Cousins lines up with Tigers for Frankston clash
Simon McEvoy
Leader
April 14, 2010 12:36PM

The AFL star will line up with the Coburg Tigers against the Frankston Dolphins at Frankston Park, along with fellow banished Richmond players Daniel Connors, Dean Polo and Luke McGuane.

The phones have been running hot at Frankston Football Club over the past few days as fans seek confirmation that Cousins will be in action.

Dolphins officials are bracing themselves for a bumper crowd and have ordered twice the usual amount of beer and food.

"We’ve ordered a heap more," Dolphins coach Simon Goosey said.

"I reckon we’ll get a few thousand (people) here. Heaps have rung up."

Goosey said it was likely a young Frankston player - either Mark Baguley, Mitch Bosward or Michael Hibberd - would tag Cousins.

"We’ll treat him like any other player, but we’ll me mindful of him," Goosey said.

"No doubt he’ll run through the lines pretty well. We’ll probably have someone minding him."

Coburg Tigers will bring their own security to try to keep the estimated 5000-strong crowd at bay.

Both sides are looking for their first win.

Goosey said Sunday’s big crowd would create a “finals-type atmosphere” and be a good learning experience for his young side.

"We’ve just got to focus on what we have to do on the footy field and not get too caught up in the media circus," he said.

Meanwhile, former Port Adelaide star Brendon Lade will make a comeback to football in Frankston on Saturday.

He will line up with his new side, Karingal, in the opening round of MPNFL Peninsula league at Ballam Park.

That's just a bad joke!  Cuz is off the grog and Connors is getting counselling.  Order less, not more!

Same day as Richmond - Stupid decision - How are coaches and us supporters to a lesser extent supposed to monitor how our players are going. Would have liked to see this one. Just another reason we should have our own side.

Anyway re:the security issue - Good decision - I do know a couple of the Frankston Hill boys and it is all a bit of fun but some of them are nuffers who take it a bit far also. Be a good idea to have a few extra coppers on hand, just in case.

Should pull him out of the side at the last minute just to annoy all those feral bogans , i doubt they would be happy at giving up a
day of foraging at the tip for nothing.

As Coburg are the AWAY team they have no say in the scheduling of the game. With the VFL the Home team requests the day to play on.

Even if we had our VFL team - we would still have no say as we would be the away team.

Agree Danog. It doesn't help his development playing 3rd grade footy when he at least should be playing in the VFL seniors.

The problem is as a rookie he misses out to senior listed RFC players even if they are duds with no future at Richmond beyond this year. I'd have Contin ahead of King and Thomson every day of the week.

18 RFC guys named in the squad. Take off 4 who'll end up on the Richmond bench plus McMahon and Roberts who are named in the ressies squad as well. That leaves the maximum of 12 FF mentioned.

Agree, from all reports Contin should be playing for Coburg and why is Griffiths playing for the ressies as well?? Is he that underdone??
Title: Re: Coburg vs Frankston, Sunday April 18
Post by: mightytiges on April 16, 2010, 12:49:16 AM
Griffiths is at least understandable in some ways as he missed a lot of footy last year in the TAC Cup due to his crook shoulder. So in his case it would be about getting runs into his legs and building up match fitness gradually. Contin on the other hand makes no sense to me. His body-type is fairly solid for his age so playing open-age footy shouldn't be an issue and 29 possies last week shows he is too good for VFL Ressies level. He needs to be test and develop at VFL senior level. He seems to be being punished because he is rookie-listed. Why couldn't one of the "naughty boys" pay for their misdemeanour in the Coburg ressies allowing Contin the needed gametime in the Coburg seniors. Roberts is another rookie who has gone straight from Richmond down to Coburg ressies.

Usually that means they'll play in the ressies and are only an emergency for the seniors.

Tiger back ... in VFL twos
By Michael Warner
Sat 17 April 2010, Page 40

OUT of favour Tiger Jordan McMahon has been named to play in the VFL reserves for Coburg.

Richmond football operations manager Ross Monaghan said McMahon was returning from injury and was unlikely to play in the Coburg seniors against Frankston tomorrow.

