AFL lukewarm on Ablett compo bid CAROLINE WILSON AND JAKE NIALL
May 21, 2010The AFL's executive is now examining two very different proposals - one involving an innovative trading system between higher and lower-placed teams - for compensating a team that loses a superstar such as Ablett. Wednesday's meeting discussed in detail a system which would allow a club in Geelong's position to trade with a lower-placed team to ensure that it received a better deal for losing a player like Ablett. The second proposal, also discussed at the meeting, is simple: that an independent panel determines what the superstar is worth in the draft.
Under the other proposal, which AFL officials will examine closely before the next meeting, a higher-placed team that lost a superstar would be free to trade for a lower draft pick from a team further down the ladder.
Under this proposed system, if Ablett went to the Gold Coast, Geelong would receive two first-round draft picks immediately after its normal first pick. If it finished first on the ladder (in an 18-team competition in 2012), the club would receive picks 19 and 20 in addition to its own first rounder, pick No. 18.
But to gain further compensation, the Cats would be able to strike a deal with a lower-placed side, and gain a higher draft choice.
For example, if the Cats were first on the ladder - and thus entitled to just picks 19 and 20 for Ablett - they could trade down by giving, say, an 18th-placed Richmond some players.
The Tigers, placed 18th, could give Geelong pick No. 2 in the draft - which would be the first pick after their own pick one. Under this system, like all models that have been proposed, the compensation pick does not ''belong'' to any club; it is from a central pool. In this case, it would be a pick that the Tigers would never get, unless they also lost a highly rated uncontracted player.
Thus, the lower club, like Richmond, would not be ''losing'' that pick to Geelong, but it would be enabling Geelong to get it.
