#49 Richmond: Kaleb Smith:

One of this draft's most damaging rebounding defenders, Smith is a line breaker with speed and power who aggressively takes on the game with ball in hand and hurts opposition sides with his penetrating kick. Has speed and agility++

EAST FREMANTLE
DEFENDER
#16
Kaleb Smith

Height: 181cm

Weight: 77kg

D.O.B: 20-11-2004

Leagues: WAFL Colts

A relative unknown out of Western Australia, Kaleb Smith has timed his run at the end of the year to bolt into draft contention. The East Fremantle product battled injury in 2022 and missed out on state Under 18 representation, but did some of his best work for Wesley College in the PSA competition before ending the WAFL Colts season in blistering form.

A dashing half-back who also doubled as a powerhouse in attack while playing school football, Smith's athleticism is something which translates well to his game. He plays with serious attacking intent from behind the ball, taking the game on at speed and breaking lines at will. Defensively, Smith is also a sound interceptor having averaged nine intercept possessions at WAFL Colts level, going with his solid rate of 21.7 disposals.

A high-impact type, Smith's back end of the season is what catapulted him into draft contention. His averages improved to 24 disposals and nine rebound 50s across his last four outings for the Sharks, putting him in the realm of bolter possibility. Had he been able to perform over the course of a full season, or on the national stage, Smith may have been talked about higher but remains a chance to have his name called come November on the back of his promising glimpses and obvious developable traits.

Smith becomes a Tiger

Richmond has used its first selection (No. 49 overall) in the 2022 national draft to recruit East Fremantle utility Kaleb Smith.

Recruited from: East Fremantle/Western Australia
Position: Midfielder/half-back
Height: 180cm
Weight: 77kg
DOB: 20/11/04

What the Richmond recruiters say about Green...

"Kaleb split his time this year between Wesley College in Western Australia's PSA competition, and East Fremantle in the WAFL Colts competition.

"He displayed terrific potential in all three areas of the ground throughout the season. For East Fremantle, he played as a defender where he averaged 14 kicks, eight handballs and seven rebound 50s per game, catching our eye with his elite leg speed and ability to open up the game from the back half.

"He also demonstrated terrific forward craft playing for Wesley College, proving to be a difficult match up with his aerial ability and nous in front of goal.

"Kaleb is a powerful athlete who has tremendous upside and we welcome him and his family to Tigerland."

Kaleb seems what you want at the that pick, athletic player with a high upside who slipped because he missed champs. Hard at it. Also our WA scouting has a great track record.

Btw Smith has one of the fastest 20 meter times at Richmond

Looks like he has some serious upside. Good pick.
Trust that we have a plan regarding restocking the list with talls.

AFL draft 2022: Wesley College coach Michael Broadbridge backs bolter Kaleb Smith for the AFL

Jordan McArdle
The West Australian
Sun, 28 August 2022

Wesley College coach Michael Broadbridge has urged West Coast to take a look at explosive utility Kaleb Smith who he believes “has AFL written all over him”.

The 17-year-old, who averaged 20 disposals, four clearances, four score involvements and booted 13 goals in 11 eight appearances for Wesley this season, earned a State draft combine invitation following a strong finish to his Year 12 PSA campaign.

He missed the start of the season with a knee injury and another game through illness but produced two of his best games to cap it off, with five goals against Geez Church in the penultimate round and 25 possessions, seven clearances and a goal on Guildford.

“Hopefully he’ll play his best footy in the last few games of the season,” Broadbridge said.

“He got off to a slow start because of injury and he was probably peaking in form the last couple of games really.

“It’s good that he’s got a combine invitation, I think he’ll test really well in the power and speed side of things.

“He’s super quick and from a skills perspective, he’s pretty tidy as well and there’s obviously a few clubs aware of what he can do.”

Broadbridge felt Smith, who has played everywhere from half-back to wing, midfield and forward, would be just what the Eagles’ engine-room needs.

“A club like West Coast don’t have much of his type of player on their list,” he said.

“They don’t have speed, they don’t have power, they’ve just got a lot of one-pacers.

“The very best sides have a few of those guys floating through the midfield and forward-line like Jordan De Goey, Christian Petracca, Patrick Dangerfield, Dustin Martin.

“They’re big names I know but you need that sort of player to win AFL premierships.

“He’s just got those AFL capabilities that other kids don’t have.

“He plays half-back for East Fremantle colts and he breaks lines.

“We played him on a wing last year at PSA level and he just terrorises the opposition with his speed and ball-carrying ability.

“Then we realised when we put him forward that he could jump and mark the ball and kick goals as well, we didn’t have much of that so we left him forward.

“We played him on ball a bit as well and he ran out of centre bounces and kicked goals from there.

“He’s got strings to his bow but he’s still got development left in his body and his game so there’s lots of upside to him as well.

“He can burst away, he can jump vertically and he’s a good kick with clean hands, so he’s got those traits with AFL written all over them.”

Smith returned to WAFL colts with a big performance in a losing cause against Claremont at Revo Fitness Stadium, gathering a game-high 25 possessions across half-back.

Good get imo. another Sharks product, they are the club who just keep on giving when it comes to recruits.
I can see why he got picked up, i liked McQuilkin as well who i thought would also get picked.

This is a bit of a theme with me but imo i think we take small players because they are safer bets than the mediums and talls after a certain point.

Glad to get Smith but just a bit disappointed that we didnt see fit to climb up the draft order a few spots to have a go at Lemmy.
It seems we just can"t identify talls late in drafts.

I dont get the best available output these are picks in the 50's and small or tall they all have shortcomings and are a bit of a punt.
If we fail to not take any talls regularly then we have no chance of finding any decent ones.

Title: Kaleb Smith put on the Long-Term Injury List (RFC)
Post by: one-eyed on May 26, 2023, 05:21:08 PM
Richmond youngster Kaleb Smith will be placed on the Club’s inactive list, ruling him out for the remainder of the 2023 season.

The West Australian suffered a bone stress injury to his right navicular bone in early February, with the delicate rehabilitation program’s timeline now pushing beyond the season.

Richmond General Manager- Football Talent Blair Hartley said that Smith had approached the “tricky” injury and rehabilitation with great professionalism.

“We are very disappointed for Kaleb and the Club that he will not play any football in his debut season, particularly after how much he impressed us with his pre-season match play,” he said.

“He has fitted into the group well, worked diligently with our medical staff, and been very positive throughout his time on the sidelines.

“Unfortunately, after seeing some specialists outside the Club and with a stagnating recovery timeline, we have decided to place him as inactive with a view to his long-term future.

“We will continue to treat Kaleb’s injury carefully through this period.”

A real unknown given his long injury.

Physique looks good though which is nice, otherwise he's just another small, skinny HBF.

Let's hope that's wrong.

Sure does plenty of pace good ball user takes the game on and is not afraid of contact.
Another  good kid from the club that keeps giving in East Freo
