Richmond has selected Matthew Parker from South Fremantle with pick No.10 in tonight's AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft.

Parker comes to the Tigers following a best-on-ground performance for the Bulldogs last weekend, finishing with four goals from 26 possessions, nine marks, six inside-50s and three tackles against West Coast's reserves side in the WAFL.

A fortnight earlier, the 25-year-old kicked two goals representing Western Australia in a state game against South Australia at Adelaide Oval.

Parker played 19 games for St Kilda between 2019 and 2020 after being selected with pick No. 49 in the 2018 AFL National Draft.

Parker's AFL stats at St Kilda (2019-20):

10 disposals, 2.7 marks, 3 tackles & just under a goal per game.

https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/M/Matthew_Parker.html

At the Saints there were question marks over his attitude. Got pushed out of their forward line and side once Dan Butler & Max King was drafted in 2020 alongside Tim Membrey with Marshall/Ryder rotating as ruck-forwards.

This guy was talked about a bit before the PSD.

As above, had big attitude issues. Got dropped on form according to Saints fans on BF and then had a look, thinking he was the ducks nuts and deserved to be playing.

Hope he's grown up a bit.

The highlight reel is worth a look from memory.

Article about his delisting from the Saints:

Parker played 17 games and kicked 16 goals in 2019, but managed just two games this season as he fell behind the likes of recruit Dan Butler in the pecking order.

“This was a really difficult decision to make,” St Kilda head of list management James Gallagher said.

“Matty has such an incredible spirit and it’s easy to see why he was so quickly embraced by Saints fans.

“Unfortunately the situation we find ourselves in demands tough choices, and this was one of them.

“We thank Matty for his dedication to the club and wish nothing but the best for him.”

....Actually I just watched the highlights and yep that’s him.

Well if he’s wearing the great yellow and black and is able to tackle pressure and kick goals he can celebrate any bloody way he wants.

Richmond National Recruiting Manager, Matt Clarke, said Parker’s athleticism made him a target for the Tigers.

“We were looking for someone that could add some really dynamic movement to the way we play, and we like his athletic upside,” he said.

“He has been playing great football as a half-forward/wing, and on ball, so we are really excited to have him.

“He has got great leg speed (and he is) a really good runner. He has got some aerial power and knows how to kick goals as well.

“He did that for the Saints in 2019, and he has obviously been hitting the scoreboard this year as well.”

Clarke added that Parker could push for senior selection this year.

“He has got a developed body, he is a mature player, and he has experienced AFL footy before,” he explained.

“He has played a lot of league footy in the WAFL as well, so there is no reason to suggest he can’t play senior footy this year.”

Arriving at Punt Road will be a reunion of sorts for Parker, a close friend of Richmond’s mid-season draftee from 2019, Marlion Pickett.

“He is very close with Marlion Pickett. Marlion is the one who got him down to South Fremantle and took him under his wing; he has been a mentor to him and also a really good mate.

“Marlion is as excited as anybody (to have Parker at the Club).”

Parker becomes the ninth Indigenous player on Richmond’s list and the fourth from Western Australia.

I like this pick.
  • Athletic
  • Dynamic
  • Mature
  • Has a mate/mentor at the club already
  • Knows it's his last chance
  • Aggression
  • Swagger
  • Fits our profile
  • Ready day 1
Where is the downside?

Downside = was an absolute wanker at Saints and subsequently delisted despite clear talent.

Had a big head, very full of himself.

I hope he's grown a bit and realised that a poor attitude can cost you a career. Last chance saloon!

Nope as I said in an earlier post, just the hearsay.

You do have to wonder though. It would make sense. You draft a kid, he kicks 16 goals in 17 games in his first season, falls out of favour behind Butler in 2020 and his contract is never extended.

So he showed he had talent in his debut year. If he was liked and respected by the club why would they drop him after two years? I'm sure he was a fan favourite but if you connect the dots it makes plenty of sense that there's a personality issue from the club's perspective.

