This is a good draft hand to start with. Id like us to trade for 2 more picks inside 30.

The player your AFL club should consider taking with their first 2022 draft pick

Ben Waterworth
Fox Sports
July 13th, 2022

RICHMOND

Draft picks: 11, 19, 29

List state of play:

The Tigers need another star midfielder, particularly considering Kane Lambert’s long-term hip issue and that Trent Cotchin remains one of their best clearance players. While Shai Bolton, Jayden Short and Liam Baker are all stepping up, the Tigers are still ranked 15th for contested possession differential.

Ideal draft prospects:

Assuming most of the big inside ball-winners are gone by the Tigers’ pick, there should be still plenty of gun mids to choose from. Victorian duo Cam Mackenzie and Mitch Szybkowski have shown how capable they are as ball-winning midfielders, while SA’s Mattaes Phillipou continues to impress with every game he plays. A wildcard would be WA’s Reuben Ginbey — a 188cm prospect that’s been playing in defence for East Perth but in the midfield for WA in the champs, averaging 20.0 disposals and 10.5 contested possessions.

A few key forwards that should be in our range - Cadman, Jefferson and Lemmey. Obviously things can change but if we don't trade someone like Fogarty in then we should draft two of those blokes. At least one if we do trade in Fog or a similar forward.

If we’re chasing a big inside mid we should be looking at Paul Pascu from Calder Cannons.
183cm and 85kg’s he’s an inside bull who can also go forward and have an impact ala Dusty.
Has fallen off the radar a little and would be a steal at at pick #29 :shh

Considering the depth of talent across the first two rounds of the 2022 draft, this could be the year some clubs opt to split their top pick into multiple selections.

A question for the draft guru's.

What is the points equivalent of pick's 19 & 30 if they were combined ?

Eg. would that be pick 5 or 6 ?

An alternative approach to the split, could be a chance to consolidate and move up the draft order for talent, particularly with the strategic value of pick 19.

But only in points to someone needing them. As picks I don't think any club would trade 8 for those two.

Could we trade those two picks and Stack for WC # 2 pick???

We'd have to trade our entire draft hand I reckon (12, 19, 30) and I don't think that'd be enough either.

Personally I'd love to get into the top 5 if we can to draft a highly rated key forward like Cadman at 196/88, or even a top 10 pick for a guy like Jefferson at 195/78.

Stack won't be worth anything to anyone. Has consistently shown up to pre-season out of shape and hasn't managed to break into our team despite a middling home & away season.

Would be very challenging to trade up the draft if we are giving away picks for Taranto.

Great finish. Vic Metro won by 7. I didn't watch all of it but it looked a decent standard game especially for U18s. Can see why both teams came into the game undefeated.

Aaron Cadman is the next best after Ashcroft goes as F/S to Brisbane. Looks the next 10+ year full forward at AFL level. Norf will be idiots if they don't grab him. They could even avoid going through the charade of bidding for Ashcroft. Just take Cadman as the No.1 pick and run.

The kid who stood out the most though was Harley Reid  :o. Underage so ineligible for this year's draft but he'll be No.1 next year. Can play anywhere. Even seen draft watchers claiming he's the next Dusty :o.

Others that stood out from what I saw:
Metro - Tsatas, Sheezel, Jefferson. Petric had a strong last quarter when the game was on the line (clever goal out of nothing too).
Country - Konstanty, Hollands, Murdoch, Knobel.

Hopefully there's a replay online as it was worth watching again.

ps. Hopefully too about the rumours that we want to keep hold of pick 19 are true. Should be able to select a decent kid.

Ashcroft - 29 disposals, five clearances and 10 inside-50s (Larke Medal).
Tsatas - 30 disposals and five clearances.
Jefferson (195cm key forward) - 2 goals (kicked 7 against WA).
Reid - 19 disposals, 7 marks and 2 last quarter goals after being moved forward.
Cadman - 3 goals.
Hollands - 23 disposals, 7 marks.
Binns - 21 disposals and a goal.
Humphrey - 11 disposals, 1.3 goals.

A little change up in the rankings, this is a very tough draft to seperate and doing it in number order just doesn’t seem right. This will carry over to next month and my final list in November will be a phantom draft rather than rankings.

ESPN's early two-round phantom draft for 2022 - every pick of the first two rounds

Chris Doerre
ESPN
28 September 2022

Throughout 2022, ESPN.com.au AFL draft expert Chris Doerre has cast his eye over the country's best junior footballers to give readers an early insight into the next generation of AFL stars. He's released his latest two-round phantom draft.

A note from Chris: "With this phantom draft appearing before the trade period, it is important to note many of these picks will be moving - in what may be the busiest trade period yet. Nonetheless, this phantom draft should provide early insight into who some of this year's top prospects are, how they play, and showcase where some of this year's top-rated father-son, academy and next-generation academy prospects are rated.".

1. Brisbane (matching North Melbourne's bid) - Will Ashcroft (Brisbane - F/S)
Will, the son of Brisbane great Marcus, has agreed to become a father-son selection for the Lions meaning Brisbane will match any bid for the talented youngster. A Round 1-ready midfielder who requires no time to develop, Will has dominated against all competition, headlined by his average of 29.3 disposals, 7.3 tackles and five clearances for Brisbane in the VFL. Will stands out with the volume of his contested ball winning and the frequency with which he bursts 5-15 metres out of stoppages.

2. North Melbourne - George Wardlaw
Wardlaw is a contested beast who does his best work at stoppages. A powerful first possession winner, Wardlaw absorbs and fends off opposition tacklers with ease. Wardlaw is a reliable distributor by hand from stoppages and defensively displays an unmatched level of commitment and effort which sets him apart.

3. West Coast - Elijah Tsatas
The premier loose ball-winning midfielder in this draft, Tsatas is routinely first to the ball and wins it on the move at speed. Tsatas has an established reputation for the ease and speed with which he breaks the lines, with his acceleration and evasion of opponents on the move a highlight.

4. GWS Giants - Aaron Cadman
The premier key forward in this year's draft, Cadman has demonstrated rapid improvement and has separated himself from the pack with the variety of ways with which he impacts games and takes advantage of rival key defenders. Cadman is a strong contested mark, creates separation on the lead, is powerful over ground balls, dangerous close to goal, and adept when pushing further afield.

5. Essendon - Harry Sheezel
One of this year's premier forwards, Sheezel demonstrates goal sense, sets up teammates forward of centre, takes contested marks, and is also a ground level threat inside 50. Also effective through the midfield, Sheezel wins first possession at stoppages, displays classy ball use and his deceptive agility and change of pace often catches opponents off guard.

6. Adelaide - Jhye Clark
Playing taller than his height, Clark is not only adept winning the contested ball through the midfield but is also a strong overhead mark who can push forward and provide a target. A complete midfielder, Clark displays a promising inside/outside midfield balance by winning and tackling on the inside, while his composure, tidy skills, and high work rate on the outside is notable.

7. Hawthorn - Cameron Mackenzie
Despite being a Saints Academy prospect, St Kilda will not have first access to Mackenzie as bids for Next-Generation Academy prospects can no longer be matched inside the top-40. A balanced and well-rounded midfielder, Mackenzie is a strong contested ball winner and is equally adept receiving the ball on the move at stoppages, where he displays quickness and evasion. He also hurts the opposition by foot by placing his kicks out in front of his targets to lead onto.

8. Gold Coast - Mattaes Phillipou
The son of former Footscray player Sam, Mattaes is a 192cm, dual position impact player who is arguably this year's most damaging prospect through the midfield and up forward. Through the midfield, Phillipou is a first possession winner who bursts out of stoppages at speed and demonstrates class with ball in hand. As a forward he provides a marking presence, hits the scoreboard at will, and sets up teammates inside 50 with precise entry kicks.

9. Port Adelaide - Jedd Busslinger
The most advanced key defender in this draft, Busslinger is an elite intercept mark who reads the ball early in flight and attacks the footy well in the air. With ball in hand, Busslinger is a composed and reliable ball user, while defensively he is competitive and able to curb the influence of his direct opponent.

10. St Kilda - Matthew Jefferson
An athletic, high-flying key forward, Jefferson is one of the best readers of the ball in flight in this draft, and is a marking force forward of centre. Providing heavy scoreboard impact during the Under-18 Championships headlined by seven goals for Vic Metro against Western Australia, Jefferson does not need to find much of the football to put points on the board.

11. Carlton - Bailey Humphrey
After missing Victoria Country's first three Under-18 Championships matches due to knee surgery, Humprey has starred since returning and has established himself as one of this year's most damaging dual position impact players. Up forward, Humphrey is a contested marking force and strong over ground balls while through the midfield he is a powerful contested ball winner with the strength to break tackles at will.

12. Western Bulldogs - Oliver Hollands
The younger brother of Gold Coast's Elijah, Oliver Hollands is one of the elite endurance athletes and two-way runners in this year's draft. A midfielder with a balanced inside/outside game, Hollands can push through the midfield and win his own ball, is a composed and classy user of the football by hand and foot, creates time and space for himself in traffic, and covers substantial ground over the course of a game.

13. Richmond - Elijah Hewett
A big game performer, Hewett is a strong contested ball winning midfielder who displays power when exiting stoppages. Hewett possesses speed, agility, evasion, and is an aerial marking threat. Damaging when he secures the ball forward of centre, Hewett places kicks out in front of targets and is a dangerous finisher around goal.

14. Brisbane (matching Fremantle's bid) - Jaspa Fletcher (F/S)
The son of 231-gamer Adrian, Jaspa is not only a father-son eligible prospect for Brisbane but has also been part of their Academy. Jaspa plays his best football on the outside, taking on the game with his speed and breaking games open with his run and carry and long and precise kicks.

15. Fremantle - Reuben Ginbey
A tall, big-bodied, ball-winning midfielder with power and acceleration away from stoppages, Ginbey won the Western Australian MVP during the Under-18 Championships. A consistent performer, Ginbey has a powerful build and distributes effectively by hand. He also possesses the strength to stand up through and break tackles.

16. Essendon (Matching Sydney's bid) - Alwyn Davey Jr (Essendon F/S)
The son of former Essendon forward Alwyn, Davey Jr plays his best football forward and displays blistered speed, agility, and evasion with ball in hand. He is freakish at ground level, is dangerous both as a crumber and when a loose ball is there to be won, routinely makes something special happen with ball in hand, and applies good forward pressure, often providing second and third efforts.

17. Sydney - Henry Hustwaite
The younger brother of Collingwood VFL co-captain Campbell, Henry is a 194cm stoppage specialist. Hustwaite is not only one of this year's best contested ball-winning midfielders but is also a reliable inside distributor who demonstrates composure in traffic. Hustwaite is a rapid improver with substantial upside who has benefitted from a late growth spurt.

18. Collingwood - Lewis Hayes
The younger brother of Port Adelaide's Sam, Lewis Hayes is a rapidly improving key defender and one of this draft's youngest. A high-volume intercept marking key defender, Hayes involves himself regularly as a rebounder from defence. He demonstrates tidy skills and displays great mobility for someone his height.

19. Sydney - Isaac Keeler
Part of Adelaide's Next-Generation Academy, the Crows will not have first access to Keeler if a bid is placed on him inside the top 40. A high-leaping, smooth moving athlete at 198cm, Keeler is dangerous around goal, can push high up the field, and displays impressive one-touch cleanliness at ground level. Arguably 2022's most freakish key forward, Keeler is also able to provide relieving minutes through the ruck.

20. Geelong - Josh Weddle
A 'third defender' who possesses the height, strength, and leap to play tall and the speed to stick with dangerous small forwards. Weddle is a capable intercept mark, and the run and dare he displays from defence is a strength, even if it's uncommon for someone his height and type.

21. Richmond - Coby Burgiel
A versatile and speedy midfielder who hits the scoreboard and wins his own ball, Burgiel displays the versatility to play an inside or outside role or up forward. What stands out most with Burgiel is how natural he is with ball in hand in general play, and how rarely he needs to break stride whether marking or receiving by hand on the move.

22. West Coast - Brayden George
A strong-bodied, powerful forward, George plays a high impact-per-possession game. He hurts opponents by foot around the ground and does not need to find a lot of the ball to hit the scoreboard heavily. Proficient both overhead and at ground level, George is a marking threat one-on-one, aerially and on the lead, while at ground level he is a one-touch player and a powerful contested ball winner.

23. GWS Giants - Jacob Konstanty
As dangerous as any small forward in this year's draft around goal, Konstanty wreaks havoc both at ground level and as a marking target. While Konstanty is a weapon offensively, his speed, forward pressure and tackling inside 50 are also notable strengths.

24. Adelaide - Harry Barnett
This year's most highly-touted ruckman, Barnett is a contested marking weapon whether pushing forward or behind the ball. Though the middle, Barnett is an effective tap ruckman, but what separates Barnett at ruck contests is his strength to win the ball himself out of the ruck before disposing of the football.

