Title: Rhyan Mansell [merged]
Post by: one-eyed on February 18, 2021, 02:23:07 PM
Time to start a thread about Mansell now he is officially a Tiger  :clapping.

Mansell, who hails from Tasmania, is no stranger to premiership glory, having won a SANFL flag with Woodville West Torrens last year, while also winning three senior flags with Launceston.

He has been on the club's radar for several years despite focusing mainly on cricket as a junior.

Mansell, who represented the Allies at 2018 AFL national Under 18 championships, was a key member of the Woodville-West Torrens side that claimed the 2020 SANFL league premiership, averaging 14.1 disposals, 5.7 intercepts and 78 Champion Data ranking points. He saved one of his best games for the grand final, racking up 19 touches, eight marks and five tackles.

Mansell put himself on the draft radar with his burst of pace and skills off half-back, as well as his toughness.

Richmond recruiting manager Matt Clarke said Mansell, who also won three senior flags with Launceston in the TSL, had been on the club’s radar for several years.

“We have always liked his stuff because he suited what we like in a player; super competitive, physical, (and with) really good speed,” he explained.

“He has Richmond qualities and that ability to come in hard and tackle.

“He played footy, but he was in the cricket pathways. He also played soccer mainly as a kid, so he was not in all the (football) squads like a lot of kids are.

“To go into Woodville-West Torrens last year under an excellent coach (Jade Sheedy) and into a great footy club and brilliantly run organisation was fantastic.

“When he went there from Tasmania, it gave us confidence he could do well, and he obviously fitted into a really good team and won a flag, which was a big tick.”

“We watched all his vision and the live streaming last year, but it is just not the same as actually being there,” Clarke said.

“So, to be able to get him over here to train was great and a chance for us to also see how he could fit into our system and how quickly he would be able to learn, which he has.

“We have been able to have a bit of a look at how he might adapt to the way we play and defend, and he has coped really well.”

Rhyan Mansell
20-years-old
180cm
72kg

Standout attributes:
Pace, defensive impact plays

Rhyan was a standard setter for hardness and defensive actions in the back half for the Eagles. Smothers, 50/50s, hard tackles and spoils. Made his presence felt and can make the big play.

He doesn't read the flight as well as some others but makes up for it in closing speed.

His greatest weakness currently is his inconsistent disposal which is quite a drawback considering he is capable of finding the ball consistently.

He should be in the frame for clubs looking for a hard shutdown defender.

The appealing aspects of playing at Richmond

“The fans and the culture. And there’s a lot of history, obviously. Great club, most successful club in the recent era . . . I can’t wait to run out and play on the ‘G’. The whole club is very attractive, so I can’t wait to play for them.”

THE RICHMOND DEBUTANT WHICH SURPRISED MATTHEW RICHARDSON

Club great Matthew Richardson said he was surprised to see Mansell make his debut early considering how late he was added on Richmond’s list.

“It’s good news for Richmond and their supporters,” he said on Sportsday after the two debutants were named.

“We haven’t seen a lot of new faces because they’ve been winning and successful, (Rhyan) Mansell is a bit of a surprise as he was literally the last man (added) on the list.

“He’s a hard at it back pocket (player) and runs hard so he’ll slot into the back half.” “I thought it would’ve been (Hugo) Ralphsmith (to come in earlier) but he was suspended in the VFL.”

More of a defender this kid.

I think we will see Pickett and someone else (?Edwards) on the wing.

Houli, Mansell, Short as small backs.

Playing his debut has probably cost Rhyan money. MRP wants $4000 off him for two incidents.

Charges Laid:

Rhyan Mansell, Richmond, has been charged with Engaging in Rough Conduct against Connor Rozee, Port Adelaide, during the first quarter of the Round Four match between Port Adelaide and Richmond, played at Adelaide Oval, on Friday April 9.

In summary, he can accept a $2000 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available evidence, the incident was assessed as Intentional Conduct, Low Impact, Body Contact. The incident was classified as a $3000 sanction as a first offence. The player can accept a $2000 sanction with an early plea.

Tigers youngster driven by North snub

Daniel Cherny
The Age
April 17, 2021

Richmond defender Rhyan Mansell says he is spurred on by North Melbourne’s decision to bypass him in his draft year, having been a member of the Kangaroos’ next generation academy.

Mansell, 20, played in a winning AFL side for the first time on Thursday night as the Tigers crushed St Kilda by 86 points at Marvel Stadium.

The speedy backman had traversed a circuitous route to get to such a stage. The Indigenous Tasmanian was a member of North’s NGA and is the cousin of emerging Roo Tarryn Thomas, but the Roos opted against taking Mansell in his draft year of 2018.

Fellow Tasmanian and former Tiger Sam Lonergan helped get him to Woodville-West Torrens at the end of 2019. Lonergan is now on Richmond’s coaching panel, reunited with Mansell.

After a strong 2020 in the SANFL, Mansell again slipped through the draft but was invited to train over the summer for a supplemental selection period spot at Punt Road.

He got the nod in late February, making his senior debut in round four against Port Adelaide.

“I don’t even really know how to explain it, to be honest. I never thought that this would happen. The last two weeks have just been a big blur to me and I’m trying to take in as much as I can,” Mansell said as he enjoyed the spoils of the win over the Saints.

Mansell credits Lonergan and Woodville-West Torrens coach Jade Sheedy as the men most responsible for igniting his AFL dream.

“I definitely wouldn’t be in this position right now if I hadn’t have made the move across to Adelaide and played for the Eagles last year,” he said.

