Payback time with Ratten under pressure?!
Blues must lift for Brett Ratten
Jon Ralph
Herald Sun
November 26, 2010
CARLTON chief executive Greg Swann says it might take "significant" improvement from the Blues list next year for coach Brett Ratten to keep his job.
The club's board has deciding against extending Ratten's contract past next year, with some members clearly impatient for immediate improvement.
Swann admits the spectre of Mick Malthouse hangs over Ratten, with Paul Roos another high-profile coach consistently linked to the Blues.
But he says he is hopeful Ratten extracts another year of progress from his young side, which would see the former captain's contract extended.
Given a good run with injuries, that might take a top-four finish despite consecutive top-eight finishes in the past two seasons.
Even a lightning start would not see the club's hard-line position budge.
"I have spoken to Ratts about that already. There are eight or nine coaches that come out next year, so it's going to be a bit of a feast, depending on how you start," Swann said.
"But I think our position is pretty clear - we will let the season run whether we are 0-10 or 10-0, and have a look at it at the end of the year."
Asked specifically on 3AW what Ratten had to do to avoid the chop, he set lofty goals.
"We have a whole lot of criteria there ... it's fair to say we have to keep improving and maybe to a significant degree."
Former Pies chief executive Swann knows supporters will connect the dots if the Blues do not start well.
"That speculation is there. I am pretty sure he's going to stay where he is and he signed a contract," he said.
The scene is already set for a rollocking Round 1 encounter with Richmond after Tigers president Gary March yesterday questioned Carlton's financial result.
The Blues this week posted a $2,264,444 operating profit, but their annual financial report shows government and AFL grants worth $2,389,131.
"Interestingly in their financial results they trumpeted a $2.2m profit when actually after stripping out government grants they made an operating loss of $125,000.
"So it will be even sweeter when we smash them Round 1," March said on a blog on Richmond's website.

It'll be nice if we get a win build up confidence right from round 1. Playing them in the pre-season cup will also help.
Im not expecting a win but Im hopeful we do beat them :)
:gotigers
-
I'm sick of losing to the Blues in the first game of the year :banghead I'm expecting another tough up but if we somehow turn the table on them this year I would be thrilled! :cheers :santa :gotigers
-
I don't expect Ratten to coach the blues beyond 2011, decision was made some time ago about this I'm lead to believe, dead man walking like knights was, the difference being the blues will let him coach out his contract.
-
God i hope we smash them

Not if he's 0-11
-
but they will if he's 11-0. Gee its pretty tough if you take your club into finals 2 years in a row and look like a third and you get the arse.
A good part of it is recruiting anyway.

Wont make any difference. What will make a difference is where they are at after round 22 and how they peform in finals if they make it. Blues bosses want to see "real" progress and I can't see it.
-
They will be on the hunt for a big name coach such as Roos, Bomber and in particular Malthouse for their next coach. As much as I despise the Blues, just to see the faces of the Colliwobble fans face if that occured would be priceless...then of course I want them both to fail misably... :whistle Well I can dream can't I?! :sleep :pray
-
A poor start to the year will have the (media) wolves at Ratten and Carlton's door which will just keep pumping up and up the pressure on the club as we all know. If we could cause an upset (I don't think we will sadly :-\ ) then the Blues could end up 0-3 with their next games against GC in their first game (Suns will be pumped for it) and the Pies. It could even be 0-4 as Essendon is their bogey side. We can dream can't we ;D.
1 Richmond
2 Gold Coast @ Gabba
3 Collingwood
4 Essendon
5 Adelaide @ Etihad
6 Sydney @ SCG
7 St. Kilda @ Etihad
8 Bye
9 Geelong @ Etihad
10 Melbourne
-
UnFortunately with that draw they will be 4w 1l after 5 rounds
-
Despite what Mick saysin the media about his contract with Eddie, there are some rumblings about a reunion between swann and malthouse at Carlton.
Ratten will need a top 4 season to have any hope.
-
We will win this game and by a big margin!!!

We are due, we are better, we have a better line up, we have more confidence, we will win....We cannot keep losing to this mob that I have never rated and still dont. We went into our shells for the last 2 years against this rabble...Not next year. :thumbsup

I want to win as much as anyone but massive predictions of how we good are can come back and bite ya

;D, Well WP, the grass is very green here, but no I am not. We should have a fit Cotch, Foley, Martin, Lids, etc.. Really I will be going into this game very confident, more than ever against the pretenders, honestly, we have a good game plan, we have all seen that...I dont think the Blues will do much next year......we will start that rot... :thumbsup
-
Oh and another reason we will win, my mate has just arrived here to work and yep you guessed it he supports the Blues. I have had to listen to his crap for too long so we are due....One good thing though, I have brain washed his 5 year old to follow the Tigers and my mate is well..........lets just say...NOT HAPPY JAN!! :rollin

Lachlan Henderson out for 2 months due to hip surgery.

