Bad Blues ban
Fiona Byrne
Herald Sun December 22, 2009
TWO Carlton stars have been banned by Crown casino after brawling with hotel staff in another embarrassing blow to the football club.
The latest fiasco for Carlton came when Ryan Houlihan and Andrew Walker - one of them dressed only in his underpants - emerged from a lift into the Crown Promenade Hotel foyer early on Sunday.
According to sources one of the players was arguing with the woman before a fight broke out between the teammates that ended up involving hotel staff.
A security guard also became involved before police arrived as the fight was brought under control.
Walker was escorted off casino property and Houlihan allowed to return to his room.
It is believed the drama was caught on Crown's security cameras.
Crown yesterday confirmed it had slapped a withdrawal of licence on the pair, meaning they are no longer allowed to enter the casino.
The incident is the latest in a long list of misbehaviour by Carlton players.
Fevola's list of booze-fuelled, anti-social antics included putting a barman in a headlock during an AFL trip to Ireland and subsequently being sent home; urinating on a shop front in Prahran; parading with a giant sex toy in Federation Square; and finally his Brownlow disgrace that saw him traded to Brisbane.
In 2004 Laurence Angwin was dumped by the Blues after turning up to a recovery session drug-affected.
In 2001 Houlihan was spoken to by police after allegations he and Fevola tried to steal jackets from a North Melbourne dry cleaners after a big night out.

We are the Navy Blues
Brown paper bags, pressure points, and black and blue
We're the team that kicks teammates when they're down
We're the only team that keep getting banned from Crown
With all the alcoholics they they like to send us,
In a divvy van we'll end up.
And they will know that even without Fev
Our culture is still in the pooh

In a couple of years when we're moving up the ladder and the Blues are still infighting we'll be all very happy Tiger supporters.

CARLTON will consider whether to further penalise Ryan Houlihan and Andrew Walker for their part in an incident at Melbourne's Crown Casino in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The club confirmed on Tuesday that both players had been disciplined and fined the maximum penalty under the League and AFL Players' Association code of conduct, understood to be $5000.
The penalties may be increased in January when Houlihan and Walker's teammates and coaches return from their Christmas break.

More Blues Football players Eddie Betts and Mitch Robinson in strife after boozy boat cruise

THE Christmas shockers keep coming for Carlton with more players landing themselves in strife after a weekend boat cruise.
Police have confirmed Eddie Betts was arrested in the city early on Sunday morning for being drunk, while Mitch Robinson injured his shoulder and had a black eye after two fights.
The club have already slapped $5000 fines on players Ryan Houlihan and Andrew Walker after brawling with staff at Crown Casino early on Sunday morning.
It is understood Betts was locked up early Sunday morning for four hours and then slapped with a $234 fine.
“He'd had quite a few beverages,'' a football source confirmed.
Victoria police this morning said the 23-year-old year old Brunswick West man was arrested on Queens St just before 4am on Sunday.
“He was detained and later issued with a penalty notice of $234,'' police spokeswoman Marika Fengler said.
Meanwhile it is understood Robinson was involved in a scuffle the same night, injuring his shoulder. He flew to Tasmania on Sunday only to be involved in yet another incident where he was left with an “almighty shiner''.
Betts had been recently fined for turning up late to a recovery session after a big night out.
They join Carlton’s newest bad boys, Ryan Houlihan and Andrew Walker, who were fined $5000 after being kicked out of Crown Casino for brawling with staff.

Fev is an idiot and can't control himself when it comes to booze but it's looking more and more like the Blues have far deeper cultural and alcohol problems than just blaming Fev and shoving him out the door.

