Former Sydney Swans ruckman Sam Naismith is reportedly set to be signed as a delisted free agent by Richmond.
Naismith was overlooked in the mid-season draft this year despite an impressive campaign for Port Melbourne, which followed 30 senior games over a decade at the Swans as injury wreaked havoc on his body.
The Herald Sun reports the Tigers will bring Naismith in as ruck cover for Toby Nankervis, with Ivan Soldo having left the club for Port Adelaide during the trade period.
Naismith, 31, was taken in the 2013 rookie draft by the Swans and was delisted in 2022.

Richmond will hand former Sydney ruckman Sam Naismith a career lifeline by signing him as a delisted free agent as early as this week.
Naismith’s remarkable story of persistence will see him back on an AFL list after three knee reconstructions and only 30 games in his decade at Sydney.
The 31-year-old put together an excellent season at Port Melbourne but was overlooked in the mid-season draft despite clubs, including Geelong, closely scrutinising him as a back-up ruckman.
He averaged 31 hitouts and 10 hitouts-to-advantage in his season at Port Melbourne and can join the Tigers in the delisted free agency period which opens on Wednesday and runs to November 10.
The Tigers are also excited by the prospects of Ben Miller and Samson Ryan getting chances to ruck behind co-captain Toby Nankervis.
Naismith had 15 knee and shoulder surgeries across his Sydney career despite only 30 AFL games, having played his last AFL game in round 4, 2020 before being delisted at the end of 2022.
The 206cm big man was rookie-listed by Sydney in the 2013 draft and played in the 2016 Grand Final against the Western Bulldogs.
But amid continuing knee issues he also had personal heartbreak, losing sister Kristi to pancreatic cancer in 2020 during Covid.
He told Code Sports this year the move to Port Melbourne had rekindled his love of the game after his injury issues and family tragedy.
“I fell out of love with the game,” Naismith said.
“I haven’t enjoyed the game over the last couple of years. I didn’t go to ‘Buddy’s 1,000’, I watched it on the couch at home.
“There were a lot of Swans games I didn’t want to watch at all. I felt like I didn’t want to be around footy anymore.
Richmond is the perfect landing spot for Naismith given he will believe he has the opportunity to play regular senior football given the Tigers played both Nankervis and Soldo late in the season.

Richmond has signed former Sydney Swans ruckman Sam Naismith as a delisted free agent.
Naismith, 31, joins the Tigers following a consistent 2023 season with Port Melbourne in the VFL, where he averaged 14 disposals and 37 hitouts per game across 14 matches.
Prior to spending last season at the Borough, Naismith played 30 games for the Swans between 2013 and 2022, after originally being selected via the rookie draft at the end of 2012.
From mid-2016 to the end of 2017, the 205cm ruckman from Gunnedah featured regularly in the Swans' senior side, including the 2016 AFL Grand Final, before several knee injuries hampered his career.
Naismith said the second chance at an AFL club "means everything".
"I'm super excited. It was an opportunity that I didn't think was going to happen, and I think my last five years of working really hard to get back to this position is paying off now," he said.
"Everyone that has supported me over the last few years, it's been pretty tough times through that journey and this just validates everything that I've worked hard for during that time.
"The finish line is not done, I'm keen to attack pre-season and meet everyone and I just want to get a game."
The new Tiger credits his year at VFL level for reigniting his passion for the game.
"As soon as the season started, I was super keen to just get back on an AFL list and prove that I'm ready to get back," Naismith said.
"Once I stepped on the field and started playing, I just enjoyed the process. Finding the love for the game again through Port Melbourne, I had so much fun especially with the group there... When you're happy, you play your best footy, and I found solace in that.
"I've learnt a lot of stuff about my body and I'm in a position now where I know what works for me and I'm feeling fit and strong."
He will be reunited with fellow ruckman and former Sydney teammate Toby Nankervis, the pair having spent three seasons together between 2014 and 2016.
"I can't wait to play with Toby. I think we played some of our best footy together when we were in Sydney and I want to wind back the clock to those days," Naismith said.
"With Ivan (Soldo) going to Port Adelaide, there was an opportunity there. If there's a position to help the young guys develop... and to work with Toby again... to push each other and also the developing guys.
"I love tackling, I love hitting bodies, and protecting my teammates... Whatever the team needs, I want to do it."

We were always going to take a mature ruckman on the cheap when Soldo left. Well they dont come much cheaper and he provides cover if Nankervis goes down and Ryan does not progress.
Feel for this bloke every time he started progressing he copped an injury. He did look decent at times when fit.

