Hats off to Francis

While much has been made in the past of Richmond’s supposed shortcomings in the 2004 National Draft, the Tigers may just have hit the drafting jackpot a couple of years later.
The 2006 National Draft, which was Francis Jackson’s first as Richmond’s full-time Recruiting Manager, netted the Club Jack Riewoldt at pick 13 overall, Shane Edwards at pick 26, Daniel Connors at pick 58 and Andrew Collins at pick 73. In the 2006 Pre-season Draft, the Tigers selected Matthew White at pick five overall, while in that year’s Rookie Draft, they took Angus Graham with their first selection (pick five).
Those six players are all blossoming in 2010 under the first-year coaching guidance of Damien Hardwick . . .
Riewoldt leads the Coleman Medal race after 15 rounds of the home-and-season, with 58 goals - 43 of them having being scored in a scintillating burst during the past eight games. The 21-year-old spearhead, who has now played a total of 61 AFL games, booted a career-high 10 goals in Richmond’s Round 12 demolition of West Coast at the MCG. He is averaging six marks per game and has received a staggering seven nominations in the AFL’s official Mark of the Year competition. Even the most anti-Richmond person would have to acknowledge Riewoldt as the most improved player in the competition.
Edwards, 21, has played all 15 games this season, for a career tally of 62. He is averaging 17.6 disposals per game, racking up a career-high 25 possessions in the Tigers’ stirring victory over top-four team Fremantle at Etihad Stadium last Saturday night and also taking a career-high eight marks in that match. There’s no doubt that he is one of the most improved players at the Club this year.
Connors, 21, has bounced back strongly following his Club-imposed eight-match suspension early this season. He is averaging 23.6 disposals and 6.4 marks per game, in his seven senior appearances, gathering a career-high 35 touches against the Dockers last Saturday night. The week before, against the Sydney Swans, he hauled in a career-high 10 marks. He has now played a total of 17 league games, since debuting in 2007.
Collins, also 21, is averaging 16.5 disposals and just over one goal per game this season. He had a career-high 24 disposals in this year’s Round 5 clash with Fremantle at Subiaco. And, he was the inspiration behind Richmond’s come-from-behind victory over Sydney at the MCG in Round 14, with his last-quarter heroics. All-up, Collins has played 20 games since his AFL debut with the Tigers in 2009.
White, 23, is enjoying his best season of AFL football, averaging 12.6 disposals, 4.1 marks and 3.9 tackles per game. He has played a prominent role in Richmond’s resurgence over the past few weeks, with his ability to break the lines, and hardness at the contest. Last Saturday night’s game was the 65th of his league career.
Graham, 23, is also averaging 12.6 disposals, 4.2 marks, 4.1 tackles and 18 hit-outs per game. He has gone from strength to strength since assuming the Tigers’ No. 1 ruck mantle with the retirement of Troy Simmonds, providing the team with a strong presence at the centre bounces and around the ground. Graham has now played 26 games since his AFL debut in 2007.
Francis Jackson can be justifiably pleased, and proud, of how his 2006 draft selections are developing at Tigerland. Although it’s still fairly early days, they are all heading in the right direction and appear capable of being valuable members of the Richmond side for many seasons to come.

While technically correct that we got White & Graham in the 2006 Pre-season & Rookie drafts, these drafts were both held in December of 2005.
-
FJ's contribution has been enormous, boy he knows his stuff :gotigers
-
thank stuff finally :pray
significantly did everyone see the common denominator with each of those players? nearly all are getting a fair few games experience behind them now and are starting to feel as though they belong. Apart from the super elite draftees, most young players will tell you that the first 30-40 games are a blur as there is a lot of nerves not to eff up (pure adrenalin and not much thought process), its after that that most players settle down and relax to play their role
-
publicity machine working overdrive at Tigerland.
-
Tony G gives FJs wheels a fair lick in that one.
-
If I cast my mind back to that draft it only generated moderate excitement from us message board nuff-nuffs. At the time we seemed to like the Edwards and Connors picks but the general consensus was that Jack was picked a round too early.
Also, I remember looking at the Nason and Webberley highlight tapes the day after last year's draft and scratching my head. But they've turned out to be decent picks. Goes to show...
This year and next year will prove to be the ultimate test I reckon - but I think we've got the right bloke calling out the names.

Relton Roberts ::)
Matt Dea ::)

Dea was born in 1991 and u happy to write him off?