25. Hawthorn - Mitch Szybkowski
A strong ball-winning midfielder, Szybkowski is one of this draft's better inside distributors, with his work by hand arguably the best in the draft. Possessing good speed, Szybkowski spreads well from stoppages, covers a lot of ground, displays agility, and, when given the time and space, places his kicks accurately out in front of targets.

26. GWS Giants - Olli Hotton
A dual position player who impacts games through the midfield and up forward, Hotton is a dangerous matchup across both positions. Through the midfield, Hotton wins first possession at stoppages and evades opponents with speed and agility. As a forward, Hotton is an aerial threat, and demonstrates a high work rate. He also crumbs well at ground level.

27. West Coast - Darcy Jones
A small but speedy outside midfielder, Jones breaks the lines and takes on the game with an unmatched level of dash and dare, displaying rare speed and agility. While Jones plays a high impact-per-possession game, he also finds and wins a good amount of his own ball.

28. St Kilda - Noah Long
Damaging both as a forward and midfielder, Long's burst of speed and work at ground level are his strengths. When used through the midfield, Long often wins first possession and bursts out of stoppages at speed, while as a forward, he is dynamic, a natural crumber, and talented finisher around goal.

29. Carlton - Jaxon Binns
One of this draft's elite endurance runners, Binns is a midfielder who runs all day and accumulates disposals at will. While best utilised on a wing, Binns is also dangerous when he pushes forward, with his agility, evasion, ground level work and finishing around goal notable.

30. Western Bulldogs - Charlie Clarke
A speedy small forward, Clarke is one of the better crumbing forwards in this draft. Clarke plays with an infectious energy, applies good forward pressure and is not just a freakish finisher who can hit the scoreboard in bunches - but is also effective setting up teammates for shots on goal.

31. Richmond - Jakob Ryan
A well-rounded medium defender, Ryan's greatest strength is his intercepting capabilities with his biggest threats being the ability to take intercept marks and win intercept possessions at ground level. A capable rebounder from defence, Ryan can generate drive both by foot and with his run and carry.

32. Gold Coast - Lachlan Cowan
A rebounding defender who generates meaningful drive from defence, Cowan is a damaging long kick and has the speed to break the lines. A prolific accumulator, Cowan is comfortable taking kickouts and is regularly intercepting in defence.

33. Melbourne - Luke Teal
An athletic medium defender, Teal does his best work behind the ball as an intercepting threat, with his reading of the ball in flight and intercept marking highlights of his game. While mostly used in defence this year, Teal has experience playing through the midfield where his ball use and composure under pressure have been hallmarks of his game.

34. Gold Coast - Sam Gilbey
A medium intercept marking defender, Gilbey is an exceptional reader of the ball in flight, who not only gets to the right spots behind the ball to take intercept marks but also displays sticky hands overhead. Despite his light frame, he absorbs opposition contact well and holds onto his marks. An athletic defender who moves well, Gilbey is a capable rebounder and sound ball user.

35. Sydney - Anthony Munkara
An Essendon Next-Generation Academy prospect due to being a part of Essendon's Northern Territory Zone, the Bombers will be hoping Munkara slips past pick 40 so they can match bids. Munkara is a talented medium forward who is a strong overhead mark with a springy leap who plays an instinctive style of game, displays good skills and is a talented finisher around goal.

36. Geelong - Edward Allan
The son of former Hawk and Docker Ben, Edward Allan is a tall utility of key position height who looks most likely to develop into either a tall wingman or flanker. Edward is a skillful and mobile tall who covers a lot of ground, finds the ball in bunches, and has also shown that he can even be utilised as an inside midfielder.

So, we now have picks 53, 63, 88, ....

Interesting to see how many we use on draft night and what type of player(s) we go for. It wouldn't surprise me if we only use one pick (an early 20-something player?) and keep list space spare for the SPSS.

Aren’t the lions lacking in points? Pick 1 is 3000, you get a father son discount, can’t remember how much it is but even if it’s 20% that’ll still cost them 2400 which leaves them with 41 points to get their second father son player projected to go late first round. Must be hoping gws don’t bid on Ashcroft at 1 but even then I rekn they’ll struggle. Must be going into deficit next season.

Thanks for that, should be able to get a developing key forward from that lot,

Agreed, just take two of whoever is left.

Obviously they'd need to be sub 200cm to be a good forward haha.

Also that Nicholas Madden wtf he's 18yo and 204/112 already. Fmd

Ashcroft won't get bid on by GWS.  They are taking Cadman at no.1

Then they’ll be making the same mistake as the kangas not selecting the obvious no.1 draft pick just to win some brownie points with the player they’ll end up with. All the while helping out the lions by decreasing the amount of the points they’ll have to spend.

Latest word: Every draft prospect your club could snare

HeraldSun
16 October 2022

What does your club need at the draft, and who will be around the mark at their picks?

Our ultimate guide looks at what every list needs and provides the latest intel.

RICHMOND

Draft picks: 53, 63

List needs: Key forward

Who could be available at first pick: Unknown

Who’s in the mix after that: Unknown

The Tigers had a top draft hand this year before the trade period, but gave a lot away picks 12, 19 and 31 to secure Greater Western Sydney midfielders Tim Tarranto and Jacob Hopper. That means they are left with only a couple of late speculative selections at this stage. They can afford that, though, after snaring five top-30 picks in last year’s draft. Not losing anyone in the trade period will also help keep Richmond in the premiership window next year.

Latest word: The Tigers were very happy to retain ruckman Ivan Soldo during the trade period, who had been discussed as an option for Greater Western Sydney as part of the Jacob Hopper trade. Midfielder Jack Graham will also be welcomed back with open arms after exploring a trade opportunity with Port Adelaide.

-------------------------------------------------------------

ADELAIDE

Draft picks: 23, 46

List needs: Midfield class and height, key defender, young ruckman

Who could be available at first pick: Max Michalanney, Harry Barnett, Ed Allan, Isaac Keeler, Lewis Hayes, Henry Hustwaite, Coby Burgiel

Who’s in the mix after that: Jaiden Magor, Jaxon Binns, Adam D’Aloia, Kyle Marshall

After Adelaide gave up pick 5 in a trade to land Gold Coast’s Izak Rankine, the Crows won’t enter the draft until the second night, when they will be hoping to pick a player before a bid comes for father-son prospect and Norwood defender Max Michalanney, who sits right in the second-round mix. The best ruckman in the draft, Harry Barnett, is another homegrown talent, whose profile fits the developing Crows’ list. But will he still be available? It still looks unlikely Isaac Keeler, a Crows Next Generation Academy prospect and forward/ruck, will fall to pick 40, where Adelaide gets access to him. WA bolter Ed Allan has the size and speed the Crows’ crave in the midfield.

Latest word: The Crows have shown significant interest in Barnett, but some clubs believe the big man could be off the board by pick 23. Would they trade up?

BRISBANE LIONS

Draft picks: 34, 35, 36, 38, 55, 56, 73

List needs: Key forward, midfield speed

Who could be available at first pick: Will Ashcroft

Who’s in the mix after that: Jaspa Fletcher

The preliminary finalist will get the best player in this year’s draft, Will Ashcroft, the son of 318-game premiership Lion Marcus. But he won’t come cheap, with a potential bid from GWS costing the Lions 2400 (3000 minus the 20% discount) draft points. But the Giants appear a better chance of letting him slide than the Kangaroos were. Despite landing Josh Dunkley, Brisbane added to its draft points during the trade period, with its current hand equating to 2432. But Ashcroft isn’t the only father-son prospect available this year, with the son of Brisbane Bears and Lions player Adrian Fletcher, Jaspa – a long-kicking, skilful midfielder – also in the top-20 mix.

Latest word: Brisbane has done well to position itself to match early bids, but might still need more yet. It’s hard to see the Lions taking anyone else, but they have shown some interest in North Adelaide swingman Shaun Bennier, who looms as a late-rookie chance.

COLLINGWOOD

Draft picks: 16, 25, 27, 51

List needs: Key forward, key defender, ruckman

Who could be available at first pick: Matthew Jefferson, Lewis Hayes, Olli Hotton, Ollie Hollands

Who’s in the mix after that: Brayden George, Isaac Keeler, Harry Barnett, Charlie Clarke

The Magpies addressed many of their immediate list needs through the trade period, adding Tom Mitchell, Dan McStay, Billy Frampton and Bobby Hill. This draft will be about looking to the future, with a lot of key senior players including Scott Pendlebury (34), Jeremy Howe (32), Steele Sidebottom (31), Mason Cox (31), Jamie Elliott (30), Brody Mihocek (29) and Taylor Adams (29) not getting any younger. Tall forward Matthew Jefferson would be handy if he slips down the order more than expected, while Lewis Hayes could also appeal as a key defender. South Australian key forward Isaac Keeler could come into the frame in the second round, as could ruckman Harry Barnett.

Latest word: The Pies have indicated they might look for a ruckman through the draft or over summer for back-up as they look to a future which now doesn’t include Brodie Grundy.

CARLTON

Draft picks: 10, 29, 49, 66

List needs:
Outside run, wingman, key defensive depth

Who could be available at first pick: Ollie Hollands, Mattaes Phillipou, Jedd Busslinger, Cam Mackenzie

Who’s in the mix after that: Max Gruzewski, Jaxon Binns, Jason Gillbee, Tyreece Leiu

If Carlton moves up the order from pick 10, powerful midfielder-forward Bailey Humphrey or smooth-mover Cam Mackenzie would give their midfield mix a point-of-difference. The Blues secured Blake Acres on the cheap but their outside run remains an area it can bolster at the draft. Ollie Hollands, the brother of Gold Coast’s Elijah, took out the 2km time trial with a sizzling time of 5:54 and can play all over the ground. He would be a nice fit at the Blues, having risen into top 10 calculations after a strong finish to the year. Taller midfield-forward Mattaes Phillipou also ran a strong 2km and would be around the mark at pick 10. Or if they look to shore up their tall defensive stocks for the future – having been depleted in that department mid-year – then WA interceptor Jedd Busslinger fits the bill. Wingers Jaxon Binns and Jason Gillbee present as outside midfield options with their next two picks. Overlooked 2022 prospect Tyreece Leiu is one to watch late in the piece after an exceptional finish to the year in Carlton’s VFL side as a key defender, with the club impressed with his development.

Latest word: Carlton made their intentions clear during the trade period that club wishes to improve its draft hand – whether that be on draft night or beforehand. Would the Blues give up pick 29 or a future selection to shuffle further into the top 10?

ESSENDON

Draft picks: 4, 22, 54, 62, 68, 72

List needs: Tall midfielder, key-position players, small forward

Who could be available at first pick: Harry Sheezel, Elijah Tsatas, George Wardlaw, Mattaes Phillipou, Bailey Humphrey

Who’s in the mix after that: Olli Hotton, Jacob Konstanty, Anthony Munkara, Coby Burgiel, Ed Allan, Ethan Phillips, Jaydon Davey

With the Giants a strong chance to take Aaron Cadman, the Bombers will be ready to swoop on one of Elijah Tsatas, George Wardlaw or Harry Sheezel – whoever gets past North Melbourne’s pick 2 and 3. And given the club’s need for a genuine matchwinner – or a player who can add a much-needed point-of-difference to the midfield mix - either Tsatas, the classy all-round speedster, or the prospect who can turn a game like no other in the draft pool, Sheezel, would fit perfectly. Ideally, the Bombers take another player before a bid comes for father-son prospect Alwyn Davey Jnr, but it will be a nervous first night, with Davey Jnr’s talent putting him firmly in the first-round mix. If it goes Essendon’s way, the goalkicking feats and skill of Olli Hotton and Jacob Konstanty will appeal, while NGA member Anthony Munkara looms as the draft’s wildcard.

Latest word: The hugely-talented Munkara’s position in the draft is a fascinating one. As skilful as just about any prospect, some believe there is little chance he gets to 40, where Essendon can match a bid. But given his inconsistencies, other clubs might not jump before then.

FREMANTLE

Draft picks: 44, 67, 76

List needs: Key forward, wingman, ruckman,

Who could be available at first pick: Jed Hagan, Steely Green, Jaxon Binns, Jason Gillbee

Who’s in the mix after that: Jed Adams, Corey Wagner, Josh Draper (NGA), Harry Lemmey. Jasper Scaife (NGA)

Fremantle lost a handful of players during the trade period but it won’t enter the draft until pick 44, which will likely come in once father-son bids are matched. Unfortunately, there isn’t too many talls later in the piece that can replace the likes of Rory Lobb, Griffin Logue and Lloyd Meek. Small utilities Jed Hagan and Darcy Jones have shone in the WAFL at different stages this year and would be around the mark at their first pick, along with running machines Jaxon Binns and Jason Gillbee, who could replace Blake Acres in the long-term. Tall Harry Lemmey, who loomed as a top-10 pick before a confidence slump, may be available at their first choice, while WA key defenders Hugh Davies and Jed Adams could enter the frame later. The Dockers have shown interest in VFL mature-ager Corey Wagner, who has been recast as a damaging defender for Port Melbourne. It would be his third chance at AFL level after stints with North Melbourne and Melbourne.

