Match preview: Port Adelaide v Richmond
AFL.com.au
Lee Gaskin
Apr 9, 2019
Where and when: Adelaide Oval, Saturday, April 8, 4.05pm ACST
Last time they met: Adelaide Oval, round 12, 2018: Port Adelaide 10.12 (72) defeated Richmond 8.10 (58)
The Power kicked seven of their 10 goals in a dynamic second quarter to set up the 14-point victory. Chad Wingard had 31 disposals, Ollie Wines had 29 and Justin Westhoff kicked three goals for the Power, while Jack Riewoldt kicked three majors for the Tigers.
What it means for Port Adelaide: The Power can improve to 3-1 for the season and bounce back from a hard-fought 17-point loss to Brisbane at the Gabba last Saturday night.
What it means for Richmond: It's a critical game for the 2017 premiers. A loss to the Power would leave the Tigers reeling at 1-3 after the first month of the season.
How Port Adelaide wins: Run, run, run. Transition the ball quickly out of defence, get it flowing through the midfield and allow Robbie Gray, Brad Ebert and young gun Connor Rozee to be effective up forward.
How Richmond wins: The Tigers need their second-tier players to step up to help them overcome the loss of their experienced stars. Jack Riewoldt (wrist) and Alex Rance (knee) are already sidelined, Dustin Martin is suspended and Trent Cotchin injured his hamstring in last weekend's 49-point loss to Greater Western Sydney.
The stat: Since Dustin Martin made his AFL debut in 2010, at least two of Martin, Alex Rance, Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin have played in every game for Richmond. Tigers coach Damien Hardwick has never been without the entire quartet.
The match-up: Scott Lycett v Toby Nankervis
Lycett has been outstanding since moving to the Power, sharing the ruck duties with Paddy Ryder while also playing up forward. Nankervis will have his hands full dealing with the Power's ruck combo. Nankervis is the seventh-ranked ruckman in the Schick AFL Player Ratings – and No.58 overall. Lycett started the season ranked 299th overall, but has rocketed up to 226th, and 14th among ruckmen.
It's a big week for: Kane Lambert
The 27-year-old takes on a more significant role in the Tigers midfield with Cotchin and Martin ruled out. Lambert often goes unnoticed, but he's an experienced ball-winner who will have his hands full dealing with Travis Boak, Ollie Wines and Sam Powell-Pepper.
Big call: Former Power captain Boak to continue his stellar start to the season, finishing the game with at least 40 disposals.
Prediction: Port Adelaide by 27 points

Things are going to get worse before they get better .
-
Port is the type of side that would lose this game, but I just can't see it happening.
-
I hope I am badly wrong but I have grave fears we will be thrashed by Port.
-
I hope I am badly wrong but I have grave fears we will be thrashed by Port.
I reckon you’re wrong
-
I get this feeling Port will come out with a little voice in their heads going "Hehe, heres an easy win". They will expect it to just happen, we will pounce and win by 5 points.
-
Nankervis said the inclusion of Sydney Stack last week was a prime example that Richmond had strong depth, the 18-year-old logging 17 disposals and booting one goal on debut against Greater Western Sydney.
“Sydney Stack on the weekend was really impressive and there’s a few other boys that are a chance to play this weekend as well,” Nankervis told the Herald Sun.
“It is only Round 4 so we’ve got so much time to improve and I feel really confident that we’ll do that.”

Hinkley comparing us losing Rance, Jack, Cotch & Dusty to them losing Dixon, Hartlett, Watts & Amon :huh.
DEALING with the tag of being strong favourites to beat an undermanned Richmond at Adelaide Oval on Saturday isn't sitting well with Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley.
Hinkley said the Power were down on troops as well, with Charlie Dixon (leg), vice-captain Hamish Hartlett (hamstring), utility Jack Watts (leg) and midfielder Karl Amon (knee) among those on the sidelines.
"It's really challenging for us, because there's some expectation upon what Richmond have got and what we have got," Hinkley said.
"If you look at it in the whole picture of things, we've got some players missing, they've got some players missing.
"It never counts for too much once the game starts.
"Regardless of who we play, whether it's Richmond with all their available squad or some of their players unavailable, that's no different to us."