When he arrived at Punt Road, Mansell was determined not to have any regrets.

“I didn’t want to leave any stone unturned, I wanted to give it my best and if I wasn’t good enough, so be it. But I put everything into it and trained real hard over Christmas break and I thought coming in I felt like I belonged straight away.”

And he says there is a part of him keen to make North pay for their decision not to take him.

“They didn’t see the potential in me. Richmond have taken the punt on me and they saw all the potential in me, so credit to Richmond for backing me in and giving me a good crack,” Mansell said.

“I spent a couple of years on North Melbourne’s next-gen academy and it didn’t work out and I definitely use that as a lot of motivation to where I’ve got to now.

“They had the chance to get me for near nothing as well so I was a bit flat that I didn’t get there. Obviously, my good cousin Tarryn, he’s there. It would have been awesome to play with him, but it’s worked out perfectly.”

While North languish at the bottom of the ladder, Mansell is running out with champions like Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt.

“I definitely pinch myself a bit, when I’m running out beside Dusty and Riewoldt, Cotchin, it doesn’t feel real to be honest, it feels like a dream.”

He says he’d been told by the Tigers’ coaches he’d been picked in the seniors because “I play like a ‘Richmond man’.

“My competitiveness and for a small bloke the physical side of the game. And my speed as well.”

I think they are ironing out the wings. MacIntosh has one locked down and now trying to see who best fits the other wing having Baker play through there seeing he was exposed against Sydney with the young tall boy taking easy marks against him.
When Vlaustin returns it will be interesting to see if they’ll persist with Baker on a wing but depending on the opposition I don’t mind him as a wingman.
Title: Re: Rhyan Mansell [merged]

Hugo Ralphsmith if not for suspension by all accounts would have got a game on the wing.I like the idea of having a big 188cm quick good skilled wingman who knows where the goals are.

To me the potential upside of Hugo is much higher than any thing that Baker and McIntosh offer.

This will cause another poo storm but McIntosh should not be best 22 long term. Foot skills are horrendous he is one of the biggest fumblers in the team and he just doesnt stay involved enough in games.

I get the love people have for him he runs hard he runs straight lines he works back and helps but the bottom line is hes at best a foot soldier who does a couple of team things well. Its a bit like the current Rioli debate atm.I just think we can and should do a lot better or should be aiming for better at least.

No surprise nothing to see here from the MRO.

Incident assessed:

Contact between Geelong Cats’ Joel Selwood and Richmond’s Rhyan Mansell from the third quarter of Friday night’s match between Richmond and the Geelong Cats was assessed. Selwood approaches the loose ball after it is handballed behind Richmond’s Mansell. As Mansell attempts to retreat for the ball, he is held by Geelong player Shaun Higgins in an attempt to allow his teammate Selwood to contest the ball. As Selwood approaches the ball, he turns side-on and lowers his body to take possession as Mansell reaches for the ball when high contact is made. It was determined by the Match Review Officer that Selwood was contesting the ball and his actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances. No further action was taken.

My issue with that ruling is it wasn’t a loose ball. Mansell beat Selwood to the ball and had taken possession. So, if the ball is loose and you turn sideways and initiate contact with the head it’s play-on?

Dimma actually defended Selwood tonight over the collision with Mansell's head.

Dimma mentioned that they spoke at length about this at match committee today. We teach our players to step over the ball. It was the correct technique by Joel and poor by Rhyan who has only be in our system for a short while.

Dimma added that this head high stuff is creeping back into the game. Not saying Rhyan did this but players are leading with their head, dropping their knees and shrugging their shoulders. In these days with concussion, we shouldn't have seniors players setting that example for juniors by attracting the umpires and playing for free kicks. It makes the umpires' job harder and should be frowned upon also from a coaching view.

AFL-listed North Launceston premiership player Rhyan Mansell had (a) day to remember this weekend with strong individual performances.

Mansell, who was picked up via the supplementary selection period in February, collected a career-high 15 disposals in the Tigers' shock 16-point loss to Collingwood.

Returning to the AFL last weekend as the medical substitute, Mansell's new-best effort also featured five rebound 50s and should see him retain his spot in the side given the Tigers' injury woes.

I really am enjoying watching this kid play. He isn’t weak nor is he shy to take the game on and backs himself in, most importantly he can kick and he doesn’t take any crap from anyone.

Ticks all the boxes and we should keep playing him now.

We have found a great player outside the draft yet again.

I am so disappointed in the team for playing Houli over him. Houli should be there for when Mansell needs a rest, that's it.

Also need to be getting games into Miller before season's end. Garth has no future with us. Astbury playing ok again but should also be depth by now.

The others on On the Couch were dismissive of this ::) but Nick Riewoldt last night showed Mansell flying from the side into a pack to spoil and praised Rhyan for his courage. Nick said that's how a young player earns respect from the rest of the playing group.

Adam Kingsley's comments on Mansell:

"He does have a crack defensively...He's got a really nice blend at the moment of being able to attack but also defend. He's got a little bit of 'Shorty' about him in that he can run and carry and really penetrate with his kick. He has a nice kick and he's starting to find a bit more of the ball. We're quite pleased with how our backs are going and how they've slotted in...There are going to be some difficult decisions towards the end of the season...They're really working hard and trying to cement their spots which is great."

Mansell has been extended by two years, tying him to the Club until the end of 2023.

Mansell, 21, put together an excellent debut season for Richmond, playing 13 matches as a small defender.