Latest word: The loss of Lobb and Meek has strengthened the claims of Dockers NGA prospect Josh Draper as a later draft or rookie option. The key forward has a fantastic leap, is capable of backing up in the ruck and showed good signs this year when he wasn’t sidelined with an ankle injury.

GEELONG

Draft picks: 7, 58, 64

List needs: Running defender, key forward, young talent

Who could be available at first pick: Jhye Clark, Matthew Jefferson, Bailey Humphrey Mattaes Phillipou, Oliver Hollands

Who’s in the mix after that: Harvey Gallagher, Kaleb Smith, Harry Lemmey, Oskar Kregar, Ted Clohesy (NGA)

Geelong left trade period with Tanner Bruhn, Ollie Henry and a top-10 pick which could land the premiers one of the draft’s best prospects, and local product, Jhye Clark. The tough, competitive, well-balanced midfielder looms as the ideal replacement for Joel Selwood. In the middle rounds, long-kicking line-breakers Harvey Gallagher and Kaleb Smith – a bolter out of WA – could fit into the Mitch Duncan and Zac Tuohy spots long term, while Geelong Falcons vice-captain, and tough contested-ball winner, Ted Clohesy is another who will be in the Cats’ sights later in the draft. The 18-year-old a member of the club’s Next Generation Academy.

Latest word: If he’s still available at pick 7, which will become pick 8 after the Ashcroft bid, it’s hard to see the Cats passing up the homegrown gun in Clark – and, at this point, it’s seems likely he gets to there.

GOLD COAST

Draft picks: 5, 45, 71, 74

List needs: Talented midfielder-forward

Who could be available at first pick: Reuben Ginbey, Bailey Humprey, Mattaes Phillipou

Who’s in the mix after that: Unknown

The Suns are on the hunt for a player at the top of the draft who has got the flexibility to play multiple positions, with big-bodied Western Australia midfielder Reuben Ginbey one such player who has caught their attention. Victorian midfielder-forward Bailey Humphrey could also fit the bill, as could South Australian goalkicking midfielder Mattaes Phillipou. The Suns have spoken to Ollie Hollands – the brother of Elijah Hollands – but he is not expected to command a top-10 pick. Gold Coast did have pick 7 as well, but gave that away to Geelong as part of the Jack Bowes trade which relieved some salary cap pressure. When pick 45 comes around it will be best available. Clubs only expect around 50 players to be selected in the national draft.

Latest word: Gold Coast loaded up on future picks in next year’s draft during the trade period in anticipation of some top Academy prospects coming through including Jed Walter, Jake Rogers, Ethan Read and Will Graham.

GWS GIANTS

Draft picks: 1, 15, 18, 19, 31, 57, 61

List needs: Key forward, small forwards, scoreboard impact, inside midfielder

Who could be available at first pick: Aaron Cadman

Who’s in the mix after that: Josh Weddle, Jacob Konstanty, Darcy Jones, Charlie Clarke Harry Rowston (academy)

Key forward Aaron Cadman looks a monty to join the Giants with the first live of the open pick with the club sacrificing picks 3 and 12 to move up in the Jason Horne-Francis mega-trade. With their three picks in the teens, speedy small forwards will be on the agenda. Prospects like agility test-record breaker Darcy Jones, the charismatic Charlie Clarke, tackling machine Jacob Konstanty and dynamic forward Noah Long will all be in the mix. Clarke looks up to Toby Greene and has the same antagonistic approach, and also has a freakish ability around goal. Athletic 191cm defender Josh Weddle is another prospect in the frame for those picks if he is still on the board, and they may be more inclined to look at a midfielder after losing Jacob Hopper, Tim Taranto and Tanner Bruhn. The Giants are prone for a draft night surprise – they stunned by snaring mature-age defender Leek Aleer at pick 15 last year – and they could look to bundle their picks in the teens to move up the order to snare a top-10 slider. Allies MVP Harry Rowston is tied to the Giants’ Academy, with a bid set to come in the second or third round for the tough midfielder-forward. GWS has also shown strong interest in dynamic mature-ager Corey Preston, after a strong finish to the season for Williamstown, who could play a small forward role.

Latest word: Cadman isn’t necessarily No.1 on the Giants’ talent board, with the club saying publicly that they draft from a different pool to Victorian clubs due to the go-home factor. The Giants have 201cm ruck monster Nick Madden, who appears more likely to join the club after they were unable to pick up Ivan Soldo in the Hopper deal.

HAWTHORN

Draft picks: 6, 24, 41, 48, 50, 52, 65

List needs: Classy midfielder with power and speed

Who could be available at first pick: Bailey Humprey, Jhye Clark, Cam Mackenzie, Mattaes Phillipou

Who’s in the mix after that: Brayden George, Jacob Konstanty, Mitch Szybkowski, Cooper Vickery

The Hawks have seven draft picks in the first four rounds at the moment, but might look to package some of them up to move a little higher up the order. At pick six, they will be able to land a handy player like midfielder-forward Bailey Humphrey, onballer Jhye Clark or classy ball-winner Cam Mackenzie. With their second pick, Brayden George could appeal as a mid-sized power forward, as could livewire small forward Jacob Konstanty. Cooper Vickery is a speedy rebounding defender or midfielder who is a Hawthorn Next Generation Academy member and could come into the frame with one of the later picks.

Latest word: The Hawks have denied they have “cut too deep” after parting ways with experienced trio Tom Mitchell, Jaeger O’Meara and Jack Gunston during the trade period. The departures have freed up significant salary cap space for future trade and free agency targets.

MELBOURNE

Draft picks: 13, 37

List needs: Key forward, key defender

Who could be available at first pick: Matthew Jefferson, Mattaes Phillipou, Jedd Busslinger, Lewis Hayes

Who’s in the mix after that: Charlie Clarke, Harvey Gallagher, Jed Hagan, Blake Drury

With Sam Weideman’s departure to Essendon during the trade period, the Demons went after Western Bulldogs swingman Josh Schache as a back-up key forward. That spot still looks a weakness on their list but there look like being few options on the table at pick 13 unless Victorian key forward Matthew Jefferson slips outside the top-10. South Australian Mattaes Phillipou is also more likely to be a top-10 pick, but would appeal as a goalkicking midfielder. Alternatively, a young key defender could be targeted for life beyond Jake Lever and Steven May. West Australian Jedd Busslinger and Victorian Lewis Hayes are both exciting prospects in that department.

Latest word: The Demons are targeting what shapes as a potential ‘Super Draft’ in 2023, already holding two first-round selections and two second-round selections in that draft.

NORTH MELBOURNE

Draft picks: 2, 3, 40, 43, 59, 70

List needs: Key defender, key forward, midfield class and speed

Who could be available at first pick: George Wardlaw, Harry Sheezel, Elijah Tsatas, Bailey Humphrey, Jedd Busslinger

Who’s in the mix after that: Billy Dowling, Blake Drury, Jaiden Magor, Cooper Harvey

After handing over pick 1 as part of the huge Jason Horne-Francis trade, North Melbourne has positioned itself to land two of the best three players in the draft. The Giants appear to favour Cadman with the first selection, but that’s not a league-wide view. So North fans should be pretty happy if the club walks away with two of the top-end trio of game-changer Harry Sheezel, Clayton Oliver-like midfielder George Wardlaw and speedster Elijah Tsatas. Later on, SA ball magnet Billy Dowling and lively small Blake Drury might enter the mix, while goalkicking small Cooper Harvey, the son of the all-time games record holder, Brent, is tied to the club as a father-son prospect.

Latest word: All eyes are on North Melbourne, who will shape the top 10 with its two early picks – and they could be used on Wardlaw and Sheezel.

PORT ADELAIDE

Draft picks: 33, 60

List needs: Quality midfielder, key defender, forwards

Who could be available at first pick: Jaxon Binns, Jacob Konstanty, Jaiden Magor, Coby Burgiel, Isaac Keeler, Ed Allan, Brayden George

Who’s in the mix after that: Baynen Lowe, Kaleb Smith, Harry Lemmey, Kyle Marshall, Ethan Phillips

It was a huge trade period for the Power, who addressed two pressing needs in explosive midfield young gun Jason Horne-Francis and goalkicking small-forward Junior Rioli. Like its SA rival, Port Adelaide – as it stands – won’t take part in the first night of the draft but the class and speed of Jaxon Binns and Coby Burgiel would suit the Power on the outside in the second round, as would the goalkicking feats of Jacob Konstanty. And could they be the club to jump at Isaac Keeler before the Crows get access in the 30s? Fellow SA talls Harry Lemmey, athletic defender Kyle Marshall and ruckman Will Verrell have developed right under Port’s noses, too.

Latest word: The aggressive Power were one of the winners of trade period – but its draft hand took a significant hit, this year and next. And they might just miss out on one of the more highly-rated talls at 33, after they failed to get Esava Ratugolea to Alberton.

ST KILDA

Draft picks: 9, 28, 32, 47

List needs: Game-breakers, midfield speed, elite ball-users, key position depth

Who could be available at first pick: Bailey Humphrey, Cam Mackenzie (NGA), Mattaes Phillipou, Jedd Busslinger, Matthew Jefferson

Who’s in the mix after that: Brayden George, Charlie Clarke, Jaiden Magor, Bailey Macdonald

The under-fire Saints desperately need of matchwinners, and there’s several who could come into calculations with their first choice. Bailey Humphrey, who has shades of Jordan De Goey, would be a perfect fit but he may be off the board by then. They won’t have first dibs on their Next Generation Academy star Cam Mackenzie – bids inside the top 40 are protected - but taking him would make a lot of sense. His incredible poise, elite ball-use and speed can boost a lacklustre midfield group, and taller midfield option Mattaes Phillipou is also in that range as a dynamic midfielder-forward. Other gamebreaking forwards who could enter the frame with their next two selections include the powerful Brayden George, who will be sidelined for all of 2023 with injury, SA forward-midfielder Jaiden Magor and Sandringham livewire Charlie Clarke. Draft bolter Bailey Macdonald is raw but has electric speed which could help add to Jack Sinclair’s run off halfback in time.

Latest word: If you’ve been living under a rock, St Kilda is currently coachless after their club review. List boss James Gallagher said last week the club isn’t interested in finishing sixth, so they appear set to hit the draft hard in the coming years.

SYDNEY

Draft picks: 14, 17, 42, 75

List needs: Key defensive depth, clearance midfielder, running defender

Who could be available at first pick: Lewis Hayes, Josh Weddle, Elijah Hewett, Ollie Hollands

Who’s in the mix after that: Lachie Cowan, Sam Gilbey, Harvey Gallagher, Will Edwards (academy)

The Swans, headed by experienced recruiter Simon Dalrymple, prefer to pick on talent rather than specific list needs, and there should be plenty of options available with their two selections in the teens. Sydney picked up Aaron Francis from the Essendon during the trade period and either interceptor Lewis Hayes or competitive beast Josh Weddle would be quality additions for the future. The Swans’ clearance and contest game could also be bolstered with their early picks, with midfielders like Elijah Hewett, Ollie Hollands and Henry Hustwaite potentially available. If the Swans wish to add run out of defence to compliment Nick Blakey, Morrish medallist Lachie Cowan breaks lines with his penetrating kicking and leg speed, while Sam Gilbey’s class out of defence could come into their thinking later on.

Latest word: Swans Academy key defender Will Edwards ran a blistering 20m sprint for a big man at the state combine and impressed up against expected top-three pick Aaron Cadman earlier in the year. He shapes as a potential later draft or rookie option for the Swans.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Draft picks: 11, 21, 39, 69

List needs: Key defender, wingman, small forward

Who could be available at first pick: Jedd Busslinger, Mattaes Phillipou, Oliver Hollands, Olli Hotton

Who’s in the mix after that: Henry Hustwaite, Lewis Hayes, Jaspa Fletcher, Josh Weddle

The Bulldogs have a solid draft hand and should be able to fill some list holes with their first and second picks. South Australian midfielder-forward Mattaes Phillipou would be a good option with their first pick if he falls outside the top-10. West Australian key defender Jedd Busslinger would be another good option, with the club’s key defensive stocks looking a touch thin. After Lachie Hunter’s departure during the trade period, hard-running wingman Oliver Hollands would also be handy. With pick 21, Victorian key defenders Lewis Hayes and Josh Weddle could be available if the Bulldogs don’t secure Busslinger with pick 11. Henry Hustwaite is a tall midfielder who can play midfield or defence, while Jaspa Fletcher is another handy wingman but is a NGA prospect for Brisbane.

Latest word: Mattaes Phillipou is the son of Sam Phillipou, who played only three games in his one season with Footscray in 1995 but also enjoyed a successful career in the SANFL.