At best you would think he'll be underdone for round 1.

I dont get it....Why is Ratten under pressure ?
If Hardwick takes Richmond to the finals two years in a row,(which has not happened in 35 years) Im sure there would be a gold statue made in his honour.
-
There was half a gold Danny Frawley statue on eBay recently...
-
absolutely we should aim to win this.
We couldnt beat them minus Judd now lets try beat them with him.
Honestly i dont rate the Blues so cant understand how some think we cant win.
yes every year we get let down but if we are all about changing our culture then we should smash these idiots.

As long as the club internally is quietly confident then that is a positive and stands us in good stead.
We could fall under the radar this year and win a few games we were not expected to win.
Yes there is a long way to go but beating Carlton is not impossible and if anything should be a
prerequisite and criteria that should be met every time we play this filth not just because of the
lopsided results in the last two years.
I believe we can win. If anything the pre season comp I expect Dimma to try a few things without
revealing his total hand. One point in round 1 is enough. For me any game against Carlscumcheatstealfilth is something I always look forward to. Every win against them is savoured.

CARLTON'S pre-season campaign is in tatters, with a host of stars sidelined by injury or in rehabilitation recovering from ailments.
Eight of the club's best 22 were missing from yesterday's session at Visy Park.
Only 28 fit players took to the park as the club prepared for its first NAB Cup hit-out against Richmond on February 12.
Father-to-be and captain Chris Judd is in danger of missing the NAB Cup as he battles a bruised heel and quadricep complaint. The Brownlow medallist was restricted to straight-line running and stationary kicking yesterday. "He's had a limited pre-season, but he is back running really well," teammate Jordan Russell said. "He is probably a week away from resuming skills with the main group."
Ruckman Shaun Hampson is still suffering from tendinitis in his right knee. Club insiders told the Sunday Herald Sun Hampson aggravated the complaint while running on a treadmill at his model girlfriend Megan Gale's Sydney home. Hampson trained with strapping around his right knee while running alongside Judd.
Midfield pair Bryce Gibbs and Brock McLean have both been hit with a gastro bug. They ran laps along with Ryan Houlihan, who is sidelined with a cork.
Talented young ruckman Matthew Kreuzer continues to improve following a setback after knee surgery. The man mountain has tendinitis in the same knee that required a reconstruction. "Before Christmas he had a setback, but if anyone is going to come back and be ready for Round 1, it's going to be Kreuzer," said Russell, who is sporting a new title as part of the club's leadership group.

The more injuries they get the less chance i give us.
They smashed us without Judd.
We just need to believe we can win this and we will. I cant see how we go into this game thinking we cant. They are f.uckin poo if u ask me

I HATE Carlton. We MUST win round 1. It's crucial!!
-
I want to beat Carlton as much as anyone however the facts are
1) Carlton have made the finals two years in a row.
2) We have finished 15th two years in a row.
Carlton beat Geelong and St kilda last year.We have not beaten a top 4 team in 2 years.

you know what Matt if the players think that then yeah we are beaten already. I dont buy it that they are a good team.
I dont give a rats who they beat. They just match up well against those sides bit like us vrs the Hawks.
Carazzo, Scotland, Henderson, Skills Houlihan(dud), Hampson, Yarran, Armfield etc etc all average players who can be beaten easily
They have 1 A Grader in Judd. 5 or so B graders in Gibbs, Murphy and Simpson(Just), Kruzer, Betts. The rest are no better than some of ours.
We dont get beaten by Carlton Round 1 we get beaten by the scene. The big crowd, The big build up. Thats what does it to us and it must change.
Its no coinsidence the only win we have had in Round 1 was Judd's first game. We were hardly mentioned in the months prior. All the focus, all the Cameras were following the Blues for 3 months prior to that game.
We can beat these suckers, we just have to go out there believing it and we will win.
-
If Gibbs, Murphy, Kruz etc played for us we'd be calling them A graders. Some people on forums think Jackson and McGuane are A graders. :help
-
If Gibbs, Murphy, Kruz ect played for us we'd be calling them A graders. Some people on forums think Jackson and McGuane are A graders. :help
Murphy is class but we have him covered if we perform. Simpson is a joke. He would be a dud in our team.
IMO we have 1 A grader thats Jack. Lids & Martin B grade. Cotch and Foley(if he gets back) are B-, Newman maybe. Thats our top 5
Anyone who thinks those 2 you said are anything apart from D then they need to get off the disco biscuits.
-
Simpson is underrated and an important player for the Blues off a half-back flank or wing. He might be just a B-grader but he is consistent and has clean skills to hit targets. He probably flies under the radar because he played in those crap Carlton teams that 'won' 3 spoons.
After being flogged everytime we've played Carlton over the past 2 years I would hope our first aim is to at least be competitive against this mob and not embarrass ourselves and the Club on the primetime round 1 stage again. If we want to kept this so called "blockbuster" opening game spot we can't afford to cough up 5 goals to zip in the first 15 minutes and be on the end of another one-way thrashing again as we were in 2009 and 2010 :banghead.

