Face Off - Buddy v Bling
« on: November 17, 2009, 09:05:17 AM »
An topic which was clear cut a year a go but now the answer is not so obvious -

who will be remembered as the best player from the 2004 draft in your opinion?

and a follow up question...

in what order who you rank them?

Tambling has done nothing to suggest he is worth his pick. A few good games hardly proves anything

Frankling kicked 100 goals and has a flag next to his name and more importantly is a match winner

He is the pick of the bunch and will always rate 1

What's your order then daniel? Obviously Buddy is first but who follows?

Obviously Griffen is missing from the above list...but what about the kid that was picked up at #24 that year...has got over 400 possessions the past 3 years...

Having said all that, it is purely subjective...what is meant by best from the draft...best midfielder..best fwd...best defender...It is too early to tell who will be the best player...was Richo the best player from his draft?

The gap is closing between buddy and tambling. Richie is every chance to step up to elite midfielder status next year.
My rankings would be:
Frankiln
Deledio
Roughead
Tambling
Lewis
Detka! Detka! Detka!

At this moment in time its not even a close contest.

Buddy is a genuine AFL superstar.....one of the top 10 players of the competition.
Tambling would struggle to break into the AFLs top 150 players.

I would suggest that it would be difficult to shine  in a poorly coached, poorly developed side.Lids and Bling have had to do it the hard way thats for sure.

Tambling started to show some really good signs last year (played 3 months of solid footy) and Im very excited to see how he develops under Hardwick next season.

1.....Franklin
2.....daylight
3.....Lids
4.....Roughhead
5.....Lewis/Griffen/Tambling

We keep waiting for Deledio to have a real impact on the competition....Big Lance has been doing so since 2007.

Disagree in part Mat.  Franklin has had 1 great season in a premiership winning team - he needs to have a lot more before he earns the tag "champion".  Franklin showed how 'mortal' he is in an average side last year - compare that to Richo who was a champion player in terrible sides for his whole 18 year career.  I could name you 20+ current players better than Franklin - you might find time and turning tides balance the comparison between Buddy, Lids and Bling over time.

I would argue that Lids is better than Buddy. Buddy is all show. He can do the spectacular but goes missing far too often. Buddy also has terrible days where he kicks 10.1 whereas Lids is growing is consistency daily. Lids is a quality midfielder who, I believe will become a star if he is surrounded by supporting talent.

Buddy proved that he was mortal this year when his supply dried up once everyone figured out the Hawk's zone and their midfield dropped off. Whereas Lids has had no support and had to do it alone from day one. It has to be hard to be the number one midfielder in the team from 18 years of age!

Bling had the better of the contest this year and I believe from here on end. Buddy will no longer receive the assistance he once did or get the luxury of quick turn over leaving him in space. I think his attitude will also begin to impact on his on field performance.

So for mine in 2009 the ranking will be -

1. Lids
2. Franklin
3. Roughhead
4. Tambling
5.Lewis

In 2015...

1.Bling
2. Lids
3. Roughhead
4. Lewis
5. Buddy

Buddy had an ordinary year by his standards but 67 goals was still a decent return. Forwards who average 3 goals per game are still doing their job. It was only one less than Cry Baby St Nick. Roughead kicked 51 as well. Both would still be ahead of our boys as much as I like Lids and Blingers.

In any case the least of our problems are Lids and Blingers or that we chose them in the 2004 draft. It's the fact we have an ordinary list apart from a handful of others to go with them. Footy is a team sport. We had a superior "Buddy" in Richo for 17 years and went nowhere because our list in all that time was crap around him. Just as the Hawks flopped this year due to injuries, drops in form, and inferior players, despite Buddy and Roughy still being up forward.

Despite the mistakes with some picks if we had walked away from every draft over the past 10 years with the likes of Lids, Blingers, Morton, McGuane and Thursty then we wouldn't now have the worst team and list in the AFL.

Btw the Crows didn't do to badly after stuffing up their first pick - Van Berlo at 24, Maric at 40 and Chris Knights at 56.

Buddys 67 goals this year is equal to Matthew Richardsons second best ever season (goal wise)

Not bad for a player who had an "ordinary year by his standards".
