Anyone interested in a betting thread in 2005?
No need for you to put any money in.
Just highlight what people feel is a decent bet in 2005.
I will start with this
Post the PSD, these are the current odds for 2005 to win the Premiership, taken from www.betfair.com
Port - 4
St kilda - 5.3
Brisbane - 6.2
Geelong - 9.8
WCE - 12.5
Sydney - 18
Melbourne - 26
Collingwood - 26
Essendon - 30
Adelaide- 30
Fremantle - 48
Carlton - 80
Tigers - 85
Kangaroos - 90
Hawks- 100
WBulldogs- 130
And to make the eight
Port - 1.08
St kilda - 1.14
Brisbane - 1.16
Geelong - 1.28
WCE - 1.43
Sydney - 1.49
Melbourne - 1.64
Essendon - 1.74
Fremantle - 1.91
Collingwood - 1.93
Adelaide- 2.36
Kangaroos - 3.1
Tigers - 3.3
Carlton - 3.65
WBulldogs- 3.65
Hawks- 3.95
What do you think is good value?
(To explain this type of betting, Port to make the eight - Place a $1 bet and get back $1.08. 8% return - minus 5% of winnings commission - Overall return 7.4% - better than bank interest)
-
If the $1.43 WCE is still on offer to make the eight, please let me know :thumbsup
Not only will they make the eight but finish top four !
-
1.43 for the top 8 at the moment, and a massive 2.96 for the top 4.
-
I reckon Sydney isnt a bad bet at $18 for the flag.
They have been around the mark and may find enough to go close, especially if they get home finals.
Even the scum at 1.74 for the top 8 isnt too bad.
-
I'll have a $1,000 on the saints for the flag and another $1,000 on the Blues for the 8.
-
Pussies for the flag
Freo for the 8
London Tiger, question for ya. How does Betfair work please with regards to horseracing? Why is there a big stink at the moment about them coming into Australia which they're trying to do and from all accounts they'll be here soon. But there's been much opposition from racing officials here at the moment. Do they have bet types where you can bet on a horse to lose? Is the industry suss in the UK?
-
I'd reckon their top 5 (Port, Saints, Brissy, Cats and WCE) is pretty much on the money. IMO they'll all make the eight. I agree with LGO and would go with WCE to make the top 4 at $2.96. Won their last 8 of 9 matches in 2004 to come home like a train.
I'd have Freo as a outsider from last year moving into the eight. Their forward and back lines are still suss but with the additions of Carr and Schofield alongside Haselby, Pavlich, Bell and co their midfield is up with the best. $1.91 is good odds for them.
The Pies are so far overpriced it's halirious. Maggie fans throwing their money away :rollin
Bottom 4 (13th spot) for the Tiges is about right also.
Although I don't bet on the footy I would stick to betting the final 8 rather than the flag. The latter is too iffy looking from 9 months away.

Moi - Betfair you can lay bets (set the best odds) or you can make bets (by taking the odds that other punters set for you.
The gripe is two fold.
Firstly - The Oz racing commission wish to outlaw betting exchanges because it could allow race fixing (or any sport fixing for that matter, by a jockey or anyone getting offered money to ride poorly etc). This always has had a chance of happening, but where Betfair has helped out, is that they notify the racing board in the UK if there are any dramatic swings in the betting before the race has set off.
Incidently - Once the race is off, a new live market bets on the horses during the race. It is mad, and if you want to have a look, get on the site.
The second reason - and the biggest reason, is that the money that the Oz racing make out of TOTE betting is under threat, and until there is some sort of agreement to get an equivalent percentage of the Betfair pool (which is incidently about 3 times higher on formal Oz races than the Aussie tote....).
It all comes down to money.
Another question, do any of you have access to the brownlow or rising star markets?
I am not sure yet of my top 4.
Its a tough one. Port, Bris, St Kilda, Geelong, WCE all have good cases.
If Gardner is fit, then I agree with MT, WCE should make top 4.