Carlton beat Geelong and St kilda last year.We have not beaten a top 4 team in 2 years.
they beat those two in the first 7 rounds of the season. they did not beat an eventual top 8 side for the rest of the yr.
if i remember correctly at the half way mark they were 7 and 4.and eyeing of a top 4 berth.
the only teams they beat after rnd 11 were bris 13th ess 14th rich 15th and wce 16th. they copped some hidings from the good teams and beat up on the weaker teams.i dont recall them having a lot of serious injuries to important players other than kruezer. this poor effort against top 8 sides and just 4 wins from their final 11 is what has me question them.

That's certainly an enlightening set of results. Paints the Scum in a fairly different light in some ways and gives me hope that they will truly crash this year.

-
I know he might not be ready, but i'd like to see Derickx take the opening bounce in round 1 and batter into Hampson.
I can see the Blues coming out and trying to throw some weight around. They did it in the NAB1 match, Nason was crunched and every time there was a pack the Carlton players made sure they shoved our guys down as they got to their feet.

Just 3 weeks exactly to round 1 :thumbsup

AFL holds key to live season opener, sys Channel 10
Michael Warner
Herald Sun
March 04, 2011
THE AFL, not Channel 10, will decide whether the season-opening Richmond-Carlton blockbuster at the MCG is aired live.
Ten's head of football, David Barham, said yesterday the network was restricted from showing against-the-gate broadcasts of Melbourne matches under the terms of the league's TV rights contract.
The rule does not apply to Ten's broadcast partner, Channel 7, on Friday nights.
"If the AFL will let us go live, we will go live," Barham told SEN of the March 24 showdown.
"They know we want to go live. (But) we can only go live . . . with Carlton-Richmond if the AFL says it's OK.
"It's in our contract - we can only go live when the AFL lets us."
The AFL, which has been ramping up the pressure on its broadcasters to go live in recent months, yesterday confirmed the arrangement.
"The AFL's contract with Channel 10 doesn't allow for live telecasts, without approval, as that was the agreement that was signed back in 2005 for this rights period," league spokesman Patrick Keane said.
"The process has been that we have a discussion with both Ten and the clubs playing in the match to talk about a live telecast when it is shaping as a high-capacity game. This usually happens in the week leading up to the game.
This will be on our agenda for Richmond versus Carlton as we build up to round 1, and I would expect any decision on live coverage would be made in the 7-10 days before the game is played."
AFL boss Andrew Demetriou has made no secret of his anger at Seven's decision not to go live in recent seasons.
The station has preferred a one-hour delay in favour of the top-rating Better Homes & Gardens.
Demetriou said in November: "I don't think people want replays or delays . . . hopefully Channel 7 will get into the 21st century."
The AFL is eyeing a payday of more than $1 billion for the next round of rights, expected to be sold before the season's launch - up from $780 million under the existing deal.

GC will treat their first game as a final to make a good first impression on the competition. New sides have normally had a good first game so if the Blues underestimate them then they'll get their pants pulled down.
As for Jamison missing hopefully that forced Ratten into some makeshift moves such as playing Setanta lol or the newbie Watson on Jack and forcing Waite to playing in defence without being able to run forward. Waite has killed us off a wing/HB in every game since the centenary game in 2008 :scream.

Carlton fans seem to think Round 1 is a done deal, so we can live in hope of a priceless reaction on their part if we win. Realistically though, just for once it'd be nice to go home from the Round 1 game without wanting to leave my membership card there!

couldnt agree more.
yeah yeah rebuilding this rebuilding that.
Facts are a first up win against these pricks would boost the fighting fund in big numbers and it would be nice to feel what we felt the year we smashed them in Judd's first game.
We should be going into this game full of confidence and i realistically give us a good showing as long as we can maintain Betts and that hack Scotland who thinks he is an A grader every time he plays us

I would say it's not a big loss, but he did destroy us in round 1 last year.

One player from Carlton who poos me is Robinson or whatever his name is. That prick always gets of the leash and kicks a couple of goals. Id play Jacko on him, we cant afford to have hacks like him kicking goals against us.

