We're going to be asking this question after every game this year :yep so fire away.....
-
Martin by the length of the Flemington straight.
Tuck did ok, not going to be a long term solution but keep him in.
Conners was ok again, tried to have a go.
Polo did a fairly good job on Goodes.
Vickery ok at times.
Newman's best game so far, didnt have much to beat.
-
Martin.
And the biggest positive is that we should never see WHITE OR RANCE EVER AGAIN :thumbsup
-
DUSTIN MARTIN - The end
Man could you turn for this dude or what :rollin
-
Riewoldt - attitude is good!
Martin - Class, Match-Winner, better then Deledio, Tambling, Polo, White, Edwards, Tuck, Rance.
Nason - A Goer, A Keeper, better then White, Edwards, Hislop, Rance
Cotchin - Class!
At least Richmond haven't lost by over 100 points!
Competitive in the second half (when heat was off :banghead)
Martin long three behinds showed me, that when Griffiths is down there at Full Foward one-on-one, Richmond will be dangerous!
:)
-
Carltank lost - reality check time scumbags :cheers
-
For me I guess have been echoed by some of the previous posts.
Martin easily.
Polo I thought was good.
Nason I liked his attitude despite some blunders ditto for Riewoldt as well. Kicked 3 goals will learn and will get better.
Connors was good too.
At least we have a couple of spots filled in my opinion regards to delistings.
Matt White
Shane Edwards too many turnovers and fumbles.
-
Not in any particular order:
1. Was our best game for the season - we have improved in each game in the little things that will matter over time.
2. You can see them 'getting' and sticking to the gameplan more each week.
3. Martin - not a lot more to say at this point but if he doesn't get a Rising Star nomination this week then it will take a bloody good effort by someone else to get it.
4. Nason - has shown improvement each week and when he learns to 'kick' the ball and not stab at it he will be even better.
5. Rance - had a dip and showed a lot of improvement from his NAB Cup debacle.
6. Connors - improving as our best young half back stuff option, now light years ahead of Edwards.
7. Vickery - showed more improvement again.
8. Proved the worth of having another strong tall marking option in the forward line - be it Simmonds, Polak or whoever, we functioned much better when another big bloke was put down in the square.
Don't make the mistake of looking at the scoreboard - look at the things that Hardwick and the coaching team will have been working on. At half time we were 10 goals down but it didn't feel like it watching the game and turns out at that point we had more clearances, more inside 50's and laid more tackles. They're the stats that good sides win each week and I reckon Hardwick will be fairly pleased with a lot of the game tonight.
-
Martin, Nason, Vickery.
We won a quarter.
Rance took a mark. I was trying to remember before the game if i'd ever seen him mark before.
Connors good again. Good aggression and disposal better.

I have a question, point no 2.
What is the game plan ?
-
Went to the game tonight. I saw two major improvements. The first was our kickouts, which we approached more urgently. The kicker hurried into position and a few times we got the ball to half forward quite easily.
The second was our pressure on the Swannies in the second half, which caused a number of turnovers from team with much better hand and foot skills than us.
Oh, and a third thing, we didn't run out of legs in the final quarter.
-
Dustin Martin needs to be protected, Im estimating that within 2 weeks other clubs are going to be putting there best tagger on him and his development could be hampered. The club should aim to give him 11 games this season, picking the opponents, other teams that play open footy or are nearly as bad as us.Just my opinion thats all.
-
I have a question, point no 2.
What is the game plan ?
Keep the game as simple as you can, move forward rather than sideways as much as you can, don't corral - put forward/upward pressure on, get back to help out in defence as soon as we lose possession, some rudimentary zoning. You can see there is no complicated multitude of game plans in play yet and we won't see them at all this year but you can certainly see them working on a couple of different things each week.
What I see Hardwick and his team doing at present reminds me of how we train our new Army recruits at Kapooka - you spend the first few weeks breaking them down, removing all traces of 'civilian', then the next 8 or so weeks rebuilding them as soldiers capable of going out and doing what they are required to do as soldiers. Hardwick is calling it a "transformation" and I can relate totally to it (and see subtle positive changes already). Of course, if you need to have immediate gratification of your wants as a supporter then this method is probably going to strongly disappoint you but no-one was left under any illusions at the appointment of Hardwick that it would be any different to what it is. - just that some who said they understood and could cope, really couldn't when the reality and pressure of losing games while the "transformation" took place, kicks in.
Teaching and learning, teaching and learning.

