Borrowing DCrane's question from the Tambling thread :) .....
Early days as we're only two days into trade week so nothing is yet all done and dusted but if we are left with the compensation pick we have obtained from Adelaide, do we ....
Use it now in this year's draft (most likely it will be pick 30) when we know for sure our list needs?
or
Wait until one of 2012, 13 or 14 and have a top 20 pick in a uncompromised draft up our sleeve?
-
Do you have to nominate if you are going to use the pick prior to the draft? If not then we only use it if there is a player still available that we really want. Otherwise, hold onto it for another year.
-
If we improve to the extent I hope :pray Would be handy to have something like this up our sleeve come 2012.
Depends on how Hardwick and co see our structural needs and what will be around this year.
Would say keep it in the kitty.

Pretty sure you have to nominate, that's why I chose to keep.
-
Very conflicted. Take the pick this year and have an extra 2 years of development, or take it in 2 years for an earlier pick while we're rising up the ladder. Keep in mind that Geelong almost definitely be using their Ablett picks in 2012. They'd be stupid not to.

Thanks CUB. If that's the case then I'd hang onto it

Honestly too hard to call
I'm happy to back the recruiters and their knowledge of the U16s
-
If the draft is deep this year use it. Why should a potential kid that could fit a need end up somewhere else.
Under 16's two years from now, although yep I'm agreeing with Infamy I would think that the recruiters will be doing their homework on these kids alot can happen between now and then.
I just am of the belief if season 2013 is going to be the one we break into the eight then a kid we use the compensation pick on in November will have played 30-40 games and will hopefully be ready to genuinely assist us in our quest to push into the higher end of the table.
IMHO lets use it while we have it this year. :thumbsup

For this years draft, you have to nominate you are using it by November 5.
In the following years you have to nominate before the first game of the season.

Ah ok so this thread answers my question from a previous thread. if we are going to get pick 15-20 in two years KEEP IT PLEASE...IMO of course.
-
I didn't vote because "trust the judgment of the club" wasn't an option. :)

Word is (at least on BF) is that we are going to hold onto the compensation pick and not use it in this draft. Even potentially use it as trade bait in the future.

I've heard this a few places too for what it's worth...

This could just be an interpretation of what Craig Cameron has said in the media regarding banking the pick
It could mean we don't plan to use it this year, it could also mean we didn't plan to trade it
-
Unless they have someone ear marked then I would tend to hold onto it.
Plus it will assist in the multiwave recruiting philosophy as espoused by Ramps
-
Hold on to it. Despite the fact this is suppossed to be a quality draft having a pick up our sleeve incase big name interstate players want to return home to vic over the next few years as we begin to rise up the ladder could be very handy. If we dont trade come 2012, 13 we have a top 20 pick. Success requires some patience Tiges.
-
Bank it. We should have tried to get 1 more and use them both in 2012.
-
Craig Cameron said last night we're banking the compo pick. Keep a top 20 pick up our sleeve for 2012 which should give up two top 20 picks no matter where we finish on the ladder that year. Free agency comes in in 2012 from memory as well so by the sound of it it seems we're targetting that year's draft and trade period to complete our list and fill in any needs.

Only Roos likely to use draft compensation pick
By Ben Broad
Thu 04 Nov, 2010
NORTH Melbourne looms as the only club likely to use an end-of-first round compensation pick in next month's NAB AFL Draft.
Gold Coast, Geelong, the Brisbane Lions and Richmond are other clubs who could potentially use an extra selection at the end of the first round.
Those clubs either received compensation picks as a result of losing an uncontracted player to the Suns, or gained that pick during trade week.
End-of-first round selections can be used after West Coast's priority pick 26.
The deadline for clubs wishing to use a compensation pick is Friday, by which time those clubs must notify the AFL of their intention to do so at next month's national draft.
And it looks increasingly likely that only the Kangaroos will use an end-of-first round pick - which will most likely become selection 27 - while others will 'bank' their picks for another year.
North gained that pick from Hawthorn, which originally received an end-of-first round pick as compensation for losing Campbell Brown to Gold Coast.
The Brisbane Lions greatly enhanced their draft position during the off-season and trade week, gaining two end-of-first round draft picks.
Michael Voss's side lost experienced pair Michael Rischitelli and Justin Sherman. While the Lions gained a compensation pick for their best and fairest winner, they also received one from the Western Bulldogs for trading Sherman to the Whitten Oval.
But Lions talent manager Rob Kerr said his club was unlikely to use either in 2010.
"It hasn't been that hard a call given that we've got three picks in that area," Kerr told afl.com.au.
"I'm assuming North Melbourne will probably use their compensation pick so that will probably mean we'll have [pick] 25, 28 and 32, so I think we've got enough picks in that area.
"Our next pick after that would be 65, if we wanted to use another pick after that. It's going to be either four or five picks for us."
The Lions, along with other clubs possessing a compensation pick, can activate those selections in any year between 2011 and 2014, but if they want to use that pick in any of those years they must tell the League prior to the start of that particular season starting.
Kerr said clubs in possession of a compensation pick had learned the value of them.
"They turned out to be reasonably valuable commodities during the trade period," he said.
"Especially with what they can deliver for you, [either] if you want to trade, or that added benefit of where it sits down the track."
Geelong, which received two first-round draft picks for losing Gary Ablett to the Suns, traded one of those back to Gold Coast for pick 15 in this year's draft.
However Gold Coast, which used the trade period to advantage to set itself up for future drafts, will bank the compensation picks clubs traded back to it, such as the one the Cats used to bump themselves higher into the first round in a fortnight.
Richmond, which received Adelaide's Nathan Bock compensation pick in exchange for trading Richard Tambling to the Crows, also appears set to keep that selection for another season.

To me its one of those things that you will never know if is going to be good move or not, guessing game really. Gives us some trading flexability I supose.

Tigers to bank compensation pick
richmondfc.com.au
Mon 08 Nov, 2010
Richmond has opted not to use its compensation pick obtained in the Richard Tambling trade in the 2010 exchange period, in the upcoming National Draft.
The Tigers received a late first round selection from the Adelaide Crows in exchange for Tambling, in last month’s trade week.
The Crows originally received the selection as compensation for Nathan Bock joining the Gold Coast Suns.
Clubs which had traded for a compensation selection in the recent AFL exchange period had until last Friday to decide whether to activate those selections for this year’s draft.
Richmond can use the compensation selection in any AFL Draft in the next four seasons, and has the option to on-trade it to another club.
The 2010 National Draft will take place on Thursday November 18 on the Gold Coast.
The best coverage of the Tigers’ draft selections will be at richmondfc.com.au, where fans will have access to exclusive video, player profiles and full analysis of each player from the Club’s recruiting staff.

No surprise but we are holding onto the compensatory end of round 1 draft pick for another year. Brisbane will be using theirs though in the 2011 draft.