Yep that will equate to one flag in 86 seasons for the Blues.
At least John Elliott got it right about them that they were a sad pathetic footy club and now they want to emulate them. :rollin :lol :rollin

TAB Sportsbet odds - Round 1
Richmond $3.05
Carlton $1.35
The bookies are giving us no chance.
-
Listen to them.
They know what they're talking about.
-
Yep. Il be putting some good coin on the Blues to win
Do it every year if we lose at least I get something back to numb the pain
-
You should probably also have something on the scum at 39.5+ on the night. Better odds and what I saw against Adelaide, its a big possibility r1 could be another blowout.
-
You must be pretty crapola at betting to resort to backing against your own football club!
Geez, betting at $1:30 - great odds must feel like a Charlie Sheen winner!!!
-
I don't bet often but did the same in the GF with the pies.
Nothing wrong with betting against your own club at all
Better than fools like you who actually think we got a chance against the likes of Collingwood, Carlton etc etc
-
Why stop at betting on round 1.
You can get a very juicy $8 for Richmond winning the wooden spoon.
Let us rejoice with every humiliating loss. Theres good coin to be made.

I just don't think its worth backing anything at 1:30 let alone betting against your own club. How much do you bet?

I have a very unorthodox method of betting
Rd 1 is a given
Pies last year
Hawks year before
Don't bet much but last year outlay was 500 on Pies
Throughout the year for a collect of 2k
I only bet where I really want us to win do then if we lose I at least make something out of a bad result
Was more than happy to miss out on my collect if Pies lost the GF that's how much I dislike them.
-
Okay then, it is unorthodox. I can't get my head around wanting my side to win but having $500 on them losing.
I'd rather back things I really want to get up - which means I tend to stick to horses.
-
Yep. Il be putting some good coin on the Blues to win

I like your style :thumbsup
-
I may do the same and if the blues beat us then Ill make a 2nd donation to the club for the fighting fund.
-

Now ur talking Ramps
We should all chip in and put a few bucks on the Blues to win and if they do we give it straight to the club .
If we win it's party time.
Win/Win

The centre wickets have been removed and the MCG is ready to go for Thursday week :thumbsup

Betting with your heart and not your head. Thats very orthodox HRT, if you want to lose that is.
-
Boys I have no expectation this year as I didn't last year.
Lets play the kids and hopefully we can win 6-8 games thiis year and improve on last year.
I'm with most posters on here I am not expecting nor entertaining any thoughts for a win, in fact I fear we might cop a flogging of ten goals plus but if I am pleasantly surprised I like most on here will not be disappointed and will have a smile on my face for weeks. :thumbsup

Tigers could give punters the blues
* Nick Quinn
* From: Herald Sun
* March 18, 2011
PUNTERS are either going to be off to a flying start or chasing their tails after unloading on Carlton to make a winning start to the season against Richmond at the MCG on Thursday night.
"To put in perspective exactly how one-sided the betting has been, we have taken $34,800 on Carlton and just $247 on Richmond," TAB Sportsbet's Gary Davies said.
It has been all one-way traffic for Carlton. As soon as we put up the $1.35, punters have snapped it up and they appear in over 90 per cent of football multis at the moment. We will definitely be cheering for the Tigers.
Richmond is unwanted at $3.05.
TAB Sportsbet has already taken two bets of $10,000 on Carlton at $1.35 and bets of $8000 and $5000 at that price.
"The way the money is going we expect Carlton to start shorter than their current price, so punters wanting to take the $1.35 better act quickly," Davies said.

We did smash the Blues in the first half of the NAB cup game with a bunch of kids.
Throw in Deledio, Martin, Grigg, Riewoldt, Cotchin, Newman, Foley and that's a big improvement.
Carlton don't play a zone either, so there is another positive :pray

