That's a wrap: Every club's Trade Period ranked from best to worst

Sarah Black
womens.afl
8 June 2021

RICHMOND

Recruits: Jess Hosking (Carlton), Poppy Kelly (St Kilda), Maddie Shevlin (Collingwood)

Out: Sabrina Frederick (Collingwood), Alice Edmonds, Emily Harley, Luka Lesosky-Hay, Akec Makur Chuot, Phoebe Monahan, Cleo Saxon-Jones, Holly Whitford, Alana Woodward (all delisted)

Current draft picks: 5, 16, 55, 57

The Tigers pulled the surprise of the Trade Period, signing Jess Hosking in the dying stages of the 10-day stint. Having delisted Edmonds and traded Frederick, Kelly was needed to shore up the ruck stocks. Nailing those first two draft picks will be the key for Richmond this period. They have committed to re-drafting Makur Chuot.

Trade rating: 7/10

Good why?

Because she had a twin sister already at the club?

She is no Prespakis or Harrington and she  only average 11 disposals a game

No because she a good player, tough in the clinches and can play a lockdown role through the midfield. Which is something we need.

You want a Prespakis & Harrington be prepared to give up a McKenzie or Conti and I don't think anyone would do that
No I didn’t say I wanted Prespakis & Harrington because that’s unrealistic but I’m not getting overly excited that said her best game was probably her game against us.
Maybe they’ll both improve once they play together again we certainly need more mids that can help Conti and McKenzie.
Let’s hope we pick up another couple of guns like McKenzie this draft.

Former junior Australian basketball captain Jasmine Simmons shoots for the AFLW.

It's believed three clubs are vying for the signature of the junior world champion captain including the Adelaide Crows, North Melbourne and the Richmond Tigers.

Starting to take some shape and look like a more competitive team.

I’m still not convinced on some players though ie. Sansonetti but I’m glad we finally moved on Fredricks.

Still some work to do as some are just not up to it now but we will soon find out about them all when the season starts. The better the competition gets the better the players must be.

Hopefully we hit the jackpot in the draft with more McKenzie and Conti types.

The AFLW Sign and Trade Period has now come to a close, with Richmond welcoming three exciting Tigers and 22 players signing on for 2022.

Bookended by the very first and last trades, it was a busy start and finish to the Period for Richmond.

The Tigers' first recruit was Maddie Shevlin on day one, as the utility crossed over from Collingwood in a trade that saw Sabrina Frederick depart the Club.

Head of Women’s Football Kate Sheahan said gaining Shevlin filled Richmond’s need for a rebounding defender.

"She was quite a sought-after prospect in the industry because everyone could see there was a skillful, athletic, beautiful user of the ball sitting on Collingwood’s list and due to their strength down back, it was really hard for her to break in," Sheahan said.

"The opportunity to get game time at our Club and really play a significant role in our backline, and a role she can really make her own, was the thing at the end of the day that got her over the line."

Next to join Richmond was ruck Poppy Kelly, who came across from St Kilda where she was an inaugural AFLW player.

Sheahan said the "sky’s the limit" for the athletic youngster.

"Poppy’s incredibly raw...We just really thought to ourselves 'wow this girl’s got a lot of upside'," Sheahan said.

"She’s new to the game but athletically very gifted, tall, with pretty good ruck craft for someone who hasn’t played a lot of football.

"For us, what stood out when we really analysed her game was her ability to compete in the contest aerially when we were in a situation where we needed that option long down the line."

On the final day, and minutes, of the Sign and Trade period, Jess Hosking became a Tiger.

After what could only be described as a "whirlwind 24 hours", Sheahan was "incredibly thrilled" when the trade with Carlton went through.

"It went down to the wire," Sheahan said.

"We think this is an amazing acquisition for our backline, but Jess has the capacity to play in multiple roles. We’ve seen with Carlton this year that she was really good inside for them when she would rotate through the midfield, and she played a fair bit of midfield as well, and has been a staple in their backline over the years.

"(It provides) a lot of variety for Jess, and our team overall, which just continues to add to the depth of our 30."

Sheahan said the commitment from the 22 Tigers who have re-signed with the Club showed "really terrific connection and team awareness".

"We're thrilled to be able to retain the talent at the footy club and extend some of our girls who were inaugural AFLW players for our team," Sheahan said.

"There's a lot to look forward to for the AFLW Tiger girls."

The Tigers now turn their attention towards next month’s AFLW draft, where they will look to build on their youth with a strong hand of picks 5, 16, 55 and 57.