The former Woodville West Torrens premiership player was added to the Club’s list as a Supplementary Selection in February.

Mansell averaged 11 disposals, 2.2 tackles and 2.7 rebound 50s this year, with his defensive attributes and mindset a highlight.

“Rhyan has also worked really hard since he first joined us as a train-on player in January.

“He has thoroughly deserved the senior opportunities he received this year, and we are excited to see him continue to progress across the next two years and beyond.” - Blair Hartley.

Does anyone know if Mansell has been promoted to the senior list or will he remain as a rookie?

“We tracked him like a lot of these boys from their (under) 16s days . . . we’d been watching him for a while,” Richmond recruiting manager, Matt Clarke said.

“We had some really good info out of Tassie about how he went about his footy.

“And then, when he made the decision to go play over in the SANFL (with Woodville-West Torrens), Jade Sheedy (Woodville-West Torrens coach) and the boys saw the hardness in him that they wanted as a small back.

“He played every week on the best small forward, learned every week and worked really hard.

“Rhyan’s always played with that real hard edge to his footy, which we like . . . and he fits into the group really well.”

Young Tiger Rhyan Mansell lashed for ‘double forearm’ when umpires were ‘powerless’

Ben Waterworth
Fox Sports
May 7th, 2022 5:23 pm

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has backed in young Tiger Rhyan Mansell for his physicality, but insists he didn’t see the “double forearm” to the back of Pies antagonist Jack Ginnivan that had Pies players erupting on Saturday afternoon at the MCG.

Mansell could face Match Review Officer scrutiny for the action, which led to a scuffle at three-quarter time of Richmond’s 27-point win over Collingwood.

After Ginnivan snapped a goal towards the back-end of the third quarter, some Richmond players niggled him.

Then as Collingwood attempted to conjure a late third-term goal, Ginnivan tried to pick the ball up before Mansell fell into his back.

Replays then appeared to show Mansell using his forearm to the back of Ginnivan’s head twice: First when he initially landed on the Magpie then when both players were lying on the turf.

Several Collingwood players, including Brody Mihocek and Brayden Maynard, were clearly unhappy with the young Tiger’s treatment and ran straight to Mansell to remonstrate.

Speaking post-game, Hardwick bristled at any suggestion Ginnivan had been unduly targeted, insisting the physicality was part and parcel of Mansell’s game.

“Have you met Rhyan Mansell? Not at all (extra attention on Ginnivan),” he said.

“End of the day, I didn‘t notice it compared to any other player, but we want our small backs to be physical and like most other backs in the AFL they’d be doing exactly the same.”

Collingwood coach Craig McRae also said he didn’t see the incident, but was aware Ginnivan would come under more and more scrutiny from rival clubs as he continued to dominate headlines for his flair and purple patch in front of goal.

“I think anybody that‘s been in the competition for a long time realises that when you’re playing good footy someone wants to take that away from you. They’ll find a way to find a weakness,” he said.

“I think for Jack it’s just part of his growth, first and second year players get a bit more attention when you start to play well.”

Assessing the incident on Fox Footy, commentator Jason Dunstall labelled Mansell’s action “a double forearm to the back of the head.”

“He’ll cop a fine or a week for that – probably a fine because it was low impact. But maybe there could be an option to pay a free kick after the siren.”

St Kilda legend Nick Riewoldt said the umpires were left in an awkward position, because the incident came to light after the siren.

“We could hear the Collingwood players asking the umpires: ‘Why is that not a free kick?’ And the umpire said: ‘It’s after the siren, we wish we could pay a free kick but we can’t,’” Riewoldt said.

“Amazing scenes at three quarter-time. Clearly you would expect if it was in general play Mansell would’ve been done for two free kicks. But because it was after the siren, the umpires were powerless to do anything about it, other than potentially report the player.

“Mansell comes over the top with the one elbow, goes again a second time – which is pretty poor form.”

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick explains why he won’t rein in suspended Tigers defender Rhyan Mansell

Marc McGowan
May 12, 2022 - 1:21PM
NCA NewsWire

Richmond premiership coach Damien Hardwick won’t demand Rhyan Mansell changes the way he plays despite him being suspended for an ugly cheap shot on Magpie Jack Ginnivan.

The fringe Tigers defender copped a one-match ban after twice deliberately striking Ginnivan to the back of the head with his right forearm and elbow in scenes not seen in the AFL for some time.

Match review officer Michael Christian assessed the incident as intentional conduct, low impact and high contact, which triggered the sanction.

The exciting Collingwood forward has become a lightning rod for headlines with his precocious playing style and mannerisms and was on the end of physical treatment from Richmond for much of Saturday’s game.

“Ryan was disappointed. He came and apologised (but) he is a fierce competitor. Sometimes you step over the line,” Hardwick said.

“He gets suspended for it and he deserved the week, no question. He was really disappointed in his actions but the fact of the matter is Rhyan Mansell, to succeed, has got to be tough and uncompromising.

“Now, he overstepped the line. Every now and then players are going to do this, whether it’s Rhyan Mansell or another fierce competitor.

“I can’t ask him to take that away from his game because otherwise he won’t be playing AFL footy.

“Just make sure it’s within the rules or pushing the rules as close as you can be to that line. We don’t want to go over it.”

Mansell, 21, was playing just his second senior game of the season and 15th overall since being plucked out of the SANFL as a pre-season supplemental selection period recruit just before last season.

But speaking of not seeing anything, is ginnivan’s main offence is he has a punchable face? It doesn’t phase me either way, I’m happy to jump on the bandwagon.

