WITH Channels 7 and 10 increasingly likely to telecast all eight games each weekend in 2007, the networks are pencilling in their commentary teams.
Channel 10 general manager of sport David White yesterday said his network was going ahead with business in the belief that Foxtel would not be involved.
"Forget all the rubbish that's been spoken, I haven't heard from them (Foxtel) so they musn't be interested," White said.
"We've booked everything and are telecasting four games each weekend next year."
The channel's biggest recruit for its commentary team is likely to be retired Brisbane Lions captain Michael Voss, who will fill the experts' commentary chair vacated by Stephen Silvagni.
Voss, who has not yet signed a contract, heads a quality field for the role that includes Wayne Campbell, Alastair Lynch and Jarrod Molloy.
And Seven's Melbourne chief executive Ian Johnson yesterday confirmed that Dennis Cometti would join Bruce McAvaney to call Friday night games for the network.
"I'm delighted. I've worked with Bruce many times over the years and thoroughly enjoy calling with him," Cometti, 56, said from Perth last night.
"I will be dedicating my energies to Seven on Friday night and one other game (probably Sunday) because I've taken a step back in other areas. I'm not getting any younger."
Cometti's duties with Seven will also include the Beijing Olympics, where he's likely to call the swimming.
Johnson also confirmed Seven would produce a Monday night football program along the lines of Talking Footy.
Joining Cometti and McAvaney on their Melbourne calling team will be two of Brian Taylor, Clinton Grybas or Dwayne Russell.
"We are speaking to those three to find out what their radio commitments are. In Perth, Basil Zempilas will call and in Adelaide we have Chris Dittmar.
"We have been waiting for the agreement to be finalised so we can book OB (outside broadcast) vans. They need to be booked three months in advance."
As for the four days when Seven will have a clash between football and V8 Supercar commitments on Sundays, football will take precedence and the starting time of the motor racing will be changed.
In radio footy news, Rex Hunt, who is out of contract on New Year's Eve, met 3AW executives yesterday to discuss his long-term future.
Hunt is keen to continue calling football at 3AW after a successful 2006, but wants his football team from this season unchanged.
Does that mean he isn't keen on pairing up again with his old sparring partner and friend Sam Newman? "That's between management and I," Hunt said yesterday.
And Triple M has re-signed expert comments man Jason Dunstall.
New player SEN is believed to have spoken with axed Triple M caller Stephen Quartermain and Channel 10's Tim Lane regarding calling duties next year.
Quartermain's problem would be availability on Saturdays and Sundays given Channel 10 will require its callers to double up next year when they add Sundays to their schedule.
Anthony Hudson will call for SEN on Friday nights with Kevin Bartlett.
Nathan Buckley and James Hird are two names suggested for expert commentary when match duties allow, while ex-Triple M comments man Newman has been discussed.
Anthony Mithen, who recently departed the breakfast shift he co-hosted with Michael Christian at Sport 927, is another calling possibility.

Spud is doing special commentary for Fox Sports. Apparently his first game is the Dees vs Hawks this weekend.
Fox Sports has finalised their commentators with Clinton Grybas, Gerard Healy, Jason Dunstall and wikipedia's Dwayne Russell lol to head the coverage.
Fox Sports is opting for one play-by-play caller only, supported by two special comments callers.
Insiders suggest Fox Sports will use the pre-season coverage to test a number of new callers, including recently retired players Alastair Lynch, Glenn Jakovich, Rohan Smith and Leigh Colbert and former Richmond coach, Danny Frawley. Plus Liam Pickering, David Parkin, and Tony Shaw.

Did anyone else who saw the game tonight on tv think Bruce was flat in his calling and didn't have the usual enthusiasm even if it was just a NAB Cup game?
We turned the sound down and switched on SEN's call with Anthony Hudson and Dermie and they were pretty good.