I don't see how he compared the players? Maybe he undersells the fact our outs are better than his, but I think the point was both of us are missing important players.
Anyhow
proof will be in the pudding
-
personally im only looking forward to 1 thing tomorrow....to see if Bolton can hit a target
the only thing he has lacked imo....disposal
has everything else he needs to shine

Amon- I don't even know who the stuff he is

He knows his trio are not even worthy to be mentioned in the same breath

We can win today. Tigers by 15 points.
-
I hope you're right Ramps and we cause a massive upset but I'm not that optimistic. If it was a wet day over there, I'd be more hopeful as that would turn it into a game of effort and territory in which you can pinch a win against the odds. Today will be either one of our greatest wins or we'll cop an absolute flogging. I hope I'm wrong but sadly I think it will be the latter. Port are downhill skiers so it wouldn't surprise me if they have a day out at their home ground against our undermanned team. Whatever the result, I just hope we don't get anymore injuries :banghead (touchwood).

NO LATE CHANGES

They run it up the other end for a goal :P.

We're not going to win if we allow the opposition another week of easy transition goals out of our forward line :banghead.
-
Graham good clearance to Ross to Ellis. Towards to Lynch. Port clear again. They miss though.

-
Prestia to graham across the ground to Ellis. To HF to Menadue. Goes long. Good contesting. Castagna to Caddy who snaps our first :gotigers

Pressure and tackling back to a high level. Our defence looks shambles without rance, everytime it goes deep in there I’m expecting a goal to be scored.
-
Aside from the first 20 mins against Carlton, our goalkicking has been pathetic so far this season :banghead. Missing so many gettable shots that should be kicked at this level. If we had kicked the ones we should we would be in front :scream.
-
Contested footy even. Getting smashed in the uncontested possies.
Port Adelaide recorded 40 more uncontested possessions in the opening term. It has averaged 57 more uncontested possessions per game than its opposition this season, ranked No.1.
Noah Balta has won three intercept possessions with two of these launching scores for his team, including that goal to Josh Caddy.
Richmond has scored three behinds from set shots while Port have booted four goals from this source.

5 straight this qtr. Kicking straight makes a difference.

This deliberate out of bounds rule has all of a sudden become very subjective. Is it deliberate when you are in a contest? Surely the sport allows you to spoil or stop your opponent from taking possession. The force you use to spoil the ball should not be a consideration... Right???
-
Baker to Higgins inside 50. Pack mark to Port 25 out.
Poor kick back to Floss. Inside 50. Caddy brings it down as a loose ball but Port clear.
Point to Port.

His opponent should’ve been pinged for front on contact as he didn’t have eyes for the ball amd played the man only. Terrible decision by the ump. :banghead

Baker off the ground and Bolton marks outside 50. Goes towards Lynch but can't mark. Throw-in.
Port up and under and they clear. Rozee run down by Stack but the ump says he was held and it's a free to Port ::).
We get a free deep in defence to Grimes. Now it's a throw-in.
Blata to Lambert towards Caddy. Lynch to Caddy ... soccers it and it bounces and bounces through :gotigers
Back in front! :gotigers
Rich 13.9-87
Port 13.7-85
-
Geez that call against Stacky was horrid
-
Across the entire game the umpires have looked after us IMO
-
Stack takes the defensive mark. Across to Ellis. To Astbury. Free to Caddy but his kick is cut off.
Stack takes another defensivr mark. Kmac to Higgins to Sheds on the wing. Over to graham too slow. His kick is cut off by Port.
Throw-in on the wing. We soccer it forward and it's a ball-up 60 out. Port clear. Sheds gathers but it's a free to Port ::).
Grimes outmarks Gray but he coughs it up :P. SSP dumps a Tiger but that's ok apparently. Port goal.

Poor goalkicking in the first half and key mistakes in the second half are costing us.

Grimes marks it again. But it he kicks it OOTF :P. Port go deep but Ellis tackles and gets the HTB free.
His kick though is marked by Port. Kick to 25 out and they mark it.
Misses it ...phew!

2:15 to go.
-
Eff me we are a rabble, lazy, play from behind, some terrible skills for professional footballers.
-
Sheds to Floss and bombs it long. Port marks.
Can we stop them taking these contested marks.
Well done Grimes marks it. Now find a Tiger. Gets to Astbury. Rioli can't mark but Ross gets it to Caddy to Baker who hits Lynch 45 out. Goallllllllllllllllllllllll! :gotigers

-
Namnk to Prestia who gets it forward 70m but the ump pays it deliberate ::).
We get it back with Ross taking the mark. Bombs it to HF. Lynch big mark. Chips to Sheds to Lambert.
Siren!
You ******** beauty! :gotigers :gotigers

Wow
-
A famous victory here tonight. A win for the ages.
-
Deliberate again... across your body out of the centre square. Sole intent was to put it over the boundary line. No feel for football!
-
Would go to close to being one of our best H/A wins under Dimma. Awesome courageous stuff, Tiges! :clapping.
-
I'll admit it! I never thought we could win this one ... but .... here we are! :gotigers

Enjoy the win. Huge win for the future of the RFC.

