling alright the next day and that there was not too much going on.

"But, he had some scans and definitely sprained his PCL, which is going to require a couple of weeks out of the game, just for it to glue up and for him to do a little bit of strength work around that and get his stability back to normal.

"We will have a better idea in the next week or two about his return to play, but at this stage, it is probably a medium-term injury."

David Astbury, Achilles soreness, unavailable (short term)

"Dave, after a training session early last week, flagged his Achilles was niggling him a little bit. It is something he has been managing for a while, but it just had got a little bit worse over the last few weeks.

"He has been running albeit at a controlled intensity. We have just taken the approach to miss a game this week and just allow that little bit more time and for him to build up some strength again.

"Hopefully, we will have a look at what is happening next week, wherever that is."

Shane Edwards, ankle, probable

"Shane has had a great last seven days. He had a session last Friday in Melbourne and then again Sunday, which were fantastic. He came up (to Sydney) on Sunday, and he has done a training session today, which has gone really well.

"We are in a position Thursday where he might be training with the group, and if that is the case, we think he will be probable for this weekend."

Kane Lambert, calf, short term

"Kane is going really well; Kane has had a great last seven days, and he will resume training with the group next week.

"Depending on what next week holds for us, which we are a bit unsure of at this stage, he is a chance to be training and possibly even be available if we have to play next week."

Title: Re: Injury Update (Season 2021)
Post by: one-eyed on June 28, 2021, 06:57:09 PM
Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge's update:

Noah Balta, ankle, unavailable (TBC)

“Noah obviously had a fairly significant incident during the game where there was a bit of uncertainty as to whether he had a serious injury to his knee.

“(For the) assessment around that with the doctor, Noah was certain he had done his knee. In the limited time, we had to assess him at three-quarter time and then make the decision with the sub, we were thinking it was the knee.

“Further to that, after the game and certainly later that night back at the Club, it appeared that it was more his ankle that was the problem, and his knee was not too bad.

“The scans that we did on Sunday showed that there was some bone bruising on his knee, but he had a fairly significant ankle syndesmosis injury which needs surgery and some stabilisation.”

Nathan Broad, ankle, unavailable (TBC)

“Although he played out the game with it, (Broad's ankle injury) was fairly significant also on the scanning; it was probably a little bit worse than we thought. He is having surgery as well; it is the exact same procedure, stabilisation.

“They will both be in a rehab phase starting later this week, and then we will have a better idea on timelines. It is hard to put a timeline on it at the moment.

“It is certainly not a short-term injury.”

Nick Vlastuin, quad cork, questionable

“Nick had a significant quad cork and played out the game with it. He is pretty sore, and there is some bruising coming out.

“He is a little bit better today. He has got some flexion back in his knee, and tomorrow we will try to get him moving a little bit. With the six-day turnaround, it is going to be line-ball.

“But we are pretty confident he will get himself right to play.”

Mabior Chol, finger, questionable

“'Marbs' dislocated his little finger and played out the game. He is pretty sore today. We will tape him up and put him out at training tomorrow ... and assess him for the game this week.”

Tom Lynch, knee, probable

“'Lynchy' has had a good last week on the training track. He will do our main training session tomorrow and do all of it.

“If that is successful, I imagine he will be selected in the team to play.”

David Astbury, Achilles, probable

“Last week we thought (Dave) would be available to play (but) he pulled up a little bit sore from our main session, so we just held off another week. He has got an Achilles tendinopathy which was a bit grumbly, but then had settled and then a little bit of a reaction, so we took the safe option again.

“He will do the main session tomorrow, and if that goes really well, then he will be available to play this Thursday.”

Toby Nankervis, knee, (short-term)

“Toby has progressed really well in the last week, (and) ran at full speed on the weekend.

“There is some specific ruck things that we need to tick off with Toby with his PCL injury, so he will not be available this week, but we are looking to progress those specific ruck scenarios over the next week.

“We will make an assessment next week as to his availability for the Collingwood game.”

About 7 blokes there from our best 22.

What the hell are we going to do if Chol doesn't play? Ruck CCJ all game with backup from Miller?

Don't think Ryan should be playing, Chol or not.

Last few years we have dealt with injuries during the home and away season to put ourselves in a position to compete for the flag. Injuries might have gotten the better of us this year but look at the young core group of players coming up!

Injury Report: Round 17, 2021

Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge with an update on Toby Nankervis, Bachar Houli, Callum Coleman-Jones, Shane Edwards, Dion Prestia and Kane Lambert in the latest injury report.

Bachar Houli, ankle, (medium-term)

“it was (with) four and a half minutes to go in the game, he had an incident on the far wing where he hurt his ankle. (He) came down from a spoil/a contest, and it was not great to look at on the vision.

"Initially post game the assessment was that he had hurt his ankle, but scans the next day showed he had done a bit of damage to the syndesmosis in the ankle.

“It was decided that he should have some surgery to support the tibia and the fibula which support the ankle… same as ‘Broady’ and Noah Balta the week before.