If we somehow snagged a 11-11 season a fit Cogs or Richo could be a show for at least a place. Umpies seem to take notice of both of them. How is Rodan that high ???.
lol @ Tiger fans jumping on board Tambling :thumbsup. We should have a few good rising star chances this year - Deledio, Tambling, Raines.
I wonder if Ottens would be ahead of every other Tiger if he was still at Richmond ::). I'd say $250 has been chopped off simply because he's gone from a bottom to top 4 side.
-
Those brownlow odds look very interesting.
Gardiner $51 is worth it, Bartel at $41 is worth it.
Judd is way too short -
There are some great chances at odds over 100. Richo and Cogs will get a go
At the end of each week from now till the end of the season I am going to place $20 worth of bets (but its actually £), based on the general opinion of the board.
Likely bets week 1.
WCE - $10 for the top 4
And the banker - $10 on Brisbane to make the 8.
I do not have a market for the brownlow yet (usually I get it around the start of the wizard cup)
-
For those interested in a decent ladder predictor

Big tonk on Richo for the Bronlow this year - He has allways polled well in a (lets be honest) poo side. So if we improve a bit which I expect and Richo playing up the ground being more noticable to the White Red Yellow Maggots. Well ?
I will also have my usual bet for the 8 and the flag. Hey they owe me over the years so I will keep betting while the odds are big and if we get one out of the blue - Well I will have plenty of drinking money and after sooo long I think it may be a long party when it happens :help
-
Agree on Richo CUB. When he is on song he normally gets the 2 or 3 votes. Problem is the days of players from poorer sides winning a brownlow are virtually gone. Paul Kelly of the Swans was the last one and that was 10 years ago. Even someone like Skilton who won 3 of them would've probably missed out if he was playing now. You typically have to be a high possession midfielder from a top 8 side to have a chance :-\. Richo, Cogs or Browny would need us to win at least half our games this year.
Speaking of poor sides here are the odds for the 2005 wooden spoon.
WESTERN BULLDOGS 4.00
HAWTHORN 4.25
KANGAROOS 5.00
RICHMOND 5.00

Anyone got the Wizz Fizz odds please?

Anyone got the Wizz Fizz odds please?
Can't find any yet LT. Saints probably favourite at this stage.
If we are up and about early in our preparation compared to other sides then we could make a run. We would face IIRC a WA side in week 2 if we get past the Pies first up. With Wallace's more attacking game and the rule that the higher scoring team gets "home" ground advantage then it's not unreasonable to think we could be a chance to get through to a semi-final.
-
Week 2 bets. Not enough in the market for the Wizard Cup to back yet.
But deciding that the odds on Brisbane at the moment are too good to miss out on
Week two bets -

Week 3 bets. STILL Not enough in the market for the Wizard Cup to back yet.
Again, the odds on Brisbane at the moment are too good to miss out on.
You get around 5% interest in the bank across a year, how about 20% on Brisbane making the eight!
Week three bets -

Week two bets -

Still waiting for ... the Wizard Cup market.
Nothing to do with the Tiges but apparently LT the Power are going all out to win the Wiz Cup this year because they want the dough to pay off their last "entry into AFL" payment to the AFL early.
-
Week 4 bets. Took MTs suggestion for the Wizard Cup and took Port at 5.6.
Week four bets
Port to win Wizz - $8 at 5.6
WCE for the top 8 $12 at 1.35

Brownlow market just set in UK. Judd is at $9. Riew - at $13. Is this good?

Brownlow market just set in UK. Judd is at $9. Riew - at $13. Is this good?
The odds are against Riewoldt. When was the last time a CHF won the brownlow? Come to think of it has a CHF ever won one ???. Hart, Brereton and Carey would be arguably classed as the 3 best of all time but never won a brownlow. Plus Tredrea missed out last year.
Judd could do it again as you would expect the Eagles to finish around top 4. Depends on how much attention he now gets compared to Cousins who'd normally get the opposition tag. Gardiner returning might also take some votes away if his knee holds up.
Brownlow's a toughy at this time of year. Just need one injury or suspension over the next 8 months and your stuffed.