"Things haven't been completely finalised, but he's missed a little bit of footy and training and playing against Frankston we've got the 12-team rule. So we're restricted to 12 players -- and the 12 who play will have to be 100 per cent fit,'' Monaghan said.

"And at the moment we are in the fortunate position that we only have two injuries on our list -- Will Thursfield and Chris Newman.''

McMahon, 26, has been selected on the wing in the reserves team, but was named as one of several possible bench players on the senior list.

VFL rules allow for only 12 AFL-listed players to play against stand-alone teams.

A crowd of up to 5000 is expected at Frankston Oval tomorrow, with Ben Cousins to play only his second VFL game since joining the Tigers. Suspended Tigers Daniel Connors, Dean Polo and Luke McGuane also will play.

Richmond will blood first-gamers David Astbury, Matt Dea and Troy Taylor in tomorrow's clash with Melbourne at the MCG.

In my opinion-

Hardwick needs to ask Simmonds to retire this week and he needs to cut one or two of the list including McMahon. Theres no point keeping players if they are unable to make a contribution or the coach doesnt think they can. I can see another 10-12 blokes getting the arse in September.

With thanks to Fishfinger who watched both Coburg games.....

In the seniors were Polo, Nahas, Roberts, Polak, McGuane, Cousins, Foley, Graham, Gourdis, Browne, Webberley, King,

First quarter - Coburg spanked in general play

In Ressies - Hicks, Griffiths (#37), Westhoff, McMahon, Contin, O'Rielly

Griffiths took some strong grabs. Was out marked by Westhoff a few times.

Grimes took a sensational mark backing into the pack in the second quarter.

Wow, 7 goals in the last.
Against a 3 goal breeze which sprung up at 3/4 time.

Hit the front with about 2 minutes to go. Tried the possession game to wind down the clock. A howler of a turnover by a Richmond-listed player, who I've never seen it the backline before, as he ran across the goals and short passed straight to a Frankston player who slotted the winning goal (was a bloody good goal, just quietly).
Coburg didn't deserve to win but I would have enjoyed seeing the feral Frankston fans with the primary school sense of humour (a fair proportion of the crowd) laughing on the other side of their faces.
Did I mention feral?

Can't blame him for not winning. Just bad timing to stuff up.
The first half seemed to be going through the motions and expecting things to just happen. Once they got a wriggle on half way through the 3rd quarter when 7 goals down they'd given Frankston a mighty big head start and some confidence.

Dolphins just hold off Tigers
BRENT DIAMOND
April 19, 2010

FRANKSTON showed great resilience to win its first game of the season by four points in a finals-like atmosphere at Frankston Oval against the Coburg Tigers yesterday.

The Dolphins led by 25 points at the last change before a Tiger resurgence - stemmed in the midfield from Ben Cousins, Nathan Foley and a shift to the forward line from Jake King - cost them the lead twice before winning, 15.11 (101) to 15.7 (97).

Benny Lean, a 20-year-old from Frankston, scored the match-winner after King kicked three last-quarter goals and Relton Roberts threatened to steal the game with his blistering pace.

''He was down back and he actually cost us a couple of goals and I got into him a bit and it was good that he was able to come back and to come through the midfield and score that goal was magnificent,'' Dolphins coach Simon Goosey said.

At Frankston yesterday, Richmond's Ben Cousins, who was handed a one-week club ban and a spell at Coburg Tigers, racked up 28 disposals in front of almost 5000 fans.

Cousins was on song against Frankston as he helped turn on a second-half, midfield-driven revival at Coburg, along with Nathan Foley, who was playing his first VFL senior game after a reserves match last week.

Big crowd watches Ben Cousins
Sam Landsberger
Herald Sun
April 19, 2010

THREE of the disgraced Richmond quartet suspended for misconduct after the side's nine-goal loss to Sydney last week pulled on the boots for VFL affiliate Coburg yesterday, with mixed results.

Controversial midfielder Ben Cousins, Luke McGuane and Dean Polo, all dumped from the senior side for one week, headed to Frankston Park to tackle the Dolphins in front of a bumper VFL crowd.

The fourth suspended player, instigator Daniel Connors, has seven weeks left of his senior suspension to serve and it is unknown when he will again be allowed to play at any level.