“Probably if there is a slight positive, (it is that) Bachar’s is not quite as bad. He was able to walk around the next day and feel reasonably comfortable, but the surgery will still help to support that ankle joint.

“We expect his return will be a couple of weeks at best, but again we will have a better idea probably in a week or two as to what that exact timeframe might look like.”

Nick Vlastuin, knee, questionable

“Nick had an incident early in the game where he had a knock to his knee, he was quite sore during the game, and he played it out.

“We have had some scans in the following days, and he has got a little bit of medial ligament damage in his knee which will not necessarily rule him out of the game this week.

“It is on the mild-end of the spectrum, (so) it is straight-line running tomorrow, and then assess him to main train later on in the week to look at his availability for Sunday based on that session.”

Shane Edwards, ankle, questionable

“Shane Edwards had an incident early in the game where he slipped and jammed the back of his ankle. He required a bit of medical treatment early in the first quarter and we had to re-tape his ankle.

“He finished off the game… (but) he is still pretty sore from that incident, and he has also still got the medial ligament issue on that same ankle, that he recovered from a few weeks ago.

‘We are going to assess Shane during the week and make the call later in the week as to whether he plays or not.”

Callum Coleman-Jones, calf, (short-term)

“'CJ' was reporting late in the second quarter, just a little bit of soreness with his calf. At half-time we just took the approach to remove him from the game and activate the sub.

"So, ‘CJ’ will most likely miss this weekend, but we expect that he will be in a position next week to return to play.”

Toby Nankervis, knee, probable

“Toby has had a good last week. He will train fully tomorrow and again Friday. He will have to get through all the usual ruck scenarios that he would do in a game before we give him the final tick off, but it is looking fairly positive at this stage.

“We will make a call later in the week.”

Dion Prestia, hamstring, (short-term)

“Dion is running again and running at a reasonable pace. Dion won’t be available this week but depending on when our game is next week, we will have a look at training and make a judgment.

“He is progressing well, (he has) obviously had a pretty rough trot this year. We are hoping to get him in a position to return to play and keep him on the park for the rest of the year.”

Kane Lambert, hip/calf, (short-term)

“He will start running again tomorrow. This calf injury is a little bit related to a hip issue he has been managing.

“He will miss this week and then we will make an assessment next week as to how he is progressing for a return to training and hopefully selection.”

Nankervis looms as a huge inclusion for the Tigers' match against Collingwood and Brodie Grundy, just needing to get through training this week. Vlastuin has minor MCL damage after a knock to his knee, but is still a chance to play, as is Edwards. Injury-prone pair Prestia and Lambert are set to resume running this week, while Houli's syndesmosis injury requires surgery, but isn't as severe those of Balta and Broad. - Sarah Black

Soldo aim 2022 also.

Retire Houli.

Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge's injury update:

Dustin Martin -  see Dusty's thread.

Kamdyn McIntosh, hamstring, (medium-term)

“Kamdyn had a small incident out on the far wing where he just went to accelerate and felt some awareness in his hamstring. He has never had a hamstring injury before, and further scans have shown it is fairly minor.

“He will definitely miss this week and potentially the week after, but we anticipate it is not going to be anything long-term.

“He is already back running, which is a really good sign with these sorts of injuries, so we would anticipate he is only going to miss one or two weeks potentially.”

David Astbury, ankle, probable

“Dave had an incident late in the game… he came from the field, and we strapped him back up and got him back out there.

“He is walking around fine at the moment… we will take care of him at training tomorrow, and he will resume training with the group on Friday preparing for Sunday’s game.

“I expect him to be available to play.”

Shane Edwards, ankle, probable

“Shane has had a good week. He had an ankle issue which has dragged on and was still causing him a little bit of grief last week, so we just played it really safe.

“He was training yesterday and looking really bouncy with his running, agility and change of direction. He will resume training tomorrow and I anticipate will be available to play this week.”

Callum Coleman-Jones, calf, probable

“(He) had a calf issue from the Gold Coast game (in Round 16) and has been running over the last couple of sessions. He will resume training tomorrow and again Friday and we will assess his availability for the weekend.”

Dion Prestia, hamstring, (short term)

“Dion is back running at full pace and will resume some football training this week. With Dion, we are looking to make sure when he returns that he stays playing football.

“We are going to take two weeks of training and then we will assess next week if he returns to play.”

Nick Vlastuin, knee/quad cork, (short term)

“He is carrying two issues at the moment, he had a medial ligament knee injury from the Gold Coast game, but he also had a significant corky from that game on top of the corky that he had the week before (St Kilda), so that has actually become more of the issue over the last week or so.

“He has had a bit of a re-bleed from that second incident… it was a little bit confusing with the knee and the corky, but it has now become evident that that cork was a lot more serious.

“We have had to actually take a step back and be really careful with him. He has not quite got full range back in that leg.

“He has just started running again yesterday, and it will be a slower progression given now he has missed two and a half weeks of football training.  We are managing him into a program this week and will make an assessment next week as to what that looks like.”