But wait there's more .....
Captive Carlton rookie and booze cruise shame
Peter Mickelburough
Herald Sun
December 24, 2009
A TEENAGE Carlton rookie was handcuffed or bound to another player and forced to down copious drinks in the Blues' booze-fuelled end-of-year celebrations.
Levi Casboult, 19, was barely conscious when his family came to his rescue.
The drinking game, in which Casboult was urged to go one-for-one with the older player, happened on a $100-a-head booze cruise that may have have cost the Blues a $1 million sponsorship deal.
Some players were so drunk they had to be helped from the boat by security guards after their Yarra River cruise was cut short due to their antics.
Casboult's dad, Leigh Casboult, told the Herald Sun his son drank far too much.
"Levi went on an end-of-year cruise with the other players and through the course of the afternoon he obviously consumed far more alcohol than what he's used to, and we went and picked him up," a disappointed Mr Casboult said.
The rookie was normally a very moderate drinker, the Herald Sun was told.
Hours after the players were kicked off the boat, Eddie Betts was arrested in the city for being drunk, while Mitch Robinson was believed to have hurt his shoulder in a scuffle.
The club yesterday fined Betts $5000.
Carlton has also slapped $5000 fines on Ryan Houlihan - who organised the boat trip - and Andrew Walker after they brawled with staff at Crown's Promenade Hotel on Sunday morning.
Carlton players also made a drunken nuisance of themselves at The Fitz Cafe in Brunswick St, owned by former Carlton player Mil Hanna, before heading to swank Southbank nightclub Eve.
The 50-strong group that boarded the Lady Lindeman on Saturday for lunch and a cruise along the Yarra was believed to have included captain Chris Judd and most of Carlton's senior players.
A spokesman for Rivers Restaurant Cruises & Boat Charters said some players appeared to have been already drunk when they arrived.
He said some players ignored warnings about their drinking and aggressive behaviour.
"They were drunk as skunks and there was nothing we could do to control the alcohol consumption," he said.
"It's actually quite embarrassing. They made absolute a---holes of themselves.
"We had to pull the pin on the cruise after several warnings ... because they were fighting among themselves.
"I got the phone call from our (boat) master and I told him: 'End of story.'
"I called the security in and they were all helped off they boat - they were assisted off the boat."
The 3 1/2-hour cruise ended an hour early when the players were unloaded at Docklands about 2.30pm. They were still hurling abusive language at each other as they left.
The charter boat spokesman said the company had a policy of not taking football clubs, but accepted the Carlton booking after assurances the players would behave.
"We were advised it was strictly a get-together, a luncheon, not a dinner and not a big booze-up - and it would all be under strict control."
By the time the group arrived at Hanna's cafe, the behaviour had deteriorated further. "It was pretty crazy. They were out of control and Mil was trying to get them to leave," a source said.
Betts was arrested in Queen St just before 4am on Sunday for being drunk, and was locked up and fined $234.
Carlton CEO Greg Swann confirmed a number of players drank to excess during the river cruise.
He said it was a disappointing end to the year as Carlton had joined a community initiative against binge drinking.

Could not have happened to a better club if that happens lol.
Surely the AFL has to investigate Carlton for continually bringing the game into disrepute with their moronic drunken antics. They can't blame Fev anymore. With all footy codes competing to get kids to play their game this is hardly an advertisement of the game towards parents that the AFL would want to see.

Reading between the lines it seems the game was some sort of initiation, or just a carlton twist on one of those team building excersises. A young bloke it attached to his more senior 'buddy' at the wrist and then has keep up with him in the drinking stakes. Male bonding at its best! If this is true it is indicative of a dark culture at Princess's Park.
It also has me questioning Judd's capability as a captain. I could never work out why Judd as captain of the club, never stopped fevola from embarrassing himself and the club brownlow night. I thought perhaps he just happy to give fev enough rope.
Now he has stood by while, reportedly, a young recruit to the club who doesn't drink a real lot, has ended up drunk after participating in some game that involves being tied to a senior player and drinking,.
If this is true perhaps there is either an ingrained drinking/boozy/yobbo culture at the club or judd as captain doesn't have the respect of the players to be capable of, or is afraid of loosing the respect of the players if he does, telling them enough is enough and they are overstepping the line?
He may be captain but i wonder if he really is a leader?

a good point. when it's all said and done, sticking your finger into the eye socket, or trying to find a temple pressure point, of someone who is lying on the ground, closest to the ball, is just a bit worse than making an alcohol fueled butthead of yourself.

Levi Casboult, the Blues rookie that was tied up on that boat cruise, has walked away from a two-car collision where the other driver was killed.
Casboult was driving in Dandenong when a Nissan sedan driven by Samir Azemi allegedly veered across the Princes Hwy, hurtling the median strip onto the wrong side of the road and ploughing into his Holden Astra.
The 19-year-old promising key position player was at the wheel of his car when the head-on collision occurred about 10pm last night.
He was driving to a friend's house and was the sole occupant of the car, luckily walking away from the crash after his airbag deployed on impact.
The driver of the other car, aged 21, could not be revived by ambulance crews and died at the scene.

Judd a captain in title only due to Cuz's life self-imploding. Cuz was still the spiritual leader of that Eagles' premiership team despite his drug addiction.