Looks like in a couple of years we will be generating revenue via betting on footy directly through the RFC site:
Teams eye betting sites
By Danny Buttler
March 09, 2005
AFL clubs are looking to generate millions of dollars by running their own sports betting sites.
As the AFL seeks an avenue into the $1.5 billion sports betting market, clubs are considering a punt on creating their own income from web-based betting agencies.
The idea is based on the lucrative English Premier League soccer system, which allows supporters to bet through club websites.
Clubs such as Arsenal use bookmakers, including Ladbrokes, to run their sports books, with an estimated 30 per cent of revenue going to the club.
At present, AFL clubs receive no direct revenue from football betting

Looks like in a couple of years we will be generating revenue via betting on footy directly through the RFC site:
Great, I can just send the cash directly to RFC!
Results Round 8 - Lost $18 (Week 8 bets and $8 port bet)
Round 9 bets - backed the blues in Wiz @ $10 at 1.54 - Won $5.40
backed the Saints for the 8 @ $10 at 1.11
Round 10 Bets - $20 on West Coast to win $20 @ 1.67 !!! Not bad odds
Cumulative Return - Minus $32.60 (so at the moment if you followed my investments - you would have lost 2/3rds of your money so far !!!)
Hint - (for next year) - stay away from the Wizard Cup.
-
And put next weeks bet on - Got Gehrig at $20 at 4/1
Wonder what he will drop to since Lloyd has busted his arm.
Gee , how poor will the Bombers be?
-
Bombers look stuffed now. I wonder if the media will jump down Lloyd's throat for being injury prone like they did when Richo broke his that time ::).
Your Eagles for top 4 bet looks pretty good LT.
-
Week before the start of the season
Ledger sits at minus 52.60
This is what this weeks odds are looking like -
2005-03-24
1.89 Brisbane v St Kilda 2.04
2005-03-26
2.12 Kangaroos v Carlton 1.72
1.6 Melbourne v Essendon 2.52
1.98 Fremantle v Port Adel 1.92
2005-03-27
1.16 Sydney v Hawthorn 4
3.1 Richmond v Geelong 1.36
2.06 Adelaide v West Coast 1.83
2005-03-28
1.75 Collingwd v Bulldogs 2.18
Hmmm, what to do....
-
Out of the underdogs the Dogs could be show as the pies will be without a known ruckman (Fraser and Richards injured) and Bucks is iffy. Might add the Dogs record against the Pies the last few years is woeful.
Bias showing but 3.10 for the Tiges to 1.36 for the Cats is a big gap given we're a unknown quantity. The early rounds and especially round 1 are hard to tip. Hey even we thumped the reigning R/U in round 1 last year in what was then a huge upset. All down hill from there for both us and the Pies.

I have taken $20 on Melbourne at 1.45. They have firmed in the market.
Would love to plant the Tigers, but plenty of time for that later

$9 win on Melbourne last week :thumbsup
Ledger sits at Minus 43.60
Time to get on the Tigers $20 at 1.7 (GREAT ODDS) against the Dawks

Surprised we are such clear favourites this week after the Cats game and having not won since May last year :(.

