It's too late to change now, says Sheedy PATRICK BARTLEY, SYDNEY
April 4, 2010 GREATER Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy has urged the AFL not to tinker with the blueprint that gives his club and the new Gold Coast team priority draft picks. Sheedy was responding to a possible review of high draft picks for the two new licences that will come into the competition over the next three years.
''All of the AFL clubs, regardless of where they were on the ladder, were told a long time ago what was going to happen and it's now too late to turn back and make rules on the run,'' he said yesterday.
''I know there's lots of talk about Melbourne and Richmond being badly situated in the coming years, but they were given plenty of warning and had the opportunity to grasp the best choices they could.''
The former Essendon coach had little sympathy for Richmond, the team he played with 40 years ago.
''They chose what to invest in recruiting and the fact that other clubs recruited better shouldn't be the reason to change things now.
But Melbourne are probably different. They've got a lot of raw kids who will need three years or 40 games under their belt to realise their potential.''
Last week, the AFL hinted that it might revise the drafting conditions for Greater Western Sydney and the Gold Coast after criticism that an irretrievable gulf would develop between Richmond and Melbourne and the rest of the teams.
''Making rules on the run as far as football is concerned has always been a major no no,'' Sheedy said.
