Free flowing game believe it or not. Goalkicking ordinary. We just didn't find marking targets into 50 so shots were from long or fell short and rushed off hands. Chol is running around on a wing which means Moore leads up as a high forward leaving Butler to be the deep target.

Naish has really improved from last year. Turner doing well too.

50 - 47 kicks
30 - 22 marks
11 - 10 inside 50s
11 - 10 rebound 50s.

Finally get a mark inside 50. Naish to Soldo 45 out. But big Ivan can't make the distance and it's no score.

We're peppering the F50 but can't find a mark. Butler snaps another point.

We finally get a set shot with Moore getting a free kick. Hooray we kick one straight!  :gotigers

Rich  1.7-13
Port   0.2-2

Markov loses his footing and it's a bad turned over. But Morris saves a certain goal with a run down tackle.

Momentum has swung. We're doing so dumb footy. Thankfully the siren goes.

Half-time

Richmond   0.6   4.8-32
Port Melb.   0.2   1.5-11

Goals: Moore, Miller, Aarts, Fletcher.

We were on top for most of that quarter. Port still in the game due to our lack of conversion in the first 40 mins and a momentum swing late in the 2nd qtr (thanks to the umps compelled by some dumb panic footy from us).

Even our ressies are having trouble with the 666 rule. Two breaches so far.

Good to see Butler responding well to his dropping. He is actually working hard both with and without the footy.

Naish not as prominent as the first quarter but his disposal is clean. Much improved.

RCD is doing the inside work at stoppages. Still not ready for the seniors but promising signs.

Markov is Menadue's twin. Reads the play well across HB to intercept but then coughs it up.

Chol for a big bloke still needs to use his body and strength in marking contests. He could rip a game a apart if he could take contested marks.

We did our best to turn it over by hand in midfield but finally Turner gathers and goes long to Moore. Can't mark. Loose ball at 50. Port player in the best position but we pressure him off the ball and Coffield nails it from 40.

That last play has summed some of the game up.

Which mids are playing on the inside and in the centre square?

Seems like none of our leading disposal winners are contested ball winners and given one of them listed has only touched it 11 times, that seems odd.

Tbh these guys have had our number for so long I don’t care how they play just get the W.

Yep, I thought he was excellent today.  So good at finding the ball in a pack & feeding off to a runner with a handball.  Really superb in tight spaces & in traffic.      :clapping

I only saw a little bit of the final quarter as Im stuck in dialysis. Who were our bests and is Miller improving at all?
It was a weird game. Messy for most of it until we broke the game open in the last 20 mins. No one had high possessions and we got most of our goals on outside transition rather than via clearances from our inside mids. Turner had the most possies (22) playing off a half-back flank.

For me Naish was our best as far as being next in line for a senior recall. Clean by foot in a game where most were sloppy.
Eggy, Garth and Beasley (VFL-listed) were all very good in defence and helped keep Port to just 7 goals. Eggy's improvement is quite astonishing. One of our bests today.
Butler took his demotion well and worked very hard including his chasing and tackling. Will be named in our bests. Whether he gets an instant recall will depend on how our small forwards in the seniors go today.
CCJ was decent. We dominated the hitouts with him and Soldo.
English got in our top disposal getters (14). Did a couple of neat things but made a couple of bad blues as well.
RCD played inside mid but didn't get a lot of it as you'd expect from a ballwinner in that position.
Chol is just plain frustrating. If he took contested marks like he did in the last 5 mins all game he would tear games apart. Just doesn't have that footy nous nor shows that physical aggression a big bloke should have all game.
Moore didn't do much aside from those two goals.
Aarts is at his level.

Miller did some nice things across HF. As someone else said perhaps a position for us to persist with him.

He is. Especially his awareness by hand  :o. Much improved and would easily be in our bests today.

Gee lads, you’re putting a bit of mayo on Eggy’s performance. Whole egg

Well he was hard(boiled) at the footy, scrambled for the loose pill and poached opposition kicks for the intercept. It was a cOMpLETTE performance. No yoke!  ;)

Seriously though, if Eggy keeps this form up he'll be in line for a senior debut. Especially with Rance gone for the year and if no one else can fill the void in our senior side's defence.

From the Herald-Sun website:

Dan Butler showed he is ready for an immediate return to Richmond’s senior side with an impressive outing in the VFL on Saturday.

The 22-year-old applied his trademark manic pressure forward of the ball and finished with 15 disposals, 1.2 and a number of goal assists.

“He got rewarded for his work late and looked better as the game wore on,” Richmond VFL coach Craig McRae said.

But the Richmond premiership player was beaten to best-on-ground honours by the youngest player on Richmond’s list, Fraser Turner.

The 18-year-old looked at home in Richmond’s engine room and ended the game with a team-high 22 disposals.