Naismith lauded by Port Melbourne coach
Richmond ruck recruit Sam Naismith had a profound impact in just one season at VFL club Port Melbourne, both on and off the field.
The former Sydney ruckman, who joined Port Melbourne this year, impressed the Borough’s coach Adam Skrobalak with his attitude from the time he arrived at the club.
Skrobalak, an assistant coach with St Kilda before taking the coaching reins at Port, sang Naismith’s praises in the lead-up to the AFL’s mid-season rookie draft.
“He has come down here and just worked his butt off and shown he is definitely up to it, not just at stoppage but around the ground,” Skrobalak said.
“He’s been fantastic for us so far . . . he has really led the way as a leader.
“He’s very physical, tackles very, very hard.
“Any AFL club that sees his ability not only to win hit-outs and clearances, but to follow up and help your smalls, I think he can slot in no problem at all.”
Last week, when the Tigers secured Naismith’s services as a delisted free agent, Skrobalak again paid tribute to Naismith.
“Sam bought into Port Melbourne from day one,” Skrobalak said.
“Good things happen to good people.

Sam Naismith has been through more devastation - on and off the field - than anyone should. He tells Josh Gabelich about his journey back to the AFL

THIRTEEN players moved clubs on deadline day. Sam Naismith wasn't one of them.
But amid the mania of the final day of the trade period on October 18, Richmond called. Reluctantly, the Tigers were finally prepared to grant Ivan Soldo his wish. Now they needed to find a readymade replacement.
Naismith was sitting at the pottery wheel in the tiny studio behind his house in Melbourne's bayside when his phone started buzzing. With Soldo completing a move to Port Adelaide early on that Wednesday morning, Richmond list manager Blair Hartley called Naismith's agent, Ben Williams from Players Ink, to see if his client was interested in trialling for a rookie spot during the pre-season supplemental selection period.
Everything accelerated from that call. Naismith was summoned to the Swinburne Centre at Punt Road the following day to sit down with Hartley and Richmond recruiting boss Matt Clarke. Then he underwent a medical 24 hours later, where the Tigers were convinced the beaten-up 31-year-old still has the physical capacity to play at the highest level. A meeting with new senior coach Adem Yze was the next order of business.
By the time Naismith returned home on the Friday afternoon, he had a contract for 2024. The Tigers had committed to selecting him as a delisted free agent when the window opened at the start of November.
In the space of 36 hours, Naismith was back in business, the very business that had toyed with his heart for more than a decade.

When Naismith, a 206cm ruckman, was delisted by Sydney last year, he had not played a game at any level in two seasons and just two in the AFL since the end of 2017. In all, he managed just 30 senior appearances across nine seasons at the Swans due to a devastating run of injuries. When he was cut, his time in the AFL appeared over.
Fremantle sniffed around at the end of last year, only to kick the tyres and move on. But after signing with VFL standalone club Port Melbourne, Naismith emerged as one of the best ruckmen outside the AFL in 2023, averaging 37.1 hitouts and 13.9 disposals per game.
Geelong considered him ahead of the Mid-Season Rookie Draft but passed. It appeared that ship had departed the harbour. Naismith was at peace with that. But Soldo's move opened the door for an unlikely second chance, at an age when second chances seldom materialise.
"At the start of the year, I was so keen to prove my body was fine and I could get back on an AFL list," Naismith tells AFL.com.au.
"I knew that I could still play footy, I just ran out of time at the back end of my time at Sydney. I just realised I was happy playing again and knew that if I had a good first half of the year, I would be in contention to get back on a list.
"The mid-season draft came around and I thought I was a chance, but it didn't happen. (But) I didn't think it was the end of the world because I was enjoying footy so much at Port Melbourne.
"That whole season I just fell in love with footy again. I met a great bunch of guys, made a whole heap of friends. At the end of the year, I didn't think this would happen, but then I got a phone call and things have changed.
"When you're not playing, you don't feel part of it. For a long time at Sydney, I was just the guy on the bike; 10 new kids come through every year (and) by the end of 2022, I had played with seven blokes. No one had known that I actually did play footy. So being out there this year was just amazing. But to be honest, through all my injuries, I have always believed that I'm still good at playing footy. That's what I want to prove here."