RICHMOND "POPPED UP OUT OF NOWHERE" TO SNARE EX-SAINT

By Alex Zaia
SEN
3 June 2021

Matthew Parker wasn’t expecting reigning premiers Richmond to throw him an AFL lifeline in the mid-season draft.

Delisted by St Kilda late last year, Parker now calls Punt Road home after the Tigers snapped up the South Fremantle forward with pick No.10 in Wednesday night’s draft.

“They spoke to me once, but it was brief. It wasn’t too much,” Parker told Sportsday WA.

“I wasn’t expecting too much leading into it so I’m pretty pumped and surprised.

“There wasn’t much talk … no clubs approached me. It was pretty low key and they (Richmond) just popped up out of nowhere. It was great.”

Parker says he returned to South Fremantle with a point to prove after he was let go by the Saints.

The 25-year-old kicked four goals and collected 26 disposals against West Coast reserves last week and recently represented the WAFL in a state game against the SANFL, kicking two goals.

“I took it (St Kilda delisting) on the chin,” Parker said.

“Came back to Souths with a chip on my shoulder and let my footy do the talking. It’s been a pretty good year so far, now it’s time to do the hard yards even more.”

Parker will reunite with close friend and former South Fremantle star Marlion Pickett at Punt Road.

Pickett, a mid-season draft selection in 2019, made his Richmond debut in the Grand Final win over GWS that same year and is now a two-time premiership player.

“It (mid-season draft) can change people’s lives,” Parker said.

“You look at Marlion for instance, he’s already got two flags and it’s just changed his life because of the mid-season draft.”

These mid season draft picks are a free hit essentially. If he works out great you’ve gotten a player in on minimum coin without having to a trade a player for him or give up any decent draft pick. If it doesn’t work out you delist him and all you’ve lost is minimum salary payments and a mid season draft pick where the vast majority of selections likely won’t make it.

A bit of a left of field thought but did we recruit Parker because he is of a similar type to Jacob Townsend v.2017?

Would be a handy match-up on a Tom Stewart or Jake Lever who both want to peel off and play as a loose intercepting defender. Against Melbourne and Geelong they both had the better of us playing on one of our small forwards rather than a midsized Tiger who could match-up on them physically and make them accountable in the air and at ground level.

Saint supporters' views:

Quote
He did go missing a fair bit at VFL level, didn't quite take that next step in his development but was very raw from the get-go. Didn't get many opportunities last year with Covid but was OK when he came in. Think he was very unlucky to be delisted.

Quote from: Ephemeral Hope
Good player just not consistent enough and got squeezed out by covid cuts. Highlights package make him look like a super star. Would bob up for a highlight then not touch the ball for 3 quarters. Really liked his potential. Hope he kills it for you guys

Quote from: hayes
Out of contract at the wrong time mostly. Was a strange delisting after his 2019 season. He’ll fit right in at the Tigers IMO.

Quote from: Munga
Same reason we let Hickey go for Hannebery and Hind go for nothing, we like seeing quality walk out the door to be charitable to the opposition. Parker has the tools. We put a lot of training into these guys to play any other position than what they're good at. So thank us later.

Quote from: LeonardHayes87
Good on him. Hope he knuckles down and makes the most of the second chance after he said he’d take his first with both hands. Apparently made a tool of himself during his second year with us.

That’s what we need, in our forward line to stop defenders walking it out like it’s circle work

Yep. Smalls have been a disgrace all year. No accountability. Used to lock it in there big time, now it's like a training drill.

Cmon Georgies your missing the point. He must be the lesser of two evils when it comes to Castagna. They carry on about Castagna's tackling and pressure which is virtually non existent at least Parker is tackling.

Having said that i still think they should have gone with Blake Schlensog we could do with a real KPD atm and i reckon the kid can play.

I dont get it the only reason you would take a bloke like Parker basically a medium fwd in the draft is you dont think the small mediums we have are doing the job.
And here we are we have a mature 25 yr old not getting a game and the small forwards we have continue to stink it up but clearly the club are happy. We didnt need another small medium forward fmd IMO we have so many who can play thru there instead of the spuds we do play.
What we lack in is Talls capable of playing KPD AND kpf.