The gloss on Judd is well and truly off. Wasn't it claimed one of the reasons he left the Eagles was because of their dodgy off-field culture?
I think you make a really good point al to question whether Judd really has the respect of the Blues' playing group. It's all very well for Carlton to make such a big deal about younger players ordering salad because Judd did etc but the past year would say Judd was either content to join in the Blues' booze culture or he didn't have the ticker to stand up to it for fear of being outcasted. He did arrive at Carlton as their highest paid player by far and automatically given their captaincy. Was there any fear of stepping on people's toes as a newbie to the club? Has the initial gloss worn off in the eyes of his teammates where they saw Judd as a god when he arrived but may see him now as just one of the boys?
To be fair it doesn't help either when the Prez takes the players out for a drink at 3am on the Gold Coast. Nor did the Prez or CEO initially release publicly info about the incident involving Betts. Going by the Age they were hoping it would be swept under the carpet with the media's attention on Walker and Houlihan. Seems the booze culture runs from top to bottom at Carlton. This is the same Prez who said "we're Carlton, @#$% the rest". That 80s/90s arrogance is still alive and well at Princes Park but it's now 2010 and that arrogance has once again blown up in their faces. Times have changed but the Blues still haven't moved with them.
-
It is also the same prez that has a video of him drunk, sitting on chairs outside Princess Park playing up to the media and singing stand by your man, after winning the 87 grand final
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzA2nFklDo4
That video was a very long time ago, and things were different then, so it doesent mean that he still has the same mindset. What it does is gives an insight to the culture, and the arragance associated with that culture. What it does is makes it hard for him to be taken seriously if he tries to tell the players they have to pull their heads in. I wonder if he has talked to the players and explained the world has moved on, like it or lump it, things have changed and that this sort of behaviour would not be tolerated today?
I wonder if he even realises that this is even the case?
Can anything be read into Kernahans choice of song that day?
Wasn't it claimed one of the reasons he left the Eagles was because of their dodgy off-field culture?
That was the pretty much my impression, but i dont know if he ever said it publicly. He may not have known what was getting himself into at carlton.
Bit ironic that west coast seemed have made some change in that aspect. St Kilda had culture problems that prevented Mal Blight from staying on as coach, but seem to have made some change to that. The latest fisco for them can realy only be argued on the validy/stupidity of the trade decision.
If Carlton's cultural rot stems right from the top then they will find the next few years very difficult. Elliot is an arrogant pig who repeatedly displayed his view he didn't have to follow the rules that other did. The recently departed President seems to have had scant disregard for the rules as well.
we're Carlton, @#$% the rest
seems to be indicitive of this attatude.

LOL Jack.
Judd's squeaky-clean image has taken a battering since he joined Carlton. To leave one club because of their dodgy off-field culture to go to another willing to pay big $$$ with its own massive cultural problems makes him look like a mercenary. Especially as he made such a big deal about choosing Carlton and rejecting other clubs before he was traded ::).

Carlton's soup on the nose
Cameron Noakes

CARLTON released its 2010 marketing slogan with great fanfare the other week but, in light of the poor behaviour of a handful of the club's players in recent days, footy fans are now wondering if the stock bubbling in that hot pot is instead the old "lunatic soup".
Of course, "Can you smell what the Blues are cooking?" is arguably a notch up from last year's message ("They know we're coming"), but nonetheless it still has rival supporters' noses out of joint for three reasons:
1. Because it whiffs of Carlton arrogance.
2. Because people hate Carlton (and why would you not, considering it is a blue-blood club with a history of cheating).
3. Because it proudly displays three No. 1 draft picks secured by dubious game-day tactics, along with West Coast Eagle import Chris Judd, secured by a controversial financial arrangement with late president Richard Pratt's company, Visy.
It also clearly shows in the bubbling cauldron, the wings of an Essendon Bomber, prompting minor outrage and some amateurish (however, still applause-worthy) photoshop artwork from Dons bloggers on Bomberblitz.com (pictured above).
Let the photo-shopping and the sledging begin.

Carlton's thaw on John Elliott

CARLTON may be moving to welcome back disgraced former president John Elliott as the club reels from last week's drunken player rampage.
Blues president Stephen Kernahan lunched with Mr Elliott and club heavyweights at a city restaurant 10 days ago, just hours after the drunken night of shame that has so far netted four Carlton players.

Houlihan, Walker and Betts have been suspended by Carlton for a month and from the NAB Cup.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/88496/default.aspx
"They will be suspended from the club immediately for a period of one month, and during this time they will complete all training away from the rest of the player group, and with the Northern Bullants," Kernahan said of the three players.
"They will also be unavailable for selection for the NAB Cup, and we know this will impact on their preparation for the home and away season - clearly it was completely unacceptable."
-

Spot on. Compare this to Geelong (actually their leadership group) suspending Stevie Johnson for 6 H/A games in 2007.
In any case hopefully it stuffs up their round 1 preparations.
-
Kernahan reckons all three will be lucky to play in the first couple of rounds.
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/banned-trio-set-to-miss-blues-opening-games-20100104-lq38.html
Kernahan defended not extending the punishment to home-and-away matches, as Geelong did for Steve Johnson for the first five rounds of 2007, on the basis their lack of involvement with the team would effectively rule them out anyway.
''The way that [punishment] is set out they'd probably be very lucky to play in the first couple of rounds.''
-
Yeah, but it leaves the option open doesn't it? Good each way bet sticks!
-
Yeah, but it leaves the option open doesn't it? Good each way bet sticks!
Yep if the Blues definitely didn't want the three to play as punishment then the suspension would have included the first couple of rounds.
-
Weak as pee pouring out of a limp idiot.
Whatever hapenned to Mitch Robinson. Didn't he sport some shiners due to fights in Melbourne as Tassie on successive nights, or did his misdemeanour fly under the radar and was conveniently forgotten?
Why suspend them through NAB cup after all that hoopla. Did they get a flogging with wet newspaper also?
Juddy do you honestly think there is no drinking culture at Carlton? ::) :lol :rollin :lol :ROTFL

It came across originally as just a PR exercise to take pressure off the Blues rather than Carlton being serious about punishing them and changing their drunken culture. So no surprise the Blues have now gone soft on the three.
