England invented soccer and spread it to the world then started losing. Same with the USA and basketball. it is now a genuine world game and its inventors have no divine right to win.

if there were fully fledged NBA or say NBA Asia teams in Sydney and melbourne they would attract 15,000 a night. Bball is huge and getting bigger in much of the world.

Dudes if any of you are sports nuts like me try this out.
I went to the Final last year at the Cage against Sydney and the atmosphere and noise is as good as any.
Have a look and try it out if there are any tickets left, you won't be dissapointed.

I did a search and it came up with front row tickets North A 34-35!! $77 dollars though! I'd love to go but it's a bit hard to justify that when I can watch it on Foxtel. The atmosphere would be terrific though.

I love the Tigers, but I think they are going to struggle to hold on to the title this year. Brisbane are very deep and are sharing the ball beautifully. They've been able to rest up Bradtke and McKinnon, (although the weeks rest is good for D-Mac, Stiff and Anstey who has a sore ankle) and Ebi Ere is on fire. Should be a great series!

Great win by the Tigers tonight. Forgot it was and turned it on at half time to see that they were down by 9 points.

It didnt take them long to get back to the lead and they ran away with it in the end winning by abour 14 points i think it was. Its a shame they choked on Friday night up in Brisvegas.

Yeah Tucker and DT exploded in the 3rd quarter, that lead they gained was never really secure though. The tigers lifted in defence in the second half too and have thrown out the Bullets offensive rhythm a little bit, can't wait for Game 3 and 4.

Cannot find any coverage of NBL games tonight, except Sydney on Fox
But the other games, can't even get scores.

Wondering how it survives against the AFL, Soccer etc

When Jordan was doing his thing in the late 80s/early 90s, the NBL was huge. Sellout crowds of 15,000 to the Tennis centre for Tigers vs Giants. There were even comments about basketball taking over and attracting kids away from footy. Once Jordan retired and the fad died it fell away big time.

And would like to know who got the highest points in each game.

Tigers won 96-90
Adelaide won 114-108 over the Dragons
Bullets 113-84 Crocs

In response to an earlier post the Tigers and Melbourne Magic had some titanic finals tussles during the early to mid 90's in front of huge crowds. In fact all 3 Melb teams
had a big rivalry against each other and all won titles in consecutive years.
In 92 Magic d Tigers in Grand Final
In 93 Tigers d Wildcats in Grand Final
In 94 Giants d 36'ers.

Back then it was huge and on Prime Time on Channel 10.

The basketball admin in Oz must have taken their advice from the old Soccer Australia when you have a successful club like the Sydney Kings in financial trouble and with poor crowds.

Anyway the Melbourne Tigers have levelled the GF series 1-1 tonight 104-93.

They played the Melbourne Tigers one and then ours straight after and Mark Fine said it was one thing they could learn from the RFC - get a decent theme song and replace 'yellow and black' with 'yellow and red'.

This Grand Final series has gone the way of the home team, yet last year the Tigers were able to beat the Kings in Game 5 in Sydney. Hopefully that successful experience last year will help get the Tigers over the line this year.

Is anyone here excited about Julius Hodge signing up with the Melbourne Tigers?

I am  :gotigers

HE CAN PLAY!!! He should lift the Tigers out of their scoring doldrums too, they can't always depend on Corletto banking 3's!

I know Hodge left the 36er's under a cloud, however, if I wasn't getting paid on time in my job, I wouldn't stick around for very long either. Please pay him on time Melbourne Tigers. It's not much to ask!

This has just happened in the Bucks Suns game. I hate seeing this sort of Injury on the TV but I follow the Bucks and he is the most Important player on the team this season and his loss will mean the end of season for them.

This a a huge man, imagine the forces.

Sad day for him, the Bucks and for Aussies at the World Champs this year.

You drunk? Kwame is close to the best defender in the league. He raped Howard earlier in the year and was sensational for the Bobcats last year. not sure how much Kwame Brown you watching, guy. Not sure at all. you been reading too much draft bust nonsense.
Title: Re: Basketball / NBA / NBL

:rollin :lol Close to the best defender in the league.  :lol   :rollin   Almost as funny as Kwame taking credit for Andrew Bynum's success.

Please point out the game where he "raped Howard."

He is a solid defender but he's a complete offensive liability.  He's lucky he's got size or he would have been out of the league or glued to the bench, Adam Morrison style, years ago.
Title: Re: Basketball / NBA / NBL
Post by: Coach on March 25, 2012, 10:32:26 AM
yep, you're clearly not watching any Kwame Brown basketball. You believe the journos who try to have a whack at him like they did with the Bynum stuff. ;D Please point out where he took credit for Bynum's success ;D and please don't say it was when he said "I taught him everything he knows" which was clearly a tounge in cheek comment. did you miss the game this year where Bynum could hardly score on Brown? He got all of his points when Biedrins was on the court, just like Howard did last season when Brown was off and the Bobcats had to chuck some scrub on.

There are very few centers who can score on Kwame without having to bust their ass. He's a very good defender and close to the best post defender in the league. He wasn't picked #1 in the draft and still playing for good money 10 years later for no reason. He's a solid player. He's average on offense but not a liability. He sets a lot of good screens and averages about 8 points. There's a reason why Miami and Boston were chasing him.

Indoor sports in Australia will always struggle due to the fact that TV rights and sponsorships do not earn enough to keep them afloat. Plus if you can only fit 4 figure crowds into your stadiums, gate takings and merchandising just wont cut it either.

I was into NBA massively during the mid 90's when basketball cards were the hottest thing going around.

NBA Action was a staple every Saturday lunchtime.

I still follow it a little bit now, like the Warriors because of the big Bogey man, also like the Bulls from the Jordan days and now with D. Rose.

