Compensation pick - use it this year or hold onto it for later?
« on: October 06, 2010, 10:33:26 PM »
Borrowing DCrane's question from the Tambling thread  :) .....

Early days as we're only two days into trade week so nothing is yet all done and dusted but if we are left with the compensation pick we have obtained from Adelaide, do we ....

Use it now in this year's draft (most likely it will be pick 30) when we know for sure our list needs?

or

Wait until one of 2012, 13 or 14 and have a top 20 pick in a uncompromised draft up our sleeve?

Do you have to nominate if you are going to use the pick prior to the draft? If not then we only use it if there is a player still available that we really want. Otherwise, hold onto it for another year.

If we improve to the extent I hope  :pray Would be handy to have something like this up our sleeve come 2012.
Depends on how Hardwick and co see our structural needs and what will be around this year.
Would say keep it in the kitty.

Pretty sure you have to nominate, that's why I chose to keep.

Very conflicted.  Take the pick this year and have an extra 2 years of development, or take it in 2 years for an earlier pick while we're rising up the ladder.  Keep in mind that Geelong almost definitely be using their Ablett picks in 2012.  They'd be stupid not to.

Thanks CUB. If that's the case then I'd hang onto it

Honestly too hard to call
I'm happy to back the recruiters and their knowledge of the U16s

If the draft is deep this year use it. Why should a potential kid that could fit a need end up somewhere else.
Under 16's two years from now, although yep I'm agreeing with Infamy I would think that the recruiters will be doing their homework on these kids alot can happen between now and then.

I just am of the belief if season 2013 is going to be the one we break into the eight then a kid we use the compensation pick on in November will have played 30-40 games and will hopefully be ready to genuinely assist us in our quest to push into the higher end of the table.

IMHO lets use it while we have it this year. :thumbsup

For this years draft, you have to nominate you are using it by November 5.
In the following years you have to nominate before the first game of the season.

DIMMA - You will be held ACCOUNTABLE...

I didn't vote because "trust the judgment of the club" wasn't an option.   :)

Word is (at least on BF) is that we are going to hold onto the compensation pick and not use it in this draft. Even potentially use it as trade bait in the future.

I've heard this a few places too for what it's worth...

This could just be an interpretation of what Craig Cameron has said in the media regarding banking the pick
It could mean we don't plan to use it this year, it could also mean we didn't plan to trade it

Unless they have someone ear marked then I would tend to hold onto it.

Plus it will assist in the multiwave recruiting philosophy as espoused by Ramps