Much better game than the VFL one earlier today.
-
We found a couple in Stack and Ross.
Hopefully we don’t need to see Ellis much longer.
-
Young fellas are looking alright! Jack Ross, Sydney Stack, Bolton, Baker, Balta all looking like gooduns I reckon. Good to see some hunger
and enthusiasm back in the team. Some of the seniors need to remember that feeling imo.

He wasn't bad in the first half, Ill give him that.

Absolutely awesome win. Great performances all round. Our tackling and pressure was back and hopefully for good. Great debut by the young fella to follow on from sticky last week.
Whoever comes out for dusty and possibly houli next week will be unlucky.
It’s tealky unfortunate that when rance did his knee astbury effectively did his too.....

I'll admit it! I never thought we could win this one ... but .... here we are! :gotigers
Same here. Feeling high on a cloud right now. So proud of the boys both oldies and cubs for their 4 quarter fight and winning against all odds :clapping.

Just a magnificent Victory for the boys. Simply brilliant.

Boltons game guys ?
Not many possessions but each one was of high quality. We looked dangerous every time he got the ball.
-
Personally, I look forward to watching Cotch, Jack and Dusty work their way back into the team through the ressies.
These blokes deserve to stay in the team, maybe dump Ellis.
-
Ellis was serviceable today. Much better than the last few weeks.
-

Great game! Has serious x-factor and makes things happen.
Baker and Bolton both excellent. Castagna poor with the ball but great without it. No place for butler next week for sure.
-
He was a lot bloody better than serviceable. He was very good. Looked confident.
The wing :shh

Umpires and the rules have just about totally destroyed the game 😔

Can someone please lock Gandalph back in the embassy.
-
He was a lot bloody better than serviceable. He was very good. Looked confident.
The wing :shh
Agree was good today people saying he should be dropped are not basing it off today’s game. Not every player is going to be hard as nails and constantly put their head over the ball but aslong as he plays to his strength which is his long penetrative kicks and aerobic capacity then no reason that there isn’t a spot for him on the wing.
-
Boltons game guys ?
He ran hard today, first time I can recall him doing for a really extended period of time.
With a bit more seniority around him when Cotch and Dusty are back, he could really blossom this season.

Felt we would win but the umpires concerned me. We need our young players to believe. This win will mean everything to them and Hardwick is a coach who knows how to utilise a win like this. Today was huge I reckon in our development. We should be serious premiership contenders in 2020 and 2021. I suppose tome will tell.
-
How's Hinkley we got a lot of outs to please.
Be hilarious if in his post-game presser Hinkley uses their outs as an excuse for losing :wallywink. Watts playing would've made all the difference eh Ken? :rollin

So Ramps, you're predicting a threepeat after we win this year's flag? ;)
Seriously though, you're right. This is a massive win in terms of our cubs believing in themselves to perform and win at this level. Exciting stuff! :thumbsup

I think we can make the 8 this year. If next year Rance comes back ok with these kids coming through I think we could do great things in 2020 and 21.

Take your blinkers off, he was huge
For me, he needs to do this more than once to impress me. He has been putrid so far this year. Maybe he is being played out of position.
-
Every one on the field today had some terrible moments but also had some fantastic moments. The thing that struck me today was is our gameis more about system than personal. To win without our big four but playing our same system as 2017 and 2018 means to me that its more about our system than the personal we have out there. Not sure what that means for our Jack and Lynch foward setup. Maybe Jack has to play up higher.
Also I have been critical of Ellis before but he played well today when we needed him too. Can't take that away from him.

There was a moment in the last where Lynch was off the ground for a rest and we had to use Caddy as our main long tall forward target. When Jack comes back that won't happen again.
I think both Jack and Lynch will rotate during games when they play together again. Lynch wasn't match fit at the start of the season so we didn't see them working together at their best. While they will swap, I think you're right Fluffy with Jack spending more time playing high forward as he is a smart and good user of the footy. Jack will go deeper forward if Lynch is used in the ruck or if we want Lynch to give us a tall marking option for the down the line kick along a wing.
-
Just watched a replay of the game.
Gee, how clever was Prestia with that final centre clearance.
FWIW, I do think the umpire was correct in calling it deliberate. But I reckon that worked to our advantage and wouldn't mind betting that it is a set play.
Port had no option but to kick it down the line where we wanted it.