How dare pick #141 not turn out to be a superstar.
Give Dea time. Tippett was at his level when he debuted.

..... - but I think we've got the right bloke calling out the names.
Not according to some 'experts' on here who were screaming for his head earlier this season, blaming him for every bad recruiting decision since Lounder.

How is Troy Taylor going at Coburg ?
Does anyone think he will make it at AFL level?

Martin- speaks for its self
Nason-Great selection but wont be part of a premiership team
the other 2 are not even close to been seen as a win for our recruiting team yet.

and rightly so he deserved all the criticism he got and still does.
i would prefer a Pelchen who shows consistency each year in his recruits.
FJ has got a few right here or there but nothing special. The Cotchins and Martins were no brainers its your later picks that you get judged on and mistakes like Mclovin and Thomson can ruin your chances at success
-

Since 2004 Rioli is the only win he's had and they've had heaps of early picks.
#3 Ellis - dud - Missed Kennedy or Pendlebury
#6 Thorp - dud. delisted. - Missed Selwood or Riewoldt
#6 Dowler - dud - Missed Ryder, Clark or Higgins
#14 Birchall - meh
#22 Muston - dud

They had the biggest win of all. A FLAG
they won in part through the list management efforts of Pelchen or did you forget that.
Birchall???
Dew??? helped them win a flag
Roughead??
Buddy??
Ellis- dud well he is a premiership player and still a regular so not sure what you mean there
but above all else we look like idiots trading away for players like mclovin, thompson, hislop, Bowdens etc etc while the hawks well correct me if im wrong never traded away any of their picks in the last 5 years except for last. The picks they collected from Thomspon helped win them a flag.
thats part of ther reason they won a flag while we held onto duds for too long. see Petrified and many others.

And while we're at it, let's blame Jackson for WW's I and II, the Bubonic Plague, 9/11, famine in Africa and every other ill that has ever befallen the world. What's that you say? He wasn't around when that all happened? Doesn't appear to matter on here.

daniel, do you understand that Franics Jackson's job is recruiting
It is not trading away draft picks
To align Francis Jackson with the decisions to trade away picks for McMahon & Thomson is simply ridiculous.
Facts is he had absolutely nothing to do with those decisions. Those decisions were made by the coach & the head of the footy departmert not the bloody Recruting Manager. If Jackson had have had any say in keeping or trading the pick we gave away for Jordie you'd see Joel Selwood running around for Richmond now (FACT)
And just on your "nothing special" comment are you now saying you don't rate Connors or Collins and don't think they will develop into decent players for this club?
-
Actually, someone mentioned carl peterson as another astute pick. Sure, he didn't turn out here but you can't fault him for spotting the ability.

no way.
2007 draft at this stage looks to be pour bext draft in the last 10 years
Connors and Collins are going to be great players for our club.
also i dont believe Jackson had absolutely nothing to do with player selection such as those above. I dont buy it

Which ever one of the Selwoods was in the same draft as Rance is the one I mean :P

If that's the case then you really don't understand what Jackson's job entails or you clearly don't want too because it doesn't suit your argument.
Because I can tell you he has no input into who we trade for and what we trade away. He's input is in who we recruit based on the wish list otf player type the Footy Department wants

Sorry to let facts ruin your little rant, but Pelchen wasn't at Hawthorn when they picked up Roughead, Franklin & Lewis
He also was furious that Clarkson over ruled him and wanted Stuart Dew, he wanted nothing to do with that selection
So by your list, the only ones he can take credit for are Birchall & Ellis, not the best hit rate given the picks they've had

Dea was born in 1991 and u happy to write him off?
yes, played 6 games , has he kicked the ball in any of those games ? ::)

How is Troy Taylor going at Coburg ?

Taylor in the past week or so returning to playing after doing his medial ligament. He played in the VFL ressies last week. I think he kicked 2 goals. Another Daniel Connors in that it's above the shoulders that will decide whether he makes it at AFL level. He has heaps of natural footy ability but as we know he's got a court case hanging over his head.

You're right WP it was Scott Selwood. He's running around in a #10 guernsey for the Eagles. FJ loved him as a junior footballer but the powers that be at the time didn't believe Rance and Selwood would last picks 18 and 19 and so pick 19 was traded to the Dogs (literally and metaphorically) for Jordie :scream.