Tigers out to remedy horror AFL starts
Sam Lienert
AAP
March 18, 2011, 1:26 pm WST
Richmond captain Chris Newman says the Tigers must avoid another nightmare AFL season start against Carlton.
Thrashed by the Blues in front of huge MCG crowds in the past two AFL season-openers, Newman said they could not afford a repeat.
"Absolutely, we know that we've been very disappointing on the last two occasions," he said.
"They've both been really big build-ups and hopefully this year we can go in with some confidence.
"It's really important, I think, for every AFL club.
"To start off 1-0 gives you a little bit of a breather and really can set you up for the season."
The signs are not promising for the Tigers ahead of Thursday night's clash.
They were belted by 68 points by Adelaide in their final practice match, conceding seven last-quarter goals, which coach Damien Hardwick labelled "soul-destroying".
"We've sat back and tried to right a few wrongs and hopefully we can get it right for round one," Newman said.
He acknowledged the Tigers had struggled in the final weeks of the pre-season to work their way out of defence through opponents' zones.
But he said with two of their most experienced backmen - himself and Brett Deledio - having had limited pre-seasons, that should improve as they gained match fitness.
Newman was also confident the Tigers could produce better support acts for Coleman Medallist Jack Riewoldt, after he kicked a third of their goals last season.
Young big man Tyrone Vickery has shown pre-season promise in attack, although another youngster earmarked for a key forward post, Ben Griffiths, is still working his way back from shoulder surgery.
Ex-Melbourne mature-aged rookie Brad Miller, initially recruited as a back-up option, is likely to play against the Blues, after being elevated to the primary list.
"He's definitely in the mix and he's really impressed us over the summer so I don't see why not," Newman said.
"It's just a credit to himself.
"He's come into the club under really tough circumstances for an older guy to come across and try to reestablish himself in the AFL.
"It was a huge task for him and he's done that."

Yep every time I'm behind a car with a sticker on it no passengers or can toy smell what the cheats are cooking I can't help but want to get in front of it and keep it behind me where it belongs. I hate that footy club would like to see nothing more than to grind that footy club into the dirt.

Good news:
Ch 10 has just confirmed the game will be shown LIVE on both TEN and OneHD.
Bad news:
Jon Ralph reckons will get thrashed again.
-
My fellow Perth Oerites will be able to relate to this.
We have to live in the "Cone of Silence" for 3 hours as the game does not come on tv here until 8.30 pm (11.30 AEST)
That 3 hours of avoiding any text messages or phone calls from W@nker mates.Even the facial expressions and body language of family members can give away the result.
I am even too scared to watch the cricket on Thursday night just in case they give away the result.
-
We have an Omen with the Tassie TIGERS just winning the Sheffield shield, they even have the sam club song.........

happy to see NSW lose :cheers

That will make the win on Thursday night if we get it just that little bit sweeter. :gotigers

AFL site is tipping the Blues by 32 pts....
Preview: Carlton v Richmond
By Nat Edwards
Tue 22 Mar, 2011
TV: Network Ten - (Melbourne 8pm, Adelaide 8:30pm, Perth 8:30pm, Sydney/NSW 11pm, Brisbane/QLD 11pm) .......... [Ed: Isn't the game meant to be shown LIVE? ??? ]
RADIO: Melbourne: 3AW, 1116 SEN, ABC774, Triple M Adelaide: Triple M, ABC891, Fiveaa Perth: 6PR, ABC720 Hobart: ABC936 Darwin: ABC105.7 Regional: CROC
BETFAIR ODDS: Carlton $1.37, Richmond $3.65
SUMMARY
The Tigers haven't beaten the Blues since the opening round of 2008 and will be keen to kick off their season with a win.
Carlton will be missing several key players with full-back Michael Jamison and tagger David Ellard suspended while forward Ryan Houlihan is sidelined with a calf injury.
Richmond has worked hard all summer to find another option up forward and it looks as though Jack Riewoldt and Tyrone Vickery will lead a two-pronged attack.
The Blues will need to counter this and without Jamison they might look to Bret Thornton or first-round draft pick Matthew Watson to inject some height into an otherwise undersized backline.
QUESTION MARKS
Both times these sides met last year ended with the Blues winning by more than 50 points. Will this be a more competitive Tiger outfit this year?
For so long Carlton utility Jarrad Waite has filled in wherever needed. With the loss of Jamison, will Waite be called upon to fill a hole in defence or will he make his mark up front?
After only playing four games last year due to injury, Richmond midfielder Nathan Foley is back. Can he make an immediate impact?
PREDICTION
Carlton by 32 points.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/109758/default.aspx
-
I'm sick of Waite smashing us. It's really frustrating to see him running all the way from half back to kick easy goals. I'm sick of Eddie Betts running rings around our hapless backs. And most of all I can't stand Mitch Robinson flexing his puny little arms and dictating play.
:chuck :chuck :chuck :chuck :chuck :chuck

There's questions marks over whether Bower will play tomorrow night for Carlton so there's a chance Jack's opponent could be Matthew Watson from last year's draft.

Sounds like the Blues will be Jack focussed tomorrow night. Up to our other forwards to offer other leading and marking options and our mids to use them.
Operation Stop Riewoldt (http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/109799/default.aspx)
"Jack's a great player, he's a Coleman medallist, and his impact on the game will be critical to us. If we can limit that then we'll go a long way toward winning the game," Ratten said.
-
Hopefully we aren't that predictable
I'd prefer we go in with the instructions to not kick it to Jack
Time for the others to step up around him
-
I'd prefer we go in with the instructions to kick it to the 1-on-1 or the man in space - whoever that is. Hopefully a few bob up AND Jack kicks his bag.

