Happy Thursfield's here to stay
By Luke Holmesby
Fri 21 Jan, 2011

RICHMOND defender Will Thursfield says he is keen to finish his career as a Tiger despite almost leaving at the end of last year.

Thursfield spoke to Richmond in September, telling them he wanted to find a new home during the approaching trade week.

The club told him it would accommodate his wishes if a suitable trade could be negotiated. It couldn't and Thursfield was left stranded.

Far from harboring any bitterness, the 24-year-old says he is eager to get back to business with the club he has called home for six years.

"I'm loving it. All that is behind me now," Thursfield told afl.com.au.

"It did feel a bit funny going back to training but … all the boys have been fantastic, as have the coaches."

The defender said the trade talk was not flippant and that he came very close to finding a new home. He also admits to initially coming back to the club with his tail between his legs.

"I was reasonably close (to leaving) without going into too many details. Then when I went back that first day after trade week, my key to enter the front door didn't work and I thought they might have locked me out," he laughed.

"But once you are there six days a week it all becomes pretty normal again."

Thursfield signed a one-year contract with Richmond in the wake of trade week, which he hopes to use as a platform for the rest of his career.

"I'd love to (be a one-club player). I'm loving it down there at the moment with all the young boys.

"We're having a good time socialising together; even when we're not at the club we're always off going fishing together and stuff like that," he said.

Coming to the end of his first injury-free pre-season, Thursfield has been building his aerobic base in the hope of becoming more of a rebounding defender than the old-fashioned negating full-back.

And he still has his eyes set on one milestone that has eluded him for his 67-game career.

"I haven't kicked a goal yet and I'd love to do that. I kicked four behinds last year and the boys have given me a lot of stick about that," he said.

"It's not a great record to have, 70 games and no goals."

Sadly for Thursty if his game doesn't change and he remains just a negating defender then this will be his final year. It's hard not seeing him spending most of the year at Coburg unless we cop injuries to our tall backs.

Its a shame that that part of his game never developed bc hes a good kick technically and uses it well when he does get it. Shoul hae put on more mass though he's naturally pretty quick anyway another 3-4 kilos would have put him into good solid 3rd tall territory.

Looks like Thursty has been unoficially voted in as the 2011 whipping boy.... :lol

Now I am actually willing to give him another go, a few years ago he had a great year, yes a year, I know. But hey, who knows, he had a few personal issues and this is really the first interview I have heard him make in a while, at all even, so maybe he is right now.

Lets just wait and see eh.... :thumbsup

Nah will have to be either Dan Connors (oops that's my choice  :rollin) but more likely Shaun Grigg especially if Andy Collins kicks 4 or 5 against us in Round 1  ;D

Must admit Dan connors is the one i'll be picking on too...Has a wealth of ability ,just sprays the ball to such an extent that it really costs the team. His decision making also needs to be refined, maybe making things simple for him out on the field will help.

Captain cry baby called him 'and I quote' "Cop that you soft punt" when he cleaned him up last year, so I gather the opposition see him as weak, so will need to harden the f up a bit, mentally and physically and maybe he will be of service.

I personaly think your alittle hard in Dan WP. I agree though, Grigg better be worth it. I liked that Collins boy. I will be watching Grigg very closely indeed.

Why on earth should Grigg be judged against Collins. If somebody has to be judged it should be the people who traded Collins for Grigg NOT Grigg.

I read with interest how Ross Lyon believes that other clubs should show some compassion or as he said in today's Hun

"Just because you are on the football field, you don't leave behind the community standard.
If people are consistently crossing those (standards) it becomes an issue, and that's something the AFL consistently deals with, which is any form of vilification on the agenda."

I presume he is referring to opposition players sledging the Saints on the circus that his players created and the administration perpetuated post the photo scandal by going for this girl and underestimating her wherewithal in causing disruption at the club.

Maybe he should have a chat with his captain about community standards given what he said to Andrew Lovett in 2009 when he was playing for the Bombers. :wallywink

Ross Lyon give it up will you?

Every club in the competition should take note of these comments because if they can't take a few snide comments from opposition players - as their captain has already shown when getting Fish'n'Chips - then god help them when they cop some real pressure this year.

No no no. Unfortunately Grigg must be judged, scrutinized and lambasted if he's a dud. The reason for this is because he is from the scum, cheating Carlton. Yes it's not his fault but it is fact. It would be absolutely diabolical if Collins becomes a star and Grigg is another Fiora type.
I hate Carlton with a passion. We must beat them nab cup. We must beat them round 1 and Grigg has to dominate so as to rub it into their arrogant faces.

You wear that Richmond jumper and you are going to be scrutinized.
No Tambling this year and we saw improvement from some of our better known whipping boys last season.
Tuck and Edwards proved alot of us wrong.
I'll just let the season unfold and determine who the number one passenger is.