WEST COAST

Draft picks: 8, 12, 20, 26

List needs: Midfield talent, key position depth, ruckman, outside run

Who could be available at first pick: Reuben Ginbey, Elijah Hewett, Jedd Busslinger

Who’s in the mix after that: Harry Barnett, Ed Allan, Kaleb Smith, Tyrell Dewar (NGA)

The Eagles have four picks inside the top 30, and you can lock in Reuben Ginbey at their first choice (after Ashcroft bid) if he is still on the board. The tall, athletic midfielder has stacks of potential and the Dockers fan has been strongly linked to West Coast. The Eagles have the chance to nab two West Australians with pick 8 and 12, with tall interceptor Jedd Busslinger and explosive midfielder Elijah Hewett firmly in calculations. However, Busslinger may be off the board before then. The club has shown interest in Harry Barnett, who is widely viewed as the top ruckman available in this draft, which makes sense given Nic Naitanui turns 33 next year, and 195cm midfield speedster Ed Allan presents as an exciting option with their picks in the 20s. Later on, powerful defender Kaleb Smith has links to the Eagles, with former West Coast defender Brad Sheppard one of his coaches at Wesley College. West Coast can also take lively small forward Tyrell Dewar through its Next Generation Academy, and there’s every chance he slips through to the rookie draft.

Latest word: The Eagles split their prized No.2 pick selection for picks eight and 12 in the four team mega-trade. Rivals believe the Eagles were even considering Ginbey with the second pick in the draft, given the go-home concerns surrounding a number of top prospects.

ESPN's early three-round phantom draft for 2022 - every pick of the first three rounds

Chris Doerre
ESPN
21 October 2022

Throughout 2022, ESPN.com.au AFL draft expert Chris Doerre has cast his eye over the country's best junior footballers to give readers an early insight into the next generation of AFL stars. He's released his latest three-round phantom draft.

1. Brisbane (matching GWS' bid) - Will Ashcroft (Brisbane - F/S) - Sandringham Dragons (VIC)
Will, the son of Brisbane great Marcus, has agreed to become a father-son selection for the Lions meaning Brisbane will match any bid for the talented youngster. A Round 1-ready midfielder who requires no time to develop, Will has dominated against all competition, headlined by his average of 29.3 disposals, 7.3 tackles and five clearances for Brisbane in the VFL and the Larke Medal for the best player during the Under-18 Championships. Will stands out with the volume of his contested ball winning and the frequency with which he bursts 5-15 metres out of stoppages.

2. GWS - Aaron Cadman - Greater Western Victoria Rebels (VIC)
The premier key forward in this year's draft, Cadman has demonstrated rapid improvement and has separated himself from the pack with the variety of ways he impacts games and takes advantage of rival key defenders. Cadman is a strong contested mark, creates separation on the lead, is powerful over ground balls, dangerous close to goal, and adept when pushing further afield.

3. North Melbourne - George Wardlaw - Oakleigh Chargers (VIC)
Wardlaw is a contested beast who does his best work at stoppages. A powerful first possession winner, Wardlaw absorbs and fends off opposition tacklers with ease. He is a reliable distributor by hand from stoppages and defensively displays an unmatched level of commitment and effort which sets him apart.

4. North Melbourne - Harry Sheezel - Sandringham Dragons (VIC)

5. Essendon - Elijah Tsatas - Oakleigh Chargers (VIC)
The premier loose ball-winning midfielder in this draft, Tsatas is routinely first to the ball and wins it on the move at speed. A balanced midfielder who can play inside or outside, Tsatas has an established reputation for the ease and speed with which he breaks the lines, with his acceleration and evasion of opponents on the move a highlight.

6. Gold Coast - Bailey Humphrey - Gippsland Power (VIC)

7. Hawthorn - Cameron Mackenzie (St Kilda NGA) - Sandringham Dragons (VIC)
Despite being a Saints Academy prospect, St Kilda will not have first access to Mackenzie as bids for Next-Generation Academy prospects can no longer be matched inside the top 40. A balanced and well-rounded midfielder, Mackenzie is a strong contested ball winner and is equally adept receiving the ball on the move at stoppages, where he displays quickness and evasion. He also hurts the opposition by foot by placing his kicks out in front of his targets to lead onto.

8. Geelong - Jhye Clark - Geelong Falcons (VIC)
Playing taller than his height, Clark is not only adept winning the contested ball through the midfield but is also a strong overhead mark who can push forward and provide a target. Winning the Victoria Country MVP during the Under-18 Championships, Clark is a complete midfielder who displays a promising inside/outside midfield balance by winning and tackling on the inside, while his composure, tidy skills, and high work rate on the outside are notable.

9. West Coast - Reuben Ginbey - East Perth (WA)

10. St Kilda - Mattaes Phillipou - Woodville-West Torrens (SA)

11. Carlton - Jedd Busslinger - East Perth (WA)
The most advanced key defender in this draft, Busslinger is an elite intercept mark who reads the ball early in flight and attacks the footy well in the air. With ball in hand, Busslinger is a composed and reliable ball user, while defensively he is competitive and able to curb the influence of his direct opponent.

12. Western Bulldogs - Oliver Hollands - Murray Bushrangers (VIC)

13. West Coast - Elijah Hewett - Swan Districts (WA)

14. Melbourne - Matthew Jefferson - Oakleigh Chargers (VIC)
An athletic, high-flying key forward, Jefferson is one of the best readers of the ball in flight in this draft and is a marking force forward of centre. Providing heavy scoreboard impact during the Under-18 Championships headlined by seven goals for Vic Metro against Western Australia, Jefferson does not need to find much of the football to put points on the board.

15. Brisbane (matching Sydney's bid) - Jaspa Fletcher (Brisbane - F/S) - Brisbane Lions (QLD)
The son of 231-gamer Adrian, Jaspa is not only a father-son eligible prospect for Brisbane but has also been part of their Academy. Jaspa plays his best football on the outside, taking on the game with his speed and breaking games open with his run and carry and long and precise kicks.

16. Essendon (matching Sydney's bid) - Alwyn Davey Jr (Essendon F/S) - Oakleigh Chargers (VIC)

17. Sydney - Henry Hustwaite - Dandenong Stingrays (VIC)

18. GWS - Jacob Konstanty - Gippsland Power (VIC)
As dangerous as any small forward in this year's draft around goal, Konstanty wreaks havoc both at ground level and as a marking target. While Konstanty is a weapon offensively around goal, his speed, forward pressure and tackling inside 50 are also notable.

19. Collingwood - Lewis Hayes - Eastern Ranges (VIC)

20. Sydney - Olli Hotton - Sandringham Dragons (VIC)

21. GWS - Josh Weddle - Oakleigh Chargers (VIC)
A 'third tall defender' who possesses the height, strength, and leap to play tall and the speed to stick with dangerous small forwards. Weddle is a capable intercept mark, and the run and dare he displays from defence is striking and uncommon for someone his height and type.

22. GWS - Lachlan Cowan - Tasmania Devils (TAS)
A rebounding defender who generates meaningful drive from defence, Cowan is a damaging long kick and has the speed to break the lines. A prolific accumulator, Cowan is comfortable taking kickouts and is regularly intercepting in defence.

23. West Coast - Harry Barnett - West Adelaide (SA)
This year's most highly-touted ruckman, Barnett is a contested marking weapon whether pushing forward or behind the ball. Though the middle, Barnett is an effective tap ruckman, but what separates him at ruck contests is his strength to win the ball himself out of the ruck before disposing of the football.

24. Western Bulldogs - Darcy Jones - Swan Districts (WA)
A small but speedy outside midfielder, Jones breaks the lines and takes on the game with an unmatched level of dash and dare, displaying rare speed and agility. Breaking the record in the agility test during this year's AFL Draft Combine, while Jones plays a high impact-per-possession game, he also finds and wins a good amount of his own ball.

25. Adelaide - Coby Burgiel - Gippsland Power (VIC)

26. Hawthorn - Isaac Keeler (Adelaide NGA) - North Adelaide (SA)

27. Collingwood - Brayden George - Murray Bushrangers (VIC)

28. West Coast - Kaleb Smith - East Fremantle (WA)
A star during the WA State Combine, Smith won the 20m sprint and placed third in the agility test. One of this draft's most damaging rebounding defenders, Smith is a line breaker with speed and power who aggressively takes on the game with ball in hand and hurts opposition sides with his penetrating kick.

31. Adelaide (matching Carlton's bid) - Max Michalanney (Adelaide F/S) - Norwood (SA)
The son of Jim, Max Michanney is eligible to join Adelaide as a father-son selection due to his father playing more than 200 games for SANFL club Norwood. An athletic defender, Michalanney plays a negating style and is effective shutting down forwards of various heights and types.

32. Carlton - Max Gruzewski - Oakleigh Chargers (VIC)
A high leaping, strong contested marking tall, Gruzewski can impact games either as a third tall or key position player at either end of the field. Making Gruzewski such a prolific contested marking threat is the combination of his reading of the ball in flight, his strong hands overhead and marking at full stretch in addition to his leap and one-on-one craft.

33. Fremantle - Edward Allan - Claremont (WA)
The son of former Hawk and Docker Ben, Edward Allan is a tall utility of key position height who looks most likely to develop into either a tall wingman or flanker. Allan is a skilful and mobile tall who won the 20m sprint at this year's AFL Draft Combine and covers a lot of ground, finds the ball in bunches, and has also shown that he can even be utilised as an inside midfielder.

34. GWS - Noah Long - Bendigo Pioneers (VIC)
Damaging both as a forward and midfielder, Long's burst of speed and work at ground level are his strengths. When used through the midfield, Long often wins first possession and bursts out of stoppages at speed, while as a forward, he is dynamic, a natural crumber, and talented finisher around goal.

35. St Kilda - Max Knobel - Gippsland Power (VIC)
The son of former AFL ruckman Trent, Max Knobel is a late blooming ruckman who has continued growing this year. Now standing at 206cm, Knobel is a project player who is still growing into his body but is developing rapidly and has a knack for getting to the right positions behind the ball to take intercept marks.

36. Port Adelaide - Ethan Phillips - Port Melbourne (VIC)
Winning the Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal for the VFL's most promising young talent, Phillips has developed into the premier key defender outside the AFL. An elite reader of the ball and intercept mark, Phillips is also a strong one-on-one defender and rarely loses a contest.

37. Melbourne - Jaiden Magor - South Adelaide (SA)
A talented goalkicking forward who can push up through the midfield, Magor is a capable athlete with a good leap, speed and agility. As a forward he displays proficiency overhead and at ground level, always looking balanced, while through the midfield his class shines through with his balance, evasion, clean skills and ball winning capabilities.

38. Western Bulldogs - Charlie Clarke - Sandringham Dragons (VIC)
A speedy small forward, Clarke is one of the better crumbing forwards in this draft. Clarke plays with an infectious energy, applies good forward pressure and is not just a freakish finisher who can hit the scoreboard in bunches - but is also effective setting up teammates for shots on goal.

39. North Melbourne - Blake Drury - Oakleigh Chargers (VIC)
A natural crumbing forward, Drury is as good as any in this draft positioning himself at the base of the contest and winning the ball off hands. While best suited to playing as a forward, with Drury possessing above average speed, endurance, and skills, he has also proven adaptable to playing in defence, on a wing or through the midfield as required.

40. Hawthorn - Jakob Ryan - Glenelg (SA)
A well-rounded medium defender, Ryan's greatest strength is his intercepting capabilities. Able to take intercept marks and win intercept possessions at ground level, Ryan is a capable rebounder from defence and can generate drive both by foot and with his run and carry.

41. Sydney - James Van Es - Greater Western Victoria (VIC)
A strong bodied one-on-one key defender who rarely loses a contest, Van Es won the running vertical jump and placed equal first in the standing vertical jump at this year's AFL Draft Combine. A good reader of the ball in flight, Van Es is a potent intercept mark and contested mark who uses the ball reliably by foot.

42. North Melbourne - Cooper Harvey (North Melbourne F/S) - Northern Knights (VIC)
The son of Brent Harvey, Cooper Harvey is a strong, contested ball winning midfielder who displays the strength to maintain his feet when tackled and fend off opposition tackles with power. Possessing good skills, Harvey displays smarts, class, composure and sound decision making with ball in hand and can also push forward and impact the scoreboard.

43. Essendon (matching Fremantle's bid) - Anthony Munkara (Essendon NGA) - West Adelaide (NT)

44. Fremantle - Jed Hagan - East Fremantle (WA)
A small, speedy impact player, Hagan possesses the versatility to play forward, back or through the midfield. An advanced player for his age who earned eight WAFL League games this year, Hagan possesses a neat burst of speed, is a composed and reliable kick who is a good contested ball winner for his size and particularly excels winning loose balls.

45. Gold Coast - Sam Gilbey - Claremont (WA)
A medium intercept marking defender, Gilbey is an exceptional reader of the ball in flight who not only gets to the right spots behind the ball to take intercept marks but also displays sticky hands overhead. Despite his light frame, he absorbs opposition contact well and holds onto his marks. An athletic defender who moves well, Gilbey is a capable rebounder and sound ball user.

46. St Kilda - Bailey Macdonald - Oakleigh Chargers (VIC)
A speedy line breaking defender, Macdonald breaks games open with the run and drive he generates from defence. Macdonald is one of this draft's most impressive speed/agility athletes and his impact on games is based around the metres he gains and the high frequently he accelerates at speed from defence.