“I think he has a lot of upside, he looks like a nice AFL player in the making,” McRae said.

“He’s learning his way to be a Richmond player and every week he seems to be better at that.”

Patrick Naish is another young Tiger that will have fans excited after turning in an impressive 19 disposal game.

“He’s played some really good footy, this isn’t a one week thing for him he’s a really important player for us,” McRae said.

“His ball use is really critical and his contest stuff is really standing out.

Ryan Garthwaite also returned to the Tigers’ VFL side following the 49-point loss to GWS last week and impressed McRae with his defensive work.

“Ryan Garthwaite is always really hard to play on at this level and we love having him in our team and he makes us stronger down back,” he said.

Mabior Chol and Callum Moore both kicked two goals for Richmond in their 43-point win.

VFL Tigers' persistence pays off

Brenton Mann
AFL media
Apr 13, 2019

Richmond's VFL side registered its first win at home for 2019 on the back of a six-goal final term, withstanding a persistent Port Melbourne, to run out winners, 13.14 (92) to 7.7 (49).

In a hotly-contested affair, the Tigers and Borough fought and scrapped from siren to siren, with Richmond's perseverance and evenness of contribution holding sway.

Richmond’s unrelenting pressure shone bright once again, holding the visitors to a sole goal in the first half, with its defensive unit proving watertight for most of the day.

In a goalless opening term, both sides shared patches of dominance but failed to capitalise on the scoreboard.

Patrick Naish made great position inside 50 on two occasions but sprayed two shots he’d normally kick, and a Dan Butler right-foot snap dribbled the wrong side of the goal post.

While the forwards looked a little rusty, two key Tiger defenders were sharp, alert and resolute.

Ryan Garthwaite and Hugh Beasley were rock-solid down back, halting Port Melbourne and then propelling the Tigers forward at will.

Garthwaite had to contend with Jordan Lisle, while Beasley locked horns with the Borough’s colossal forward, Khan Haretuku.

Both defenders accounted for their direct opponents, and then instigated Richmond’s attacking chains from the back half.

Ivan Soldo was another who held his own in the first quarter, as he went toe-to-toe with Port Melbourne’s man-mountain, Tom Goodwin.

Soldo got his hand to the ball at the ruck contests, was a helping hand down back, and provided a contest whenever the ball was in his area, be it up forward or through the middle.

The defenders dominated again in the second term, but this time in foreign territory.

VFL Tiger James Fletcher snuck forward and hit the scoreboard with a ripping snap from congestion, with Butler setting up the rebounding half-back.

Ben Miller was the next backman to get the Tiger fans roaring, as he rose high, clunking an intercept mark inside 50.

Miller, a laid-back character from country WA, seized the moment and eased through his first goal in the Yellow and Black.

Callum Moore was the man to initially break the goal drought, as he drew a free kick and snapped truly from the Jack Dyer Stand pocket, much to the chagrin of the boisterous Borough faithful.

The goal ignited an already smouldering contest, with Port Melbourne attempting to rattle the Tigers.

First-year Tiger, Luke English was their target, with the unassuming midfielder set the task or curbing the influence of Borough ball magnet, Tom O’Sullivan.

English was unflappable, standing tall as his Tiger brethren rallied by his side.

Butler, returning from AFL duties, then set the game alight with a trademark passage of play.

His pressure and urgency was there from the get-go, but like several of his fellow forwards, he lacked a bit of polish to finish off his good work.

That changed in an instant after Butler found Jake Aarts with an inside-out torp at top speed.

Butler stormed forward off half-back, evading the desperate lunges of Port Melbourne, got the give-and-go from Fraser Turner and found Aarts free inside 50.

And the man playing his 50th game for Richmond VFL kicked truly.

The Tigers held a 21-point lead at half-time and had plenty of work ahead of them to eventually get over the top of the Borough.

Port Melbourne burst out of the blocks in the second half, as Blake Pearson swooped on a loose ball and watched his right-foot snap sail through.

The Borough had found their voice with the travelling hoards of Port Melbourne fans willing their side on from the terrace.

It took another defender to stem the tide for the Tigers.

As Naish caused a turnover on the paint of Richmond’s 50, Dan Coffield streamed down from the back half, accepted the handball from Naish and kicked truly.

The Tigers led by 20 points, but as it has done for over a century, Port Melbourne responded.

Back-to-back goals had the Borough fans crowing once again and an upset on the road was front of mind.

In stepped Fletcher.

Richmond was clinging to a 16-point lead and needed a steadying goal heading into the final change - and Fletcher delivered, for his second major of the day.

In a game which was an arm wrestle from the opening bounce, you felt that the team which capitalised on its chances in the last quarter would prove to be victorious.

Soldo kicked off the goal flurry in the final term, with a soccer goal from close range.