I can tell you this.
I have been heavily involved in football and I dont see any game plan at all.
I see players being pushed behind the ball when under the pump to stop the ""bleeding ""
I see players confused whether to give a handball or a kick as first option.
I see opposition kick ins being allowed to rebound out of D50 without our players failing to get back to there alloted space in the zone.
And see players like White who refuses to chase.
I also see players who have had reportedly good pre seasons go backwards eg Post, Rance , White , Nahas.
And see players playing tonight like Tuck down back and Rance up forward which would have to be the most stupid decision for a long long time. As bad as playing Jake King up forward last week :banghead

Big deal ::)
Do you understand the game of football ????
I would love to know your views on our current game plan Infamy, you seem to have plenty to say.
Here is your big chance, go for it, I await your advice.
-
Biggest positive of the night ,
We were 52 points down at half time against a side that normally smashes us when they get on top, yet we lost by 53 points.
They kept trying to tackle, to harass and pressure. It wore the swans down, tired them out.
How long since we have seen a richmond team get that far behind and not throw the towel in??
Last year that would have been a 100 point, look for a high strong branch, belting.

We're getting smashed by bigger, well drilled and more experienced sides. They aren't going to just stand around as witches hats while our kids try out their new game plan on them so the structures are breaking down quickly resulting in players getting put behind the ball to stem the flow.
The work rate of some more senior players is very disappointing, but to be honest I'm not sure what you expect. I thought you said it was all Terry Wallace's fault.
This thread is about the positives, so I pointed out a few areas where we stood up ok. We had enough of the ball, we got it forward enough, but our forward line pressure was terrible and the entries into the forward 50 were useless half the time. This resulted in far too many easy rebound scoring opportunities by the Swans. Our wasting of scoring opportunities doesn't help either.
-
You still didnt answer my question, or probably you cant
-
Jack your a smart guy and entitled to have a crack but doing so make sure you're right.
You say big deal in winning the key indicators of tackling and inside 50s. Last week your biggest issue was our lack of completed tackles and small tackle count. This was addressed this week, big improvement.
2nd issue you had was the failure of getting the ball past the middle of the ground in the last quarter. We won inside 50s so issue addressed = big improvement.
As far as the game plan you believe absent. It's beyond humanly unreasonable to expect the side to click into a brand new game plan within the first 12 rounds let alone 3 and let alone a side that is unbelivanly raw and inexperienced. StKilda under Ross Lyins first year is an example and they had a vastly more experienced and quality listed players playing.
-
You still didnt answer my question, or probably you cant
Hang on a sec Jack I thought he did.
I thought he gave you a reason(s) as to why we struggle and where our positives lay.
We all know the negatives you keep reiterating but I would like to know other than Martin where you felt the positives lie.
I keep hearing about how awful we are and for the most part all tend to share the same sentiments, some more vocally than others and there are quite an extensive number of reasons why, most borne from a previous coaching tenure and definentely a few borne from a first year coaching who will be learning every day every game with the majority of players in the infancy of their career.
I would just like to know as to what positives you have. I can honestly say from my experience as a Richmond fan whom I have supported all my life and I'm well into my 30's now so I was too young to actually enjoy the revelry that came with our last flag, despite the fact that we are still such a long way off probably 4 years minimum we are definentely closer with his rebuild under Hardwick than we were at any other time in the last 10 years under Spud or Wallet and I actually recognise that the magnitude of the job.
If I have read many of your previous posts aside on many of our players who I agree with you are duds, Edwards White Mcmahon King just to name a few that are on our list albeit for another 19 matches there is an upside to the kids coming through despite the errors they make. I would rather see a kid make an error trying to make something positive than see a kid be conservative and make an error without getting out of their comfort zone just in case someone has a go at them and they expose themselves as failures.
Success isn't ready made it's acquired as a long drawn out process to think with Wallace gone the on field problems of our club are extinguished is ludicrous. Most on here recognise this especially with most kids on our list still not having completed basic training yet to put it in military terms but having said all this I would like to know other than Martin who was the bleedin obvious can you list me any other positives.
I appreciate who you know and your time in the sport as well as your contacts that does not concern me right now one iota I just want to know your positives other than Doc Martin tonight. I found a few as did many others surely we can't all be wrong. I found just as many negatives too as did many others. It's not about putting a positive spin its about being realistic. I honestly feel we are on the right track. Would you rather we were 2-1 as we were at the comparative stage under Wallace in 2005 and thinking we were on the right track when clearly our list was even more deficient than it is now.
I honestly feel we are on the right track and that the results will be the last thing that falls into place. That's my honest opinion. It's like learning mathematics you'll make basic mistakes sometimes and you'll get some harder problems correct at times but unless you learn to count properly you are not going succeed. This is to draw parralell lines with our game plan. Until we learn it we will make mistakes tragic ones at times more simple ones at others but when we learn it, it will look good. Kids don't apply for uni after completing grade Prep or Grade 1 or 2. That's where we are at, at the moment. Nowhere near graduation of any sort but the kids are enrolled and they're learning and that in itself is a start. They're not learning advanced algebra and quantum physics that will come with time.
I bleed for the club I upgraded my membership to a reserved seat and got a social club membership. I am not a martyr I am just a fan who loves his club and despite this I am as frustrated as any Richmond supporter. This admin and coaching tenure is make or break for the club. I actually feel they are doing a good job and the fruits of these labours will bear fruit when our team starts winning games eventually. Even if you don't agree with me think of this paradox to win you have to be prepared to lose. Right now what hapenned last year means nothing to me it's how we go about it this year that counts but if I may make a reference to last year if McMahon's goal gave us a win in which we lost in the long run than the defeats we suffer this year will be wins for the kids in terms of the structure development mental and physical attitudes of these new kids and "some" players on our list from the previous coaching tenure.
Now Jack please list me your positives other than Martin.
-
Here are my positives....
1.....best effort for the year
2....after half time it was 42 pts to 45 pts.
3....We missed so many easy shots we could of kicked 14.7 instead of 7.14.We desparately need more polish around goals.
4...Scoreline aside-I thought general play was pretty even.
5...Theres always next week.