47. GWS (matching Hawthorn's bid) - Harry Rowston (GWS Academy) - Greater Western Sydney (NSW)
A Greater Western Sydney Academy prospect, Rowston was the Allies MVP during the Under-18 Championships. A strong ball winning midfielder who displays a high work rate and the versatility to push forward, Rowston provides a genuine marking target forward of centre and can hit the scoreboard.

48. Hawthorn - Adam D'Aloia - Woodville-West Torrens (SA)
South Australia's MVP during the Under-18 Championships, D'Aloia is a stoppage star who does his best work in close. One of this year's most advanced and productive midfielders, D'Aloia plays a competitive two-way game, is a strong contested ball winner and tackler who distributes well by hand.

49. Carlton - Jason Gillbee - Bendigo Pioneers (VIC)
An endurance running machine, Gillbee finished a narrow second place behind Ollie Hollands in the 2km time trial during the AFL Draft Combine. An outside accumulator who likely settles on a wing, Gillbee is a strong mark and can also push into defence and perform an accountable role or generate run.

50. Geelong - Harvey Gallagher - Bendigo Pioneers (VIC)
A versatile overager who plays his best football across half-back, Gallagher displays a burst of speed, good agility, and evasion, regularly takes on the game with his run and generates meaningful drive by foot. An impressive intercept mark for a small, Gallagher reads the play early to get into position for intercept marks.

51. Collingwood - Will Verrall - South Adelaide (SA)
An athletic ruckman, Verrall follows up well at ground level and is a contested marking force around the ground. With his strength one-on-one, strong contested marking capabilities and how early he reads the drop of the ball, Verrall while he has played most of his football as a ruckman may develop best as a key defender.

52. Hawthorn - Cooper Vickery (Hawthorn NGA) - Gippsland Power (VIC)
A versatile and damaging footballer, Vickery is a Hawthorn Next-Generation Academy prospect who displays the versatility to play in defence, up forward and through the midfield. A damaging footballer, Vickery impacts games with his run and penetrating kicking.

53. Richmond - Will Dowling - North Adelaide (SA)
Averaging 30.9 disposals and 1.5 goals per game in the SANFL Under-18s, Dowling is a goalkicking midfielder who displays the versatility to play inside, outside and across half-forward. Dowling covers the ground well and knows where to be go to amass a lot of touches, whether it's around stoppages or on the outside.

54. Gold Coast - Tom McCallum - Tasmania Devils (TAS)
Just short of key defence height at 192cm, McCallum plays taller than his height with his one-on-one strength and work aerially strengths. An elite ball reader who routinely gets to the drop of the ball, McCallum is one of this draft's best intercept marks and takes a good number of them contested.

55. Geelong - Ted Clohesy (Geelong NGA) - Geelong Falcons (VIC)
A Geelong Next-Generation Academy midfielder, Clohesy is one of this draft's premier competitors. Best suited as a midfielder, Clohesy is a strong contested ball winner who distributes effectively by hand, works hard both ways, chases and pressures relentlessly and is a strong tackler.

Port Adelaide and Richmond – two teams that invested heavily in ready-made talent at the recent trade period – are likely to add two more players to their lists with their later picks in the national draft

Hawks with seven picks - 6, 24, 41, 48, 50, 52, 65 - but plans to only select four or five players.

Gold Coast with four picks - 5, 45, 71, 74 - could use just one selection.

If true then our first pick at 53 will move up a couple of spots.

AFL Draft Whispers: Tigers’ plans with weakest hand

Ben Waterworth
Fox Sports
October 28th, 2022

Richmond might have the thinnest hand of this year’s draft, but the club is looking to add to its key-position stocks with one of its late picks, reports the Herald Sun.

The Tigers held four top-40 selections heading into the trade period, but the significant acquisitions of Giants on-ballers Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper has left the club with Picks 53 and 63.

The combined draft value index total of those two selections is 345 points — the lowest of all 18 clubs with Adelaide (683) and Port Adelaide (709) next best.

However the Tigers will be hopeful of finding another late bargain, like they did with premiership trio Kane Lambert (Pick 46, 2014), Nathan Broad (Pick 67, 2015) and Jack Graham (Pick 53, 2016).

The Herald Sun reported Richmond was keen to secure a tall forward with at least one of its two late picks in the national draft.

Most of this year’s best key-position prospects are defenders, but West Adelaide duo Harry Lemmey (199cm) and Tom Scully (202cm) could still be on the table after both were invited to the recent national draft combine.

Both players had subpar national championships campaigns, but impressed at various SANFL levels. Both players kicked three each across the Bloods’ two finals, while Scully booted 50 goals in the Under 18s competition.

“I’m not sure what will happen come draft time, but I think clubs should know that I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get there,” Lemmey told foxfooty.com.au earlier this month.

“I feel like throughout this whole age group, I’m one of the most driven and motivated people.

“If it’s Pick 1 or the last pick in the rookie draft, I’m going to do whatever it takes to become a successful player.”

WHY TIGERS FANS NEED NOT WORRY

Chris Cavanagh
HeraldSun
28 October 2022

Richmond has one of the weakest hands heading into this year’s national draft, holding only picks 53 and 63.

At the end of the season, the Tigers had selections 12, 19, 31 and 38. However, those higher picks were moved on as part of the deals to lure GWS midfield pair Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper to Punt Rd.

Richmond believes the additions of Taranto and Hopper will help ensure it remains a challenger next season, and the club’s recruiting team led by Blair Hartley and Matthew Clarke have history at finding draft gems with late picks.

The last time Richmond used pick 53, it landed midfielder Jack Graham.

Richmond secured five top-30 picks in last year’s national draft – Josh Gibcus, Tom Brown, Tyler Sonsie, Sam Banks and Judson Clarke – which meant the club did not need to invest heavily in this year’s draft as well.

While Gibcus made a major impression as a key defender this year, some at Richmond believe that Brown could prove to be the best player of the bunch.

The Tigers are keen to secure a key forward with at least one of their two draft picks this year, with South Australian pair Harry Lemmey and Tom Scully two players who could potentially still be available.

Richmond’s AFL Draft plans revealed

The Tigers hold the weakest draft hand, so how are they planning to pursue this year’s count?

Mitch Keating
zerohanger.com
October 29, 2022

Holding the weakest draft hand among all 18 clubs in the competition, Richmond are set for a narrowed focus come draft night - with their sights reportedly set on bolstering their key-forward stocks.

Richmond's current hand of Pick 53 and 63 leaves the Punt Road club with just 345 draft points ahead of next month's National Draft, a tally almost half of the next lowest in Adelaide at 683.

Their depleted selections stocks come after a high-profile trade window that saw the Tigers secure GWS star duo Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper in separate deals.

Richmond parted with Picks 12, 19, 31 and their future first-round selection to attain the midfield pair, while gaining their only two current selections from the Giants as part of the Hopper trade.

With their midfield now set for the coming years, the Tigers are said to be turning their attention to key forwards at the draft, according to The Herald Sun.

Richmond plucked North Adelaide tall attacker Jacob Bauer through the 2022 Mid-Season Draft and could again look toward South Australia to further add to their key-forward depths.

The Tigers will be hopeful one of West Adelaide pair Tom Scully (203cm/89kg) or Harry Lemmey (200cm/95kg) could still be on offer come their first selection on draft night.

With a multitude of father-son selections likely to arise in the early rounds of the draft, Richmond's opening pick at 53rd overall is likely to advance up the order by the end of the second round, while any matched Academy bids after Pick 40 will also help their case.

Both Scully and Lemmey were considered among the top 20 prospects early into this year, however could now find themselves falling early into the third round.

Richmond's interest in a new-age key-forward comes as champion Tiger Jack Riewoldt enters what will likely be his last season in yellow and black.

Damien Hardwick will be keen to find a suitable partner for reigning Jack Dyer Medal winner Tom Lynch after Riewoldt's departure, with swingman Noah Balta one of several options for the Tigers.

Bauer was unable to break into Richmond's senior side after joining the club in June, but firms as a project talent for the club.

The National Draft will commence on Monday, November 28 and will take place over two nights, with the rounds two and onwards taking place on Tuesday, November 29.

Article about Lemmey who may be around at our pick 53.

-------------------------------------------

‘Whatever it takes’: The rollercoaster AFL draft year of Harry Lemmey - and why he’s as ‘driven’ as ever

Ben Waterworth
Fox Sports
October 31st, 2022 2:26 pm

First-round prospects, bolters and young guns with familiar surnames seem to be exclusively celebrated at this time of the year ahead of the AFL draft.

Harry Lemmey doesn’t fit into any of those three categories. By his own admission, he’s a slider.

This is a draft year story of rotten luck and the traps of buying into expectations – both external and internal – for young athletes. But it’s also one of determination from an impressive young man with ample upside and a bold, unwavering goal to play 250 AFL games.

“I’m not sure what will happen come draft time, but I think clubs should know that I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get there,” Lemmey told foxfooty.com.au.

“I feel like throughout this whole age group, I’m one of the most driven and motivated people.”

An AFL Academy member, Lemmey entered his 2022 campaign as arguably the top key-position prospect of this year’s draft class. He’d had a taste of SANFL league action in 2021 and rated above average for both marks and forward 50 marks among key forwards across his seven SANFL 18’s matches.

An athletic 199cm forward from West Adelaide with a terrific skillset, Lemmey was being mentioned in the same breath as Will Ashcroft, George Wardlaw and Elijah Tsatas.

He was in the Pick 1 conversation in March, according to recruiters. And Lemmey, who already had “high expectations on myself”, was well aware of that chatter.

Seven tough months later and Lemmey is now considered by recruiters as a late national draft prospect at best.

Asked if it was the internal or external expectations he felt most burdened by in 2022, Lemmey said: “A bit of both.

“You definitely feel it out on the footy field. You go from just playing footy to everyone knows your name and everyone‘s calling you out when you’re having set-shots and you’re not going as well.”

COPING WITH EXPECTATIONS

Recruiters, at first, gave Lemmey the benefit of the doubt, putting his slow start to the year down to a lack of continuity.

He’d missed Rounds 1 and 3 of the SANFL league season due to health and safety protocols, booting two goals from nine disposals and five marks against Central District in between. He then didn’t play in Round 4 against Norwood as he was a travelling emergency, returned in Round 5 to finish goalless from two disposals then was played in the reserves a week later where he kicked 0.1 from nine disposals. Multiple protocols-related absences also sidelined him from several training sessions during that six-week slog.

Lemmey built some momentum ahead of South Australia’s national Under 18 championships. He kicked 2.4 from 15 disposals and 10 marks in a reserves game against the Eagles in late May then followed up with 6.0 from 18 disposals and 10 marks in a SANFL Under 18s match against Central District.

The champs, though, didn’t go Lemmey’s way.

He booted 1.1 and averaged five disposals and one mark from three games. In one match against Vic Metro, he started forward but couldn’t get his hands on the ball, prompting coach Tony Bamford to throw Lemmey into the ruck for the third quarter then into the backline for the fourth – just to try and get him involved in the game.

Meanwhile, Victorian prospects Aaron Cadman and Matt Jefferson put together stunning carnival campaigns – so good they overtook Lemmey as the best key-position forward prospects.

“There’s been a lot of ups and downs for sure. I think this year there were very big expectations on me, especially from myself – which is all good. You learn from your moments that you have throughout the year,” he said.

“I think the negatives you learn the most from … you find ways to implement the lessons into your game to make you a better footballer and a better person as well.”

Asked what his biggest take-out from his rollercoaster 2022 season had been, Lemmey said “playing in the moment” and “not getting too caught up” in what others think.

“I think there‘s plenty of times where things weren’t going my way and I was almost getting lost in my head,” he said.

“The best thing that I learned this year – and I got external help – was to just live in the moment, try not to think about everything else and expectations. Once you cross onto the footy field, you do your role for your team and the best you can.

“I couldn’t really name one specific person that’s helped me (in that space). It’s more been the whole collective, 10 or 12 people, that I’ve been able to reach out to and get their advice.

“There‘s plenty of things like getting drafted and whatnot, but just control what you can control. So stuff like your diet, what are you doing with the training and if you’re going to do the extras. Whether it’s going down to the beach for 20 minutes and getting in the water and moving around – all those little things have helped me throughout the year.”

LATE-SEASON SURGE

Upon reflection, Lemmey believes that move by the SA coaching staff to put him into defence for one quarter against Vic Metro helped him deliver a stronger finish to his season.

Lemmey went back to West Adelaide and played the last three games of the Under 18s season in defence with the odd stint in the ruck. It paid dividends, averaging 16 disposals and nine marks, while also sneaking forward to kick a goal in each of his last two matches.

He was then elevated to West Adelaide’s reserves side for its semi-final and preliminary final and returned to the forward line, kicking 3.3 and averaging 10 disposals across the two games.

“There‘s been plenty of things that haven’t gone my way, but it’s how I’ve overcome them,” Lemmey said.

“Obviously my champs didn‘t go exactly how I would have liked them to go, but I think it’s how I’ve bounced back from my experiences that I had in those championships and applied that to my last five or six games of the year.