Former Saint Matt Parker will make his Richmond debut against Brisbane on Friday night.

The Tigers on Thursday confirmed The Age’s report that Parker, delisted by the Saints at the end of last season but re-drafted by the Tigers in the middle of the year, will line up against the Lions.

Richmond National Recruiting Manager, Matt Clarke said it was Parker’s athleticism that made him stand out to Tigers officials.

“We were looking for someone that could add some really dynamic movement to the way we play, and we like his athletic upside,” he said.

"He has got great leg speed (and he is) a really good runner. He has got some aerial power and knows how to kick goals as well.”

Speaking to Richmond Media earlier in the week, VFL Tigers playing assistant coach, Steve Morris praised Parker's performance in last Sunday's tight loss to Collingwood where he collected 24 disposals, six inside-50s, six marks and laid eight tackles.

"'MP' put great pressure on and once again was an important part of our midfield. He brought others into the game with the use of his hands which was also great to see."

Happy for him to go hard at the ball & opposition but he has to remain disciplined. Last thing we need is another Tiger giving away silly frees.

Interesting to see where we play Parker tonight. I'd like to see him play as a defensive forward locking down one of the Lions interceptors a la the Townsend 2017 role.

He was marginally off the pace but gee you can really tell the difference between him (older and previously AFL listed) and our other junior players. He 100% has the attributes. And it sounds from Dimma like we are planning to keep him in 2022 (something about we debut'd him earlier than we wanted while he was still learning our structures etc).

Anyway I think he looks the goods and is immediately better than several other blokes we've seen this year.

Dimma's full comments on Parker:

“I thought he was really good,” Hardwick said.

“He’s quite dynamic, Matty.

“The things he does in and around the contest are really strong.

“He wins the ball, he uses it really well.

“We probably played him a little bit earlier than we thought because there’s some structure and system stuff he’s still learning.

“But he was pretty dynamic through the middle of the ground and then he went forward and provided a good conduit at various stages as well.

“So, it was a really promising debut, and we’re looking forward to him to continue with that next week versus Geelong, hopefully.”

Matthew Parker over his four senior appearances averages 14.2 disposals, 3.2 inside-50s, 4.8 score involvements, 5.8 tackles and 310.2 metres gained per match and has added some important energy to the Richmond side.

Parker produced another robust performance against North Melbourne at the MCG last Saturday, finishing with 14 disposals, three inside-50s, seven score involvements, four tackles and 295 metres gained.

In the first half of that contest, when the Tigers were really struggling, Parker was one of their few players who could have held his head high.

HOW RICHMOND RECRUIT’S WAFL RETURN CAME ABOUT

By Andrew Slevison
SEN
9 September 2021

South Fremantle coach Todd Curley said the rule was always in place for a player to return to his former club at season’s end.

“All the way through since the mid-season draft came in there was the rule in there that if the boys got picked and their AFL team doesn’t make finals there was the ability for them to go back and play with their club,” Curley explained on SEN’s Bob & Andy.

“We’re lucky, we’ve got a pretty good relationship that we’ve built up with the Tigers over the last few years with some players and a lot of discussion.

“When we put it to them they were very supportive. Matt is desperate to play and had already been back in Perth, so it’s a no-brainer from our end. It’s a rule that’s there and the kid should play.

“Once the season ended, Matty’s family organised themselves to come back. Because they’ve only been there for a short time, they’re still WA residents, so made their own way back.

“It’s only the last four or five days that we’ve really started to think about the possibility of getting him back to play with us. Once those discussions happened with Richmond it all moved pretty quickly.”

The South Fremantle-Richmond relationship has been in full effect for a few years now, highlighted by the Tigers’ inspired 2019 mid-season draft selection of Marlion Pickett.

Curley says the partnership has only grown stronger since.

“The Tigers have been fantastic,” he added.

“We haven’t been able to move freely between the states for a while, but we were lucky enough to be there in 2019 when Marlion played in the Grand Final.

