Betting thread 2005
« on: December 31, 2004, 12:46:48 AM »
Anyone interested in a betting thread in 2005?

No need for you to put any money in.

Just highlight what people feel is a decent bet in 2005.

I will start with this

Post the PSD, these are the current odds for 2005 to win the Premiership, taken from www.betfair.com

Port - 4
St kilda - 5.3
Brisbane - 6.2
Geelong - 9.8
WCE - 12.5
Sydney - 18
Melbourne - 26
Collingwood - 26
Essendon - 30
Adelaide- 30
Fremantle - 48
Carlton - 80
Tigers - 85
Kangaroos - 90
Hawks- 100
WBulldogs- 130

And to make the eight

Port - 1.08
St kilda - 1.14
Brisbane - 1.16
Geelong - 1.28
WCE - 1.43
Sydney - 1.49
Melbourne - 1.64
Essendon - 1.74
Fremantle - 1.91
Collingwood - 1.93
Adelaide- 2.36
Kangaroos - 3.1
Tigers - 3.3
Carlton - 3.65
WBulldogs- 3.65
Hawks- 3.95

What do you think is good value?

(To explain this type of betting, Port to make the eight - Place a $1 bet and get back $1.08.  8% return - minus 5% of winnings commission - Overall return 7.4% - better than bank interest)

1.43 for the top 8 at the moment, and a massive 2.96 for the top 4.

I reckon Sydney isnt a bad bet at $18 for the flag.

They have been around the mark and may find enough to go close, especially if they get home finals.

Even the scum at 1.74 for the top 8 isnt too bad.

I'll have a $1,000 on the saints for the flag and another $1,000 on the Blues for the 8.

Pussies for the flag
Freo for the 8

London Tiger, question for ya.  How does Betfair work please with regards to horseracing?  Why is there a big stink at the moment about them coming into Australia which they're trying to do and from all accounts they'll be here soon.  But there's been much opposition from racing officials here at the moment.  Do they have bet types where you can bet on a horse to lose?  Is the industry suss in the UK?

I'd reckon their top 5 (Port, Saints, Brissy, Cats and WCE) is pretty much on the money. IMO they'll all make the eight. I agree with LGO and would go with WCE to make the top 4 at $2.96. Won their last 8 of 9 matches in 2004 to come home like a train.

I'd have Freo as a outsider from last year moving into the eight. Their forward and back lines are still suss but with the additions of Carr and Schofield alongside Haselby, Pavlich, Bell and co their midfield is up with the best. $1.91 is good odds for them.

The Pies are so far overpriced it's halirious. Maggie fans throwing their money away  :rollin

Bottom 4 (13th spot) for the Tiges is about right also.

Although I don't bet on the footy I would stick to betting the final 8 rather than the flag. The latter is too iffy looking from 9 months away.

Moi - Betfair you can lay bets (set the best odds) or you can make bets (by taking the odds that other punters set for you.

The gripe is two fold.

Firstly - The Oz racing commission wish to outlaw betting exchanges because it could allow race fixing (or any sport fixing for that matter, by a jockey or anyone getting offered money to ride poorly etc).  This always has had a chance of happening, but where Betfair has helped out, is that they notify the racing board in the UK if there are any dramatic swings in the betting before the race has set off.

Incidently - Once the race is off, a new live market bets on the horses during the race.  It is mad, and if you want to have a look, get on the site.

The second reason - and the biggest reason, is that the money that the Oz racing make out of TOTE betting is under threat, and until there is some sort of agreement to get an equivalent percentage of the Betfair pool (which is incidently about 3 times higher on formal Oz races than the Aussie tote....).

It all comes down to money.

Another question, do any of you have access to the brownlow or rising star markets?

I am not sure yet of my top 4.

Its a tough one.  Port, Bris, St Kilda, Geelong, WCE all have good cases.

If Gardner is fit, then I agree with MT, WCE should make top 4.

Those odds were obviously done prior to the pre-season draft. That's why they have Zantuck and Knobel still listed with their old clubs.

Brad OTTENS (Geelong)      $67/$17.50

Nathan BROWN (Richmond)      $101/$26
Mark COUGHLAN (Richmond)      $126/$32.25
Matthew RICHARDSON (Richmond)      $126/$32.25
Joel BOWDEN (Richmond)      $151/$38.50
Kane JOHNSON (Richmond)      $151/$38.50
Wayne CAMPBELL (Richmond)      $331/$83.50
Andrew KRAKOUER (Richmond)      $331/$83.50
David RODAN (Richmond)      $331/$83.50
Troy SIMMONDS (Richmond)      $331/$83.50
Greg STAFFORD (Richmond)      $401/$101
Richard TAMBLING (Richmond)      $401/$101
Greg TIVENDALE (Richmond)      $401/$101
Mark CHAFFEY (Richmond)      $661/$166
Darren GASPAR (Richmond)      $661/$166
Ray HALL (Richmond)      $661/$166
Andrew KELLAWAY (Richmond)      $661/$166
Trent KNOBEL (Richmond)      $661/$166
Brent HARTIGAN (Richmond)      $1001/$251
Chris HYDE (Richmond)      $1001/$251
Chris NEWMAN (Richmond)      $1001/$251
Jay SCHULZ (Richmond)      $1001/$251

If we somehow snagged a 11-11 season a fit Cogs or Richo could be a show for at least a place. Umpies seem to take notice of both of them. How is Rodan that high  ???.

lol @ Tiger fans jumping on board Tambling  :thumbsup. We should have a few good rising star chances this year  - Deledio, Tambling, Raines.

I wonder if Ottens would be ahead of every other Tiger if he was still at Richmond  ::). I'd say $250 has been chopped off simply because he's gone from a bottom to top 4 side.

Those brownlow odds look very interesting.

Gardiner $51 is worth it, Bartel at $41 is worth it.

Judd is way too short -

There are some great chances at odds over 100.  Richo and Cogs will get a go

At the end of each week from now till the end of the season I am going to place $20 worth of bets (but its actually £), based on the general opinion of the board.

Likely bets week 1.

WCE - $10 for the top 4
And the banker - $10 on Brisbane to make the 8.

I do not have a market for the brownlow yet (usually I get it around the start of the wizard cup)

Big tonk on Richo for the Bronlow this year - He has allways polled well in a (lets be honest) poo side. So if we improve a bit which I expect and Richo playing up the ground being more noticable to the White Red Yellow Maggots. Well ?

I will also have my usual bet for the 8 and the flag. Hey they owe me over the years so I will keep betting while the odds are big and if we get one out of the blue - Well I will have plenty of drinking money and after sooo long I think it may be a long party when it happens  :help

Agree on Richo CUB. When he is on song he normally gets the 2 or 3 votes. Problem is the days of players from poorer sides winning a brownlow are virtually gone. Paul Kelly of the Swans was the last one and that was 10 years ago. Even someone like Skilton who won 3 of them would've probably missed out if he was playing now. You typically have to be a high possession midfielder from a top 8 side to have a chance  :-\. Richo, Cogs or Browny would need us to win at least half our games this year.

Speaking of poor sides here are the odds for the 2005 wooden spoon.

WESTERN BULLDOGS 4.00
HAWTHORN 4.25
KANGAROOS 5.00
RICHMOND 5.00
CARLTON 10.00
ADELAIDE 15.00
COLLINGWOOD 15.00
ESSENDON 26.00
MELBOURNE 34.00
FREMANTLE 41.00
SYDNEY 41.00
BRISBANE 67.00
GEELONG 67.00
WEST COAST 67.00
ST KILDA 201.00
PORT ADELAIDE 251.00