Injuries are a central part of Naismith's journey, but only reveal part of his story. The three knee reconstructions and more than a dozen other operations have been well documented. The ACL tears were unlucky, they usually are. But beyond the football setbacks that cut him down in his prime, he has dealt with more private, more traumatic battles.
While recovering from his third ACL surgery, when the graft didn't attach and cost him another two-and-a-half years on the sidelines, his sister Kristi was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, less than a decade after his father passed away from bowel cancer.
It was a brutal time for the entire family. Coupled with his injury woes, Naismith's mental health suffered.
Kristi lost her battle in May, 2020. Weeks later, Naismith played what would be his final game for the Swans. He damaged his ACL at training in the days beforehand, but told only two of his teammates and no one else, so determined was he to play in honour of his late sister.
Amid all that heartache, Naismith's mum Debbie has been courageously fighting her own battle with breast and blood cancer in their hometown of Gunnedah, near Tamworth, in north-east NSW. It is a battle, devastatingly, that she is unlikely to win.
"At the end of the day, perspective is everything," Naismith says.
"I think in football clubs you get caught up with game after game and you don't have that real world perspective. I went through my ACL injuries when my sister was really sick and that made it clear to me that what I was going through was nothing in comparison to what she was going through. That taught me to push hard through the recovery, because she was pushing hard through hers.
"I had no reason to complain; I was on a really good wage, I was healthy, my knee was just sore. There was nothing life-threatening about my situation. I think that perspective really helped me recover. There was a lot of stressful times and a lot of darkness with my mental state going through all that."
Debbie had been hoping to make it to Melbourne this year to watch her son play for Port Melbourne, but wasn't able to travel due to her chemotherapy treatment. But when Sam gets a game for Richmond in 2024, good luck trying to stop her making the 12-hour drive to the MCG.
"Mum is so excited," Naismith says. "Being able to share this with her and my brother and sister and the rest of my family has been so special. Knowing they can watch me while I'm playing brings us together for two or three hours on the weekend."
At the Tigers, Naismith will again link up with Toby Nankervis, Richmond's co-captain and formerly Naismith's ruck understudy at the Swans. Having been stuck in the queue behind Naismith as Sydney reached the Grand Final in 2016, Nankervis was lured to Punt Rd in a recruiting masterstroke that helped set the club on course for the three premiership wins that followed.
Now they're back at the same club together, but only after Nankervis provided Hartley and Clarke with a glowing endorsement.
"I have always kept in contact with Toby quite loosely – he is hard to get a hold of on the phone – but at Sydney we were tight," Naismith says.
"He has come to Richmond and won three flags and become a captain. What a story. I'm really hungry to either fight Toby for that No.1 spot or play with him. We played a lot of footy together when we were in Sydney and we complemented each other really well."

When Naismith received that life-altering phone call in October, he was doing what he does most days: creating things with his hands. He turned to pottery at a point in his life when he didn't realise how much it would do for him.
During the pandemic, while he was recovering from yet another operation, an opportunity presented to learn the craft in a garage in Tamarama in Sydney's eastern suburbs. It was the escape he needed.
Now it has become a business, a burgeoning pottery start-up called Lucklove Studio, which represents the next phase of his life when the football chapter finally closes.
"It is something that I used as a mindfulness exercise to escape my own thoughts and feelings," he says.
"You can't actually think of anything while you're doing pottery because it is very sensory. The environment is very uplifting.
"All the people I've met in that industry are so supportive and uplifting. There are no egos or competition; you just build each other up, which is worlds apart from football clubs. You learn to go slower and make mistakes. At the end of the day, it is dirt.
"For a long time, it was the first time I was happy. Now being able to teach others in classes or even making stuff for family and friends, it has mentally refreshed me."
As we speak, Naismith drinks out of a reusable coffee cup he made with his own hands. By Christmas, expect everyone at the Tigers to be sipping their lattes out of a Lucklove Studio creation.
It would have been understandable if Naismith opted not to tread this path again. Instead, he is willingly wading back in, ready to see where this path takes him next.

It's not your typical pastime for a footballer, but the art of pottery has been a real game changer for Richmond recruit Sam Naismith.
Having battled many challenges on and off the field, the creative outlet has helped revive the ruckman's career.

If his body/knees can finally hold up under the rigours of AFL level as it did last year at VFL level with Port Melbourne, then he may surprise quite a few. He's just had rotten luck with injury his whole career. As you rightly say Damo, he deserves a change of luck.