Jak
"I have been heavily involved in football"
that's enough times mate.
Probably shouldn't keep telling everyone.

Wallace was heavily involved in football ;D

Sitting at the airport waiting for my flight....
The positives for mine
Martin = future gun, saw his Dad after the game, massive bloke understand where young Dusty gets his strength from :o
Tambling off the HBF actually works
Simmo resting at FF - a big target in the goal square is what we need - straightens us up
Dan Connors - probably his best game frot he RFC
Dean Polo - was very good on Goodes who's goals came in junk time
Nason - we may have found a late gem here - really like this kid
the 3rd qtr - there was a lot to like in the third. When the structures are right, the game plan works

Would agree

Last night could of ended up as a massacre of cricket score proportions.
Martin just gets better and better, fearless, and when he takes on opposition players, which he does with confidence, he wins, just throws them off with one hand lol. :thumbsup
Nason is improving every game as well, took a bit of a warm up last night with a shaky shot at goal but then started to shine, found players deep in the fifty with some very nice kicks and is always making a contest or finding the ball somehow, for a wee bloke he does real good, real late pick gem.
Vickery was much better in the ruck last night and backed up a around the ground a bit better, like him he has a bit of mongrel about him, doesn't mind a bit of rough housing. Simmo is fine rucking but he has lost the agility and movement across the ground to follow up so propping him down forward is ideal, he made an excellent target and helped the forwards a lot.
Loved Connors efforts including his mark of the year that I thought he held on to long enough cez le vie.
Jack was a mixed bag, missed some sodas kicked some we needed, MUST chase more and keep pressure on the ball in the forward line and not be lazy...cost us a goal once because he decided to jog after his defender when the ball went free.....and the turnover went straight up the other end mach schnell. He also takes good chest marks but needs to learn to take marks in front or overhead when defenders are trying to spoil. I don't think he is very strong in this department like ol Richo was. He is definately more plus than minus though.
there were other positives but too many only made cameos or left their runs too late to make a diff. Every week we only have a few cylinders fire in the engine, one day all will go and we will be roaring.

Would agree that indictors as we have discussed was an impovement last night, although kicking was a disgrace.
Game plan and the style that we are trying to achieve is extremely cloudy.
Will point this out.
Under Spud, his game plan was kept simple, and I will try and explain it simply.
When in possesion, we had 3-4 players that would be designinated targets( these players were K. Johnson, R.Hilton, G. Tivendale etc ).
These players would be required to be in the "'corridor "' at all times. All players were instructed to square up through the corridor. without being ripped into by posters on here, this was something that all players understood and tried to achieve, although in Spuds latter years, he didnt have a plan B or C and the opposition would sit on these "release players"' through the corridor. One of the many reasons we got some severe floggings in Spuds last year.
We all are aware of Wallaces game plan, but at least he had one.
His target of 16 goals a game, wanted 15 entries inside F 50 a quarter, all things being equal, he would at least have 7 shots at goal.( a quarter)
All of this was through a run and carry out of D50, with short kicks with as many players around the ball carrier as possisble.
He always referred to being like Geelong, but this was no where near the truth as Geelong DONT run and carry but rather spread and use quick transition.
Now with Hardwick, I havent any idea, but to say that the onballers have been given the option to either kick or handball from a stoppage, it cannot be both as they arent predictable to there team mates. Eg Martin tries to kick, Cousins tries to handball, although last night he seemed to kick as first option. ::)
You knew under Wallaces game plan that we were predictable as it was always a handball first option and then a short kick.
Its seems that only thing that is predictable at the present time is the long kick to the top of the square, as was the case last night when someone kicked it to a 3 on 1 inthe goal square , when Reidwoldt goaled
We need to see some direction.
The indicators were an improvement, I agree, although the style we are trying to achieve is a real worry