“The efforts of Blair Hartley and the Richmond footy club to involve us and get us to training and those sort of things were fantastic.

“It’s built from there.”

The Bulldogs coach admits there were some happy teammates once the news of Parker’s return was confirmed.

“All I saw was a lot of smiling faces when we announced that he was going to come back and play,” Curley said further.

“He’s one of ours and he’s one of our leaders and we’re rapt to get him back.”

Curley says Parker will operate in a variety of roles including as a deep forward, a high forward and in the midfield.

Parker, who will not play this weekend because of quarantine, will return to Punt Road at the conclusion of the WAFL season.

The former St Kilda forward was in superb form in the WAFL earlier this year, averaging 20 disposals and four tackles across seven matches.

South Fremantle and Claremont clash at the Fremantle Community Bank Oval from 2:40pm (AWST) on Saturday, with minor premier Subiaco awaiting the winner in next weekend’s Preliminary Final.

West Perth and Swan Districts meet in the Elimination Final on Sunday, with the winner to take on the loser of the South Fremantle-Claremont match.

Offer him a rookie position as he is not best 22 if all are fit.
Plus side

Big tank
Agile
Big tackler

Minus side

Kicking
Not strong in one one one contests
Still doesn't understand all of our system

We use to call this type of player a list clogger as there is not a lot of scope for improvement bar the understanding of our system.

South Fremantle were comfortably beaten by Subiaco but Parker was named in their bests and was their second highest disposal winner.

Matt Parker:
26 disposals (19 kicks, 7 hballs)
7 marks
10 tackles
4 inside 50s
5 FF
3 FA

Lets say we do nothing but get Tarrant and we get Chol compensation AROUND 39 and lets be conservative realistic  38 for CC-J.

Would we be willing to use any of the following picks on Parker

7, 15, 26,28,38,39,40,44. If it's a choice between useing one of those picks or keeping parker then i want the pick.

That is eight picks plus tarrant someone has to make way if we are dinkum about useing them all.

Just not skilled enough and another role player in a long list of role players.

There are a couple of clubs that need points for father and sons. I am sure we could bundle some of the later ones up for a lower pick or next year as you say.

Depends on what we get for Chol and CCJ.
You'd be hoping for:
50 for Chol, 3rd rounder with a slip from bids
38 for CCJ, if North play nice

If that's the case then then I would be trading all of 38, 40, 44 & 50 to WB for #17. Hit the draft with 7, 15, 17, 26, 28.

Or

Throw in #28 also to Collingwood for 2022 1st (backing them in to finish bottom 6) and Brayden Sier who they'll let go for pick 50.

Draft with 7, 15, 26. Bring in Sier for almost nothing. Then have 2 first rounders for 2022.

We’d be net losing 504 points with that trade, the equivalent to pick 36. Think we’d give 3 more of the 4 or trade up even higher than 17. All of those picks are essentially worth pick 8-9.

I'm sure we could tinker with it. Needs to be worth their while to bother, but also good enough that they won't do a similar deal with anyone else.

Initially I was thinking 28 + 40 + 44 which gives them about 250-300 but I'm just spit balling.

LIFELINE EXTENDED FOR TIGER

RICHMOND mid-season draftee Matthew Parker has committed to a new one-year deal to remain at Punt Road in 2022.

The 25-year-old was plucked out of South Fremantle in June, having been delisted by St Kilda after a two-season stint last year.

Parker's agent, Anthony Van Der Wielen of Empire Sports Management, confirmed his client would soon ink a fresh contract to remain on the rookie list into next season.

Parker played the final six games of the season for the Tigers as a midfielder/half-forward.

The WA native returned to Perth at the end of Richmond's campaign and was given clearance to play for South Fremantle in the WAFL finals. After a quiet return against Claremont in week one of finals, Parker collected 26 disposals and 10 tackles in the Bulldogs' loss to Subiaco on Saturday.

His side will again face Claremont on Sunday for a place in the WAFL Grand Final against Subiaco.