3AW drops the ball with ratings

RADIO 3AW's long-standing dominance of football broadcasting is over after it took a belting in ratings released yesterday.
Figures yesterday revealed the ABC was the clear winner in three of the four football timeslots.
Triple M won the other timeslot, while 3AW -- No. 1 across the board this time last year -- had slipped to third in every slot.
Since the departure of Hutchison and Sam Newman from Triple M, the station has risen to seize No. 1 in the coveted Saturday market with its preview, call and review on the back of its 2007 team, fronted by Garry Lyon, James Brayshaw and Brian Taylor. The ABC and Triple M rate one-two across the board.
The new player in weekend football coverage, SEN, has had no impact, with a miniscule market share.

I listened to NIRS during the Dreamtime game as I had enough of 3AW. Real eye-opener. Took awhile to register what NIRS stood for. It wasn't until the ad where the guy asks his sister something about her Centrelink payments (true, not a lie) that I began to wonder and then you here this voice saying "National Indigenous Radio Station".

Richmond allways there or watching - so I do not remember last time I caught them on the radio.
Allways meant to try that trick of watching and listening to a radio broadcast, just never happened .

Same here CUB. If they are talking about the Tiges I'll listen. If not I'll switch to see what the others are on about. On the train to and from the 'G or Dome it depends on the reception on my dodgy old walkman. Siemens train = better AM reception while Comeng train = better FM reception ??? lol.

MELBOURNE'S leading radio station 3AW has reacted savagely to falling football ratings, sacking four key personalities.
On-air presenter and caller Craig Hutchison and executive producer of sport in Ralph Horowitz were informed today their services were no longer required.
It's believed Graeme Bond will be re-installed as producer of sport with Clinton Grybas to host pre-match on Saturday and Tony Leonard pre-match on Sunday.
Hutchison's role as a match caller on Saturday nights will be filled by Shane Healy.
The future of AW's Saturday morning lead-in program is also in doubt after falling ratings.

Garry Lyon is a filthy Urchin who thinks what that his opinion on the game is the only correct one and he has a habit of being offensive to those that disagree. Barely tolerated him on AW last year and now with Spud there I just do not want to listen to their faeces and drivel.
AW With Rexy is by far the best although if we are on SEN or 774 I don't mind.

BRIAN Taylor - Triple M's "Bristle Man" - is again the fans' overwhelming choice as best radio commentator.
The Herald Sun Footy Fans Survey saw Taylor attract 23 per cent of the vote, to be crowned most popular caller for the second year running.
The former Richmond and Collingwood full-forward has surged from being the favourite of just 7 per cent in 2005 to 9 per cent in 2006 and 17 per cent last year.
The rise and rise of "BT" has again left for dead his rivals, 3AW's Rex Hunt and ABC stalwart Tim Lane.
Hunt and Lane had finished in the top two every year since the survey began in 1997, until Taylor intervened for the first time last year.
Hunt was second with 14 per cent, a vast improvement on his shock all-time low of only 7 per cent last year.
But Lane has continued to slump, polling just 8 per cent this year, down from 12 per cent last year, 17 per cent in 2006 and 18 per cent in 2005.
In the realm of TV it is Dennis Cometti who has again blown away the opposition.
The Channel 7 caller attracted 42 per cent of the vote as the game's best TV commentator.
Cometti's nearest rival was station mate and new kid on the block Nathan Buckley, with 9 per cent.
The once peerless Bruce McAvaney was a distant fourth with 7 per cent of the TV vote.

RADIO station 3AW has fully recovered from the slump it suffered two years ago, claiming a resounding ratings win over rivals 774, Triple M and SEN in the latest Nielsen radio survey.
3AW (which is owned by Fairfax, publisher of The Age) won all pre-game slots, but came second to 774 for both Saturday games.
However, the talk station's most resounding win came in the post-game department.
On Friday nights, 18.8 per cent of listeners tuned in to 3AW, more than doubling Triple M (9.3) and easily accounting for SEN (4). Triple M could hold on to only a 2.3 per cent post-match audience share on Saturday nights, compared to 3AW's 18.8 per cent.
774 was particularly strong on Saturdays — narrowly eclipsing 3AW's calls in the afternoon (by 0.4 per cent) and night (1.5 per cent). 24-hour sports station SEN hovered around the 5 per cent mark on all slots except Saturday nights, where it dropped to 3.