Was doing most of his work between the arcs. The courage he showed in the last minute to get to the drop of the ball to mark when cramping only seconds earlies, shows how tough this kid is. The resulting mark was the chain in which Tom kicked the last goal. Played his role IMO.

Dimma talking today about Mansell and his role:

"People have got to understand the way we play the game. Mansell is a guy who plays a role similar to what Jason Castagna used to play for us as well. We're not about kicks, marks and handballs. It's about a system for us and the player that plays that system. He did a terrific job in that role. The fact of the matter is that role in our side is difficult because sometimes you're not on the ball side and you've got to stay away. So, he played that role really really well last week. We were pleased with what he put on the park. He'll be a player who'll put his hand up to play again this week."

Pig headedness is not good coaching. Big big mistake not playing Sonsie or Cumberland this week.
I don't know any other coach in the comp who would not be gleefully jumping over the moon at the prospect of having a small fwd kicking 2 plus goals a game who also lays crunching tackles.
What have we done this week to fix up those pesky polish problems? whats that i hear? oh absolutely nothing.

Let the good kids rot in the two's and lets play the battlers seems to be hooch's mantra.

Thought he had a much improved game. After a very lacklustre first quarter was very active in the second quarter a made some good decisions and helped in our 8 goal quarter.

He is nothing special but I do like his attack in the contest and he isn’t soft. Should’ve kicked that goal though.

Most of all our “leaders” need to take a good look at their game tonight they were rubbish.

I still stand by my opinion on Mansell. What he lacks in flair & skill he makes up with never say die attitude for four quarters. He won’t take a backwards step or pull out of a contest and will pressure the opponent for the whole game.

Rhyan Mansell had a shot at goal late in the game that could have sealed it for Richmond, but it went out on the full.

"He's one of those guys who tries his backside off," Hardwick said.

"At least he put himself in the position to have the shot on goal."

I think he got some attributes I like and as Dio has suggested might possibly make a decent tagger one day.

But I would persist with him in the forward role for the rest of the season and let him develop and I’ll back him in that he will make it.

He pressure acts are normally very good in F50 but he was not up to standard vs Port.

In todays football you need forwards that can apply pressure on the opposition defenders but unfortunately we don’t have much better options that have the consistent work rate to do that for four quarters. Mansell & Bolton have been our best options at the moment and besides last Sunday both have been our most consistent in this area.
Would love to see more of Rioli and Cumberland but they need to apply the same amount of pressure that is required
Title: Re: Rhyan Mansell [merged]
Post by: Tiger Khosh on May 30, 2023, 09:56:05 PM
Without looking it up, I would be very very shocked if mansells pressure rating got anywhere near riolis.

Rioli wasn’t dropped because he wasn’t applying pressure or tackling, it was because he fumbled and/or turned the ball over almost every time he had the ball in hand.
Title: Re: Rhyan Mansell [merged]
Post by: TigerLand on May 31, 2023, 09:09:14 AM
Mansell is OK, far from our biggest issue. I'm unsure on how much better he can get and at this point I think he isn't a best 22 player. There is surely more dangerous small forwards available with better goal sense and same pressure rating. I have no issue if he comes in for an injured best 22 small forward which he sorta is at the moment of Jnr.

I'd be more interested in putting time in ensuring Jnr becomes AFL standard and if not make him the depth and then get in a small forward who is.

Personally think he's really unlucky that Aisha gets their a split second before him. Education would say we'd want him to tackle next time but ge it's split second stuff and I reckon 99% is just natural bracing for contact.

There’s such a thing as incidental contact in a footy match. That why Butler will get off and why he got suspended in th first place is mind boggling  :help

Mansell keeps his eyes on the ball they both meet but “luckily” for both players Mansell braces for impact if he doesn’t it may have been a lot worse. He doesn’t jump he doesn’t look at the player the Freo player lowers the body a split second before contact so Mansell hits both the shoulder and the head at the same time.

If this gets weeks it’s ridiculous.

He will cop at least 1 or 2 weeks. Didn't think he should but that's what will happen IMHO

His case is hurt by 2 things Aish was concussed and as Basil harped on about He lost his headband

Basil was horrendous last night with his call of the game. This bump is the best I have seen since Stack flattened Viney a few years ago. Mansell who plays the game one way- hard will be punished due to Aish having no regard for his own personal safety. Brace and protect yourself is what players should be taught. It would be a shame for Mansell to miss games as he is in form and giving us that hard edge we crave.

Agree re Aush

He contributed to his concussion

Mansell braced fir contact, Aish didn't. I'd argue he actually went looking for contact.

The AFL harp on about a duty of care but it must apply to both players in the contest not just one.

What a surprise MRO Michael Christian contradicting himself and his own decisions ::).

In 2021, Joel Selwood and Mansell collided both going for the ball. Selwood turned his body (correct technique) while Mansell didn't going head first (Dimma at the time said it was poor technique). Christian cleared Selwood of any wrongdoing.

The AFL's match review officer has cleared Geelong captain Joel Selwood of any wrongdoing in his collision with Richmond's Rhyan Mansell.

Selwood turned his body while picking up the in-dispute ball on Friday night, inadvertently making contact with Mansell's head.