Nice bowl Dookie :lol

The forecast is for increasing showers and windy tomorrow night so that may keep the ball on the ground a lot and mean more stoppages and contested footy.

Works for me. Contested footy is our strength and the downhill skiing scumbags' weakness.

God, please, let it rain.

Needs to rain cats and dogs during the day for it to have an effect on the ground unless of course it rains during the game. Perhaps we can get Bernie Ecclestone to simulate it since he is town. ;D
MCG drainage is great nonetheless.

Well we are only 2 points down but apparently from the live blog I am following we are being smashed. Where the hell is Cotchin???

we are soft soft soft soft soft soft soft.
We should be sponsored by tontine.

-
1/2 time.
Biggest story is we are getting smashed in the clearances. Martin, foley, cotchin and rotating inside mids getting next to nothing of it.
Geez Edwards would have to go out of the side on the performance so far - no impact and a d grade turnover in the goal square.
Gus is soft.
Grigg ok. Conca good, Jackson good. Rance in it. Batchelor looks likely. Our backs have been ok in applying pressure.
-
My man love for Edwards is now man like and diminishing fast...
Of the whipping boys, Nahas been ok, White and Jackson ok as well.
We're just not getting our hands on the ball, Murphy is slaughtering us.
If we can start winning in the middle, or breaking even, we could be a show. Riewoldt is too good for White and we look dangerous when we go forward.
Batchelor been great, Conca been great, Helbig hasn't done much, but doesn't mind the rough stuff :thumbsup
Somebody please KO Betts and Robinson. :pray
-
Jackson and Reiwoldt are the ONLY tough players in our team!!! Never will I bag Jackson.
-
playing well tigers, not giving up 8)
-
C'mon Tiges!!
Bury these EFFERS!!!
-
Looks like we have ran out of puff. Still gave them a scare though.
-
Definately a case of young legs, this will improve.
-
Yeah, we couldn't even manage to get the ball down to Jack.
We were probably lucky to be so close, it should have been lights out halfway through the second term.
I liked all the new kids' games.
Martin was ordinary :help
EFF I hate Carltank!!!
-
Rance was good too.
-
Rance was good too.
Happy with most of the guys, it was just the centre that cost us...
Dare I say it, Tuck might have been handy....
-
just what i needed to get my mojo back....sorry boys, i'd lost it there for a while....GO TIGES!
-
Where was Foley?
I saw him twice and one of them was a turnover :scream
Nason would have been a better stuffin choice.
Deledio - what can i say....a stuffen head case.
Selfish,intellectually challenged and at times a real p o o f t e r.
Jackson deserves all tiger supporters respect.
Tuff,Ticker and tenacity.
Gus tried.
Jak is a freak.
Vickery needs to stop thinking like a 180cm player and more like the giant he is
Cotch worked his way into the game
Newman worked it.
Edwards out,Farmer in.
Nahas - effective in the right moments but footy is about quarters.
Martin - will take afew games to combat the extra attention in 2011.
Gus - Worked hard
Morton - ditto
-
Rance was good too.
Yep one of our shining lights tonight. The improvement in him in the contest and composure is staggering - there is hope yet for Rance to be a long term defender.
Conca and Batchelor showed composure beyond their years(quality), Vickery had an impact and looks to be developing. Jack is an out and out gun. Cotch ran out the game really well after a slow start. Graham got better as the game went on.
Some good signs but gee we were lucky not to be 50pts down at halftime who knows what would have happened then.
Matty white played his role to perfection and dare I say it Nahas prob had one of his best games
-
That kick-in Deledio did that resulted in a Carlton goal really did the damage. I wasn't too impressed with Houli. Thought Cotchin was quiet but picked up in second half. Nahas was good. Jack was superb! Jackson was good. I thought Martin stuffed it up a bit. Tuck would have been handy.
-
:( :(. God I just hate the Blues more and more every year, I really still don't rate them. But it does go to show that we are probably this year and next year off playing the football expected at this level and playing as a team. In all honesty we should have been thumped by over 100 points and that would have been a real let down.
Having not seen the game and only reading blogs and the net scores, why was Cotchin only on for 3 qtrs, where was Deledio for most of the game, why was Floey subbed and did we have any injuries??
So next year at this time when we are all really excited about round 1, lets keep the excitement up but pinch ouselves for a bit of a reality check, saves too much disappointment that way. ;D
-
I agree Edwards has not improved, if not gone backwards
-
Rance was good too.
you must not have gone to the game
gave carlton 3 goals by being caught with the ball
-
Geez, we have some negative nellys on this forum.
-
well, if we are ever going to play finals.
Rance and McGaune wont be playing.
And we need a ruckman as well
-
Just got back.
Did anybody else notice the spelling on the banner?
Anyway...
Helbig: straight back to Coburg, was having shots at goal before the game and missed every one.
way out of his depth
Jake King to come back in next week
Foley had some sort of stomach bug all day.
Need Tucky back in.
Matthew White did his job to perfection (took Yarran out of the game and even kicked a goal)
-
spelling was wrong on banner
-
I must have been watching a different game what did rance do wrong, who was he on exactly..
-