REX Hunt is facing an uncertain future as radio station 3AW refuses to commit to its most high-profile caller and speculation mounts he may be ousted.
Station bosses said negotiations would start with Hunt after this year's AFL Grand Final.
But sources at Triple M said 3AW was attempting to poach its popular caller Brian Taylor.
Last night, Hunt said he would accept the station's decsion if he were axed.
"If the decision goes that way and Brian Taylor takes my place, 3AW will be in great hands," he said.
3AW general manager Shane Healy on Friday refused to say whether Hunt had a contract next year. Asked if Hunt was still wanted at the station, Mr Healy only said: "Oh yeah, I'd say so, yeah."
Ominously, he added: "We are looking at our ratings and our research, we are always interested to see how our audience is reacting to the team."
But he refused to speculate further, saying: "These stories have been around all season. Not just about Brian Taylor, but I've had a number of people talk to me about Anthony Hudson and Gerard Whateley -- you get a bit sick of it.
"All I've said to people all year, and it's a boring mantra . . . we will look at 2010 when 2009 finishes."
Triple M's football boss, Lee Simon, said: "Brian Taylor is a required member of the staff every day of the week."
In May, Hunt was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service after a road-rage attack on a cyclist.

REX Hunt's 21-year stint as a footy caller for 3AW could be over after a shock offer from rival Triple M.
Hunt confirmed he had been approached by Triple M to head its Saturday afternoon show next year.

His future at 3AW has been under a cloud since he was offered a significantly reduced salary - said to be down from $500,000 to $100,000 - to call on Sundays only.
Brian Taylor is expected to move from Triple M to 3AW to call Friday night and Saturday afternoon games.
Triple M's offer to Hunt is for next year only as the FM station attempts to groom either Hamish McLachlan or Luke Darcy as its top caller.
The Triple M deal is said to be similar to what Hunt would earn at 3AW next year.
Dubbed the "Bearded Burbler" for his madcap commentary, Hunt has developed a legion of fans over the years.
He flew back to Melbourne on Monday night after a week of fishing off Darwin and is expected to meet 3AW management on Tuesday.
"I have enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with 3AW, which has hopefully benefited both parties," Hunt said yesterday.
"And there have been times in the past year when I have considered retirement but I know I can still call, as evidenced by this year's grand final."
3AW general manager Shane Healy confirmed he would meet Hunt today.
"And Rex being a man of his word, I know he will give me an answer as to what he wants to do next season," Healy said.
Should Hunt join Triple M, it is believed he will call on Saturday afternoons alongside James Brayshaw, with McLachlan calling on Sundays and Darcy possibly on Friday nights.
Triple M general manager Ben Amarfio did not return calls yesterday.
The Hunt offer is a bid to lift Triple M ratings, which were poor this year.
Some commentators were surprised the station hasn't offered the role to breakfast host Eddie McGuire, though he already has a workload of five mornings and five evenings a week.
McGuire has never made any secret of his love for calling and spent this year with SEN. The unknown players in footy commentary at this stage are retired champions Matthew Richardson and Matthew Lloyd.
Both are likely to be on the airwaves next season, with 3AW and SEN the leading suitors. The ABC, which led the ratings this year, is likely to continue using current players as irregular panellists.

FOOTBALL'S radio merry-go-round continued last night when Tim Lane, one of Australia's most respected sporting broadcasters, quit the ABC after more than 30 years, to join 3AW.
Lane has signed on with 3AW to call football each Sunday until the end of 2011, the duration of the current AFL broadcast agreement. He will call the 2010 grand final with the station's other big-name recruit, Brian Taylor.
Lane's decision to quit 774 ABC, where he has worked as a contracted caller for five years after joining Channel Ten in 2003, follows Taylor's move from Triple M to head up 3AW's football team, replacing Rex Hunt.
Hunt signed a one-year deal with Triple M earlier this week.
3AW's general manager Shane Healy last night described Lane's recruitment as a coup for the station. ''He brings enormous credibility to 3AW football,'' he told The Age. ''One of football's most respected commentators and callers has now joined the best football commentary team in the business and we are delighted.
''Tim has long been regarded as a doyen of football, cricket, Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games and he is someone any football broadcast would be thrilled to have on their team.''
Lane, a columnist with The Age and The Sunday Age, will call football on 3AW each Sunday with Tony Leonard. He will also work as a commentator with morning host Neil Mitchell outside the football season.
Hunt's move to Triple M raised industry eyebrows, given the widely held view that experienced caller Eddie McGuire would expand his new role at the station to include football. But Hunt is expected to vacate the position after a season, making way for former Western Bulldog Luke Darcy.