“Playing centre half-back was really good to show clubs that I can play both sides of the field, because I knew I did have that in my book – because I played a little bit there as a 15 and 16-year-old – and it just hadn‘t come out yet.”

Despite Lemmey’s topsy-turvy campaign and slide down many club draft boards, he said recruiters had remained “relatively consistent of what is required from me to get to the AFL level” during interviews.

“I’ve got big goals. I really want to be a 250-game AFL player and they’ve been really helpful for me to be able to identify what I need to do to be able to get to that stage,” he said.

DROPPING THE KOOKABURRA FOR THE SHERRIN

As a 15-year-old, Lemmey declared he wanted to be a professional athlete. He just hadn’t decided whether that’d be as a footballer or cricketer.

He could’ve easily gone down the cricket route.

Lemmey was a talented fast bowler who was among Sturt’s youngest ever grade cricket debutants and opened the bowling for a Cricket Australia XI – a team of the country’s best 15-year-olds – coached by ex-Test players Chris Rogers and Ryan Harris in 2019.

He reckons he “maxed out” at 130km/hr once when the speed gun was on him.

“That wasn’t too bad for a 16 or 17-year-old,” he said with a laugh.

Lemmey for several years wanted to keep playing both sports at the highest level possible for as long as possible. But like all gun dual-sports athletes, he had to focus on one eventually.

“I was really happy when I made the decision to choose footy,” he said.

“Opportunity is the first reason that comes to mind. There was a lot of different factors, but I think the first one was as a South Australian, Redbacks bowlers are debuting by 21 or 22 or 23 years old – and my original thought was ‘if my AFL career goes perfectly as I would like it to go, that‘s almost 100 AFL games by that time’ – which is a lot when you think about it.”

But the fact Lemmey kept his options open for so long meant a lot of hours spent not only in the nets and on the footy training track, but also in the car driving from session to session.

Lemmey said he has dreams to be central to “big moments” in AFL games. But paying back his parents with strong on-field performances is just as significant a motivating factor behind his desire to be an AFL player.

“I think of everyone that has sacrificed for me to get me to where I am. Mum and Dad have done a lot for me, all my friends and family – I couldn‘t thank them enough for what they’ve done,” he said.

“I feel like I sort of owe it to them. They‘ve done so much for me and it’s time to give back – and hopefully, the results pay off.

“With footy and cricket, Mum and Dad have been taking me everywhere. From Auskick as a five-year-old to every training session three nights a week – and if I’m doing other stuff as well, they’d drive me around.”

ANXIOUS WAIT LOOMS

Lemmey says one of the most nerve-racking nights he’s ever experienced was Christmas Eve last year, knowing that at 6.30am the next day he’d be meeting West Adelaide graduate turned Adelaide Crows forward Riley Thilthorpe to run 100 100m sprints.

But that nervous night might be topped in late November ahead of the national draft.

Lemmey, ultimately, doesn’t care which club he ends up at. The day he declared he wanted to be a professional athlete was the day he began mentally preparing for a career outside of South Australia, particularly from a footy perspective considering only two of the 18 AFL clubs are based in the state.

It emerged last week Richmond was keen to secure a tall forward with at least one of its two late selections (Picks 53 and 63) in the draft. Lemmey, along with West Adelaide teammate Tom Scully, could be in that mix.

But for the Blackwood Football Club product, any AFL colours will be good colours.

“If it’s Pick 1 or the last pick in the rookie draft, I’m going to do whatever it takes to become a successful player,” he said.

These guys did a full on mock draft last night:

https://www.facebook.com/pommyinoz/videos/1533376687161638/

Here's who they selected for Richmond:

50. Richmond - Blake Drury

Scully (#46) & Lemmey (#48)  were already gone.

They also reckon we would be interested in Luke Teal (#54).

58. Richmond - Ted Clohesy .... ( apparently Geelong has said they won't be matching bids in the National Draft).

We need talls. I don't care if they're scraping the bottom of the barrel we need to try to develop a tall forward, no excuses.

These mock drafts just put them in order of who they think is best they don’t take into account what the teams need. If we had early picks then we’d take best available but with the later picks they’ll go for team needs so I fully expect them to take some talls.

We do need talls.

But there’s no point drafting a player for the sake of position if that player has little prospect of making at AFL level. Then it’s just a waste of a draft pick.

I would rather draft 2 talls than none.

Rookie draft, take a medium forward and key defender.

We're talking about pick 50-60 so I doubt these two are going to light it up either.

Need to take a punt on two tall forwards and hope that one of them makes a decent forward.

101 % ,tall forward take time to develop, take 2 maybe 3 because with Jacks age and Lynchies injuries we are going to need a few
I will give you my opinion based on history, the other clubs will likely only take picks into the 3rd round at best and with the high amount of picks being gobbled up for the father / sons and a few delisted players being pick up,  I think our first pick will be in the 40’s and if the quality is there use all 3 on tall, maybe a developing ruck/ forward would be handy

More than enough evidence over the last four or five drafts to indicate quality players can be found in the 50s and 60s.

I’m not saying don’t go the KPF, but if those available at those picks have 10% of making it at AFL level and there are others that are non KPP’s at say 50%, go with the player that you think can actually play at an AFL level eventually.

We also have three rookie list spots which may be better use for those more speculative picks.

Yeah I see what you're saying.

I think in this instance for me if the margins were smaller (ie these key forwards have a 20% chance of making it vs small mids having 30% chance) if be prepared to take on the risk of drafting the talls and hope for the best.

I see a guy like Mitch Lewis and I think surely we can find someone like that if we get them a chance.

I don’t think We don’t have a choice, key forwards often take 2 or 3 years to show signs they will make it,
If we don’t have a crack this year, next year,( if we go well ),our first pick will be a late second round and with years to develop a key forward and no guarantees
Our key forward will be lucky to be there for a year for jack and 2 maybe 3 for  Lynchy I hope they grab 2 and maybe 1 as a rookie

Our club appears to take the long term outlook in planning. I would bet they already had hopper and Taranto in the pipe last year that’s why they went heavily in the draft in 2021. I suggest they also have this in mind with regards to our forward needs . I know we are compromised next year re picks , but you can gain picks by offloading players

AFL Draft Power Rankings – November 2022

Top 50 plus those in the mix around our picks.

Top 50 here: https://central.rookieme.com/afl/power-rankings/afl-draft-power-rankings-november-2022/

IN THE MIX

As always, and despite the list being extended out to 50 names, there are a bunch of players who can consider themselves unlucky to miss out. Needless to say, that does not mean they are out of draft contention.

Potentially the next cab off the rank was Gippsland Power defender/wingman Cooper Vickery. The Hawthorn NGA candidate took out his region’s best and fairest, beating out a stacked squad of players in doing so.

Fellow Vic Country squad members Jack O’Sullivan (Oakleigh) and Hugh Bond (GWV) also came into considerations, while Chargers talls Hudson O’Keeffe and Will Elliott may attract interest from clubs despite their omissions here.

Over in South Australia, talls Tom Scully and Harry Lemmey have been on the radar all year, the latter having been originally touted as a top five prospect. Now, Scully is arguably ahead in the race to be drafted, though there are no guarantees for the West Adelaide talls.

Jackson Broadbent is another interesting ruck proposition. Though his craft in that primary position could be worked on, his ability to contribute with sound skills around the ground is rare for a player his size and may be too good to overlook.

Title: AFL Draft Focus: Richmond Tigers (zerohanger)

AFL Draft Focus: Richmond Tigers

The Tigers currently won’t enter the draft until the third round, but that doesn’t mean they’re short on options.

Jack Jovanovski
zerohanger.com
November 9, 2022

So with their list already almost finalised, we take a look at their options for this month's draft.

Draft Hand

Picks 53, 63, and 88.

The Tigers' list management brain trust will be tasked with digging deep this year in order to find some diamonds in the rough with their limited draft capital, boasting just three picks after exchanging two first-round picks and two second-round picks to the Giants for Taranto and Hopper, respectively.

However, sourcing talent further down the draft order is something the Punt Road club has had success achieving in past years, nabbing the likes of premiership players Jayden Short, Kane Lambert, and Jason Castagna at the 2014 Rookie Draft, as well as snatching up Nathan Broad with Pick 67 in 2015, Jack Graham at No. 53 in 2016, Ben Miller with Pick 63, Liam Baker in the Rookie Draft in 2017, and Maurice Rioli Jr. at No. 51 in 2020.

While the Tigers currently won't enter the draft until Pick 53, that selection is likely to increase its place in the queue after early father-son selections and potential matched Academy bids after Pick 40.

The Tigers may also look to improve their spot in the draft order on the night through live trading of picks.

Ideal Prospects

Harry Lemmey:

Lemmey, a strong-leading, athletic West Adelaide prospect, could certainly fill the tall-forward void that is opening wider at Tigerland.

The issue for the Tigers is if he is taken before they're on the clock at No. 53, as Lemmey's range could extend to the opening half of the second round.

However, the injuries Lemmey has suffered since he burst onto the SANFL scene in 2021 may work in Richmond's favour if he slides to the 50s.

James Van Es:

If Richmond opts for a key defender, Van Es could be somebody the Tigers heavily consider in their pick range.

Like Josh Gibcus, Van Es hails from the Greater Western Victoria Rebels and has put his name forward as one of the better key defender prospects this year.

Also similar to Gibcus, one of Van Es' strongest traits is his intercept marking, which would surely appeal to Hartley and coach Damien Hardwick, who loves intercepting threats (see: Grimes, Vlastuin, Balta, and Alex Rance).

Tom Scully:

Like his West Adelaide teammate Lemmey, Scully is another leading forward the Tigers could consider in terms of fulfilling their imminent tall-forward need.

Scully, who has a soccer background and appears as more of a raw prospect, kicked 50 goals in the SANFL Under 18s this year and poses as a rangy forward-50 marking target.

The 18-year-old could be a target for Richmond with their second or third selection.

We all rave about the 2021 draft but imo we missed a trick when it came to our greatest needs.

Two glaring list weaknesses and we did little to address either imo.

I dont mind puttin it out there i thought Neal Erasmus at 9 was the go was happy to get Gibcus he was probably too good to overlook but there in Erasmus was a 190cm plus mid who could go fwd as well.

Did say Van Rooyen at 17 instead of Brown there is the quality young kpf we needed.
Sonsie we had to take being there at 28 and said so.
Having overlooked Gibcus i had Bazzo instead of Banks He was so highly toted as a key defender.
with 30 i wanted one of Blake Howes a tall fwd or we take a punt on Jack Williams a big KPF.

Ialso wanted us to cut at least one more player and get a pick around 40.
Williams as a kpf was likely to be there and we all knew a mid or two would slip and Draper was one i really liked along with Windhager.

For me that would have allowed us to target three mids two of them big two key fwds and a key defender.

Point being made is we have not taken a long term view when it comes to talls and to a lesser degree big mids.

Here we are discussing taking tall forwards at any cost this year when we had an opportunity to address the glaring need last year.

Brown went at 17 Van Rooyen at 19 in hindsight would people not agree it may have been more prudent to take the key fwd.

Had we gone down that path we would have at least two genuine key fwds in development and three big young mids in the system probably alleviating the need to trade for two big mids allowing us to take one and stay more involved in this years draft and next year.

There were alternative options and in any discussion about what we have done or havent done it is relative.

We go to the 2022 draft with a small draft hand the second small draft hand in three seasons.

I wanted JVR with 17.

Also wanted Bazzo with a late pick.

Personally not sold on Banks or Brown yet. Clarke didn't think we needed him tbh, looked like he had talent in his debut but I don't see him pushing out Bolton, MRJ, Cumberland etc.

Without knowing anything about the kid, I hope we aren’t going after a medium defender type.

At that weight he couldn't play if I'd eaten beans for breakfast.

Doesn't exactly look like Floss Mk2

We don't have a pick inside 40 to take him.  Fremantle can match any bid after 40 so sounds like made up BS to me

Foxsports claiming we will only be using one pick in the National Draft.

RICHMOND

Like Port Adelaide, Richmond is going to have very little to do this draft period after a busy trade period. The Tigers hold picks 53 and 63 and are likely to use just the first of those.

One of the draftee watchers on BF (Smythe) has done a full mock draft.

He has Jasper Scaife and Luke Teal going to Richmond.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For this whole last week I have been going through this (fairly thoroughly) trying to make sure the swaps and pick positions are in order as well as all the players I think will be drafted.
I think they are, and I think the positions are in order, so here is my final mock.

