It's too late to change now, says Sheedy
PATRICK BARTLEY, SYDNEY
April 4, 2010
GREATER Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy has urged the AFL not to tinker with the blueprint that gives his club and the new Gold Coast team priority draft picks. Sheedy was responding to a possible review of high draft picks for the two new licences that will come into the competition over the next three years.
''All of the AFL clubs, regardless of where they were on the ladder, were told a long time ago what was going to happen and it's now too late to turn back and make rules on the run,'' he said yesterday.
''I know there's lots of talk about Melbourne and Richmond being badly situated in the coming years, but they were given plenty of warning and had the opportunity to grasp the best choices they could.''
The former Essendon coach had little sympathy for Richmond, the team he played with 40 years ago.
''They chose what to invest in recruiting and the fact that other clubs recruited better shouldn't be the reason to change things now.
But Melbourne are probably different. They've got a lot of raw kids who will need three years or 40 games under their belt to realise their potential.''
Last week, the AFL hinted that it might revise the drafting conditions for Greater Western Sydney and the Gold Coast after criticism that an irretrievable gulf would develop between Richmond and Melbourne and the rest of the teams.
''Making rules on the run as far as football is concerned has always been a major no no,'' Sheedy said.

As an aside to what all existing AFL clubs are up against:
As it is, the Gold Coast's wage bill will be as much as 20 per cent higher than some existing clubs in its first year.
Not only is Karmichael Hunt's money exempt, but the club has an extra $1 million in its first year to recruit players under AFL rules.
The salary cap next year will be just over $8 million, but the Gold Coast will pay as much as $10 million when its extra allowance, and salary for Hunt, is factored in.
The AFL is believed to be funding some of Hunt's wage because of the promotional value of his recruitment.

sheedy never gave a stuff about richmond and its good to see him finally admit that now

basically
-
He was all for us while he was back at the club.
Now he is doing his best to stiff us.
He knows he has got a good deal with his new club, so he can say these things.
Lets see him crash and burn, and tell him the same when he is flat on his backside.
Screaming he needed more money to get better recuits. :wallywink :banghead

It's hardly a surprise because of this.
Nothing story IMO. Of course he's looking after WS18s best interests.
-
What of interest is this.
Watched the Gold Coast train in Jan .
They are all 6ft and over and built like tanks.
We seem to recruit lightweights ,why ???

Well duh. We also needed to strengthen the small forward area also so no issue with these selections latish selections.
Neglecting Martin, Griffiths, Astbury & Dea all who have strong bodies who were our first 4 picked.
-
Im hanging out to see what difference Griffiths and Astbury make to our structure.
Riewoldt Astbury Morton
Taylor Griffiths Nahas
We need to see this forward line before r22.
-
Rene would turn in her grave
Expected nothing less from Sheeds :sleep

Maybe he could have respected her more by not trashing her beloved Tiges!

Sheeds is about due for senility and failure. The way he has cynically treated us, all I can do is wish him a speedy embarrassment as coach of the Greater Western Sydney Bears with all three followers.

I cant wait to see this in action!!

farmer nason hicks webberley roberts contin kept gilligan promoted nahas last off season. throw in king foley edwards cousins tambling white all under 6ft. compared to wallace the little blokes have come into vogue.
if we had only gone farmer nason and say hicks and targeted bigger dodies with decent skills.
yep the land of the midget at richmond and we structure up that way game days.
-
i think contin will be a good player

Bang on - had 3 midgets out there this arvo in Edwards, King & Nahas that aren't in a top 8 clubs best 30. Could not structure a forward line with Nahas as a leading target!
Really need a young KP forward to emerge and allow Jack some relief from the monster KDB.
-
Need Griffiths in the side with day and need either Post or Vickery to come along in leaps and bounds.
-
morton astbury riewoldt
taylor griffiths roberts
with vickery going down there from time to time - i think its the makings of a good forward line