2nd q about to start, he gave 2 away in the first 10 mins
-
I must have been watching a different game what did rance do wrong, who was he on exactly..
And that would be the problem, who was he on?
Blues used resting rucks as key forwards and after Waite went off the tall defence only had one of them to contend with at a time.
If ever you were going to have an easy night as a tall defender, tonight was it.
-
At least we did enough to keep this fixture next year. Thats a positive IMHO.
-
just run down by Betts was Rance, gift no 2 for the quarter for the Blues :birthday
-
Deledio was not great by his standards but he'll boune back
batchelor looks solid and conca is class.
I thought rance was ok.
-
Batchelor very good
-
To be fair to deledio he's trying hold together a back 6 made of a backline of 2 first gamers, his captian who is too slow for Carlton small black forwards, astbury who is a prospect but still young .
And mcgaune who is more or less poo. Gourdis, thursfeild, grimes, post would be no worst.
-
I can cop that ....... just
-
I have to say i was very impressed with Vickery. Grigg is a younger Quicker version of Tuck. Could not have played Tuck tonight.
Edwards terrible game but did a job on Murphy in the 3rd which was descent.
Nahas well he ran straight and not danced in circles.. The best game ive seen him play hands down.
My biggest concern is Graham and Rance. I watched Rance in that Adelaide game and he did nothing to suggest he will be anything but a very good player Coburg player.
The guy is another Kosi. Can take a grab but has no idea about anything else. Has no idea where people are around him. Get rid of him Dimma needs to be dumped ASAP.
Graham dear me. DerickX is coming off an injury and Browne needs to lift. Unfortunately we have to suck it up till something better comes along.
Newman played great tonight.
-
Just got back 2 lanes closes on Hoddle Street.. you idiots council :banghead
Fowards:
Riewoldt = Gun
Morton = Good start, starved of it later in the game
Nahas = Did some good things, but went missing at times, a pass though.
White = Superb on Yarran, will go un noticed, completely ruined their new game plan.
Vickery = Moved well, he's improving slowly
Bachelor = Gem
Mids
Cotchin = Changed the game
Jackson = Respect him alot, good footballer, would be great if his disposal improved. Tough at it again.
Martin = Poor. Must lift.
Houli = Lifted in the 3rd, I rate Houli, I know others don't.
Conca = Gem. Hats off to the recruiters, no-one rated Conca to be first round selection. Looked very very very slick, put his body on the line too.
Defense:
Grigg = Missed a few targets but were the right decisions just the execution wasn't there. I'd rather see these turnovers than a pass that would hit a bloke on the chest but has 2 opponents on him.
Deledio = Ordinary, the first goal they kicked in the last where Judd kicked on the run, Deledio was jogging next to him about 10 seconds before that handball receive. Having an ordinary pre season is Lids.
Astbury = OK
Rance = Looks to have improved, maybe the answer needs to continue to improve though
McGuane = I liked the fact he didn't get his hands on the ball as much as he usually does. Was ok.
Rucks:
Graham = Breaks the heart but the bloke just can't play.
-
Hate losing to this Cheating Footy Club.
Rather than talk about individual performances now I'll save that for later I was shattered we were 14 up
at the last change and we lost by 20. If Jack had not slipped and the FIlth rushed that behind 20 up 5 mins into the last maybe just maybe.... Anyway
My positives were Conca and Batchelor no doubt of the newbies and Helbig likes to get his hands dirty too. :thumbsup
Newman was superb tonight I am so impressed he is really becoming a great leader. :thumbsup
Jack was brilliant and so was Jako. :thumbsup
What gets me is our decision making we have the momentum in the third and in the last before the tide turned we are running forward into space and we don't either hit a target Houli in the last or Nahas tries to take on one too many plaers gets caught or disposes and puts the receiving player under the pump and we turn it over or we just blaze away blindly.
Deledio that clanger turned the game. Can blame him for the error but can't blame him for the game. Edwards is back to his old tricks and someone (Dimma) needs to get into Dusty's head and tell him give it off don't try and fend off 3.
We were in a winning position and we blew it. Carlton were wasteful in front of goal all night and we had a chance to make them pay and we didn't that's what gets me. If we kicked 14 20 in a game I can guarantee the opposition would beat us kicking 18 goals 9. :-\
We are a developing side and these games as these kids mature won't slip from our grasp
Other than that the signs were encouraging, the kids hung in there due to Carlton's wastefulness and we gave ourselves a chance to win. We didn't it hurts cause it was that Filthy Mob but for me there is plenty to work with and I think that tonight's game did nothing to deter me that Dimma has us on the right track. Still think the top two or three will put us to the sword but we will do ourselves no disservice this year. :thumbsup
-
I cant believe we blew this game in the end. What a lost opportunity to stick it up our critics.
We were 10 points up with around 10 minutes to go. Carlton were playing like a rudderless ship and were on the ropes waiting for the knockout blow.We had all the momentum.
Jack was making a mockery of the Carlton backline.
This may be the first of many games in 2011 where Richmond snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Our young team will have to learn how to win the tough games.
Anyhow the positive for me is that based on last night- 2011 will be more enjoyable than last year.