About 7000 people flocked to see Cousins in action -- an enormous turnout given the plight of Frankston.

Cousins started on the wing and racked up 28 possessions in the Tigers four-point loss, but his impact on the game was limited.

The vocal crowd was unforgiving and came to life when the Brownlow medallist was pinged for holding the ball in the first term, resulting in the Dolphins' third goal.

Polo tried hard and will push for senior recall. McGuane was rarely sighted.

Coburg coach David Newett acknowledged the leadership of Cousins.

"(Cousins) was OK. He got a run under his belt, but I'm hoping he's like the rest of the boys and disappointed with the result," Newett said.

Coburg hired security for its rooms and secretly whisked Cousins away after the match before speaking to the media.

Round 2 Match Report
Coburg website

We started this game basically the same way we started our practice match against Frankston a few weeks ago.

Unfortunately the result was not the same.

Frankston had 3 goals on the board before we posted our first goal and  we trailed by 4-5 goals at every break going into the last quarter.

We started that last quarter with 3 quick goals and that got the boys fired up,but Frankston replied with a steadying goal.

Jake King and Relton Roberts were instrumental in getting us in front with about 5 minutes to go,but to Frankston’s credit, they never gave in and got back in front after a forced turnover with about 2 minutes to go and managed to hang on for the win.

While we outscored Frankston 12goals to 7 in the 2nd half, the damage was done early.

Major possession winners were: Sam Power  38, Justin Webberley 30, Ben Cousins 28, Robin Nahas 25, Justin Kahlefeldt 24.

Goal Kickers: King 5, Roberts 3, Nahas 2, Lawton 2, Polo , Webberley  ,Kahlefeldt 1

Best: King, Kahlefledt, Power, Rayson ,McGuane ,Foley

Coburg:              1.2          3.5          8.7           15.7.97

Frankston:          4.6          8.8          12.8        15.11.101

Reserves

Coburg:              6.3          13.8        21.10     27.14

Frankston:          0.1          1.1          4.7          6.10

The boys began the game superbly with 4 goals in the first 10 minutes and we went into the first break up by 38 points.

Another 7 goals were piled on in the 2nd quarter and 14goals in the 2nd half.

While we played against a weakened line up, we played and moved the ball quickly and consistently hit targets.

Major Possesion winners: Pope 40 , McMahon 29,  Cattapan 27, Contin 25, Houli 25

Best: Jordon, Pope, Cattapan, Hicks, O’Reilly

Fair enough CUB.  I've never seen him play, just following his fortunes as he's from up here and came on in a hurry in the last year or so.  What do you think are his deficiencies?

Crossed wires I think smokey, I was just reffering to my opinion of losing to Feralston  :thumbsup

Just shows how different eyes see diffeerent things.

In the Herald-Sun report they say McGuane was rarely sighted yet in the Coburg website report, presumablty from the coaches, he was named in the best players.

Anyone who saw this game have any comments on Kahlefeldt?  Seems to be playing ok and he tried out for a rookie spot this year.  Is he worth looking at again at the end of this season?
I tried to look out for him after your query another time.
I watched at ground level which I'm not used to. I like being up higher and watching players set up. From my vantage point he was serviceable, same as last week. Took a really nice contested mark in the 3rd quarter.
That's not much of a report but I don't think there was a lot to report. He was good in the practice match against Frankston a few weeks ago.

For '65, Rhett Jordon was awesome in the reserves. He was a good foil up forward for Griffiths and Westhoff. I doubt those 2 big forwards will be in the reserves much longer, if at all. Neither will Jordon if he plays like that consistently.

Both. He took a few strong marks and is fairly nippy for a solid bloke.

I think having Griffiths and Westhoff there helped him because the focus of the backmen was on them. I hope those 2 get to be as good as I think they're going to be. I have a feeling they'll both be in the Richmond side soon. Probably Griffiths first because he is more solid and a strong contested mark.

Not taking anything away from Jordon, he was very good. It will be interesting to see how he goes without 2 big dominant forwards there with him.

Cheers FF.  Sounds like he's not doing his chances any harm.  If he finishes the season the way he has started then you would think he is a chance for a rookie spot at least.