Parker's signature will leave Richmond with seven players out of contract. Sydney Stack is expected to ink a new deal, but Derek Eggmolesse-Smith, Noah Cumberland and a trio of key backs – Bigoa Nuyon, Ryan Garthwaite and Ben Miller – all remain unsigned.

The Tigers have committed to bringing in North Melbourne veteran Robbie Tarrant on a two-year deal to replace the retiring David Astbury. - Mitch Cleary

this is not the thread for it but anyway.

I agree i think we are in the box seat for WB pick 17. I also think we are one of the few clubs in a position to get Collingwoods 2022 first rounder

I think 38 40 44 can get the dogs done

26 or 28 and next years second for Collingwoods 2022 first. 26  is a high enough pick for Collingwood to split with other clubs for Daicos.

We end up with 7, 15, 17, 26 or 28, 39 and bank two first rounders for next year.

Do they still count them if they stick the tackle but the opponent still gets his arms free and disposed of it? I don’t think picketts tackling which at best is slightly better than those around him makes up for his disposal. Now jack graham, that’s a lad who is an elite tackler.

No. Tackles only count if there is a clanger disposal, ineffective disposal, or no disposal.

Richmond’s mid-season recruit, Matthew Parker, will remain at the Club for the 2022 season.

Richmond General Manager- Football Talent, Blair Hartley, said Parker thoroughly deserved the extension.

“Matt did not put a foot wrong after he joined us mid-year, as demonstrated by his quick elevation to the senior team,” he said.

“We are excited to be able to keep him around for 2022 and look forward to seeing a lot more of him in Richmond colours.

“It is a credit to the work he has done behind the scenes to get himself back in a position to tackle a full AFL season ahead.”

Matt Parker stared at AFL mortality. Now Tigers are praying lightning will strike twice

By Josh Gabelich
afl.com.au
16 February 2022

MATT Parker didn’t hear back from Blair Hartley. The pair met for coffee inside an Adelaide hotel midway through last year the day before Parker kicked two goals for Western Australia in the state game against South Australia. The Tigers had a spot available in the mid-season rookie draft, but Hartley kept his cards close to his chest.

The next time Richmond's general manager of football talent contacted the West Australian was shortly after the Tigers pounced at pick No.10 in last year's mid-season rookie draft. No other club had shown interest in Parker, but the Tigers decided to go back to the well that produced Marlion Pickett and try and see if lightning could strike twice.

Six months on from being cut adrift from St Kilda, after playing 19 games across two seasons, Parker was back in Melbourne and back in the AFL. And it didn’t take him long to earn a spot in Damien Hardwick's team, where he remained for the final six games of 2021.

Many in the industry – including some inside Moorabbin – were surprised Parker had been delisted after such a bright start to his career. But with small children a long way from home, the hub was more challenging for some than for others in 2020.

Now there is a belief that being forced to return to South Fremantle and face his AFL mortality could prove to be the making of Parker. The 26-year-old didn’t sulk when he didn’t get another deal at St Kilda. Instead, he returned to Perth a more mature version than the one who left two years earlier and let his football do the talking.

"I think it was a good lesson for me getting delisted by St Kilda," Parker - who took his career tally to 25 games in 2021 - told AFL.com.au last week.

"I went back and just worked on my game and had that attitude that I wanted to prove everybody wrong and get back to where I wanted to be. If you don’t like it then that’s on you, but I'm going to put my best foot forward.

"There were some things behind the scenes that didn’t work out. I copped it on the chin and went back and put my best foot forward for Souths and took that attitude that I'm never going to give up – which I never will – lucky enough Richmond picked me up."

Parker didn’t have to look too far for a familiar face when he arrived at Punt Road. Pickett is practically family. The pair played together at South Fremantle alongside West Coast star Tim Kelly – who dragged Parker from C-grade amateur football down to South Fremantle ahead of 2017 – and have ridden some of life's bumps together.

Now they live down the road from each other in Thornbury, helping provide their kids – Pickett has four, Parker now has three after the recent arrival of his daughter – with a strong sense of family while living on the other side of the country, which has felt like the other side of the world during the pandemic.