Just on Foley from the RFC website:
The Tigers also lost a runner after half-time with midfielder Nathan Foley succumbing to a gastro bug that had plagued him all week.
Hardwick had planned to substitute on an extra runner with fresh legs in Daniel Connors in the second half, but hadn't expected Foley to be the one he needed to replace.
He admitted he made a mistake with his use of the substitute.
"I made a blue to be perfectly honest," Hardwick said.
"Axel Foley had gastro all week and I sort of half forced his hand to play, which of course cost us in the end.
"He just couldn't go on and had vomiting and diarrhea.
"So that was my blue. Dan has obviously had an interrupted pre-season also and we just tried to get some experience on the field after half-time."
So this explains why he was subbed off at half time, bit hard for a guy to play a good game when he constantly feels like he is about to poo himself :-\
I am absolutely gutted we almost had the filth :(
Let's be honest though, with the young side we have, we did very very well. You could see in that last quarter they just ran out of legs. Get a few more pre seasons into the young guys and we will run all over opposition in games like this one down the track! We are heading places, slowly but surely :gotigers

Caro on 3aw tonight said we should have won after being 14 points up at 3/4 time. Kept harping on about it as being our best chance to get a win this season with us playing the Saints, Pies and Hawks next. She even said that if the coaching staff hadn't erred playing a sick Foley which forced Richmond into a early substitution then we may have had fresh legs to come on in the last quarter to win us the game.

Lethal didn't think much of us today in 3aw's preview. He said he saw nothing new from Richmond apart from Cotchin looking better.
Mike still couldn't believe Tucky wasn't in our best 22. Richo replied that while we are a good contested footy side our major weakness is we get killed on the outside and Tucky is just another inside player so he wouldn't fix that. Mike then argued that surely someone else who normally plays inside could play outside allowing Tucky to play. Richo mentioned Martin as the Club wouldn't want Martin to get continually bashed and crashed at a young age.

Caro is 100% correct. Sure we were lucky to still be in the contest at half time, we found ourselves in a winning position.

also the club made a mistake in its choice of sub as well.
Connors looked overweight and has missed some sessions.

Great iniative of the club to have more interviews and ways which fans can continue to relate to the club throughout the week. Enjoyed this little clip and nice to see Browny still playing a role in the club. One of the best parts of this new 'era' is how many Richmond people are keen to be about the clun playing a part in helping it succeed. :thumbsup

One thing watching the tv replay the other night was that in the last quarter Carlton went old school in general play and pushed spare men back in defence around Jack and we just didn't adapt our forward forays from the 3rd qtr when Jack was able to get one out behind the Carlton forward press. During the middle part of the final quarter the ball was rebounding back and forth between HF/HB lines and we had at least 4-5 good chances to go inside 50 and score to put the game away but our mids just bombed the ball without much thinking hoping Jack by some miracle could outmark 4 defenders. All we needed was some composure and to lower our eyes and hit up other targets higher up inside 50 as Jack was attracting the Carlton defence closer to goal. Our mids just became too Jack conscious and predictable which is something Dimma is trying to avoid.

Nathan Thompson on SEN tonight bagged our performance against Carlton last week. He said we were just one good quarter from Jack and one bad Carlton quarter from a totally embarrassing effort given the lop-sided inside 50 count and got stuck into the likes of Jackson and Edwards for continually turning the ball coming off half-back.

I listened to that, OE.
To me, it seemed like Thommo didn't really know what he was talking about.
