From: AFL lukewarm on Ablett compo bid
CAROLINE WILSON AND JAKE NIALL
May 21, 2010
The AFL's executive is now examining two very different proposals - one involving an innovative trading system between higher and lower-placed teams - for compensating a team that loses a superstar such as Ablett. Wednesday's meeting discussed in detail a system which would allow a club in Geelong's position to trade with a lower-placed team to ensure that it received a better deal for losing a player like Ablett. The second proposal, also discussed at the meeting, is simple: that an independent panel determines what the superstar is worth in the draft.
Under the other proposal, which AFL officials will examine closely before the next meeting, a higher-placed team that lost a superstar would be free to trade for a lower draft pick from a team further down the ladder.
Under this proposed system, if Ablett went to the Gold Coast, Geelong would receive two first-round draft picks immediately after its normal first pick. If it finished first on the ladder (in an 18-team competition in 2012), the club would receive picks 19 and 20 in addition to its own first rounder, pick No. 18.
But to gain further compensation, the Cats would be able to strike a deal with a lower-placed side, and gain a higher draft choice.
For example, if the Cats were first on the ladder - and thus entitled to just picks 19 and 20 for Ablett - they could trade down by giving, say, an 18th-placed Richmond some players.
The Tigers, placed 18th, could give Geelong pick No. 2 in the draft - which would be the first pick after their own pick one. Under this system, like all models that have been proposed, the compensation pick does not ''belong'' to any club; it is from a central pool. In this case, it would be a pick that the Tigers would never get, unless they also lost a highly rated uncontracted player.
Thus, the lower club, like Richmond, would not be ''losing'' that pick to Geelong, but it would be enabling Geelong to get it.

That's just bizarre if I'm reading it right. So if Ablett nicks up north we could be allowed trade a pick we don't own for a Geelong player so they can get pick 2 ???. So effectively a freebie recycled player. Mind you what stops the Cats offering some fringe player nobody wants or a veteran that will be retired by the time we are any good.

So that would work like the other independent panel we currently have - the Match Review Panel? No thanks.
-
It means Geelong have to be reasonable to get pick two or we just let it slide into the void for nothing. Geelong are getting pumped basically. This is what we went through when them skunk bastards were targeting our players all them years ago...

But would richmond really do this ? take Ablett? who would we give up in his place we dont really have high name players do we? well non could be Ablett standards ?

It like wheel of fortune! :lol
Well Larry, I think I would like take the J.Selwood Please. ;D
MMMMMMM Nice choice......Deeksy over to you!!!

Imagine what Ablett would do to our forward line and mid field ... if we do pick him up i wouldn't complain

No what it means is, to upgrade their pick they have to do bidnis with us, that is give us a trade to enable a 'magic pick' that we won't actually ever get to use but can enable for them if they are nice to us. So they could give us a pick and a player or some picks or whatever I spose which means we get a bit of our denied compo that should of come our way and they get much better compo than the raw end of a pineapple up the back passage for Ablett.

If Ablett goes to GC17, just give them the first non-priority pick in the 2012 draft.
Fair compensation
-
if ablett was a rfc player what would the consensus be in regards his worth.
i have no doubt hes worth a top 3 pick a top 10 pick and perhaps an early second rounder. lets say picks 2 9 and 20.
a sort of precedent is judd. picks 3 and 20. also kennedy who was a pick 4.
it really is simple. clubs should be expected to pay what the market value is. that includes gc17 and gws. if they want ablett or judd pay the fair price. why we have to root around with all this rubbish is beyond me.
-
I still cant get over the fact that we could, would and should have the number 1 & 2 (or would it just be one) draft pick this year. Add that to Cotchin, Martin, Deledio etc.... and I just want to :'(
-
Under a normal draft we would end up with just pick 1 as we stupidly won more than 4 games last year. If we had won 4 or less games last year we could have had both picks 4 and 6 in this year's upcoming draft.

Yep a fair price for Ablett is at least what Carlton had to pay for Judd. Even at the time that was considered unders although with Josh Kennedy's current form it's become a fair trade.

Y mention this when it will probably Neva happen.. like honestly can u see Ablett going to richmond ??

The story doesn't say Ablett to Richmond ;). That will never happen. It's about Ablett heading north to the Gold Coast and Geelong being able to receive a top 2 pick as extra compo for losing Ablett by trading another Geelong player to us. So it's this other Geelong player that we could get for free (the pick 2 will come from some AFL pool of picks).

Not Mark Blake?

Yep pick 2 which would come from some AFL pick pool which we can dip into to do the trade. So we get to keep all our picks effectively meaning we would get a freebie Geelong player.
-
i know we're fully rebuilding but maybe a experienced senior player could help sometimes.
if it comes for free that is.