The incident was scrutinised by match review officer Michael Christian, but he found Selwood was contesting the ball and his actions "were not unreasonable".

https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/7244031/afl-match-review-officer-clears-selwood/

The Mansell-Aish incident is no different. Loose ball and both players were running at pace from opposite directions for the ball. Mansell turned his body at the last second as he had been told to do by not only our coaches but also by the same MRO only two years earlier. Aish didn't turn his body (poor technique) and came off second best. That's not Mansell's fault.

This is what I would be arguing to the Tribunal if I was the RFC counsel. Mansell showed correct technique going for the loose ball as the MRO ticked off for Selwood only two years ago when it was Mansell on the receiving end. While Aish didn't. We need to educate all footballers to use the correct technique (turning the body side-on) to avoid head collisions and concussion incidents; not punish those players that already do.

Richmond’s Rhyan Mansell will defend his bump on Fremantle’s James Aish (from 5:30pm).

RHYAN MANSELL HEARING (from 5:30pm EST)

Perhaps the least controversial of Tuesday’s three hearings, Tiger Mansell is facing a hefty suspension after concussing Fremantle’s James Aish on Saturday night.

“I think it’s cut and dry in terms of the report, he turned sideways against James Aish,” Jon Ralph said on Fox Footy’s On the Couch.

“He was a step late, maybe half a step late, but it was clear contact from shoulder to head ... he’ll try and potentially downgrade it from three weeks to two.”

But even Dockers coach Justin Longmuir sympathised with Mansell given the split-second nature of the collision.

“We’re asking a lot of our players and I really feel for Mansell on this occasion, because I think largely he’s going 100 miles an hour trying to contest the footy,” Longmuir said on Fox Footy’s AFL 360.

“And this incident was after we got within seven points and kicked the first two of the last quarter, and the game was well and truly on the line, so both players have got intent until the last second.

“Mansell turns his body at the last second and collects Aishy high, so I feel for the split-second decisions that players have to make in modern-day football.”

Wow, the AFL rep is clueless about footy if that's their suggested alternative options :facepalm.

When there's two players going for a loose ball, you can't tackle your opponent who hasn't taken possession of the ball.

And if a player pulls out of a contest (i.e. "you could've slowed"), they would get dragged and likely dropped from the team.

Hannon (AFL): If this does not constitute a bump, what is it then?

Hannon (AFL): At the point of the bump, Mansell wasn't contesting the ball. If he was, it wasn't reasonable to contest the ball in the way he did.

Hannon (AFL) says Mansell could've tackled Aish. Alternatively, he could've slowed "even slightly".

Tovey (Tigers) says Mansell was bracing but "not driving through in a classic bumping motion".

Tovey (Tigers): Mansell's attack on the ball was legitimate and it was genuine. Who was going to get the ball was dependent on that final bounce.

Tovey (Tigers) says there were two tenths of a second for Mansell to react to the ball bouncing to Aish.

Tovey (Tigers): He braces himself at the last possible moment. If this was a player who was lining up another player to bump, you would see that motion occurring earlier.

Yep, it's ridiculous what the AFL rep. is suggesting.

The answer to this is for BOTH players to use the correct technique as Mansell did and both turn their bodies so they collide side on and avoid any head high contact. If Aish had also turned his body, he wouldn't have been concussed.

On the Mansell suspension, I reckon we approached this one badly. We should have gone with "what were Mansell's options?" and the fact that he was entitled to contest possession of a loose ball at full speed. Plus, given that both players arrived at the ball simultaneously, did Aish move to protect himself in any way?

To go with "it wasn't a bump" was asking for problems IMO.

Some new football terms -

SQUIB - the bloke who avoids contact & refuses to put his body on the line when his team needs him to.

SMART SQUIB - the bloke who drops in some short steps instead of going hard at the ball, but doesn't get reamed by the MRO for making contact when his team needed him to.

So which player do you want in your football team?

I'd go with neither ...

So how do we pick a football team now?

Johnson was resisting the tackle, his arms weren't pinned, and he made no attempt to dispose of the ball. The whistle should have been blown straight away; not wait until the player is turned 720 degrees. If you watch old replays of footy from 40 years ago like the 1980 GF, the umps would blow the whistle as soon as the ball stopped moving. The Umps nowdays waiting for the ball to come out is a key contributor to these late sling tackles.

If that wasn't two players simply running at top speed from opposite directions to contest a loose ball then the game now is no longer Aussie Rules.

ps. Amazing what two years and who performs the bump can do when it comes to classing a bump as being "not unreasonable" or not ::).

Hannon (AFL): You could've tackled him?

Mansell: I don't believe I could've.

Hannon (AFL): You could've slowed?

Mansell: Not at the speed we were going at.

So according to the Tribunal, leaping off the ground and smashing into a player as he disposes of the ball or taking out a player after his disposes of the ball is not as bad as turning your body to contest a loose ball against an oncoming opponent with both of you going at full pace? :huh :huh3 :facepalm

Gaelic footy anyone. Have had an inkling this is where they want to get to for many years now.

Just ban the bump if they don't have the guts to do that which they don't because everything they do is slow and thru the back door and they won't openly go against public opinion then just set a very clear criteria like we used to have.

The degoey bump was fine imo. ball was in the area the player could expect contact both players were upright it was from the side he stayed low kept everything tucked in good bump that just happened to cop his opponent high because he was a bigger man free kick only.

When a tackle goes high we dont go to the tribunal it is just a free kick.

“IT JUST DOESN’T SEEM RIGHT”: HODGE COMMENTS ON SICILY, MANSELL SUSPENSIONS

Andrew Slevison
SEN
14 June 2023

Luke Hodge believes the suspensions handed down to both Hawthorn’s James Sicily and Richmond’s Rhyan Mansell are extremely harsh.