Certain to play next week, you must of watched the wrong game

Edwards, 5 inside 50,s , 9 contested possesions,
As for Kelvin Mooore, plays in D50, and has one contested possession, there lies a HUGE PROBLEM

Youre on fire today Jacko, Kelvin Moore is another one whose becoming an issue. I said this last week, weve seen whatever we were going to see from Kelvin, its time to trade him on at seasons end.

Edwards, 5 inside 50,s , 9 contested possesions,
Yes Jack, great stats and thats it, please watch the replay and see where those disposals went!!!

Said it in another thread but forgot to mention something on Tambling, got caught ball watching all night last night as a backman. At throw ins, gets sucked into the contest instead of stopping his man. May need to watch the replay WP and let me know what you think then.
-

And subtract the mistakes that directly cost us goals. The nett result is nowhere near as attractive.

u definately are a fool, edwards has earned his spot again and has been one of our best players this yr
u definately target players and cannot see any good in the ones u hate

I think you just dropped your syringe, you have just summed up how stupid you actually are in one sentence "edwards has earned his spot again and has been one of our best players this yr". Honestly I don't hate any of our players but if you think Edwards has been on of our best then surely you are on something... ;D

X your posting to a bloke who wants to compare Hardwicks efforts of 3 weeks with Wallaces over 5 years and wants to make a case that Wallace and Hardwick are accountable to the same levels for the skills of the players lol. Dont worry about it WA has probably been on the turps for afew anyway. ;D

Yes Ramps very good get the backup you need. I am not comparing Wallce to Hardwick I am comparing levels of skill that have not improved in some players and guess what it never will.
Move on.. :thumbsup

At least he gets the ball.
Also not his fault that the forwards continually lose there structure.
Thats why Simmo was put in the goal square for periods
A worry to see Morton chasing kicks and thus we lose structure

I think the biggest difference is that Under Spud we had the likes of Johnson, Tivendale, Knights, Campbell.
Under Wallace we had Richardson, Brown, Bowden, Coughlan, Tuck
Hardwick we have a bunch of boys learning the game. Cotchin can't be expected to beat a Brett Kirk tag. Only Gary Ablett does that. Our run from defense can't be expected to beat Sydney when our vastly experienced and higher quality sides have failed in the past.
Hardwick is trying to build a house with nothing but a hammer and nails. It's going to look like nothing is happening for a long time. At least he's been an apprentice under some successful mansions and knows how it happens. Wallace and Frawley tried to build houses with wood, nail guns and cement but failed as they've never done it before. This is why I'm confident that the job will get done or at least the best of any other regime before it for the last 30 years.
I refuse to believe that Hardwick, Lade, Leppeitch and Campbell simply have no game plan. At worst it's a game plan the players are struggling to adapt to as anything is when new. But I'll back these coaches 100% that they know its the right one for success. You can't argue against Hardwicks defense that his game styles worked at Essendon, Port and Hawthorn that won premierships. Wallace and Spuds gameplan took us nowhere.
Give it time.
-
I actually thought aside from a few poor disposals that Edwards was one of our best last night.
-
Cotchin wsa good when he got the ball. Nason tries hard. Martin will be a very good player. Really missed Will he is a top defender. Jack a class act but can't do it alone. Brett played okay.
-
Martin....Pure class and kicks like a champion on both sides of the body.
Nason...Had a few blunders early but didn't let that get him down and he kept on trucking.
Connors......This kid could be anything...he just needs some fine tuning but his work rate was much improved last night. He had a bit of fire in his eyes that I had never seen in him before. In other words I think his attitude is changing for the better and being a defender seems to really suit him at this stage of his development.
Vickery....Much improved effort in this game and showed good aggression against much bigger bodies.
Riewoldt...Needs to drastically improve his accuracy in front of goal but his work rate was excellent and moved up the ground on numerous occasions to provide a leading option.
-
Edwards is a DUD
end of story his a liability ;D