Nathan Broad, ankle, (short term)
and Noah Balta, ankle, (medium term)

“Broady and Noah Balta sustained their ankle injuries in the St Kilda game, and both had surgery for an ankle syndesmosis issue. Both of them are back doing some light running.

“Broady is actually a little bit further progressed. He is running at about 50 percent speed at the moment, so he will progress this week outside (into) straight line running.

“Noah has just started on a treadmill, so he is a little bit behind (Broad), but hopefully will progress more at the back end. His injury was a little bit more serious.”

Bachar Houli, ankle, (medium term)

“Bachar, who was a week later in the Gold Coast game, has just started walking around pain free. He will start some AlterG treadmill running some stage this week.”

McIntosh has already resumed running after a minor hamstring injury against Brisbane. Astbury is expected to be available after turning his ankle in the same match. Broad has progressed quickly in his recovery from surgery on a syndesmosis injury, while Houli will start running in the AlterG treadmill this week. - Sarah Black

PLAYER   INJURY   ESTIMATED RETURN

 Kamdyn McIntosh    Hamstring    Test
 Nick Vlastuin    Knee/Quad    Test
 Bachar Houli    Syndesmosis    1-2 weeks
 Noah Balta    Syndesmosis    3-4 weeks
 Nathan Broad    Syndesmosis    TBC
 Dustin Martin    Kidney    Season

Updated: Tuesday, August 3

Early prognosis
After being an outside chance of returning last week, Broad is now listed as "TBC" by the club. Vlastuin is a strong chance of playing against North Melbourne after several weeks of resting various ailments, while it'll be touch and go for McIntosh. Young key back Ben Miller (groin) is no longer on the injury list, but did not play VFL last week

If Miller is fit we should try him over Garth.

Houli I would only play again in R23 if we have poo'd the bed completely for a farewell game. Even if it's on one leg like Cousins was. Elsewise I wouldn't bother trying to get him on the park while we can technically still make finals/ahead of the kids if we don't.

Floss and KMac would be nice but the real question is can Broad & Balta be fit if we do make the 8?

From: Sarah Black's (@_sjback) Twitter

"Nathan Broad has had a setback of sorts - had returned to full running last week, but pulled up sore. Currently no timeline on his return. Had previously moved quickly through his rehab after having an operation on his syndesmosis joint after rd 15."

Broad still TBC?

If we have a sniff of finals I'd like him playing.

Houli still not retired, amazes me.

Early prognosis

Broad remains as TBC after pulling up sore upon returning to full running. First-year forward/ruck Ryan has joined the injury list with a "medium term" ankle issue, while McIntosh should be right to go this week after being a late withdrawal on Saturday. - Sarah Black

"Marlion decided not to go to Perth because of family issues - he has 4 kids and a wife to support. So he stayed in Melbourne and so wasn't in the bubble. He played in the combined scratch match the other week and will play the 12 v 12 scratch match with GWS at Punt road. He will be played forward again as he is learning a new role."

Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge' update on Trent Cotchin, Shane Edwards, Toby Nankervis, Dustin Martin and David Astbury in the latest injury report.

Trent Cotchin, knee, (season)

“Trent won’t play this weekend. Late in the second quarter, he had an incident last Friday night, where he came off and reported a knee issue.

“Subsequently, after the game, the doctor got to examine it a bit further, and he suspected a PCL type injury. Scans backed that up on Monday and he won’t play this weekend.

“He will go through a recovery and a rehab program now over the off-season and resume his program for next season.”

David Astbury, quad cork (probable)

“Dave last week had flagged a quad cork from the previous game, and it had sort of been niggling him all week. He got through our main session, but on our captain's run, it was still troubling him a little and we made the late call to withdraw him from the game Friday night.

“He is resuming training this week and will fully train on Thursday with the group and all going well, we will make an assessment and hopefully, he is able to come out and play his last game for the Club on Saturday against Hawthorn.”

Shane Edwards, ankle, (season)

“Shane has been managing a bit of a troublesome ankle now for a couple of weeks. Earlier in the season, he had an incident where he damaged some ligament and also the back part of his ankle.

“He recovered reasonably well and came back and played in the Dreamtime game. (But) since then, he has been troubled by some ankle impingement at the back of his ankle and has been playing with it for most of the year.

“In recent weeks, it has troubled him a little bit more and we have just made the call that he needs to go and have a cleanout, a scope, and he is getting that done tomorrow, so as a result, he will miss this weekend’s game.

“The recovery time is not a significant one, so he will have a great chance over the off-season to prepare for next year.”

Toby Nankervis, finger/foot/knee, (season)

“Toby suffered a finger injury in the game last week, a fracture in his finger. He has also damaged some ligament, which is going to need surgical repair, so he won’t be playing this week.

“(That is) along with managing his PCL from earlier in the year, and a foot issue as well. It has added up a little bit for Toby, but it is the finger injury that is ruling him out this weekend.”

Early prognosis
The retiring Astbury will be keen to get back for his final game after missing last week with a corked quad, while Houli is an outside chance to also play.