ROUND ONE
1 - GWS - Aaron Cadman
2 - BRIS - Will Ashcroft - Bid matched
haw trade 50, 52, 65 for pick 36
Freo trade 43, 44 for pick 35
Stk trade 47 for 2023 F3rd tied to WB
3 - NTH - George Wardlaw
4 - NTH - Harry Sheezel
5 - ESS - Mattaes Phillipou - I like him here and have for a while, I think ess do too.
6 - GC - Bailey Humphrey
7 - HAW - Elijah Tsatas
8 - GEEL - Jhye Clark
9 - WCE - Ed Allan - should not take the chance he gets taken before their next pick which is a big possibility, talk he may go earlier too, but if Clark falls to Geelong I believe they take him.
10 - STK - Cam McKenzie
11 - CARL - Jedd Busslinger
12 - WB - Rueben Ginbey
13 - BRIS - Jaspa Fletcher - Bid matched
14 - WCE - Oliver Hollands
15 - GWS - Jacob Konstanty
GWS trade 20, 21 to melb for 15 and F2nd - he will not last until their next pick and they want him, so they move up and grab him here whilst moving a pick out into next year, melb trade with 2 players in mind
16 - SYD - Matt Jefferson - making the fwd line of the future look very promising at the swans
17 - GWS - Brayden George
18 - COLL - Jake Ryan - word now has it they like him a lot, and he is a very Collingwood style of player, he won’t make it to their next pick and is best available that suits a need to help out their backline so I have him going here
19 - SYD - Lachlan Cowan
20 - MELB - Oli Hotton - might not make it here but the odds were fairly in that favor given who the teams above might take, so melb get a ripper here

ROUND TWO
21 - MELB - Harry Barnett - melb like him and this is probably how they get him, using that trade from gws
22 - WCE - Elijah Hewett
23 - ADEL - Max Michalanney - Bid matched
Nth trade 40 for 46 and F3rd tied to Coll
24 - WB - Josh Weddle
25 - CARL - Charlie Clarke
Ess trade 25 and F4th tied to syd to Carl for 29, 66 and F2nd - Carl jump up to grab Clarke here and get their wish of getting another player early, he will provide tackling pressure and toughness, and another scoring option
26 - NTH - Lewis Hayes
27 - HAW - Mitch Szybkowski
28 - COLL - Henry Hustwaite
29 - ESS - Alwyn Davey Jnr - Bid matched
30 - WCE - Darcy Jones
31 - COLL - Joe Richards - several clubs want him and someone will have to take him around this mark if they want him more, will be a perfect foil down fwd for the pies and replace Elliot eventually in a smooth transition
32 - STK - Coby Burgiel
33 - FREO - Kaleb Smith - Ethan Phillips is a chance here, but I don’t think Jed Adams will go in the ND leaving him to get listed by Freo anyway in the rookie draft so they go for a very attacking, super quick player here with fwd nous as well, he plays with intent and is athletic necessary fits the Fremantle style
34 - STK - Ethan Phillips
STK trade F2nd to gws for 34 - Stk jump up to fill a need and grab the Fothergill-Round-Mitchell medalist here
35 - STK - Jaxon Binns - fits a need they have sorely missed out on the wings
36 - PORT - Jaiden Magor
37 - FREO - Tom Scully
38 - HAW - James Van Es
39 - NTH - Isaac Keeler
melb trade 39 to Nth for F3rd - a fwd to help out who is also a dual position fwd who can pinch hit in the ruck, the need help in both areas so they jump up to grab him here and melb trade out to next yr

ROUND THREE
40 - WB - Lachlan Sullivan - gets the nod here from their vfl team especially with Dunkley leaving he fits the bill (also talk recently is that this is their plan)
41 - ESS - Harry Lemmey
Ess trade 55, F3rd to haw for 40 - I think ess will have faith that their new coach and new system can get the best out of lemmey and I don’t see him being able to run the Mitchell system at haw, munkara was an option but I think teams will show good faith towards the players wish to get to ess so haw get a pick next year and choose someone they think will fall to their next pick
42 - GWS - Harry Rowston - Bid matched
43 - SYD - Adam D’Aloia
44 - GC - Hugh Davies - suits a need especially with Rory Thomson retiring
45 - NTH - Cooper Harvey - Bid matched
46 - ESS - Anthony Munkara - Bid Matched - haw make the bid knowing ess will match just to make sure they can get who they want with that last pick which came from ess
47 - HAW - Noah Long - after keeping Nth and ess honest hawks grab Noah here as a mid/Fwd option with plenty of upside
48 - CARL - Max Gruzewski - couldn’t find a spot earlier for him, tried hard, but he suits a need here and I know they like him as a swingman
49 - WCE - Connor McDonald
wce trade F3rd tied to port to Coll for 49
50 - RICH - Jasper Scaife - maybe this is the guy that can fill that fwd need for the future, Freo may match but with Amiss showing huge promises, Taberner and Treacy there as well, and after taking Scully early I have them passing here with Jed Adams on the radar for the rookie draft with possibly another mid
51 - ADEL - Billy Dowling
52 - GEEL - Jed Hagan
53 - ADEL - Harry Cole
54 - PORT - Tom McCallum - suits a need and will free up Allir
55 - HAW - Harvey Gallagher - hawks get their guy here to provide run and carry as well as a scoring option from the Def
56 - RICH - Luke Teal - with a full injury free year should be much higher so a best available here
57 - GEEL - Blake Drury

Done deal for me.

Tall, weight actually not bad for an 18yo, 2 goal/game average.

Get it done tigers. Need is there and the trade period is gone.

Expert verdict: Who your club should take in this year’s draft

HeraldSun
20 November 2022

As the AFL world closes in on the 2022 National Draft, Fox Footy expert Mick Ablett has had his say on who your club should be targeting to bolster their stocks in 2023 and beyond.

RICHMOND

Picks: 53, 63

Mick Ablett says:
With the additions of former Giants star midfielders Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto, the Tigers are on their way to returning as genuine Premiership contenders. Now there is simply a need for speed. While Shai Bolton and Maurice Rioli tick these boxes, further outside leg speed would greatly assist. Could the Tigers find a mature age recruit like Isaac Smith was to give them the edge?

Draft Prediction:
While the Tigers won’t get their chance until late in the piece, there will still be talent on the board. Should a player like Swan Districts small forward Darcy Jones slip through, he would be an ideal candidate. Jones won the agility test at the draft time in 7.70sec to show just how elusive he is. Powerful defender James Van Es is also a watch.

This BF draftee watcher 'ModernArtillery' has Lemmey ranked at 17.

------------------------------------------------------------

These are my final rankings for the 2022 crop. I've separated them into tiers and offered a general comment of how I view each group. The tier descriptions are not a perfect formula, but I'm hoping it offers a bit of an explanation as to why some players sit higher/lower than others.

Tier 1
I'm selecting any of these guys if possible, regardless of list needs/fit. I obviously rate their talent but also see significant upside. I think there's scope for each of these players to be a number 1 or number 2 midfielder in a strong AFL side.

1. Harry Sheezel
2. George Wardlaw
3. Will Ashcroft
4. Elijah Hewett
5. Mattaes Phillipou

Tier 2
There's a little bit more fluidity for me within each tier after that top group. I'd be prepared to overlook Cadman or any of the midfielders for a KPD if it made most sense from a list need perspective. I view the ceiling of this group a shade below that of Tier 1 and probably see more things that could prevent them from reaching their ceiling than any of the prospects in that top group.

6. Aaron Cadman
7. Elijah Tsatas
8. Jhye Clark
9. Bailey Humphrey
10. Cam Mackenzie
11. Jedd Busslinger
12. Lewis Hayes
13. Harry Barnett

Tier 3A
I could have these prospects in any order and be equally satisfied. I think their floor is a fringe best 22 level prospect, but a ceiling of top 10 on an AFL list.

14. Mitch Szybkowski
15. Olli Hotton
16. Oliver Hollands

Tier 3B
Lemmey gets his own category because his ceiling fits into 3A, but I think his floor is lower than 3C. However, in isolation, I'd be prepared to take Lemmey over any of the guys in 3C.

17. Harry Lemmey

Tier 3C
I think the floor for these guys is fringe best 22, with a ceiling of 10-22 on a list. Essentially, I see a small gap between the best and worst case scenario for their careers, but have a fairly high level of confidence that they'll have a career at AFL level.

18. Coby Burgiel
19. Alwyn DaveyJr
20. Jaspa Fletcher
21. Charlie Clarke
22. Max Michalanney

Tier 4
One of my bigger groups, Tier 4 represents players who have the largest gap between ceiling and floor. My view is that the players in this group could legitimately represent top 10 on a list value or could be in and out of the system relatively quickly. I think it's highly likely that some of the guys in this group hit in a big way. Fit/role/opportunity will be critical for their development and ultimate success at the level.

23. Max Gruzewski
24. Jacob Konstanty
25. Jonti Schuback
26. Matthew Jefferson
27. Reuben Ginbey
28. Lachie Cowan

31. Josh Weddle
32. Harry Cole
33. Jakob Ryan
34. Henry Hustwaite
35. Sam Gilbey
36. Brayden George
37. Darcy Jones

Tier 5
This group consists of players that I view as lower end role players whose success I feel will be very dependent on opportunity at AFL level.

38. Jack O'Sullivan
39. Archie Lovelock
40. Adam D'Aloia
41. Phoenix Foster

Here’s a 2022 top 40 power ranking list, same contextual point as last time. One thing I would say about this draft is there’s great depth in terms of upside later on that’s being underrated largely. Can think of a few players who could turn out to be top-10 worthy in the future.

Then you’ve got guys like D’Aloia and Rowston who are prolific and should be solid role players. Michalanney will play plenty at Adelaide. Tom Scully could be anything, as could Van Es.

A couple of guys who might be taken super late, rookie or even go undrafted but have upside that could be moulded into longer AFL careers with talent are Lloyd Johnston, Josh Bennetts, Harvey Gallagher, Kyle Marshall and Ziggy Toledo. Knobel is a good size for a ruck.

Final point would be to highlight both Sam Gilbey and Jayden Davey. Both have great talent and have top-25 upside for whoever would take the risk. Injuries create a big question mark, but they deserve opportunities. Could be steals if they slide.

No idea myself TK but going by the various mock drafts there's definitely a chance (Lemmey more so than Keeler it seems). However, a few of the mock drafts also have both gone before our first pick.

In any case, hopefully all the NGAs and F/S in this draft push us up the draft order.

There will be a few KPF that they will look at who have ability that’s needs development, if/ whoever we get a KPF it will take a few / couple of year of development to making an impact in the seniors
MT is right, by the time the father sons and other upgrades have taken place, I’m hoping we will get a crack in the mid to late 40’s where the likes of Lemmy and Scully will possibly be available

Chris Doerre's phantom draft on ESPN has Lemmey and Scully going to Richmond.

Full mock draft here: https://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_/id/35089878/afl-2022-draft-phantom-draft-chris-doerre-espn-full-afl-phantom-draft-every-club-every-pick

51. Richmond - Harry Lemmey - West Adelaide (SA)

An athletic tall leading forward who displays a high work rate and was touted as a potential pick one contender coming into the season, Lemmey has struggled to live up to the expectation or take the next step in his footballing development. While he is of key position height, his style of play more closely resembles a super-tall flanker.

54. Richmond - Tom Scully - West Adelaide (SA)

A 204cm key forward who averaged 4.9 goals and 3.9 contested marks over his first eight SANFL Under-18 games, Scully was one of this year's hottest starters before a form slump in the second half of the year. Difficult to stop as a contested marking target inside 50m with his height and reach, Scully is at his best close to goal.

2022 AFL Draft Preview: Richmond

Michael Alvaro
central.rookieme.com
November 24, 2022

WITH season proper and trade period done and dusted, AFL fans and staff alike now turn their attention towards the draft (November 28-30). The chaos has settled on player and pick swaps, and budding prospects have completed their combines, leaving a nervous wait until they learn their fate.

In the next of our club by club previews, we take a look at the Richmond’s draft hand and offer insight into how the Tigers may utilise the picks at their possession. Having gone hard during trade period, they boast one of the thinnest draft hands but will look to extract late value.

2022 FINISH: 7th

CURRENT PICKS: 53, 62, 76, 82

FUTURE PICKS: RIC R2, RIC R3, RIC R4

ACADEMY/FATHER-SON NOMINEES: Nil.

OPTIONS:

Though its final place will fluctuate as academy and father-son bids roll in up the order, Richmond is set to enter the draft all the way back in round three. The Tigers boast four overall picks but with only 55-60 players expected to be picked up, they will likely only utilise two before upgrading Marlion Pickett to their senior list.

Having just bolstered their midfield in a big way, the Tigers could go down the key position route for some long-term cover. Though in a draft once lauded for its tall talent, there are admittedly few options who may fit the bill.

One prospect who makes sense is Will Elliott, who captained the Oakleigh Chargers but missed much of his top-age season with a knee injury. He, and fellow Charger Hudson O’Keeffe are rucks with developable traits and handy mobility. The former fits a key forward need, too.

Another Victorian ruck in Max Knobel may be in the frame as another project option, while versatile South Australian Phoenix Foster could also pique the Tigers’ interest. Along similar lines, fellow Croweaters Harry Lemmey and Tom Scully remain on the precipice of draft contention and offer potential late value as tall forwards.

Steering away from the key position realm, there are also plenty of running types set to be available. A mature-ager like Joe Richards may suit Richmond’s list profile as a small with good pace, though he has been rumoured to have suitors well up the order.