Is One game out of twenty good enough? Or even ONE ok season out of 10?
Ok Let’s give the bloke another 20 games and turn a blind eye with his constant pulling out of contests and mediocre performances, let’s excuse him constantly kicking backwards and sideways giving the ball to teammates in worse predicaments than himself etc.
Hopefully by round 22 we might see him play another decent game, by then we might be able to get over it. :clapping :rollin
-
Which season was his ok one?
The premiership year?
The year where he was runner up in the BnF and in the AA squad of 40?
One of the multiple years he was top 5 BnF?
One of the seasons where he played 23 of his 150 odd consecutive games?
Which season are you talking about?
Just put a sock in it. If you're not going to give him credit for a strong game then don't bother bagging him for his bad ones.
-
HRT spot on.
I give Lambert a kicking on this forum when he deserves it but give him credit for his good games. Surely you Ellis haters can try doing the same.

Said he was better. And got better as the game went on. His 1st qtr was typicsl BEllis.
Was he BOG? IMV, no. Was he in our top 6. Yeah he was
But yesterday needs to his minimum out put. Not a cameo
History shows this is not what we'll get every week so forgive me if I remain not sold especially afte r last weeks "effort"
Credit to him for an much improved game but it needs to be the norm, not the exception. I'd hope even you'd agree

I wasn't really talking to you, more Tigra.
But this is where you set an unrealistic standard. He was fantastic yesterday, it is impossible for that to be his 'minimum'. If that is the minimum we expect from him and he achieves it week in, week out.... then he'll get 40 votes in the Brownlow this year.
What should be the standard is the same effort, intensity and productivity. 18-25 decent disposals each week and decent efforts. I think we'll see that should he remain on the wing.
He'll play another poor game again at some point and I hope we're not all going to bring our pitchforks out when it happens. Give credit where it is due and criticise when necessary.
I said it earlier in the thread....confidence is the most important thing in football. You have been watching a guy who has been highly uncomfortable at half back of late and had no confidence. Dimma backed him in, moved him back to the wing and low and behold...after one quarter of football he started to gain some confidence!

Give it a rest mate.
He was ok yesterday at best.
He still poo himself on more than one occasion which should not ever happen after playing 150 games of AFL footy. He still missed targets and fumbled. The start of the 3rd he made 3 mistakes in as many minutes.
Do you think it’s normal for probably 90% of Tigers supporters to talk about him like most of us do?
Is there a Tiger player in history with his sort of stigma?
Most if not all Tigers supporters I know think he is scared and want him gone, which I hope he is at the end of this year.
-
You just prove you have a severe case of Brandon Ellis Derangement Syndrome by saying he was 'ok at best'. This coming from the guy who pumps up (and at times, rightfully so) Jason Castagna who averages around 5 effective disposals per game.
150 odd games of AFL footy. Gee. Horrible effort by a 25 year old.

5. THE BOOKENDS
A total team effort from the Tigers. But when the game needed to be won, and saved, it was Tommy Lynch and Dylan Grimes who stood tallest. Lynch stayed close to home all night, his first seven disposals were all scores and he killed the game in the final quarter with several goals. Grimes might be the most respected player at the Tigers and for the past two years the Tigers have urged All-Australian selectors to consider him for a defensive position. And they won’t let up. Grimes was enormous against Port Adelaide on Saturday night. He took five contested, intercept marks — four of them in the final quarter. More games like that one and AA is not beyond him.

What did they want lynch to do with 3 guys roughing him up?
Sick call from the ump paying a 50 against him for that too ::)
-
It was strange that it was an obvious strategy to physically target Lynch.
There were about four or five examples of multiple opponents attacking him.
Like to see the club make comment about this EVERY time it happens, especially when we win.
I understand that it is hard for Hardwick to hold more than one thought in his head at a time but Balme should stress to him that when you win is the best time to complain.
-
Wallace said our win was one of those only once in a decade against the odds wins.
He gave us a rare albatross in his 'footy golf' rankings for this week.

There's a lot of good players in our team even without the BIG 4 and Port Adelaide aren't world beaters.
Not sure it was that unexpected like 1 in a 1000

I like George because he has a crack and works hard.
We all know he is limited and that’s why he was a rookie, but at least we all know he will give his all. I don’t think anyone can deny that.
It’s a shame I cannot say that about Bellis.
Anyway let’s hope they both play well this week and we get another win.
-
Bellis had a cracking game on the weekend...... he just needs to back it up.
-
Edwards deserves enormous praise for his game. Played a real captain's game.
-
So last week while undermanned we beat the team on their home deck that has just flogged the premiers away.
Welcome to tipping in 2019 ;D.