"It’s a fantastic opportunity for us," said Sheahan.

"Pick five nationally (is) pick three in Victoria, so we’ll have the third-best (Victorian) pick in the draft.

"Our recruiter Trent Mosbey has done a power of work in identifying the best young talent in Victoria and around the country. We’re really scouring the draft at the moment to find what we want and what’s available."

DESPITE missing out on finals, Richmond leads the way in Champion Data's 2021 AFLW All-Star stats team.

Selection is based on pre-determined statistical categories for those positions (spoils for defence, uncontested possessions for midfield etc), with the leader in each category given the nod.

The Tigers had four players selected: key back Harriet Cordner, midfielder Monique Conti and key forwards Katie Brennan and Courtney Wakefield.

DEFENDERS

Harriet Cordner, Richmond – intercept marks

The recruitment of Cordner was an inspired move by Richmond during the 2020 Trade Period, the key back producing her best season to date. Tied with Schleicher for most intercept marks (2.6) and ranked sixth-best for one-on-one contest loss rate (minimum 15).

FORWARDS

Katie Brennan, Richmond – score involvements

Spending much more time in attack than she did last year, the Tiger ranked second overall for score involvements (4.8) behind Phillips. Brennan ranked first overall for contested marks inside 50, and finished equal-second in the goalkicking with 14, way up on her previous AFLW best of six.

INTERCHANGE

Monique Conti, Richmond – ground-ball gets

The Tiger set the record for the highest average of groundball gets in a season with 10.6. She also ranked second for contested possessions and seventh for both disposals and clearances.

Courtney Wakefield, Richmond – forward 50 tackles

Usually the domain of smalls, Richmond's 180cm, 34-year-old full-forward sat equal-first for forward 50 tackles. Also tying for first were Rachelle Martin and Christina Bernardi, but Wakefield gets the nod on number of games played (nine, as oppose to five and six respectively). The Tiger also ranked third for pressure points inside forward 50.

They forgot to mention that Wakefield travels over 600 miles in the desert heat and bare foot over the snowy ranges just to get to training.  :rollin

Seven AFLW Tigers have shown their commitment to the Club by signing multi-year deals.

Star Richmond AFLW players Ellie McKenzie, Katie Brennan and Monique Conti have underlined their commitment to the Club by signing on for the next two seasons in Yellow and Black.

The All-Australian pair and boom youngster McKenzie formed the top-three in the Tigers’ best and fairest this year, and have bolstered the group by committing for the maximum contract terms under current AFLW rules.

Rapidly improving talls Bec Miller and Gabby Seymour have also signed with the Club until the end of the 2023 season, as has dynamic winger Tessa Lavey.

After impressing in an expanded role through the midfield this season, former No. 15 draft pick Maddy Brancatisano is also on board for the longer term.

Sarah Black's first round AFLW phantom draft:

1. GC - Charlie Rowbottom
2. Geel - George Prespakis
3. WC - Courtney Rowley
4. StK - Tess Craven

5. Rich - Amanda Ling

Pos: Midfielder
Ht: 163cm
DOB: 9/7/02
From: Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

Video highlights: https://womens.afl/video/72918/likely-no-1-pick-ready-to-take-her-game-to-the-next-level

Ling has shot up the ranks after being overlooked in last year's draft. Now with some consistent footy under her belt after missing 2019 with a hamstring injury, Ling is a dogged ball-winner who loves tackling and putting on defensive pressure. Won the best on ground in this year's NAB League Grand Final and is incredibly driven.

If not her?
Ling and Tess Craven could be interchangeable here, with a bit of confusion as to which order the two will go. There's no chance Georgie Prespakis slips this far.

6. GC - Tegan Levi
7. Geel - Ella Friend
8. GC - Giselle Davies
9. Geel - Stella Reid
10. Carl - Tara Slender
11. Carl - Annie Lee
12. StK - Ashleigh Richards
13. NM - Emelia Yassir
14. Freo - Charlotte Thomas
15. Geel - Poppy Schaap

16. Rich - Aurora Smith

Pos: Winger
Ht: 165cm
DOB: 13/12/03
From: Murray Bushrangers/Vic Country

Video highlights: https://womens.afl/video/72996/likely-no-1-pick-ready-to-take-her-game-to-the-next-level

A bit more of a speculative selection from womens.afl's end, looking at needs. Smith would add some quality pace on the wing. She's got great endurance and excellent game sense, knowing just where to position herself at the right moment. From Shepparton, Smith won the Bushrangers' best and fairest this year.