MICK Malthouse has signed with Channel 7 as a new era dawns in football broadcasting.
Seven unveiled a star-studded stable of expert commentators for next season headed by recruits Brian Taylor, Luke Darcy, Cameron Ling, Brett Kirk and Malthouse.
Taylor has defected from Foxtel, while Darcy crosses from Channel 10, which lost the broadcast rights in this year's $1.25 billion race.
And in coming weeks Channel 9's Eddie McGuire is tipped to become the face of Foxtel's AFL coverage.
Seven will broadcast wall-to-wall footy next season on Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
The station's new signings will join Leigh Matthews, Bruce McAvaney, Dennis Cometti, Tim Watson, Matthew Richardson, Tom Harley, Nick Riewoldt and Luke Hodge on a rotating roster.
Perth-based Basil Zemplis and AFL Game Day host Hamish McLachlan will also call matches next year in expanded roles.
Former Swans captain Kirk is the shock appointment, but was considered popular with players and the female demographic.
He got the nod ahead of former Bomber Matthew Lloyd, who has instead joined Nine.
Seven is also planning a new Saturday night panel show similar to Ten's Before the Game.
"This is the start of a new era for AFL on Seven," Melbourne station chief Lewis Martin said.
"We reckon we've got the best AFL commentary team in the business, some giants of the game, and these new additions only make us stronger.
"They're astute, passionate, connected to the game, and they'll give viewers an insight into the footy they won't find anywhere else."
Former Magpie coach Malthouse has signed on for one season, leaving open the option of returning to AFL coaching in 2013.
"I can't wait to get started, to be honest," Malthouse said.
"I understand why teams win and lose, I'm clinical in analysing the game, but now I'll get to do it without worrying about the result.
"And in many respects I'll have a clearer view because I'll be impartial."
Fox will broadcast the remaining five weekly home-and-away fixtures as well as simulcasts of Seven's four matches. It will also reactivate its 24-hour footy channel next year.

BIG NAME recruits Mick Malthouse and Brian Taylor will spearhead Channel Seven's Saturday football coverage as the network doubles the number of games it telecasts each weekend.
Malthouse, whose 664-game coaching career - the second longest in League history - came to a close on Grand Final day last year, will feature as a specialist commentator on Seven's Saturday afternoon coverage.
Taylor, who crosses from Fox Sports, will be the front man for Seven on Saturday nights, which will include a one-hour pre-game show heading into the live coverage of the Saturday evening clash.
Seven unveiled its commentary teams for 2012 at an event in Melbourne on Thursday.
The long-standing Friday night football team will remain intact, with Bruce McAvaney and Dennis Cometti as the commentators, Leigh Matthews and Tom Harley offering special comments and Tim Watson and Matthew Richardson as the boundary reporters.
Hamish McLachlan and Basil Zempilas will call the Saturday afternoon matches, with Malthouse and Harley offering special comments and former Sydney Swans captain Brett Kirk as the boundary rider, or as Seven prefers to call it, the field commentator.
Taylor will be the sole commentator on Saturday nights, with Luke Darcy and Matthew Richardson doing special comments and just-retired Geelong premiership skipper Cameron Ling on the boundary.
As per the last few years, McAvaney and Cometti will share the call on Sundays, with Watson offering comments and either Ling or Kirk on the boundary.

I'm hoping with a new tv deal Ch 7 totally rejig their coverage and liven it up as last year it was flat and dull :sleep. Too many of their commentators lack any colour and personality in their voice when calling a game while others including sadly Bruce these days seem to be just going through the motions and have lost that spontaneous excitement they once had in their calling when there was a crucial goal, mark or play. It is also takes away from the match atmosphere that they now turn the crowd fader right down so you hardly hear the reaction of the crowd.