Hodge added on SEN’s Whateley: “I feel that the Tribunal got it wrong last night.”

Tigers youngster Mansell was also hit with a suspension of three matches for his head-high bump on Fremantle’s James Aish.

Mansell was attempting to gather the ball at full speed when he and Aish collided which ended in a concussion to the Dockers winger.

Hodge was at a loss to explain what else Mansell could have done to avoid contact.

“On face value, if you watch that last split-second of the bump, it looks like he’s going to run straight through him,” Hodge added.

“If you look at how the play unfolded, Aish was running with the ball, the ball’s gone over his head, Mansell has run out and that ball bobbled end over end and sat up which meant it went back towards Aish.

“If that had have bobbled one more time, Mansell picks the ball up and he’s charging out. Everyone is going to sit there and go ‘well done, look at the attack on this young fella’.

“That ball bounces up, Aish doesn’t get the ball in his hands so he (Mansell) can’t tackle him, he can’t slow down and he collides. The Tribunal said why didn’t he attempt to pick up the ball? If he had have tried to get the ball, he would have run head-first straight into Aish.

“So then you would have had two blokes knocked out.

“As a (past) player I feel for him because he did the right thing and because of the bounce of an oval ball, it made him hesitate.

“I’m siting here going is three weeks fair for that? That’s probably a bit harsh in my books.”

Additionally, Collingwood great Nathan Buckley took to Twitter to express his dismay with the current environment.

He believes the game is difficult enough for the players without muddying the waters even further when it comes to tackling and bumping.

Justin Longmuir said he was reluctant to comment on Mansell's Tribunal case given he did not follow it closely, but the coach expected there would be ongoing frustration as players adjusted to new expectations around head high contact.

"We are asking our players to make split second decisions and sometimes they're going to get those decisions wrong," he said.

"I think overall, the AFL's mantra of protecting the head is right and as we try and reach a water level where it's acceptable in our game there is going to be some frustrations around players getting suspended or free kicks against.

"We're just going to have to deal with those frustrations until we find the right level."

FREMANTLE could be without important wingman James Aish for multiple matches because of concussion as he recovers from a heavy collision with Richmond forward Rhyan Mansell.

"This isn't Aishy's first concussion, so we'll take extra precaution and make sure we get everything right," Longmuir said on Wednesday.

I'm guessing we will challenge the Tribunal's judgement that it wasn't a contested loose ball. When you look at the vision, at no stage does Aish have clean possession of the ball (so tackling him wasn't an option for Mansell). Then there's the speed element. A modern footballer can sprint at around 11 m/s. The Tribunal expected Mansell to alter his speed and course barely one metre away. That's only 0.09 secs to make a decision which is unrealistic. Then add the unpredictability of the last bounce of the ball just before the collision where the ball lands on its point and changes direction. If the bouncing ball's trajectory had remained the same (bouncing away from Aish and towards Mansell) then the outcome would've been obviously different.

It's the wrong decision. MT is spot on what other option is there he never took possession, can't suspend for 3 weeks cause of not putting hands on the footy.

But by precedent he turns the body and it looks bumpy. Anyone who has played footy knows you don't have to be front on to take possession, side on protects yourself from injury and makes you harder to tackle.

Can't see the verdict changing.

"The Mansell decision is one I think the Tribunal got 100 per cent wrong, it’s a big blow for the young Tiger who’s having an impact."

Gerard Healy's editorial on the two three-week suspensions that were handed out at the AFL Tribunal last night [Tuesday].

Go to 10:40 min mark: https://megaphone.link/NTETP7014032807

Healy said Mansell's was a brace and not a bump and that Mansell was looking at the ball and not the player until the last moment when he braced.

Healy also added the appeals are about the law and not a retrial. Cornes reckons Richmond will challenge what a legal bump is. What is a bump? Has the AFL legally defined what a bump is? Both Healy and Cornes liked that approach as an appeal.

Just a slight correction to my post which doesn't change the argument. It should say 9 m/s not 11 (the latter would be close to 100m world record sprint pace). It doesn't alter the fact though that it's unrealistic to expect any player to make a decision in a small fraction of a second (0.11 secs).

Crazy and dangerous stuff by the AFL to now demand players open themselves up or slow down "slightly" at contests rather than turning their bodies and protecting themselves going for the ball.

Actually, if the appeal fails, the Club could potentially take this to WorkSafe as OHS at every workplace states the first duty of every employee is to protect themself which is what Mansell was doing. It was Aish who didn't and as a result he came off second best.

Great post MT, the AFL must acknowledge that collisions will occur in the game and ensure the players are trained on how to protect themselves from it. The lawyers have got them spooked and instead of coaching the players to protect themselves they are actually opening themselves up to more negligence claims by pretending that bumps are going to go away. I'll wager a pineapple that Liam Baker gets done by the end of the season on one of these.

Dann (Tigers) says the real question in this case is: "Whether a player who does no more than takes reasonable action to protect themselves and brace for an unavoidable collision can be involved in the bumping of another player."

Dann (Tigers): It has to remain a fundamental entitlement that any player, called upon in certain circumstances, can be able to protect themselves.

Dann (Tigers): Just as in everyday life, a person has an entitlement in certain extreme circumstances to take action to protect themselves.

Hannon (AFL) says the Tribunal's reasons may've been brief on Tuesday, "but that does not mean that they are wrong."

"The Tribunal expressly found a metre or two from impact, Mansell turned and bumped."