Small win a starting point
richmondfc.com.au
By Michael Rogers 1:49 PM Sun 11 April, 2010
WHEN your side has lost all 11 quarters of football it's contested in a season, any victory is worth acknowledging.
And so it was when Richmond finally broke its duck during the final term of its 55-point loss to the Sydney Swans on Friday, outscoring the home team by two points.
Ruckman Troy Simmonds said the break in play to allow a concussed Relton Roberts to be carried from the field in the last quarter gave the Tigers a chance to set themselves for one last effort.
"We really dug deep. I thought it was good character from the guys," he said.
"We were blown in the Carlton game and the Bulldogs game, so we really dug deep. When 'Relts' went down, we got together and said we weren't going to let the last quarter slip."
Simmonds acknowledged it was difficult to come to terms with the Tigers' poor start to the year but he said there was sufficient reward to make the effort worthwhile.
"It's tough losing but you can see the direction we're going," he said.
"We've trained all pre-season with Damien and the other coaches [who] have brought in a certain game plan ... and tonight I thought we took a step forward in that.
"There were some really good signs. Sydney only beat us by three points in the second half.
"The way we wanted to move the ball and some of our defensive acts really shone ... we just couldn't get on the scoreboard early."
Also encouraging was the fact that it was youngsters Dustin Martin, Ben Nason and Jack Riewoldt who were at the heart of Richmond's second-half rally.
Simmonds said the club would support the young players as they adapted to the demands of senior football.
"They're going to make mistakes; it's just inexperience but to have those guys, they just keep having a crack. They just get in there and have a good go at it," he said.
"You've got to keep encouraging them [to] take the game on and once they get games into them, they'll improve all year."

Said it in another thread but forgot to mention something on Tambling, got caught ball watching all night last night as a backman. At throw ins, gets sucked into the contest instead of stopping his man. May need to watch the replay WP and let me know what you think then.
and when you do WP, you'll notice that Big Tone has just copied the commentators sentiments. Tony Shaw and Jason Dunstall were 2 of the "experts".

I cant beleive that the majority of posters were calling for White and Rance to be returned.
Both were useless as t@s on a bull last night

Rance I thought was OK first game as a forward Jack.
Needs a decent chance.

Will be watching the replay big tone as I always do to compare what the TV missed & Limssed to what I saw at the game, especially the in close stuff.
However, I thought Tambling did a good job of running off the lines to try and create something of the HB line for the team. The fact that the likes of Tuck (in particular just chucking it on his boot) and Moore to name another one constantly ignored him and the options he presented surely isn't Tambling's fault.
Agree about the throw ins that at times yes he did make the mistake of going for the contest and not stopping his man, howver again I don't think he was alone there - it was Tuck's biggest weakness on the night IMHO as well.
Would be interested to know what people thought of Tambling's attack on the ball in the third just inside the centre square, where he managed to move it forward that resulted in a great goal for the Tiges - I thought that all involved in that were fantastic, it was agreat play

Tambling always starts seasons slowly. Which is not necessarily good but not necessarily bad either, it just seems to be a part of his nature. By the end of the season he seems to improve. If it was the entire team you'd say it was deliberate training methods ala Sydney, St Kilda or Adelaide under Blight, but it just seems to be him.

dont worry wp, even if blingers is bog and wins a game for us , they will keep on bagging him
idiots

I thought that Bling's attack on the ball was pretty good all night. Like most of our mids and backline, he got caught out badly in the first half when we were playing the zone. The Swan's accuracy by hand and foot cut our zone to ribbons and they had lots more players at the ball than we did. When we started playing one-on-one in the second half, Bling started winning the contests.

Sydney are a hard running side which pushes both sides of the centre
Our players are joggers & dont gut bust.
Seen many pull up when a better effort would have forced a spill
They are happy to give opposition room to move thinking simply by making the mark & standing thier they had done thier job
They are chicken poo & dont want to get hurt. Clubs know that so it makes them all the more brave to put that 1% effort in to win the hardball.
-
, Bling started winning the contests.
Can you guys please just stop this BS tambling lovefest. He was bloody dreadful on the weekend - 9 stats, 1 good contest which resulted in a goal, that's it, you would expect more from a 6th year player. FFS

Tambling was awesome the sooner he is captain the better :cheers

WHEN your side has lost all 11 quarters of football it's contested in a season, any victory is worth acknowledging.

The Herald-Sun this morning was mocking us over this ....
Tigers progress
Herald Sun, 14-04-2010, Pg: 78
IN A sign of how desperate things are Richmond, the club ran a story on its website on Monday celebrating the fact it had won its first quarter of the season in its loss to Sydney on Saturday night. The Tigers kicked 3.4 to the Swans' 3.2.