Without Martin, Taranto, Prestia and Nankervis, Richmond’s undercard of midfielders fought back valiantly after a torrid beginning.
Max Gawn, Jack Viney and Christian Petracca had done what they pleased early but Thomson Dow, Jack Ross and Jacob Hopper in particular worked their way into proceedings to wrestle back momentum.
Sam Naismith, while unlikely to be a first choice ruckman, could prove to be a handy acquisition for the Tigers.
In the absence of his former Sydney teammate Nankervis, he worked well in tandem with Samson Ryan and provided plenty of ball for the Tigers mids to go after.
Naismith’s clever tap work in the middle helped his side get back into the game as the Tigers kicked 10 straight goals after conceding the first five.

With captain Toby Nankervis battling a foot injury that has him in grave doubt for Round 1, and long-term backup Ivan Soldo traded to Port Adelaide, the Tigers can be immensely relieved to have had the foresight to sign Sam Naismith as a delisted free agent in the off-season.
Having been cut by the Swans after six years of nearly uninterrupted injury concerns, including three separate knee reconstructions, Naismith, who has played a mere two AFL games since the end of 2017, impressed as much for his competitiveness and athleticism around the ground as for his ruckwork, which will come in handy for him when Nankervis returns.
Involved regularly in the Tigers’ transition from stoppages, he was more than a match aerobically for Pies duo Darcy Cameron and Mason Cox, while an impressive shark and baulk around an opponent in the forward pocket, albeit missing with his snap, belied a man wo has had as many knee issues as anyone in recent AFL memory.
With Samson Ryan a capable back-up, the Tigers will no doubt be hoping captain Nankervis returns as soon as possible – but until then, and perhaps even afterwards if he can show enough around the grounds to encourage Adem Yze to persist with him up forward, Naismith will be a vital asset.

Naismith now has two very solid performances under his belt, holding his own against Max Gawn in the match sim and the Darcy Cameron/Mason Cox combination in the AAMI Community Series match. The injury-hit former Swan moved well across the ground against the Pies, showing good agility for his size at ground level and taking a few eye-catching marks. I hope I am completely wrong but it appears that at best he is going to be a very good VFL ruckman.

He's not a dud IMO, just wasn't the right game to be playing him.
Don't think he can play with Nank period. Should have gone with Ryan.

He does some nice things and plays above VFL standard . He has limited forward craft- so it’s a horse’s for courses with regards to him .
I could see the logic behind playing him against Gawn .

Should only play when Nank is injured/suspended and even then I'd rather just get games into Ryan instead.... :shh

put it this way. If Samson Ryan was playing instead of Naismith what difference would it made for the game and for our future? 9 touches for plenty of game time is rubbish. FWIW Nank played a poor match too, but has runs on the board for this year anyway until we find someone else.
Naismith should never have played in this game ,and IMO for most games. He is a very average football player, and we aren't a retirement fund.

He's probably on virtually minimum wage and is clearly a solid ruck who was played when not required.
Held his own vs Witts who is a good ruck in R0.
There's just no spot for two dedicated rucks. We need a ruck/forward option badly and both Ryan + Kosi are more suitable to that role.

His a backup ruck to Nank and that's it and the perfect bloke for it. Ryan has form has done well lastb3 games deserves a block of games his got weaknesses like all players , but still baby as forward ruck.

I agree to a degree. Toby and Sam both lowered their colours though i dont think he got a hell of a lot of time onball.
Gawn is the best ruckman in the game it was never going to be easy for either. That was mostly down to Toby imo.
All of our forwards failed imo not just Sam. People having a go at his game but i think he gave just as much as Mykelti if not more.
Very little offensively from the smalls again and we wonder why we only kicked 5 goals.
The real problem was May and Lever got so much of the ball. Along with McDonald they took 30 marks thru the game. Surprising though between the three they took just 2 contested marks. They got most of those because they had an out number.
Hard enough for inexperinced players like Lefau and non forward Naismith to impact with out having to cope with an out number.
I agree he played mainly as a forward and did not do a lot. but and its just a different way to look at it. His game playing as a forward was better than the majority of games Ryan has dished up so far. In saying that i still think we should have played both.Lefau and Ryan who yes has kicked goals in recent weeks in the magoos as permanent forwards. Then rotated Toby and Sam thru there. evening up the numbers

The kicking into the forwardline was atrocious and did not help the forwards at all. A classic example was Nick kicking the ball high and long in the second quarter where it was Mansell against two Demons. No chance, it was easily rebounded and wasted a good build up. But having said that Naismith is not a forward and should not be played as one. He is a ruckman solely.

Is not the future so why the stuff play him and as a forward. That was embarrassing. If you really believe Yze is rewarding form then he should never have been selected. End of story
We got smashed by 7 goals. Proved nothing by playing an old has been like Naismith