Hard-nosed midfielder-forward Archie Lovelock and outside utility Jonti Schuback loom as a couple of steals late in the piece, while crafty Tasmanian Seth Campbell could be up the Tigers’ ally. The same goes for inside ball winners like Adam D’Aloia and Hugh Bond, though the latter’s ability to double as a lockdown defender may be more appealing to Richmond’s needs.

KEY QUESTIONS:

– Will Richmond be satisfied with only using two picks in this year’s draft?
– What kind of late value can Richmond extract from its selections?
– Will Richmond opt for long-term or readymade talent?

Richmond is expected to take a key-position player with one of its two late draft selections (Picks 53 and 62). West Adelaide’s 202cm key forward Tom Scully, who booted 50 goals in the SANFL Under 18s competition, told SEN this week the Tigers had shown the most interest in him of the 12 AFL clubs he’d spoken to.

RICHMOND

Draft picks: 53, 62, 76, 82.

Contracted: 38 (one category B rookie).

List needs: Long-term defensive depth.

It’s anyone’s guess what the Tigers will do in this year’s draft, given they are currently not making their first pick until No.53, after securing ex-Giants stars Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto in the trade period. They are expected to use only two selections in the national draft and will promote Marlion Pickett to the primary list. The likes of Dylan Grimes and Robbie Tarrant will follow David Astbury in the not-too-distant future, so Richmond may opt for a tall defender. In that case, they will hope some, or any, of Jed Adams, James Van Es, Hugh Davies, Tom McCallum and Ethan Phillips are still available. They have five primary and/or category A rookie-list openings but may leave a rookie spot open for a pre-season or mid-season draft recruit, as they have done in previous years.

Bloke lost me at the start when he prioritised defensive depth as our biggest list need.

The only type of defender we lack is a Vlastuin clone if you like.

Talls say hello.  Tarrant, Balta, Gibcus, Nyuon, and Miller if we have the need. Then theres Grimes and Broad who regularly play much smaller for us.
Rioli Banks and Brown as running defenders all say hello then theres Mansell and Vlastuin its only really the last two where depth is being pushed.

According to Callum Twomey ...

Picks: 53, 62, 76, 82 (likely to use two selections)

Richmond has the latest draft start of any club and have to sit and wait until late in the third round before opening its account. It's all a little bit of luck as to who gets through at that part of the draft, but Richmond's recruiting team has been working on the back-end of the pool for some time given they had their eyes set on trading for Giants pair Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper from a long way out. Defender Luke Teal, who trained with the Tigers in the pre-season, could be on the board around this area and may be a consideration, while Tasmanian Seth Campbell (a medium forward) could also be a chance, with key defenders James Van Es and Tom McCallum likely to have been already snapped up by the time its the Tigers open their account. Rye Penny, a rebounder out of defence, could be another in the mix, the same for on-baller Billy Dowling.

Listing the ideal draft prospect for every AFL club

Which player will each club have atop their list come draft night?

Mitch Keating
zerohanger.com
November 27, 2022

Richmond

Harry Lemmey
Position: Key Forward
State: South Australia
State League Club: West Adelaide
Community Club: Flagstaff Hill
Date of Birth: 30/01/04
Height: 200cm
Weight: 95kg

With the Tigers not entering the draft until Pick 53 we take a bit of a different look at the class of 2022.

While a Cadman or Matthew Jefferson would be perfect for Punt Road, a more realistic key-forward selection for Richmond is South Australia's Harry Lemmey.

Lemmey is a formidable key forward who could learn a lot from Jack Riewoldt in 2023 before the Tigers champion passes on the baton.

AFL Draft 2022: Richmond re-loading as regeneration continues at Tigerland

Jono Baruch
innersanctum.com.au
28/11/2022

Richmond enters the draft with its list in transition, but not much draft capital to play with.

An active Trade Period saw the Tigers part with their two selections in the first round of the draft this year and a future first selection in next year’s draft to secure both Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper will see the Tigers only enter the draft late in proceedings on Tuesday night.

Starting at pick 53, the Tigers likely only take two selections in the National draft, using a final selection to upgrade Marlion Pickett to the Tigers’ senior list.

Re-loading but regeneration and transition continue

The flag heroes of Richmond’s recent success and steadily drawing their respective careers to a close as the next generation of Richmond stars is emerging.

Josh Caddy, Shane Edward, and Kane Lambert, all multiple premiership players in the most recent era hung up the boots this season after David Astbury retired at the end of 2021.

The Tigers started the replenishing of their young stocks last season, adding Josh Gibcus, Tom Brown, Tyler Sonsie, Sam Banks, and Judson Clarke to an already impressive core of young cubs including Jack Ross, Maurice Rioli Jr, Noah Cumberland, Shai Bolton and more.

The Tigers loaded up in the trade period, proving that their window is still well and truly open despite a nail-biting Elimination Finals exit this season. Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt are going around again with the pair deep in the twilight of their decorated careers and Richmond is going all in to deliver two of thier all-time greats a send-off flag.

Who will be there when they enter?

It’s a legitimate question for the Tigers to ponder as they sit there waiting. The Tigers have indicated they want a young key forward to add to the list, to start their development under Riewoldt’s tutelage. South Australian pair Tom Scully and Harry Lemmey are two options that could still be available by the time they enter the draft with Cadman and Jefferson to be well off the board by then.

The Tigers would also have an eye on mature-age prospect, Ethan Phillips as an intercept defender from Port Melbourne to give extra assistance and depth to the young key backs Noah Balta and Josh Gibcus already in the backline. Phillips is the recipient of this years Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal, the award given to the most promising young talent in VFL competition. Its winner has been drafted to an AFL list for 15 straight years.

At 23 years old, having starred for Port Melbourne this year, averaging over 5.1 intercept marks per game is AFL ready to slot into the backline almost immediately. With both Dylan Grimes and Robbie Tarrant both in the twilight of their careers too, the Tigers would have an eye on seeing if Philips gets through to snap him up.

AFL draft guide: The picks, likely prospects and possible scenarios

Ben Waterworth and David Zita
Fox Sports
November 28th, 2022 3:56 pm

RICHMOND

Picks: 53, 62, 76, 82

Latest intel:

Like Port Adelaide, Richmond isn’t going to be doing much after trading its draft capital out for Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper. Although it’s understood the Tigers are keen to use one of their late picks to secure a key forward, with West Adelaide’s Tom Scully — 202cm prospect that booted 50 goals in the SANFL Under 18s competition this year — last week revealing Richmond had shown the most interest in him of the 12 clubs he’d spoken to. There’s also speculation the Tigers could target a key defender with one of their selections.

Best-case scenario:

One of the top-rated tall backs, like James Van Es, Tom McCallum, Ethan Phillips and Hugh Davies, slide and are still available at the Tigers’ first selection.

Worst-case scenario:

Their aggressive trade period has left them with no capital — either in this year’s or next year’s draft — to work with, so they don’t get a draft board ‘slider’.

Yep, makes it so boring. I can understand the NFL doing it, they have 250+ draft picks. And the time remaining clock... as if Norf need 5 minutes each to select pick number 2 and 3, it's just so Johnno and the hosts can waffle on for 5 minutes.

Do you think there may have been a bit of a directive from the AFL that the kids have to be excited no matter where they're going? The last few years have been a bit of an ordinary look, Bruhn, the Essendon guy saying Vic side only, Horne-Francis as well.
I don't think anyone could fake excitement after being drafted to Norf :nope.

36 senior listed players
3 category A rookies
1 category B rookie

Given we now have 36 senior listed players then we are allowed 6 category A rookies (A total of 42 players). So, we can use 3 picks in the rookie draft.

ps. We also have a spare Cat. B rookie spot (allowed two).

What can I say.

Right now I don't even care if these two kids work out I am just bitterly disappointed that the club has failed to draft a key forward yet again, not a single one. Heck even Scully was there with our first pick could have given him a shot once we missed out on the other kid.

Season over probably but for arguments sake we would play two of Miller, Balta and Gibcus forward.

Backs would be Grimes, Tarrant and one of those 3.

Personally I don't think our recruiting is amazing if you take 3 kids I think it's expected that at least 1 makes it every year. Dow to date and RCD recently quite disappointing.

The reality is that any KP players worth taking were gone already before our picks so they took best available. I suspect we will select one today during the rookie draft.

A bloke drafted last year mid season called Bauer will get an opportunity

Also agree with Andy, we have Balta and Miller who can both play forward

Although I'm disappointed we didn't take a big forward we can't just select one for the sake of it. Could you imagine the outrage on here if we did?

Reckon it would be worse than the outrage over that we didn't take one last night ;D

Hardly likely that any 18 year old key position draftee in taken by us in this year's draft, especially 3rd round selections, would be able to come in and cover for either Riewoldt or Lynch in 2023

Would need a mature age KPP recruit in today's draft to be of any help next year

The reality is clubs were prepared to trade late picks in preparation for acadamy and f/s selections next year.
Disappointed we did not try to trade for an earlier pick to get a crack at Lemmy or Scully when they were both still there in the 40's.
People do realise unlike smalls talls take time to develop.

In saying that im happy with the Smith selection but a bit bemused we did not do more to get a kpf or two into our system.

‘Bidney’: Tigers cheeky sledge to Swans after bidding frenzy shook up draft

Ben Cotton
Fox Sports
November 30th, 2022

Richmond has cheekily labelled Sydney ‘Bidney’ after the Swans shook up the 2022 AFL draft with several bids on prospects to disrupt the plans of rival clubs.

Sydney’s polarising moves became a key talking point out of the draft, with the Tigers, regular bidders themselves, acknowledging the scheming.

“Now we’ve handed the mantle to ‘Bidney’, so it’s good they’ve got that job now,” Richmond recruiter Matthew Clarke said, per the Herald Sun.

Every AFL club’s 2022 draft haul assessed — and how their new recruits will fit in

Ben Waterworth
Fox Sports
November 30th, 2022

Foxfooty.com.au analyses every AFL club’s selections at the 2022 national draft and how the new players can help your team.

RICHMOND

Picks (at start of the draft): 53, 62, 76, 82

Selections: Kaleb Smith (49), Steely Green (55)

Pounced on a couple of WA-based sliders who should suit the Richmond style. Smith, a speedy small defender-midfielder who’s been compared to Adam Saad, had been linked to the Eagles and Dockers in the second round, so the Tigers were more than happy to pounce late on night two. Green, too, had second-round interest, but the hard-working on-baller landed at Richmond and should fit into Damien Hardwick’s system with aplomb.

Grade: B-

Scully was available with our first pick, it was lemmey and keeler who were taken just before us so we never got a chance with them.

I never have and probably never will follow the draft close enough to say we should have gone X and Y players over the ones we picked, especially for picks as late as the ones we had. Just from a list perspective they don’t seem to fill an obvious need like a key forward would have. It just goes back to drafting on talent over need, if those are the best players in the recruiters eyes available at our picks then so be it. Like someone said above there’s no point drafting players just because they are tall and have played forward in their junior careers.

In any case, good luck to the 2 boys selected - I hope they go on to have great careers at the RFC!

Point being made those talls were rated by other clubs to take before us we must have had em on the radar at around the picks we had.

Lemmy in particular had to be on our radar when still there at pick 40 did we not try a trade up.
Carlton certainly saw enough in him to take at 47 and Port saw enough in both Scully and Marshall to get em in their system at 53 and 59.

Of course with players taken so late their is risk as their is risk with the two picks we had.
If we are not prepared to take a punt on talls who have enough good attributes but may take a bit of time with late nd picks or rookie picks where the hell do we get em from.

I still think we take so many smalls because while a lot of em may only end up servicable they are less risk in you may get something out of them. When it comes to taking a chance on talls we are gun shy imo scared to get criticism if they don't work out.

Well hello with late picks regardless of size you will have more misses than hits.It should be expected.

Sadly , I think out recruiters have missed the boat, big blokes take 2 to 3 years to develop at least and by not picking a KPF to develop we now will have no choice but to sell the farm to get a good on in the future.
No matter how good the kids we recruited are , most are  currently 3rd (at best )in line where the recruitment of a key forward was essential imo as insurance for probable injuries
Bad planning really as we should have a few already developing

Any key forward FA's coming up next year?

Anticipating Cotchin and Riewoldt retirement, maybe Tarrant, possibly even Grimes if soft tissues continue but hopefully not.

Obviously we won't have any real draft capital to trade.

Round 1 verdict: The draftees most likely to debut immediately at every AFL club in 2023

RICHMOND

The Tigers pounced on a couple of WA-based sliders – and one of them has capability to play a role in the senior team if called upon early. Agile 179cm midfielder Steely Green played eight WAFL league matches – often an excellent grounding for the AFL level. It’s highly unlikely he’ll be in the Round 1 mix, but don’t be surprised if he gets an opportunity as early as the middle part of the 2023 season. Kaleb Smith, a speedy small defender-midfielder who’s been compared to Adam Saad, will take a bit more time to develop. If the Tigers cop a few injuries to their top key defenders, rookie acquisition Tylar Young – a 196cm, 92kg backman plucked from Richmond’s VFL program – might be ready to go.