Hannon (AFL): The meaning of 'bump' or the act of bumping shouldn't be constrained narrowly, but given a wide interpretation, consistent with the remedial purpose of affording players protection in their on-field workplace.

I suppose they factored in the new coach being paid less so we have room to move, though ultimately a really stupid move to appeal IMO.

No surprise in the Appeal Board upholding the original decision even if it the wrong decision

I am glad we appealed as it needed to be done.

At least we know now that every single case of players bracing for contact to avoid serious injury will result in a suspension for the player doing the right thing and stupid player who makes no attempt to protect themselves no matter what the consequences will get a pat on the head and told "you poor thing" and face no consequences of their stupidity.

With this ruling the AFL has basically said go out there, don't protect yourself to avoid injury just smash into each other with the hope you  both suffer injury and then the AFL won't have to apportion blame to either party.

Disgraceful decision but what do youo expect now?

There's no confusion and everything is fine according to incoming AFL CEO Andrew Dillon.

-----------------------------

Dillon said while sanctions for dangerous tackles would be reviewed at the end of the season, they were in the “right spot” at the moment.

“I don’t really see there being confusion,” Dillon told reporters.

“At the moment the penalties or the sanctions are in the right spot.

“But as we do every year at the end of the year, we’ll review how the season is going and where we want to go going forward.

“So (that) doesn‘t necessarily mean we’ll stay in the same spot.”

Agreed, but there is undoubtedly a new puritanism asserting itself: A new age of insufferable protestants obsessed with salvation who can't just mind their own thoughts and words -- they have to regulate everyone else's thoughts and words as well. At least with the Catholics -- they have their own problems -- but at least they know they can uphold the ritual once a week and get back to afternoon siestas Monday to Saturday. Give me southern Europe any day. Way too much missionary energy in the society these days from people who think they're irreligious but are painful religious cliches. It's all quite interesting seeing the same patterns come and go -- until they reach your front door anyway. Personally, I don't get too worked up about it.

The aspect I find most interesting at the moment is that the puritanical cast of mind is nowadays divorced from religion in peoples' minds but is nothing but religious residue, so if you ask people why they are behaving like all sorts of zealots from the past they will come up with all sorts of cunning rationalisations for their behaviour (as we all do), when they're simply behaving unconsciously like their forebears and deeming themselves secular and fresh.

Add to that a sort of Orwellian Newspeak that's doing the rounds at the moment -- case in point, the modern term 'equity'. Equity is simply the return of 'equality of outcome' marketed under a new name. The debate over equality of outcome was closed long ago: Most people could see the appeal of equality of opportunity, but almost everyone came to see that equality of outcome was at best unrealizable and at worst necessarily (and demonstrably) totalitarian and undesirable. Fast forward half a century and it's back, but sneakily. And it's not a substantial idea either: The way it's taught in schools and universities is with memes and pictures of different sized children standing on different sized boxes according to their height. Lesson there: If you can't win a mature debate with substantial ideas, wait a while and contest an infantile debate with non-ideas and symbolism. (George Carlin: "I leave symbols for the symbol-minded.")

Which is more infuriating -- hard left or hard right? Hard to say. Probably hard right - they always seem unapologetically sadistic and brainless. Either way, chuck 'em all on a spaceship together so the rest of us can get on with our lives.

Yep, wear the hoops it seems and it's no case to answer.

--------------------------

Francis’ head hit the turf and he took some time to get to his feet, but played out the match.

The AFL confirmed Match Review Officer Michael Christian had assessed the incident but determined premiership forward Close had no case to answer.

"Francis gains possession of the ball with momentum in the Sydney Swans' back pocket and is tackled by Close," the AFL said in a statement.

"It was the view of the MRO that despite having Francis in a vulnerable position, Close attempted to slow momentum in taking him to ground and that in the circumstances he was not careless in tackling in that manner.

"No further action was taken."

He was saying wing could be a role for him in the AFL if required. Multi position players add value. I know he has his defectors; however, to perform and be BOG after a 4 week break speaks volumes for his professionalism. He plays with high intensity and is the ultimate team first player. Definitely above VFL level :shh

He is not a big goal kicker and has been playing the very important  unappreciated team role but there is no knock on his effort and attack on the ball / man.
He is a natural defender in my opinion
Just goes to show that our recruiting of small / medium defenders is in excess and we are trying to find other position around the ground that may or may not work

Bigger issues than Mnasell. Thought he was good enough today. For a guy who would be on lowest $ and cost us a rookie pick. I think we get overs for Mansell.

I think we have big issues with 7 year contracts for the GWS boys, in particular Hopper who isn't in the top 25 midfielders in the comp.

Yep at tigerland  we seem to fall head over heels over  blokes who have a red hot go but lack in most things.
Play enough of these types and there is a tipping point even during games.

What i saw he played mostly back what a wasted opportunity to get a game into a kid like Brown.

Those in charge are paid big bucks to get the balance right the balance of playing talent over plodders.

I just finished watching a replay and have to say while he laid some good tackles his overall impact on the game was minimal.
He is nothing more than a battler who is getting the best out of his limited talent.

Going to go back to this

As a defender who would you pick him in front of.

Rioli, Broad, Vlastuin, Brown, and even Banks. Im picking TALENTED kids in front of him and the other three are well in front of him.
Another kid who has been injured all year in Kaleb Smith has more talent.

We have to stop playing these types. The long term damage is almost criminal.