Will take an interest now that Brett Brown is head coach at Phillie

He was the last coach of the my old team now departed North Melbourne Giants who played back in the days when the NBL was a decent competition  ;D

Disgraceful what they did to the Giants all those years ago with that "merger" that created the Titans - haven't been to a basketball game since the Giants disappeared  :'(

I thought my gold NBA hoops cards were going to make me a millionaire. I must still think that in the back of my mind, I still can't bring myself to throw them out!

I barrack for the Western Conference. I change teams every season now. I also reserve the right to change teams during the season until the trade cut off.

Yep Knicks for the love affair I have with New York City that has grown in my adult life.
Loved Patrick Ewing and John Starks in the 90's was shattered when Hakeem Olajuwon and the Rockets beat us in 7 games in 1994. Nowadays Carmelo Anthony is a gun.

Back in the 1990's when the NBA was at its peak here I obviously loved Jordan but hated the Bulls, loved Reggie Miller at Indiana and Shaun Kemp at Seattle and I loved NBA Jam played that at the pinny joint in the Deli at La Trobe Uni back in the day. ;D

Yep Portland with Clyde Drexler and Utah with John Stockton come to mind. Knicks in 94, Orlando Magic who were top dogs in the East with Shaq got swept in 95 by the 6th ranked Rockets led by Olajuwon. That was the height of the sport when MJ was at his peak even when he came back from his baseball hiatus can still remember the hype and his Bulls 45 singlet.
Can remember every night the sport bulletins back then on the news would just show a snippet of a MJ highlight after another. He really was a freak of a player.

I started following Miami in '04. Rookie Wade. Sort of liked the Lakers through school and poo just because everyone else did and then decided to actually follow it properly.  Actually jumped off a bandwagon to barrack for an average team and ride the lows of '08 to the excitement of hoping Beasley might become something. LOLLLLLL  :banghead

Was off work last week so got to watch a fair bit of Mike and Mike on ESPN. Knicks in ruins, reckon Melo is as good as gone. Been a bazillion rumours on destination from Bulls to Rockets, but most interesting I read the other day was that Bosh, James and Wade will consider a pay cut if it means they can land Melo under free agency. If that happened may as well just not play the next 5 seasons and write them up the trophies now.

He is from Akron and grew up 30 mins from Cleveland.

He has two young kids and a third on the way and wanted his kids to grow up in Cleveland.

I'm not a fan of Lebron,  but he isn't lying and has decided to go "home", and i reckon that's pretty cool personally.

Obviously doesn't mean much to him if he's moving back now, conveniently when Heat are on the decline ::). On another note, wait for all the "long time" Heat fans suddenly become "long time" Cleveland fans ;D. Seen some good memes about unburning jerseys ;D

I was saying something similiar to that this morning. All the sudden life long Cavs fans will appear everywhere. I'm sure Cavs gear will take over Rebel Sport soon.

Baynes, fair enough,  but how can anyone that calls themselves a sports reporter in Australia not recognise Mills. When I saw this the other day I thought imagine if Julian de Poop hurt Mills shoulder and got sued by the Spurs ;D

Great for Aussie basketball to have Aussies on both sides in the NBA finals  :thumbsup. Hopefully everyone stays injury free over the next few years and we get to see Bogut and Dellavedova as well as Paddy Mills and Aron Baynes all playing together in the same Boomers team.

And Irving if FIBA ever let him. Our starting 5 would be as good as any top NBA team.

Anyway, great to see Heat drop away and their 'fans' all go into hiding... only to come out as Cavs fans  ::) though in a 5 man team it goes to show just how good Lebron is. Could probably even carry the Pistons to a ring .... :pray :pray :lol If there is anyone who is going to be as great as Jordan at the end of their careers it is Lebron though he probably won't catch him in rings.

He's not Bogut  :-\.

Simmons had another double double yesterday. Apparently that's 11 already in only the 16 games he's played so far  :o. The 76ers have also won 7 of their last 10 thanks to him to be now 9-7.

A career night for @BenSimmons25 with 31 points, 18 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

And he might be joined by Le Bron at the 76ers  :o.

It's long but this is a good read about Aussie NBA basketballers (especially about Simmons) and how playing Aussie Rules as juniors has helped their hoops game in the big league in the States:

A first ever medal there for the taking with the USA knocked out and the Boomers cough up good leads in the final couple of games to end up empty handed. Bogut you can't blame the authorities who run Basketball worldwide for the team choking in the SF and 3rd place playoff. It's a missed opportunity.

Kobe Bryant tragically died in a helicopter crash this morning.

Bryant, 41, was one of five who were killed when the helicopter went down in Calabasas.

His daughter Gianna was also among those who died.

For those who follow the NBA how good has this playoff series been?

Some massive upsets. Today was brilliant.

I am rapt Jimmy Buckets is riding Miami all the way, but i also loved this from Giannis. If Dimma approached interviews like this the media would be all over him. Loved it.

He played crap. Injury doesnt make you miss easy shots as he did.

Hitting 10 of 23 from the stripe is a failure no matter which way it’s looked at

I did enjoy the fact he went after the media as well

What this episode proves is just how soft the world has become .. Shaq manned up and said it as it is , almost all the others (inc Charles Barkley) say they agree with him

On what planet is a number one seed being bounced in the first round not a failure???

If a team finishes on top of the AFL ladder and gets bounced in straight sets, it’s a failure and wasted opportunity

yep, I was discussing this with a mate yesterday who agreed with Giannis. I then said if hawks failed in those Gf would you still agree with them. No bloody way you would. All that effort and come away with nothing is a failure. They were top seeds, and were blown away by Buckets Dusty like performance especially the last 2 games.