The Borough hit straight back and looked like pressing their claim for an upset, before Butler took matters into his own hands.

Richmond streamed forward off a defensive half turnover and the premiership-winning forward was the last link in the chain, scorching past the clutches of Borough defenders and goaling on the run.

Butler then had a direct hand in the Tigers’ next major, as he handed off to Moore in the goalsquare for what was the sealing goal.

Mabior Chol had to bide his time for the day, with the high turnover game proving tricky for the key forward.

However, when the tide eventually turned the Tigers' way, Chol came into his own and showcased the raw natural ability he possesses.

Chol attacked the ball in the air with a blend of elegance and ferocity, marked strongly and took his chances when they presented, finishing with an equal game-high, two goals.

The VFL Tigers will enjoy a week off before heading on the road to face the Casey Demons in Round 4.

This game was so bad to watch I think it has scarred me in some way. I keep having flashbacks to the late 80's and early 90's.

VFL and development coach, Craig McRae's summary:

Fraser Turner - 25 disposals, 15 uncontested possessions, 10 handball receives, four rebound 50s & three inside 50s

“Played on a wing for the entirety of the game. He’s showing some great signs of growth in his development as a player and led the team with 25 disposals. He’s got some structural work to do, but on a whole he’s really playing to his strengths, which is pleasing to see.”

Patrick Naish - 25 disposals, 17 uncontested possessions, 10 handball receives & five inside 50s

“Continues his really good form at this level. Again, a high-disposal winner - had 18 kicks on the day and equal-highest disposal with 25. A good balance of contested and uncontested possessions. He had two shots on goal for the day from a wing.”

Derek Eggmolesse-Smith - 19 disposals, four marks & four rebound 50s
“He continued his really strong defensive focus at this level. He’s really supporting our team mechanics and is playing great football and 19 disposals was a good reward for his efforts.”

Riley Collier-Dawkins - 18 disposals, 11 contested possessions, five clearances & six handball receives

“A strong body, he started the game really well. His 18 disposals, 11 contested, were a feature, as well as five clearances. It was really pleasing to see him play to his strengths.”

Dan Butler - 17 disposals, four tackles, one goal, three goal assists
“Returned from AFL footy for his first VFL game since late last year. He really showed his speed and ability to cover the ground. He had 17 disposals as a small forward, kicked 1.2 and had three direct goal assists, which was a highlight on the day. He looks like he’s ready to go back to the AFL when opportunity presents.”

Luke English - 16 disposals, three tackles, six clearances & four rebound 50s
“Played a really accountable role through the midfield. Had been playing forward but it was really important to be able to put him back in the midfield. He provided a good, strong contest and had commitment to his role. His clearances led the team and he looks at his best through the midfield position.”

Callum Moore - 14 disposals, four marks, two goals & two tackles
“Has had a great start to the season and kicked another two goals. His marking - one in particular where he jumped into the pack - was a highlight, playing to his strengths. He’s playing good football, just waiting for AFL opportunity.”

Oleg Markov - 13 disposals, five marks & five handball receives

“Returned from the AFL, but looked quite sore post game after injuring his knee. His customary dash off half-back really stood out.”

Mabior Chol - 13 disposals, eight marks, two goals & four inside 50s
“Started the game reasonably slowly, but when put into the ruck he lifted his intensity and started to get rewarded late in the game as a forward. He took a couple of really nice contested marks, and finished the game with eight marks, with three of those contested. He kicked a couple of goals late in the game too.”

Jake Aarts - 13 disposals, five marks, five tackles & one goal
“Returned after being out for a week with injury and had a slow start, but as the game wore on he really looked like his contest and his tackling were there for everyone to see, including five on the day which led the team.”

Callum Coleman-Jones - 12 disposals, four marks, two clearances and two rebound 50s
“He had 12 disposals, playing mostly forward this week, with a little bit of time in the ruck, sharing the duties with Mabior Chol. His performance last week was the best he’s played for the club; now he didn’t reach those heights, but there were periods in the game where he showcased his strengths, particularly in the marking contests, which was pleasing to see.”

Ben Miller - Nine disposals, one goal & six marks

“Second game back from injury and had nine disposals, playing as a bit of a swingman with a bit down back and then went forward where he looked comfortable. He kicked a beautiful set-shot goal and set-up another through great positioning and playing his role.”

Ivan Soldo - 25 hit-outs, nine disposals, one goal & two clearances

“Played a fantastic game for us - dominated the ruck, won clearances, tackled really well, was strong, and managed to kick a goal. He’s playing great football.”

Ryan Garthwaite - Seven disposals, three spoils, four marks & three tackles
“Back from the AFL and had a low possession count, but was really hard and miserly to play against. Between him and Hugh Beasley, they kept Jordan Lisle scoreless, which was a terrific job by both those guys, especially Ryan who really stood-out.”