As a fwd im playing Cumberland, Bolton, Clarke, Coulthard, and a tall in Bauer in front of him. To pick him in front of any of them is folly.

Did we give him a new contract this year? I thought i read somewhere that we did. If true talk about incompetent list management.

Why are we so keen to keep what is the saying? oh yes role players, By that i take it to mean a player who is lets say a fwd but can only perform one of the  jobs ie pressure  of the many that is  required for the role.

As much as i lke the way he goes about it he just has to go.

Compare the pair... One is a 3-week ban while the other is nothing to see here :huh3.

Arguably there was less time for Mansell to protect himself. Regardless there is very little difference. Certainly not a 3 week penalty.

------------------------------

Woods (AFL): The AFL says that inevitably it was a bump. It's not simply a brace. You actually see him turning to position his body in such a way that his shoulder is tucked in to make forceful contact with McAdam's head. McCartin could've minimised impact by taking shorter steps or not turning his body in the manner he did, and potentially even changing his trajectory, even though it was a split second thing. A reasonable player in those circumstances wouldn't have acted in that way. To come in the way he did was unreasonable.

https://twitter.com/DavidZita1/status/1693880735239897547

----------------------------------------

Tom McCartin has had his two-game rough conduct ban overturned, with the Tribunal ruling the collision that floored Shane McAdam was not a bump.

The Adelaide forward will need surgery after he suffered a depressed cheekbone fracture in the incident.

The Swans successfully argued the collision was an accident, caused by McCartin having to change direction as he was chasing the ball.

"Although when viewed from certain angles this action looks like a bump, we heard McCartin's explanation and looked at the footage and the stills showing all angles, we are not satisfied it was a bump," the Tribunal said in its ruling.

"We find ... that the way in which McCartin responded to a late and sharp change in direction of the ball was not unreasonable.

"There was little else he could reasonably do than himself change direction, decelerate and ride the inevitable impact, which he did."

TIGER SIGNS ON

Rhyan Mansell has secured a new deal to remain at Richmond next season.

The 23-year-old played 17 senior games during a career-best season in 2023, but has been made to wait while the Tigers completed the process to replace Damien Hardwick.

Richmond is understood to be finalising an extension for the Tasmanian for the 2024 season.

Mansell landed a shot at Punt Road ahead of the 2021 season after trialling with the club during the pre-season supplemental selection period before earning a contract.

The North Launceston product has played 32 games in the yellow and black after finally earning an AFL shot after playing in a SANFL premiership for Woodville-West Torrens in 2020. – Josh Gabelich

I wonder what Yze's thoughts are around taggers?

Because I reckon Mansell could be a good tagger. He's got reasonable pace, is good tackler (not that he got rewarded for it very often) and is "in your face" sort player; which is what good taggers do.

Wonder if it's worth a shot?

should have been delisted imho. If he has had a contract extension lately then i think that is wrong.

Not many would argue that he is just a battler. That as a defender he has failed and is behind too many for that role and its exactly the same when he is fwd.

We seem to be unable to move on and are stuck in the past when it comes to the game and how its evolving.

A simple mantra for us would be play the best forwards forward, the best  mids in the midfield and the best defenders in defence.
Mansell does not fall into any of those basic categories. There are better credentialled players than him all over the ground. The trouble has been we have too many just like him and they too have been getting games in roles in front of younger players with better attributes for those roles.

Richmond small forward Rhyan Mansell's day lasted approximately three minutes, with the 23-year-old hobbling off with a right ankle complaint and finishing the game in a moon boot. He will get scans on Monday and while the is hopeful it is a simple rolled ankle, there's a potential for a high ankle sprain. If ruled out of the start of the season, his absence could open the door for a potential debut for Steely Green.

Scans have revealed that forward Rhyan Mansell has suffered a moderate-grade syndesmosis injury.

The injury will rule Mansell out of at least the Opening Round clash against Gold Coast, with the Club to have a clearer picture of his return to play timeline in the coming days.

It's footy not track & field.....might as well just draft Peter Bol if that was the case.... :shh

Who says Coulthard isn't fit, has pace to burn and skills

Big difference between pace and aerobic ability. Doesn’t count for everything but you have to be able to run and run at pace. Against Gold Coast kmac ran 14.5km. Does that excuse his mistakes ? Of course not

There is running , and there is running . Those stats are meaningless.. Robert Harvey had 40 touches a game, and as the great Malcom Blight said, why tag him, let him have it 60 times, he mostly touches the ball where it's irrelevant, just stats chaser . Kmac runs all day for zero efficiency, just to show the stats data he is working hard . Footy is 80% explosive, stop start. Contest to contest . Smart running is more important than how many km you clock ffs

Clarke needs to let his balls drop, still waiting for his voice to break.. Coulthard should be in for McIntosh. Mansell has his liabilities, but he has king size cohonas.. courage and fire.. always has a dip, and that's more valuable to a team full of snags

Sorry to say if that's his only attribute well we're in trouble.

Jake King was twice the footballer this bloke is lol.

If we are going back to the days of picking players who have a dip but aren't a footballer's a-hole then we're truly doomed or just tanking for picks.

We have all these untried kids and they should all be getting a run ahead of hard nut hacks.

Harsh to blame it all on the key forwards regardless of how bad they were.

Take Bolton out of the equation and the rest of the team kicked just 5 goals.

Thought both Rioli and Mansell were pretty ordinary thats despite the 2 goals and a few other things Maurice did.

Just 15 scoring shots from 55 entries shows just how ineffective the whole fwd half was.