Log now sits at minus 29.60.
Tigers got through on 1.7 ....
This week, Port are 1.49 against Adelaide. I think its easily the best return this week. $20 for mine. :thumbsup

At the moment you'd have to say we have too many blokes taking votes off each other to be serious contenders for a brownlow winner. Although never say never... who knows what the phuq umpires are thinking.....
The other problem is that we could start losing games which would definitely write us off.
By my estimates at this stage:
Brown: 9-12 votes
Richo: 6-7
Coughlan: 5-6
Tuck: 3-4
Bowden: a couple
Maybe Gaspar, Newman, Kellaway or Hyde one or two
-
The other problem is that we could start losing games which would definitely write us off.
If we were to start losing, Cogs would have to be the exception there. In 2003, he showed that he can still get votes, regardless of whether the team wins or loses. IIRC, that year, he actually polled slightly more votes in games we lost than won. In a game we lost to the Bombers by 6+ goals, he received 3 votes and another 3 votes in a small loss to the Hawks. So I wouldn’t necessarily write us off completely.

Cogs 2003 Brownlow votes
R3 Freo - 3 W
R4 St K - 3 W
R7 Ess - 2 W
R14 Ade - 1 L
R15 Gee - 1 L
R20 Ess - 3 L
R22 Haw - 3 L
-----------
Total - 16

Thanks for that MT. Couldn't remember exactly how it went, but it was that he polled in more losing games, rather than received more votes in losing games, albeit one.

Good point.
Just on Cogs though, if he is to be a serious contender he better get a wriggle on. I'd say there would be only 2 or 3 games at most where he could have picked up votes in. Although we can never really tell, for mine he'd have about 5 or so votes by now. Maybe one or two more if we're lucky.
His last 2 weeks have been great and if he keeps that form throughout the year then he will definitely be up there.

Tiger spoon not for sale
By Len Johnson
The Age
May 24, 2005
The on-field signs of a Richmond revival - seven wins from nine games; defeating Brisbane at the Lions' once-impregnable Gabba fortress - are compelling, but there is an equally compelling off-field portent. If you want to back the Tigers for the wooden spoon, you can't.
Despite Richmond's impeccable credentials for the lowly kitchen implement traditionally associated with finishing bottom of the ladder - it has finished higher than ninth only once in the past nine seasons - seven wins from the first nine games of season 2005 have persuaded TAB Sportsbet that there are limits to the separation of finance from fools.
So no matter how convinced a punter may be that Richmond's run cannot last, TAB Sportsbet will not take his or her hard-earned.
"We've looked back over the past half-a-dozen years and more and five wins has been the most for any wooden-spoon winner," Sportsbet spokesman Gary Davies said yesterday.
That means no quote is being offered on Richmond, nor West Coast, nor Geelong. You can still get on Melbourne, which is the only team on six wins, but the Demons are paying $501 in the unlikely event that they do not win another game and finish bottom of the ladder.
The revision of the AFL's pecking order this year is reflected in the betting on the premiership and the wooden spoon.
Geelong came in to $3.75 favouritism for the flag yesterday afternoon after opening the day sharing top billing with West Coast at $4.
Despite its win over West Coast, Collingwood was clinging to spoon favouritism yesterday at $2.10, but Davies said he expected that Carlton, second-favourite at $2.40, would soon firm to outright favouritism.
Like the flag market, the wooden spoon can fluctuate wildly. Just a few weeks ago, Hawthorn was odds-on, but now you can get $6.50 about Alastair Clarkson and his team finishing 16th.
As for the Tigers, they are now $14 for the flag. They were $61 when markets opened and got out to $101 after being pumped by Geelong in the first round.

What a shame :rollin. How good is this year when you can hang it on every Pie, Blue and bombers mate and they have no comeback whatsoever :lol.
As for the Tigers, they are now $14 for the flag.
Not even thinking about it lol :-X
-
I just put some money on Nathan Brown for the Brownlow - he's fourth favourite at the moment where i bet at $13.00, with Cousins, Pavlich, Ricciuto ahead of him. Thought I'd better get on before it wasn't worth it any more.
Also, does anyone know where i can place a bet for first goal for tonight. Where i bet they don't have the first goal option, which is a bummer.
-
I reckon Sydney isnt a bad bet at $18 for the flag.
They have been around the mark and may find enough to go close, especially if they get home finals.
Bully the psychic guru ;).