"Marlion and I played at Souths together then I went and he came over. It's a bit of a coincidence that we've ended up here together," Parker said.

"My journey started with him so there was a bit of a brotherly love moment there. He's always been the big brother I never had; I've always said that. I'm always there for him. Obviously we don’t have much family over here so we're always getting around the kids, the nephews and nieces. We're always around each other having a laugh."

Before Parker packed up his life and moved back to Melbourne last June, he had to go back to Safety Bay Senior High School in southern Perth to collect his belongings from the staffroom, much to the delight of footy mad students who were pumped to see him get another opportunity in the AFL.

In a sign of his growth away from football, Parker found employment as an Aboriginal Islander Education Officer, which didn’t go unnoticed by those at South Fremantle. It not only helped him pay the bills, it also helped him give back to those who had walked a similar path to him growing up. And it sure as hell beat the back-breaking holes he used to dig for an underground gas company when he first played for Souths.

"I just wanted to try something different and try help some young kids and Indigenous kids and create a pathway. Obviously don’t take the hard route when you've got an easy route there, you've got the opportunities now while you're young, so take it. That brought me a bit of joy," he said.

"Some kids have it harder than other kids, so to help them with what I've been through and give them a bit of advice, if they take it they take it, the advice is always there. When I ended up getting picked up and seeing the kids smiles when I went back to pick up my stuff was pretty awesome. It was really special."

Quote
If I could swear and say what I want, I would, but I'm very grateful for the opportunity Richmond have given me. Now I've got a point to prove

- Matt Parker

South Fremantle Football Club is a massive part of Parker and Pickett's story. Without the influence of coach Todd Curley and many involved at the Bulldogs, including their manager, Anthony Van Der Wielen, from Empire Sports Management, Parker and Pickett wouldn’t be playing in the AFL. It is a big reason why Parker decided to go back to Perth at the end of last season to try and help South Fremantle win a second consecutive premiership.

In a move that would have been unfathomable before the pandemic, Richmond temporarily released Parker to play for the WAFL club in the finals after reaching an agreement with the West Australian Football Commission. The Bulldogs fell just short, but Parker played all four finals, ending a wild season in red and white, where it started six months earlier.

Now Parker finds himself at another football club with a rich Indigenous history, both past and present, one that embraces multiculturalism. With Maurice and Daniel Rioli, Shane Edwards, Sydney Stack, Shai Bolton and Pickett all at the Swinburne Centre, as well as Xavier Clarke coaching the VFL program, not many clubs are as well represented as the Tigers.

Six games was a strong start for Parker in 2022, but it's only a start. Now he has his heart set on playing more and proving to St Kilda they made a mistake giving him the flick.

"If I could swear and say what I want, I would, but I'm very grateful for the opportunity Richmond have given me. Now I've got a point to prove," he said.

"I don’t get many opportunities; I had it taken away from me so quick, so I'm just trying to stay here as long as I can.

"Forty-four players want to play round one as well. We all want to play round one. You've got to do the hard work now and hopefully it pays off with a game in round one. If it's not round one, I'll keep working away. No point putting your head down or not believing in yourself, you've got to stay confident and when it comes, take it with both hands. Coming off six games can hopefully lead to more."

Now Parker and Hartley work in the same building. They cross paths almost every day. Life has changed enormously for Parker since they sat down for a latte in Adelaide.

Dimma post-game talking about Matty Parker:

"Yeah he was good. He wins the ball and is quite dynamic. He's quite hard to play on as he can play at ground level but also be explosive in the air. So he's playing some really good footy. There's things he does very well and there's also some areas in his game like most players we'd like him to get better at. He's working on those. He was a contributor tonight and he had a good game last week as well and we like what he brings."

Not a fan, has no upside. He’d be decent depth if we were in premiership window. But he’s just taking a kids spot right now

He went alright for mine, showed a lot of courage winning contested ball, slotted goals, and shone where others wilted in a flogging. fmd what else can you ask of a bargain recruit?