The first full Melbourne radio ratings survey for 2012 reveals steep drops in radio football audiences compared to 2011.
Saturday nights have suffered the biggest drop, with total listeners tumbling from 284,000 to 213,000 (down 25 per cent). Sunday afternoons dived from 637,000 to 520,000 (down 18 per cent).
As part of the AFL's new TV deal, all those games are now live on TV and for the more technologically savvy, also available on tablets and smartphones. The impatient fans that last year preferred live radio to delayed telecasts of even as little as half an hour (as was the case on Saturday nights) have started to abandon the radio.
Figures for 2011 obtained by AFL.com.au indicate that 40.5 per cent of radio listeners during the football timeslots - 6pm to 11pm Friday, 12 noon until 11pm Saturday and 12 noon to 6pm Sundays - were tuning in to the football. So far in 2012, that figure has dropped to 34.5 per cent.
In terms of cumulative audiences, the Friday night audience has dropped only slightly, from 428,000 to 424,000. Saturday afternoons are down a bit from 661,000 to 634,000.

I think the only rare times I've listened to a game on radio this year was when a Richmond game was on Foxtel only. In the 90s I use to listen to Rex almost all the time. Now radio is more for pre-game and post-game after a win so no surprise the ratings have fallen away.

Wayne Carey has emerged as favourite to claim two high-profile broadcasting roles next season.
It's understood Carey has been locked in serious negotiations with host television networks Channel Seven and Fox Footy. This would involve Carey providing special comments on Seven's Friday night coverage, where he could replace former Geelong premiership captain Tom Harley, while he would also replace Paul Roos on Fox Footy's iconic Monday night review show, On the Couch.

Wayne Carey confirmed for Seven's Friday night footy. Carey will not be involved in the play-by-play calling but will be used during the match preview, at quarter-time, half-time and three quarter-time and in the post-match show. He will join a Friday night team already featuring Bruce McAvaney, Dennis Cometti, Leigh Matthews, Tom Harley and Matthew Richardson.
Campbell Brown has joined MMM replacing Nathan Brown in a special comments role.
Nathan Brown will switch to 3AW where he will be a play-by-play commentator.
Michael Voss has joined SEN replacing the retired Robert Walls.

Commentator Brian Taylor has been told his services at 3AW are no longer required after five years as the station's chief football caller.
There is speculation he could return to Triple M next season and will remain the lead commentator on Saturday night football.

It’s hard to keep up with the play, but Page 13 hears CRAIG HUTCHISON has emerged a winner with his radio and distribution company Crocmedia being handballed the rights from the AFL to sub-license the coverage of matches across Australia.
AM stations like SEN, 3AW and ABC learned about the radical, unprecedented shake-up a few days ago, with an announcement looming.
The AFL has refused to comment on the radio negotiations, which come with certain provisos of reach to regional and metropolitan markets Australia-wide guaranteeing the ABC as the game’s national broadcaster.

The Herald Sun revealed last month that the relationship between Hutchison and Bartlett had been fractured by the decision to punt the Richmond legend from his morning slot at the start of the year

I just listen to the station which has our game. If more than one has it , Ill listen to the station that has the most haters coz you can tell their choking on there own coco pops having to call Richmond win again.
The old halcyon days of rex calling the footy wont return. Also miss The Geoff Wilson National Anthem and Rex wanting to sing an all time classic "Every time I ride my bike and I look at you I get a flat"
The 8th at Bemm River just after the footy was also great with such legendary horses as "love on the bonnet" and Brother Nelson racing. Brother Nelson never ran well.

Tom Browne has resigned from Channel 7, it has been confirmed by his new employer.
The Herald Sun first reported the high profile journalist has accepted a position outside the footy industry and will also be leaving Melbourne.
The Herald Sun reports Browne is expected to continue in his role with Seven through to the end of the 2023 AFL season before taking up a position with MA Financial Group.
Triple M has also confirmed Browne will continue in his role with the popular radio broadcaster for the remainder of the 2023 AFL season.