Im with Simonator looking long term. But im with you atm he has had two good games and it would be unfair to drop atm. Thats not the message we need to send.
There are plenty of more highly rated blokes atm who need a kick up the arse and games in the two's.

yep agree always the trouble his disposal and panic attacks,  came back to bite hard.
Even the most one eyed supporter must realise he is taking games away from a younger player and he is not the way fwd.

What i don't get is people will complain about this bloke but tolerate the same sort of things from  Castagna.

I’m not a huge advocate for Georgie but to compare his output to Parker over their careers is laughable

Playing in 3 premierships vs being recruited as a mature aged recruit from the WAFL tends to give you some leeway…..

Really lets say the timing of when they coame to the club was reversed.

Bottom line Castagna survived because he could bring one needed requirement to a team structure. At no other club with out that structure at any time was such an unskilled player going to get the free ride he has got at Richmond.

Suddenly that structure no longer works. and because george was in the right place at the right time and became one of the worst premiership players of all time because that structure no longer works his short comings are amplified.

Look i love our premiership players but fmd we did have a few bloody ordinary ones win medals.

Claw you are bang on the money here

George will be forever a legend of our club, you can't not be with 3 flags. But he was a successful role player in a specific system that is no longer effective. The system has evolved and we find him playing as a midfield, of which he is not one. Play a kid or trade for a player that can fill our needs.

So what role would Parker have played in the 2017-2020 era? None. His role is now as it would’ve been back then. As a top up player while we had injuries.

Say it again if Parker is getting games along with Aarts it isn't a great sign both limited footballers taking spots from kids.

Agree - I think Castagna has proved a useful defensive forward so he is a pass for me.

The rest being Aarts, Ross, Parker, Graham and I would add McIntosh and Miller to that list also are not AFL standard footballers.  We are an ordinary team now because our bottom 5 aren't up to it.

Add in Riewoldt and Edwards who look like they should have retired at the end of last year and that's 8 players who are not performing.  We are a bottom 6 team for a reason

I don’t understand your hatred of Miller. He’s a KPD with a total of 4 games under his belt. You may end up being right but it’s far too early to make that call - I wonder what you thought of rance 4 games in?

Saying Mcintosh isn't AFL is kinda ridiculous. 2 flags and over 100 games. Don't get me wrong I'm not one of those dribblers who yap on about how he's just this wonderful player that the coach couldn't cope without, but he's not that bad. I'd like to upgrade on him but yeah, let's at least keep the criticism in the real world

I’ve been to club functions where the club and players rate him as one of the first picked. They say He is a lock down gut runner who is important for stopping the opposition winger from running rampant . What would they know anyway

do you reckon it's worth attempting to find someone that can play that role who can also offer something offensively?

MATTHEW Parker has called time on his Richmond career, choosing to head back to his home state of Western Australia.

He and the club mutually agreed to part ways after Parker, his partner and his three young children struggled with life in Melbourne, away from support networks in WA.

The 26-year-old played 11 games for the Tigers after being selected in the 2021 NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft. It was his second stint at an AFL club following two years at St Kilda from 2019-2020.

Parker has played a total of 30 AFL games and kicked 23 goals.

Wish him all the best. Gave all his effort and was obviously limited in talent but you cannot question his commitment, uprooting his family etc.

I'd have liked another MSD this year to see if we could find another diamond in the rough but either way it's good to be clearly some spots before the end of the year. Edwards to follow and surely some delistings as well.

Parker said he was forever grateful to the Club for allowing him the opportunity to play AFL football again.

“I have made some lifelong friends at Richmond and have made many great memories during my time in the yellow and black,” he said.

“This Club and its supporters will hold a special place in my heart. ‘Dimma’ and the people at our Club always say family comes first, and living away from home has not always been easy for me.

“Now is a time that I must put my family first and return home to Perth with my partner and three children.”

Richmond General Manager- Football Talent, Blair Hartley wished Parker and his family well for the future.

“This is a decision Matthew has not made lightly, but family comes first, and we appreciate that,” he said.

“We thank him for his contribution to our Club and wish him and his family all the best.”
